I'll probably receive a nice time out for writing this, but it's not like I'm all that invested in MMORPG.com. I'll start by asking Advertise for PWE much ? Your article reads like more of an advertisement for STO then an objectively written piece. Revolutionary Space Combat ? Really ? It was a carry over from the flight mechanic in CO , if you played CO you would recognize it. I would say the SFC III was a more entertaining space combat then the  2-D on ramps combat that STO has. In fact a few abilities were transferred directly from CO to STO and renamed. The vaunted ground combat was a cut and paste transfer of CO class specific targeting mechanism .

I'm a least mollified to see that awful random generated content disappear. It consisted of a few maps , shade, populated and decorated differently. Good riddance. The Foundry is about the best part of the game to a degree.

Sadly it's still the same game as it was at release. Same engine and same bad design decisions that cripple the game. It was a cynical attempt by Cryptic to cash in and get a major title once Microsoft backed out of the Marvel Universe project. CO was the immediate result , but STO was going to be their cash cow. Now owned by PWE. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

The NPCs do, in fact, change their behavior over time in response to what the players do.  But not really.. This is where the scripted behavior comes in..  I avoid violent areas because I wish to live.. Technically the Orcs after being beaten time and time again should MOVE AWAY from humans because they fear them.. The first time a player sees the orcs in the "Orc" example, the orcs will try to kill the player.  If they fail badly, or if the player talks to a guard who happens to be willing to investigate the orcs, the orc response will change from "fight" to "leave the area".  The larger the group of orcs, the less likely they are to move away.  Where is the game that will currently exhibit this most simplistic StoryBricks behavior?  If StoryBricks is "regular" scripting and if any AI system is capable of doing what StoryBricks does, where are the real world examples? So according to your logic, if I group up in the game frequently, my team will spend wasted time chasing down orcs that wish to avoid us, since we outnumber it.. I know I would..  I've played PvP many times, and when it's me against 3 others, I run..  Even a dog knows when it's time to turn and run (normally).. lol   Storybricks might be complex, but it is still scripted..

The orc example is not something I've made up and it's not a "pie in the sky" dream.  This is a concrete example from the developers.  If people are going overboard in thinking what StoryBricks can do, you are going overboard in saying what StoryBricks cannot do.  The two things don't magically balance out.  Neither one gives an accurate representation of what the system is capable of.  And we have yet to see ONE substantial fight sequence highlighting such awesomeness..  Seeing is believing..

I do think we (and a couple other people) are in agreement that the system is only going to be as good as what the developers do with it.  It doesn't matter how great the system sounds if SOE kacks it up.

And I do think we (and a couple other people) are in agreement that the system has NOT YET proved itself to justify all the hype..  The system might not be great after all regardless who's game it is.. Storybricks might do well in a single player game, but may not do well in a MMO.. None of us know because Storybricks hasn't been used in any released game so far.. Is EQN their only customer?

Your right, all we have seen is simulations. All we know is what they are shooting for, non-scripted AI. Sure they will use some scripted things for conversation but the AI and how the NPC interact with the world is a non-scripted sandbox of lets see what the NPC do when we set these rules. They are looking for an outcome that will be different from server to server. Will they pull it off? Well simulations look good so far. When will we know it works? Within the next few months as Landmark will be getting NPCs and the Storybricks tools. Players will be working with the same tools the devs have. No hype, just 100% hands on and unfiltered game play.

No scripted AI don't exist. They've shown that in the video. The only thing that Sony is actually doing is expanding the number of responses that an AI will have give the various faction parameters they've set. ( faction doesn't necessarily mean friend/foe, it could be established as helpful/non-helpful, deity commonality/non commonality, the programmer sets the parameters. It is more complex then most games, but it's not new.  In this case Sony is setting a large target. Where my argument in the use of permutations becomes significant. Where talking exponential options with ever encounter. ) All AI behavior is scripted. People need to review the definition of scripted behavior.

Point being , it's a static environment being that your choice is the only variable. Regardless of the timeframe it occurs in, everything refresh's. See landmark resources do refresh . What you did to the environment was not permanent. So much for that living Storybrick. It's just another name for quest line. Some marketing guru decided it needed to be exciting and imaginative to excite the fanboi's. Seems to have worked. The connotation being that one choice builds on the other leading to a path. But hey, believe what you want. Questing is questing. Which leads to building faction , which determines where you end up at end game for more raids/quests. Sony fanboi's are just too funny.

buddy you do know that each NPC gets their own set of bricks that, when confronted with other NPC's bricks, environmental bricks, your PC's bricks and any other bricks in the vicinity, cause said NPC to react in any number of ways... right? this has been explained ad nauseum in this thread and others like it. every NPC is running on a set of variables, not constants. each time they encounter something the bricks and their ranked importance (based on the mob and its personal wants/desires due to it being a dark elf/druid/elemental/whatever) determine how the NPC might react.

