Im shocked that you did not include Ultima Online and its endless expansions (or sequels by definition), for anyone who started out on UO i have found that most are still looking for a game that includes so many facets as this pioneer of the mmo era. But still a very good article. |

Originally posted by CrueKnight Sure, I know that the developers has wow in mind, but almost same HUD just looks silly. :p But as long as it's free, Im not mad at anything. Im just saying, admit it's wowish.... more WoWish than just about any other game. Not bad, but stop decieving yourselves.
your making a fool of yourself, you should read before posting. he just said they said from the beginning its based on WoW, the main premise behind using the WoW look is the lack of high end hardware it requires to run. the WoW engine can run on just about any machine with just about any hardware in it, that is part of WoW's success. |

Originally posted by CrueKnight Well, I have wow as well as well as a friend of mine. He watched me play RoM and we both agree it's pretty WoW clonish. You have a bit of the graphics, the way you accept quests, the layout of message boxes, the layout of the HUD, the skills system, the spells system.... the thing is, it may not be a absolute WoW clone, as in WoW copy/paste, obviously because it's a different game, but there are so many obvious similarities the games are definatly related to each other. That said, I DO LOVE RoM as a free MMO. Since I dont play wow anymore, Im looking into the F2P world and besides GW, the best Ive tried so far are "Perfect World" International, and Rubies of Eventide. But this game beats them. SO even though it's very WoWish, I still like it. I wish the creators would have a mind of their own though when they make any more changes instead of making more wow features.
all this carrying on about WoW is pathetic, WoW is not really the standard for these type of games, it just happened to have a very large following and a very simple dummy tutorial so literally anyone could pick it up and play it. as far as similarities, the graphics, which include the UI, are about the only thing similar to WoW. Everything else is pretty much the same old basic stuff from your average MMO which is used in all sorts of MMOs all the way back to UO. But none the less this is not the point here, this game has taken elements from diff games whether intentional or not and combined them to make one really interesting game. They even said themselves that they want to appeal to everyone, which is what MMO is all about, not just having a genre of MMO, which i think is absurd, but having something for everyone. The real challenge will be staying up with updates and expansions, which is alot harder when your a f2p game. But if RoM can maintain even close to what the people ask for in ADDITIONS not in stuff to be taken out, then they will succeed. That is why this thread is about this game being possibly the best MMO. |

This game is what i have been waiting for, for a very long time. Since i left UO renaisance i have missed so many aspects of that game and cant help but compare just about every game i play to it. The comradary, the housing, the skills set, the freedom. These have all made up what ive always considered the best MMO ever, but only one thing was lacking that was graphics. They did try and bring the UO graphics up a bit but they still fell short, then with graphics there is that problem with not enough users haveing the rig to run the game.
WoW was lucky in the fact that nobody minded the cartoony graphics everyone was used to from the RTS titles, so when people started playing it they fell right in love with it. Plus no one had any problems running the game so they didnt need to spend any money and getting there friends online playing wasnt hard cause none of them had to upgrade anything to play it.
Now Runes of Magic has come into the picture, the only downfall i forsee for this game is the lack of following, it doesnt have any past games im aware of to pull a fan base from, which was the key behind WoW's success. But it has everything any good MMO has ever had, it has simple but attractive graphics, it has skills which the player gets to customize, it has multi classing, it has housing right from the start. Most importantly about the housing is the ability to customize them, make them your own display and show off your spoils, trophies and valuables from your adventures. This is partly what brought on the multiplayer aspect of UO, was the conversation pieces that players would display. They cause envy, they cause drive, they create goals for lower level characters. The value of having a customizable house is almost infinite, plus its a refuge for people to go to when they want to get away from the constant grinding.
Just imagine, you been grinding levels, quest, and your crafting for about 2 hours and you really need a change of pace something to change it up a bit before you go back to "work" so to speak. Now you go to your house and begin rearranging your special items in ways that will bring "oooohh's from peoples mouths as they enter your humble abode. The sudden sense of accomplishment you gain from this is enough to let you go back to the grinding work of leveling, crafting, and questing if nothing else to look forward to the next trophy you get to mount on your wall.
I personally feel this game will be underrated and overlooked, like so many games out there have been. People dont realize what this game really brings to the table, they look at some pictures and make assumptions about it without actually reading anythign about the game on the website. I just hope that people can realize that not just the names we know can be good games, but anyone at anytime could come out with the next big game that sets the new standard for games of all genres.
Thank you for your time. |

Runes of Magic: Runes of Magic Dev Chat
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/15/08 4:57:34 PM
so im sitting in the dev chat for this game and its not a "chat" at all its just a Q&A. this is rather dissapointing, i understand that there needs to be some sort of control over the chat that is posted up but you shouldnt call it a chat if its not a chat. sitting here waiting for slow responses is irritating and reflects badly on MMORPG.com, get it together guys |

