Lol,  the gaming world is being ruined by F2p, now most games are becoming pay to win, and its not the little kids using their mom's and dads credit card, its these older people with house's, jet ski's, and all that other stuff you said(that have money to waste), that sit here and spend thousands of dollars on these F2p games just to win. Credit card warriors are the new thing. I know people that spent up to 100k on a free to play game, its just absurd to think about, but hey if you got it like that more power to ya, but in the end it just turns off the older gamers that really like a challenge and the skill it took to compete on higher level, now its just about who can spend more money. guess who that is? Its the older people.

You want skilled games, where money don't matter stick to FPS games, seem to be only market not ruined by F2p now. You can't buy aim! well you could buy hacks, but that's not the same issues as some of these other games, where you can just buy wins. I love the people that sit there and brag about how much money they spent on a video game, just makes me laugh and think how pathetic they are, maybe not in real life cause they have that kind of money to spend, but in the virtual world they are pathetic, but does that really matter?

Its a sad sad era for gaming, All companies are seeing the benefit to f2p as it brings in more money then making the subscription based games, or pay once and that's its.

Money is ruining gaming, its not about good games any more, its about how can this game make the most money, and thats the end of the story. Its not that dev's don't want to listen to the players, they have to listen to their investors more. and that's the bottem line, some prick CEO who don't even play video games, is making the decisions.

Not to mention people spending loads of money on are half ass programmed games coming from some Asian country, All the american's have da monies to spend! and lots feed right into it, otherwise we wouldn't be seeing these p2win games like we do now.

"Increasingly we find ourselves preferring to go play Diablo 3 or some other game simply to escape the daily grind."

You find ur self leaving a grind game, for D3 a total grind game? really? huh? wtf!!!!

you just lost all credibility with that statement. what a moronic statement.

Haters gonna hate, right?

ya, we gonna hate, on shit blizzard north.

The game has been dumbed down, and in 10 years it will be more? how can it be, its already ez mode. they just going to give the boss gear for just entering a raid instance next?

Lol, wow still running strong, because of the fact it was so big in the first place, and so well known, not because its good still. Its like the entry into mmo world, thats super dumb down, so why wouldn't new players entering the market, try it out, its like the start of  mmo era, beside the few that came before it and didn't reach it success.  I think someone needs to learn what marketing is.......

I'm sorry author but this was a piss poor article and you should not even be writing for mmorpg. what a disgrace. i have plenty more i could say but why waste my time.  kkthxbye

Come check out the New Old Hostile space.
After it got shut down awhile back, Its been Revived by the players. come check it out.
Its a space rpg, Not really MMO. But its got a small community atm.
Its had huge makeover recently, and updates. With plenty more in the future

Just got a nice update, to the game. Come check it out!

Shame there's not even a clue of an explanation on the site about what this actually is.

On that site, there is a thing called guide, shows video the game its self. But as just a heads up so people don't waste their time on something they not interetsed, its a Small mmo community now, But its a 2d space game, where you can level up, and collect different gear for your ship, you can fight bosses with a group of people, for speical gear. You can + your weapons making'em better, Their is some pvp in the game, Right now it just got revivied, by players, so its a bit low on manpower.

Hostile space is back! And back the way some of us remember it, before some changes were made. So if some of you played way back in beta days, you might enjoy it now. Heres the website.

See ya in game.

Its f2p again, blitz and loki are not dev'in it nemore though. Some players have picked up the work, and are taking input from the players in the game pretty much.

Just in case people want to see some videos of tribes ascend, without having to go search for it. To make your own opinion, here ya go. They might give you the idea of what Tribes Universe might be like.

FEW Classes, more classes too!

Shrike gameplay

Jumper, Techie

Honestly, do you really need to spend that much on free 2 play games? Its a question about self control my friend, and you don't have none. Yes they feed into your addiction, but its your choice to fall for it.

Lots of f2p games, are very playable, without any money invested. And the one's that are pay 2 win,  do we even call these video games? NO! if you still want to play these games, You lost all reailty of what video games really are.

F2P move is great, It gives us the chance to test the game before spending 50 bucks, on retail. Then 20 bucks a month.

If you spend say 15 a month on a free to play game, thats on par with normal sub, and your contributing to the dev's rather than being a leech. And its only 15 a month. Compared to some of these people spending 100-10k on a video game.