Say the NPC is an iksar so it likes water and your character's race is a weak swimmer; the iksar might run straight for the water because it knows it can escape since you cant swim for crap. Now lets say you are playing a mage with a water pet or a shaman with levetate which allows you to continue your pursuit over water with no issues, that same iksar might choose to run for a group of his iksar friends even though they are farther away than the water is because it knows, through the use of bricks, that water won't slow you down and it will end up dying. This is just a tiny example of what is possible with story bricks and how they interact with other things. Story bricks is about interaction between objects in the world and (let me say this again...) how things deal with one another in random ways depending on all variables present in each situation.

Do you understand? Is this too difficult? I can't really make it any easier to comprehend.

You are just confusing people, each npc have a set of bricks which are his variables, but they are not constant ? Do you mean that his likes/dislikes will change ?

Evilized do you understand math and the concept of permutation ? Or does your education not go that far. This is just a set permutations that are programed and calculated based on a single decision. It's not that difficult to understand the key factor that leads to the next set of choices is the first choice. Whatever that is. It may be made the moment you decide to create your toon. This is why faction becomes important, it's your defining limit. A favorable faction/decision leads to a set of choices and vice versa. It a mathematical formula. In the end it still land you in a certain place. It's not infinite because the calculating power and space that would be needed to run and permutation with no limits would be unfathomable. ( that incidentally is called real life ) There is no computer available that could play what some people are suggesting. Fanboi's need to get a grip. It's a game and every event, action , reaction and response by and NPC is scripted. These are not sentient, aware and independent beings , no matter how much your fanboi fantasy mind would like them to be. It's nothing as dynamic as you suggest , that's a fantasy.

 Bro, learn the difference.

yes, faction plays a part but story bricks is not just faction... lol. can someone really be this stupid or am I getting trolled? ban incoming in 3...2...1...? and thanks for taking the time to explain to me the way faction works, I had no idea after having played EQ for 5 years and practically every other MMO to ever come out. I feel enlightened.

Their and there bro, learn the difference. And no, storybricks has not been done before in the MMO landscape, the Sims or the AI from civilization would be the closest thing to what they are putting together but even then they fall short. The entire game is based around the interactivity with NPC'S and the random results those interactions produce... even between NPC'S themselves. Please do some reading before you start stating things as fact.

You're showing your naivety . This is an MMO it's not real life. The responses are scripted and predetermined. The possible outcomes are permutations of available choices. That said the end result is a faction choice. That still takes down predetermined paths. You may not recognize it do to limited experience , it's nevertheless a fact. It will lock out of certain play option and open others. Wanting to open those play option means closing previously opened ones. Sony's game Vanguard which coincidently was designed to be the successor to EQ. Had a similar structure in place. If you had positive faction with dark elves it meant you could roam their territory and enter towns without fear of attack. That applied for all faction that were  " freinds/allied". Ogres were enemies of the dark elves. So you couldn't go near their territory or those allied to them. Fortunately not many. Could you change this standing. Of course , craft your way to a friendly faction status, diplomacy , or kill mobs. Killing mobs was always the riskiest since it could be a double edged sword, since it affect standing with other factions faster then you may have thought. The basis of all MMO's is interacting with NPC's. There is nothing random here. It's a computer program of limited capacity. Bro, learn the difference.

BFD ! It's a faction system. So your actions, choices have affects on the various races and factions in the game thereby alter your access and choice in quests and quest locations. It's similar to what Vanguard had. Possibly better instituted. So they saw the potential of what was in Vanguard and instituted it in this game. Not really ground breaking or earth shattering. In Vanguard you could change bad faction with various races either through grinding quests or diplomacy. Surprisingly Sony is borrowing from a game they've just shut down and adding it to a new game. Meh , let me know when it's something truly new and impressive. As I recall they had something less refined in SWG also.

It is nothing like a faction system, at least not in the way you have compared other systems with. The approach as explain in presentations and via the Storybricks detailing is a little more complex then kills x to make y happy.

But killing X will still make Y happy. You will just have to also collect flowers and build a temple to make Y totally love you. Except that you will have no idea what the result of your action will be, so you will just randomly have some npc love while some other will want to kill you.

