1) remake the thread without the spelling error (pupulation -> population)

2) add that gw2 had 14k+ in the first 1-2 weeks

Done sir. Thank you.

Hey all, I remember a lot of GW2 fans posting a xfire topic on swtor board. Well I searched this forum I found it odd that there wasn't a topic for this game regarding xfire!?!

Well here is the Guild Wars 2 page on xfire

http://beta.xfire.com/games/gw2

As you can see, game is experiencing a steady decline in players and playing time. I will keep track of the decline here to raise awareness about the games health.

At launch (last week of August) - GW2 had about 14,000 players.

September 27th - Players: 9,063

You are all welcome to join me in the discussion :)

Originally posted by Praetalus I have been playing MMO's since about 2001. I have never used xfire. I have been in countless guilds in the past 11 years.... I have never been asked to use xfire or talked about xfire in guild.
Statistic 101: Sample needs to be random and large enough, but it doesn't need to be significant compared to whole population. Same sample size gives same accuracy whether you're trying to trying to find out statistics about Milkwaukee's population or China's population (assuming the sample size is significantly smaller than Milwaukee's population).   You don't need to have used X-Fire, none of your friends need to have used it. If there are two million of players and one in a thousand uses it that'll allready give X-Fire sample of 2 000 and statistical margin of error of only a few procents. But if the game is very small, let's say Mortal online, the statistical margin of error would be large even if 50% of Mortal Online's players used X-Fire.
You left out the whole bit about the sample being carefully selected to not show a bias, or barring that, randomly selected from the population. Neither of these applies to XFire's users.
I admit that it's not random or carefully selected to not show bias. I was just trying to say that the sample is large enough, not that it wouldn't have other problems.

With no way to calculate a margin of error, the samples are either 'good' or 'bad'. We don't know the population for most of the games, so we don't know the sample sizes' relation to the overall populations. SWToR is a possible exception, but you would have to believe Bioware's numbers. We do know that the samples are not randomly selected and they are not selected to eliminate bias. XFire's samples are just 'bad'.

Correct. End of discussion. Xfire is a bad sample no matter how you slice it. Not random, no way to measure margin of error, nothing tangible whatsoever.

We had fun SWTOR. I loved you, i hated you, you were my everything, you were my nothing.

I will always remember the times we had together. They were decent in retrospect.

Good night sweet prince. Back to WoW I go.

This is what I don't understand about GW2.  Where is the hook - what keeps you playing?  If you can jump to the highest level to PVP, and content at level 80 doesn't really progress your character, just gives cosmetic bonuses, then how is it going to capitivate peoples' attention after the first couple of months?  When people just play for fun, the novelty can wear off pretty fast.

Why does gear grind have to be the hook to keep you playing, as opposed to enjoyment? Books don't give people gear, yet they hook people.

I never found the gear grind to be engaging, its basically a slot machine. Insert time and money and for 30 days you have a chance to get that piece of gear you want.

So GW2 is like a book. After your done reading it, you throw it away or shelf it for a long long time. Unless youa re a fanatic (PvPer) then you reread it until even that gets boring.

Yikes.

It looks like this is going to be one of those games were you will either have to love cosmetic options or pvp to play for much longer than the lvling process.

I think it will be fun to play through lvling up and checking out all the dungeons, but I don't think it will be a game that you would find yourself playing for years on end as your main game.  It will likely be many people's side game, possbily to log in a few times a week for a change of pace.

Excellent point. Can't see the retention rate staying very high for this game. Will track avidly on xfire.

Some of thbese are absolutely ridiculous. Hang out in cities for 25 hours? Spend 50 hours in the AH?  50 hours for unspecified "guild activities? UHHH no?

You are really reaching here.

You played the game for two days and "it's been tested and proven?" Seriously, any mmorpg 101 will tell you to wait before posting an informed opinion at least before the first month of gameplay is over, or even better, the first three. Right now everything is obviously shiny and new and the excitement over the new game will overshadow any problems or long term issues.