You don't need to pay all this extra money to play premium content in most f2p games. its like extra 20 bucks a month. what are you spending your money on? Pay2Win? Fluff? How can you place blame elsewhere, when the blame lies within.

Nobody forces you to buy fluff, or items that give you advantage, because you can't compete normally.

You want to brag to your friends? Be the best, all it takes, they will evnoy you for that. End Of Story.

Honestly all these people that spend money on games, to get ahead of others, are only cheating themselfs.

You spent 100 more dollers on your vitual heros, then i did. Does that make your heros better then mine, maybe. Does that make you better then me? Hell No! Its ok, we all can't all be good at videos games, some of us need to spend a little cash on games, to make up for their lack of skill.

Key Word

Self Control.

Hello Gentlemen and Gentleladies

I've been playing the beta on and off since early access and I've come to the conclusion that BF3 is confused as to what exactly its supposed to be, it covers so many different elements but feels like it falls short of the mark, let me explain.

Is it a competitive team shooter/esport?

Short Ans: No

While it has an array of decent weapons and tactical elements it lacks any real co-ordination or benefits for team-play. A lot of the time you can achieve more diving in solo than you can working as a team. While it's true you can achieve strategic objectives easier with a small team/squad of friends the game doesn't reward people for doing so and at present its too much hassle to get a squad of your friends in the game let alone squad.

Solo stomping ground?

Short Ans: No

While a single individual can outperform an entire server in score he cannot win a game alone, force multiplier combined with multiple strategic objectives that require to be taken and held at the same time requires more than a single player. So the game isn't squad orientated or for the single pro gamer to stomp around in either.

So it's a team game?

Short Ans: No

While the objective of the game is to achieve objectives as a team nothing in the game helps you to do this, no squad/team management combined with a lack of mass communication and a lack of command structure means that squads are headless chickens all running around with their own agenda based entirely on the hive mind of the individual squad members. I disliked the commander function in BF2 as a 1942 vet however with serious flaws in the game level design and structure or the game itself it now requires a commander, I see that as the only quick solution to the game.

So it's not just a BF1942 reskin?

Short Ans: No

And disappointingly so,
BF1942 had BIG maps, the frontlines where clearly defined and squads didn't even exist, or need to for that matter. Same goes for the commander, it wasn't required. The strategic objectives in BF1942 where enough to keep people fighting in hotspots and multiple would crop up across the map, the travel time and how best to get around it was a strategic element missing from modern version of the game. There is little point in setting up defensive lines in BF3 as it has the same flaws as the BFBC series in that ground is instantaneously regained with the spawn features, 1 enemy breaking behind enemy lines is a whole squad and when that is 1/4 of the entire enemy team its game breaking.

Respawning into instant action, it's a Deathmatch style shooter then?

Short Ans: No

While it has the instant action found in Deathmatch style games, its bogged down with random realism effects and some of which are just irritating. An example is soldier fitness, panting out of breath and aiming shake etc. On the one hand you can sprint across and entire map yet on the other you can only hold your breath while aiming a rifle for 2 seconds before panting like some fat smoker. You can vault over any obstacle waist high but can't climb over anything higher.

Realism you say, so it's a combat simulator?

Short Ans: No

It tries to combine realism with so many other game elements the realism part is lost. It would be nice to be able to fully customize your load out with all the fine details such as sights, scopes, clothes, different grenades and even apply that to vehicles but the RPG element requires you to start with a upgradeless version of each unlocked weapon and level it up, the progression of which means higher unlocked weapons are better than lower unlocked alternatives and so variety and customization is actually removed as you only really have one choice and that's the newest weapon available.

The realism itself also gets in the way of this game being a competitive game for me at least, take if you will sniping. In this game over a game like counter-strike there are so many external factors implemented onto your shot that it becomes less about your skill at aiming and positioning and more about who is lucky enough to fire first. A machine gunner at 700 yards should not be able to outshoot a sniper, it seems everyone has lens flare with a scope despite where the sun is or even if they are underground. I understand this may be a balancing implementation but it's not realistic.

