And yet it marks consistent growth every year. Is there any other MMO on the market right now that can boast with that? Most theme parks start with 500k-1mil pre-orders and then tumble down to 100k or freemium in a year. Hell, even WoW is past its 12mil heyday.
If accessibility and player safety is all it's about, why doesn't any theme park grow like EVE? |

I guess there's only this many "Did you expect DayZ to be as big as it is?" questions a man can answer before he goes overboard.
Anyway, looking forward to the standalone. |

Darkfall would've died in under a year if it was released in the state it was in 2009, as a PvE title. The FFA PvP is the only thing that's kept it alive for 3,5 years. |

The amazing graphics of Warhammer online
General Discussion « WAR (Warhammer Online) 5/07/10 6:45:47 AM
The graphics look quite good if you tweak them in your video card control panel. The main problem is the lack of some cruical options in the settings pane - namely antialiasing and anisotropic filtering. And i'd avoid the "Ooh shiny" option (HDR/Bloom, yuck). World of Warcraft: "Celestial Steed" Brings in $2 Million in Four Hours
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 4/20/10 10:07:01 AM
The only efficient way to counter this would be to turn WoW-life a living hell for everyone who owns one, ignoring them, refusing to trade with them, to group with them until they're too ashamed to ever use it again and hesitant to buy anything else from the Blizzard shop. |

The Old Republic is do or die for Bioware, a 150 mil game
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 4/06/10 12:11:12 PM
Well there's no other big MMORPG with real RPG elements, it's competitive grinding with pop-culture referencing quest dispensers. And since this looks like a full fledged Bioware RPG and we all know how well those sell... I think they have a pretty good shot. |

I hadn't checked up on SW:TOR since last year and what i see now is... simply great. A massively multiplayer Bioware RPG. A real story, you can feel good for playing through and not scammed out of your money, real goddamn character development story and gameplay wise. Fanboy mode is on. I really hope this brings a surge to the MMO genre and stops great fantasy universes from being turned into competitive grinders. Note to self: Need new pants. EDIT: http://www.informationweek.com/news/internet/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=199902853 OOH, THE GREAT DOOR! I HEAR YOU ARE CALLING ME! YES, MY MISTRESS! I HEAR YOU! NOW I AM HAPPY! YOUR SONGS ARE MAGNIFICENT! SING MORE! SING ONLY FOR ME! Note to self: Pants, again. |

Why is combat in MMOs always a chore ?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 4/04/10 11:31:17 AM
The combat system of MMOs is in no way lesser to that of other genres. It's the meaningless act of fetching quest, killing things, returning quest without actual storyline or character development that makes it boring. |
|
|
Because it has scared above 90% of the people putting money into this genre into creating anything remotely different as gameplay mechanics. Which is what every Blizzard game does actually. |

I'd play a game with MMO combat and a vast open world in single player. It is a viable, enjoyable RPG system. I'd happily play a single player vanilla WoW for instance, due to the relevance most quests had to the Warcraft universe and your character, if only to see how the areas from the trilogy are recreated. I'd stay away from the expansions however, because they are the culmination of those stupid, irrelevant, grindy, pop-culture referencing MMO quests, slapped on as an excuse to give XP and items to the player. There is a lack of linearity and consequence that is only there because of an irrational fear of doing something different in the genre. AoC's Tortage was greatly accepted because you really felt some progression of your character. He/she went from an amnesiac slave, through a revolutionary in tirant-occupied Tortage, to a free man/woman. And after that he/she becomes the marathon running monster slayer robot we play in every MMO and that is when i canceled my subscription. I think a viable MMO formula would be to have each server go through a set timeline, a campaign of sorts, and then restarting the story. Like what Brink is doing, a large scale campaign you go through with all the other people and their unique avatars. The formula of Realm of the Mad God is also a very interesting one. There's a limited number of minions, you gather up with the other people in your server, slay, slay, slay increasingly difficult minions, get increasingly better gear, maybe die (permeadeath) 'till the god appears, the bunch who've made it to him at the risk of losing high level chars and gear maybe kill him and get the best loot in the game. After that, the same thing all over again. Just anything but that same old homogenic crap we've been fed the last 10 years. |