Runes of Magic: Runes of Magic Dev Chat
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/15/08 11:36:27 AM
the above post was the opening to a thread i posted in gen discussion forum, there have been a couple replies to this thread and i really think the devs need to see these replies to get some idea what the people are looking at for this game to come through with.
On another note i would love to be involved in the dev chat but there is nothing that i can see that tells me where to go for the chat itself, i assume the chat link at the top which uses and IRC interface in which unfortunately i know very little about. So if someone could post a link directly to the RoM dev chat that would be immensely helpful and convenient to probably more people than you think. thank you |

Runes of magic brings the best together with the best

ultimately its not all about the player housing, that is just a feature they offer that many games dont, my point was that they are offering so many valued features in this one game that they should really get a little more recognition. Im just wanting more people to actually realize what all they offer, go to there website and look at thee features link and look into there concepts on char development. RoM has the potential to go far, really far but they need to make sure they hold true to what they are offering, and dont do what AoC did and offer lots of things and then not deliver when they said they would. Yes that is part of developing and marketing but there is also a relationship you must hold with your market and lieing or letting them down is not going to keep that relationship strong. |

Runes of magic brings the best together with the best

i completely understand what you are saying, and although i didnt play very much of EQ2 i did try it out and was quickly bored with it and there joke of a trial. But moving past that my comparison to the housing was primarily from UO Renaisance, im sure there are not just a whole lot of people who have played that game. But as far as in game impact, the houses had a majority of impact, usefulness, and provided lots of bragging rights. Much like in SWG the housing was for the players to place and space was limited as to where you could actually place a house. This alone created a very valuable commodity, just giving out an instance place to dump stuff is not what i could consider housing. Now as to whether or not RoM is going to just give out an instance area to play mini game in im not real sure, hopefully they are more intelligent than that. As far as the ingame impact, the player housing in UO provided, a spot to set up a vendor/shop that would sell your items while u were offline. It also provided convenient storage area for your items, such as potions spell reagents, diff armor or weapons for diff purposes. This was available because of the freedom to drop a house anywhere in the world that there was a large enough flat ground space. Houses also provided a safe haven from PKs which made the game immensely exciting. Knowing you could find safety in your own home, you could lock the door and give permission to enter to a specific list of people. Now on to the decorating part of my post, I understand this is not for everyone, and the bottom line is if a game comes down to people only looking for ingame impact then the game has already failed. If the players of a game cant......for lack of better words have pride in there characters in game then the players are not very interested in sticking around. Instead they are basically looking for a reason to leave the game, unfortunately this MMO war that is going on has become for the most part just that. What i would be betting on and advixing RoM devs to bet on is the aspects of the game that appeal to loyal gamers. Gamers who know what they want and enjoy the small things in life, even in a fantasy game life. UO still has a huge following of players that have remained and still pay for there accounts, WoW obviously has its huge following as well. The fans of these other games stay with the games for many reasons, the people that make up there guilds are all on for diff reasons. Granted there are a few people who play simply for the Warcraft Lore, or because UO is all they ever learned and dont wanna start over. But for the millions that are looking for a game that can improve on what they already like in other games; now there is the market that any new MMO dev should be aiming for. This game has the ability to present that, whether they like decorating, dressing up, role playing, leveling, questing, pvping, or even a combination of any of these as long as gamers can find what they want in a game they will stick to it. Honestly i think people are getting tired of trying out game after game always looking for that next great game that they will know from day one that "this is the game i'll play for a very long time". Sorry im long winded call it passion if you want too, or obsession either way bottom line is, this game can provide what people want. Its just a matter of whether or not they pay attention and are willing to provide what people expect. |

i would love to be on the project but you dont seem to be very serious about actually wanting me on, your response is somewhat patronizing and you left absolutely no way for me to be able to make any real attempt to joining your "project" as you put it. if your goal was to make an example out of me then im sure you succeeded, sadly with people like you, and that arrogant attitude of "lol some nobody thinks he can make games" is exactly why you and so many other developers have and will fail in your poor attempts to make a game.
If by chance im wrong about you then I will gladly publicly apologize for my statement and be happy to support your efforts in any way i can. But I need some reason to believe that im wrong about you, as of now your not giving me anything. |

this game has alot of potential as long as it is overseen correctly, but at the same time it could easily be over done too. There are as you know lots of important details in the produciton, development and releasing of any game, MMO or other wise. Im not here to tell you how to do it, instead I would like to offer my help in anyway that i can. Im no programmer, im not any kind of employee or past employee for any video game develpment site or company. I dont work with the media, so for the most part i dont really have any credentials to present to you. But what i do have is the voice and opinion of the public and the immediate exposure to the opinions of gamers all over the Dallas, Ft Worth area, if you would like someone who can get, write, report and filter feedback for you and who can also provide some very in depth guidance to getting this game into a market that will take it to the top then please let me help you do that. My writing abilities are quite well, (despite any spelling errors you may see here) and my past with gaming is...for lack of better words ridiculous. There really isnt much of anything out there i have not played in some form, and ive been involved in just about every testing phase of just about every MMO on the net.
So in closing i really just want to help and see this game succeed, i honestly feel i can provide you with some very useful help. I just need you to be willing to give me a chance, feel free to interview, screen, test, quiz and even torture me in order to feel comfortable with me helping you. |