Vehicles feel like plastic toys, we have less control over them than ever before, now it's just point and shoot. With all these graphics I would of liked to see parts of the interior and getting in and out of the vehicle. Even without the aesthetics I would of liked the vehicle combat to be.... well.... vehicle combat. it seems like vehicles are just extras pointless to the main game which is troop based. I was expecting a more engaging experience such as a better made version of World of Tanks combined with sea and air units.

As for air units, they too seem pointless. If nothing more than a nascence, I partly agree a war can't be won with air power alone, the thing I'm disappointed about is the maps are not big enough for air (and ground counter-part) transports. It's one of the aspects I miss from 1942 as well as Desert Combat (1942 modern warfare mod). I miss the collative force getting together in a transport convoy and heading to an objective, scouts and spotters then relaying the incoming forces and counter-forces being rallied to defend strategic objectives.

To wrap this section up, in bf1942 you had a whole navy of ships, waves of bombers and fighters, EVEN SUBMARINES! all controllable. Strategic objectives only boats and aircraft could capture, some only troops could capture. The fights where dictated by the style in which the players used the tools given to them. It truly was a sandbox combat simulator. Today's BF3 is nothing in comparison.

BF3 a massive disappointment and we should all get out money back?

Short ans: No

While it's not the game I would of liked it to be it will have redeeming elements, such as co-op campaigns as well as more combat emersion than its rival titles. Is it going to be the game that clans flood to and last 10 years? No, I don't think so, speaking as a clan gamer myself who plays an array of different genre of clan-able games I do not see BF3 being something I would want to play competitively in a clan, I'll be sticking to MOBA games for my clan/team play kicks.

Feel free to debate anything I've stated above or add anything you think I've missed.

Umm, its public games mostly. In any game, thats what going to happen, do you expect features like this to change teamplay? No, its on the player. Thus why we have voice commucation.

Realism, Hell ya it does. What game compares to it. 1? maybe?

I Pre-Ordered, BF3 is going to awesome, as the beta was already fun. Plus everything wasn't even fully featured in the game, how could you come to a conclussion like this, without the full release.

Vhaln writes:

Suddenly we're getting all these MMO FPS games, and they're starting to look same-old same-old before any of them are even out.  Why can't any of them try something similar but different?  Maybe a vehicular shooter?  Or a mech shooter?  A survial/horror shooter?  I could go on and on, but they can't come up with anything at alll to set their games apart from each other?

The original tribes, is nothing like the games of nowadays. If they brought back the old tribes, i mean tribes 1, with newer graphics, and maybe a few updates, and i mean a few. You would have that New shooter you are looking for. But, will have to wait and see, if its more like t1 t2 or TV. If its t1 t2 style gameplay, We got a tribes game. if its anything like TV it will prob fail just like TV did.

I concur with the writer.

Hacking, is the biggest issues in some online games. These people make a living off this crap. Ruining a game, for pure financial gain. Its not just the modders fault though. Someone has to buy'em.  People that need to cheat to feed their ego's. They will always be around, keeping these modders in business, And their isn't much you can do against them, that does not cost the company too much, thus making it an unviable to do. They could update their hacksheilds, daily. And these failures would just put more time into what they do. I'm sure by now, they have it down quite well, and can make changes quite fast.

For the few comments i have read.

About saying  piracy is Not an issue, I do not think the author intended it like that, He used it for a comparsion. I have quit 2 games due to Hacking, and the non control of it. They think banning accounts, did something. When they could just make a new one. That was their effort to fight hackers. That to me means 0 effort. And that deter's paying customers, for some of these games.

Its really an issue of online versus offline games.

Where with offline games, I could see priacy being the bigger issue, why? Because hacking in offline games effects nobody but that person. If they want to hack in a 1 player game, so be it, let them ruin their own experince.

With online games, hacking is def the bigger issue.

4)  There have always been game critics.  And genres get stale over time and the critics complain about it.  But then there are sporadic revolutions in gaming that take one genre or another (or hybrids) to new heights.  FPS games for instance (once called Doom clones) had been stale for many years, but had been reinvigorated by Halo 3/Cod4, and probably now reentering a stale phase again.