If anyone has ever played Vanguard they know that there are 4 ways to affect faction. Killing mobs, questing ( run and fetch missions ). crafting certain items in particular areas or the diplomacy card game. None of what has/is being proposed is anything new or ground breaking. The fact that people are actually excited about this shows the lack of experience and naivety of the general community. There were a lot of faction in Vanguard so it could become a very complicated job maintaining those factions. Coincidently Vanguard was owned by Sony and what they are implementing is from a game they owned ? If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with bullshit.

Did you watch the video? You call those excited about this names but at the same time make supposedly concrete assertions on the topic of the thread.  In order to do this you would have needed to watch the video which if you had you would know comparisons to Vanguard aren't the same.  Yes, this is hypothetical due to SB not being an entirely working system (that we've seen) in EQN.

Yes, I watched the SB. Again there's nothing new here. The only difference is that you have to approach ever npc now to see if they offer a mission or faction perk etc..Instead of having a star or symbol over the head. They've done this in other games. Everything is still scripted. Sony comes along and tells everyone they've designed a new way to slice bread ! We're going to slice it, Horizontally ! People start screaming, Hallelujah ! Sony is amazing etc... All I'm saying is they aren't, everything they've done and are proposing has been done in other games, mainly there own. If you played any number of Sony products you would recognize this. Starting at the original EQ.  The fact that they are now incorporating what was also started, done and in use to a lesser degree in SW:TOR just goes to show the old adage. Ecclesiastes 1:4-11 <-- teachable moment

You dont think permanent change is anything ground-breaking? If you played mmos, and if you like the quest-line that was given, wouldnt it be nice for it to go on? Like after you've have completed your objectives, given an item(s) a playable class or whatever, The AI selects a new foe for your faction to tumble with based on wants needs or if the ogres in Southern Ro are militaristic and like to conquer. Goblins gain too much wealth and are now a faction by itself. The Roh-Song would be like that book in the movie "The Never-Ending Story". None of what i predicted was scripted other than programming the basic "wants, needs". Factions are one thing, but making you care about the world is another. They mention this isnt "good vs evil" that the "good side" might do things that are questionable and it all depends on what you care about. NPC groups are spread all over the world and have Everquest lore tied into them. Conquest in one little area could take weeks or months going back and forth with player intervention like a tug of war.

This AI system would ulltimately be awesome for RP guilds or those who generally care about the lore. Factions are a part of it. Im a paladin i want to help the church, i gain abilities that make me stronger because the more i do for an npc group the more they seek me out, the more the church gets attacked roh-song will tell me where the conflict areas are.  the more "fame" i get the more i access more content by other groups or get hunted.

If permanant change was never implemented. This still wouldnt be a step back. I mean, the fact of no quest hubs or the fact npcs seek you out for quests based on criteria is still a step up. I think people are just bitter about SOE or Everquest for whatever reason they have.

It's still scripted response. There is no puppet master sitting behind the scenes pulling strings to entertain you specifically. It's not how it works or is structured in MMO's Basically an amped up version of SW:TOR/KoTOR. Still establishing faction. Whether you like it or not. People need to stop being so star struck by the pronouncement of the MMO huckster salesman hype pushers.

I agree that the "bad guys" seem to be in fashion with the angsty youngsters these days (perhaps always?) but damn the Sith Warrior storyline is good. After I am done with it, I am going to try a scoundrel, and play it dark side style.

Really enjoying my recent return to this game. I had written it off after launch, but out of terrible boredom, I downloaded it again recently, and am enjoying it immensely.

You have to do Agent story if you did not... Simply amazing.

^ probably my favorite. Although the Merc one is also well done.

Gasp !  Actual journalism ! Informative and enlightening. Good job.

View from my  guild's guild ship

Just running through our Guild ship, initially my thought was this thing is absolutely huge and so damn empty. That's just the main area.  It was impressive. The Guild hall , wasn't as impressive as the ship. My tatooine  Stronghold is large and spacious. These are large time sinks, meant for a lot of grinding. Have fun folks.

Funny enough did I suggest something similar before STO launched... About everyone laughed at me.

But yes, a ship simulator would be a good idea if you want to make a Star trek multiplayer. Using crew of a ship instead of guilds and have the bridge, engine room, sickbay and transporter room would add way more ST feeling than a certain other game in that universe.