So obvious yet people are ignoring this post.

Then stop making topics only amatuers would. WoW still had bugs and it has been out for 8 years. SWTOR was one of the smoother launches and has less bugs than many other MMOs out currently.
Well using this poll as a indicator...Already 11% of the potential fanbase will be passing on GW2 and we have only experienced the first beta weekend. You can expect the retention rate to continue to dip the closer and closer we get to release, then take a huge nose dive a month or two after release.
Who cares about star count? lol

You know whats weird? Uncharted Waters Online has been slowly winning me over the past few weeks to the point where I couldn't really care less about any big new MMO on the horizon. Who woulda guessed it heh.

I have had a lot more fun in Uncharted Waters Online than GW2, that is for sure. That is where I can agre with you wholeheartedly.

It is hilarious people think GW2 will make Blizzards next MMO B2P also.

You guys are straight loco

Alot more to buy than upgrades and blueprints to gain an advantage in WvW, and the suit has nothing to do with the fact that TERA looks a LOT (and i mean A LOT) better than GW2 graphically and does not have the tired tab targeting combat that GW2 has.

Seems like the combat, and this affects all professions, boils down to who has the biggest dps hits.

The CC and debuffs and buffs are all so short lived that it feels pointless to cast them.

I think mostly it just feels like combat is way too fast.  You arent one-shotted, unless facing a veteran 3 levels over you due to scaling, but you are three seconded.

I know people hate in pvp when CC is overpowered or it feels like you are always locked down, but they specifically said pve was different than pvp, so why cant the pve cc have more of an effect?

i felt the exact same way... and i mentioned it in Local chat and about 10 fanboys and gals wanted to lynch me... rofl at these rabid zombie fans.

but ya... combat is a meaningless blur of spamming your best DPS... very little reason for meaningful use of debuffs and CC's. dodge once and a while and dont get caught in AE. ooops im on fire? errr. 1 v 1 duels you can weave in special attacks and skills but in WvWvW... and  group vs group combat... pshhhh its just spam and pray and watch the kaleidescope of colors.

and this is coming from someone who competes in amateur speed chess so dont anyone start explaining it away saying i must be an old fart with a slow mind and reflexes...

Feel the same way, PvP just seemede over simplistic and not innovative in anyw ay (As Anet promised...)

Looks like crap compared to Tera.

That is being generous to Guild Wars 2. TERA looks about 10-20X better.

Here's the deal.

Guild Wars 2 isn't the first online RPG with no subscription fees. In fact, you could argue that free to play is all the rage right now. What about the Buy to Play model? Well, on May 15th, a "likely" better game will be released upon the world that uses this same model. But let me save you the suspense. The subscription model isn't going anywhere. Quite frankly, we don't even know how Anet will support the game post-launch. If they do a poor job with updates and such, perhaps one could argue that it's the end of the "Buy to Play" model as we know it. At the end of the day though, there'll be room for both and both can be justified. But people want to pretend that Guild Wars 2 is the 2nd coming of Jesus. It's not. Not even close. I think it'll be good but there is some rabid, illogical thinking in a lot of what I'm seeing.

amen. Very well said.

You heard no haters because those that were playing were already invested into the game. This was not a  free and open beta, this was a beta for the fanbois who dished out money to test the game. It is not a good sign in anyway, you guys are literally looking under any crevase to try to spinthe lack of community and communication in the game as a positive by saying "well atleast they werent saying bad things!!!"
It really is amazing seeing these iincredibly arrogant fans telling the rest of us how revolutionary Guild Wars 2 is. The difference is, now after the beta weekend, we all actually know that the game is anything but.

There are several weak links in the chain. The zerg like WvW whcih will be heavily influenced by how much one spends in the cash shop, the not so dynamic "dynamic" events, the horrible ability delay, the graphics that are alraedy inferior to a game that just launched a year ago (TERA), the "new and innovative" questing that is just a reskinned version of what we already have, and of course, the lackluster personal story.

It is hard to pick which is the weakest however.