As an older gamer I was around during the great gaming crash of the late 1980's when people thought gaming had run it's course (many gaming companies went bankrupt including Activision).  Gaming has only gotten bigger and broader demographics.  I am today in my 40's and probably log more hours gaming than I ever have.  Definately more than when I was in my 20's.  Older gamers like myself don't go out partying as much anymore because we have kids in the house.  Instead we settle down for some gaming when the kids go to bed...

This is pretty much what I'm getting at.

The majority of games are not bad; just average. But those of us who have been around for awhile see those average games as "brainless," "dumbed down," "eye candy," etc., and so on. We've been here long enough that we're looking for something new and/or exceptional rather than something competently made. And many of us don't bother considering the cycle that you discussed in point four.

As for the demographics widening. . .

I think that the industry has actually split into catering for two seperate demographics. On the side this forum is on, as well as the bulk of the mainstream gaming market, you have the traditional 14 to 25 white male demographic. On the other side, you have the 40+ cell phone and Facebook market. There's room for both audiences in this hobby. But if you're standing in a teen club, you have no right to complain that there's no beer on tap.

Seems like you have more against you then with you my friend. Maybe you should wake up and smell the coffee. If more people agree against you, then with you. Does that make you right? This is a matter of opinion, if 98 people say it sucks, or has degraded, and 2 people say NO. That makes 98 people wrong and 2 people right? Maybe in the little world you live in(called johnnys world)

In your little world it does im guessing. I say your little word because of this " you have the 40+ cell phone and Facebook market. There's room for both audiences in this hobby."  So you took someone's words, that didn't even mean anything along these lines, and twisted them to fit your own little world that you live in.

Facebook games blow, they are pay2win, that isn't even real gaming. Don't even mention that crap on this topic. Cause those games are just crack dealing companys taken advantage of peoples addiction.

Your a causal gamer by what i can tell, Sorry but causal gamers get no play in my "world". They ruined the gaming industry.

But again i stress this topic to you johnny, its a matter of opinion. 98 people say it has degraded 2 say it hasn't.

Just like i stated my opinions above, if 2 people agree with me and 98 people don't. I guess i just don't agree with the mass, BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE ME RIGHT!.

And I still have to purchase races / items from the cash shops?

I refuse to play Cryptic. They ask way too much for whay they offer. I'm getting tired of these nickel & diming schemes.

Serious...  whatever happened to actually having to earn your in-game items?

I don't even want to know how ruthless their "free" model is going to be. You probably have to pay for every step forward your character takes.

That is pretty crazy, i never knew about that. They took a subscription game, and put in a cash shop? That is pretty greedy move on them. Honestly, that makes me, not even want to try their f2p model, if their  pay 2 play model was that bad, imange how they are going to try to scheme money out of people with a f2p model. I didn't see World of warcraft charging people for vanity in game, while charging us a monthy fee. Greedy company for shore

50 bucks for the game, plus 14.99 a month, and i have to spend extra for extras in the game?Thats ludicrous! Thanks for the warning.

I think you guys need to understand the difference between p2w and not p2w.

Check out a game called age of champions on facebook, this game allows you to purchase unlimited amount of units to fight against other people in the game, this game is strictly PAY 2 WIN. how is diablo going to follow that route? Like many say above, if you don't want to be part of that world, you do not have too. Play the game solo! In age of champions you do not have that choice, you want to play without money? TOO DAM BAD everyone else is spending 1000's on a video game. What real gets me is, i can understand some people don't have time to spend on a video games to compete, but why would you just blow couple thousand dollers in a game to get unfair advantage, just like the aurhtor of this arcticle said about cheating, i thought about that right away, it compares exactly the same to it, Why take away from the game it self, by cheating to win! Sorry but money should not allow someone to win like that, Maybe a small advantage like some games have that you can get over with skill is ok, but this flat out p2w model some companies have is insane, D3 is nothing like that. Go play Age of champions online And tell me what  PAY2WIN game is(im sure their are more games out their just like AOC, that are very very very very PAY2WIN, and have no business in the gaming industry), they are just crack dealing crooks takening advantage of peoples addictions. Check out any of klicknation's games, and see pay2win models in full actions, real p2win models, You guys saying D3 is p2w are ignorant.

As long as the game allows the non big spenders(because if you don't spend money on any games your just a leech, support your games!) to compete with big spenders, its fine they have a cash shop, but once they pass the boundry like the compnay said above, its Unaccpetable.