It would also open up for interesting PvP (ship Vs ship and even fleet battles) but the question is how many players you actually could fit in on a ship, everyone needs to have fun as well so there is a limit (you don't want to play the janitor except maybe if you run Red Dwarf instead).

I believe a bridge simulator was the original original plan for STO, but it didn't work or something and they ended up switching developers. I think the concept would have a hard time working in a mmo. You know it's just he grouping problem all over again. Imagine if you had to be in a group to leave town and that is kind of how it might have to work. Unless you come up with a different game structure.

You would have to use a structure that is guild-like to pull it off, Putting 25 complete strangers and forcing them to work together would work even worse than pick up raids.

A static crew/guild is a very different matter, guilds have mastered very hard raids in other games and it is not that hard to work together.

The real problem as I see it is for people disliking large guilds. Shuttles and being on planets would severely limit the number of players that don't like being in medium sized guilds.

The question is if the idea wouldn't work better for another IP that have more smaller ships and some larger instead like Star wars (sorry trekkies). There player groups could have ships similar to Millenium falcon while larger guilds could have cruisers with fighters they could launch. Or Firefly for that matter, that IP would work fine as well.

In any cases there is no potential at all for soloplayers, but well for players that would like to own, modify and operate a large starship.

The biggest hurdle to any Star Trek game is the exploration part. It's just not possible on/in an MMO to satisfy some of the more vocal ST fans. Too much combat would lead to howls from the Trekies.. Ultimately any Star Trek game need to entertain and be a time sink of sorts. Some combination of various game could make it viable. You'd have to base it on an economy more then exploration and have conflict that drains and fuels that economy. Exploration will always be limited, games are finite and so are computers. The fall back has to be economic and combat . Which strays from what a lot of people view or hope from Star Trek. STO was an example of how not to do a Star Trek game. The design choice were for expedience. They had CO and just basically slapped a new skin on it. What would be required is something along the lines of ST:SFC series with elements of  Bridge Commander , ST: EF series, SWG, Vanguard ( diplomacy mini game, but modified ) and EVE. And people still probably wouldn't be happy. Too much combat or not enough exploration. It's kind of a no win.

Support cost money , keep that in mind. Even the people in India get paid to fix your bitchy ass whiny problems, about loot or complaint about so and so players griefing. Yes even servers cost money. Perhaps not as much as they use, but they still do. Let's not forget the rent/lease on the facilities that house them and wages of the people that maintain them. Oh while you're at it throw in the taxes that accompany all this and the benefits that they throw to keep a lot of these people employed. Yes servers alone don't cost as much , but keep in mind there's a whole lot of stuff behind those servers you never considered. It's a business, not a non-profit charity.

Honestly I read the first post and while long, it's well written. I just couldn't help thinking. It's a sandbox. Stop whining. You won't be competitive as someone that's been in game for a very long time. There are alliances for that. I also couldn't help thinking to myself that either this person wasn't interested in being in an alliance or was more interested in individual play. Being a loner in this game does not work. In which case he doesn't understand or simply ignored the premise of the game. It's a complaint that is very self absorbed and this one fails, because the person missed the point of the game. CCP gives you the framework to do what you want. They've tried nudging you along etc.. but they can't and won't take you by the hand and lead to you down the path. You are not entitled to succeed in this game, you have to earn it. If you're not smart enough , talented enough or social enough, you will fail. Much as in life.

Rip Off ! Rip Off? They don't need to rip off shit all. EA will do what it does best, buy it ! The real question should be what is Roberts price ?

Cryptic most likely doesn't have the team or the funds for something like that.

It's not a question of staff or funds. Cryptic simply doesn't have the talent or creativity to do something like this.

That and poor engine choice as well as design choices really crippled the game. They were in such a rush to get it out and prove a corporate point about game development and release schedules that, well they ended up with this one legged dog for a game.

Brhahahaha , this ^ ! This is a very cynical attempt to keep the money flowing.

Right back a person who stole money from the Vanguard budget to pay for his drug abuse, and is now rumoured to have taken money from the Pantheon one aswell, I dont care what he did with EQ, this guy is a plague in the mmo industry.

^^^^^^^^^This. It's never happening.

Is it really a surprise ? Look at how behaved during the development of Vanguard. The old saying, " a leopard doesn't change it's spots " comes to mind. I wouldn't touch anything he's put in charge of since those cocaine fueled Vanguard days, Where he wasted and spend copious amounts of corporate money that it forced Micro$oft to abandon the 1/2 finished project. Back in the days when money wasn't much of an issue for Micro$oft.
