So I decided to give MMORPG another chance after staying away for a while due to their recent lack of quality writers. Then the first thing I find is this awfully written piece hiding behind a rather sensible title. Guess that means you won't get any more clicks (and thereby income) from me.

Funny (or sad) when you only have to read the title of an article to know the author has no clue. As mentioned several times before in this thread, grind has been around for ages.

I wholly believe that an MMO should never be rated until after a full month of play.

That's rather ignorant of you, since the press have had access to the closed beta for over a month.

And there's never any change between a CB product and the released one of course.

Shadowrun would be great, but I doubt they'd ever manage to create something that comes even close to its potential, so we might be better off without it.

Also quite ironic how half the suggestions by the writer in a column titled "No Elves Allowed" has elves in it.

ONLY 2 million?

What mmo is it that you like playing that sold over 2 million in this amount of time again?

Consider the developement costs. Consider the developer. Consider the publisher. Consider the IP. If you still don't realize why it is indeed ONLY 2 million copies I'm afraid I won't be able to help you understand.

Decent article. But, like others said, what is described as troll in the list is rather a hater, as trolls generally just try to poke people, no matter how they think about the game in question.

In fact, it often takes a great actor to play a convincing villain, and so in a way it's often an acknowledgement of the excellent talent we export in that area.

It definitely is a compliment. Something that I've always noted and that my girlfriend recently brought up is that there are a lot of great actors from across the pond.

Must be something in the water.

It's because to become involved in US movies as a European you generally have to be a very good actor, while as an NA citizen it's enough to just look to Hollywood standards while having the acting talent of a brick wall.

Oh jolly, a top 5 referring to SW:TOR. Was about time, we clearly didn't have any of those in a while.

You have to remember that a game ban is completely covered by the TOS.  They have a right to terminate their contract with you at any time, for any reason.  It's a service, and they have no obligation to provide that service to customers that (in their opinion, not yours) are detrimental to their game.

While that might be the case in NA and other parts of the world, in the EU they in fact can not simply terminate the contract for no reason. If you (for example) have three months left on your sub and they would ban you and thereby terminate the contract without a good reason you can sue them for contract violation. Just because something is written in the TOS doesn't mean it'll stick in court.

If they go out of business or you act like an ass they of course do have a valid cause for an early contract termination.

Seems there's another weekly column not worth reading anymore. Switching authors for this was a bad idea, I gave last week's top 5 the benefit of the doubt, but this one is actually worse. As many said already, the only one that could work is Blade Runner. The rest is all FPS, not RPG (and partially exists already, only thing missing being the movie name).

Should I be mistaken and this was not a recent author change, my apologies, but lay off whatever you've been eating over the past couple of weeks.

Other MMORPG.com article to stir up this tired argument that we will never agree on ... is MMORPG that desperate for article ideas that alls they can do is stir up arguments with flame bait?

So in other words, you are a big time "F2P" fan, lol.

Personally, I think it's nice to have something to read that balances out all of the "F2P" propaganda articles that have been rather common on this site. Both camps should have some sort of representation.

What giant number of "pro" articles? There's one column, where the subject is f2p by default, and it gets trashed by all the haters on this board pretty much every time. Saying both camps should have representation on this page is  like saying Fox News should show things from the Republicans' view once in a while.

And while I usually like Coyote's articles (one of the very few ones left on this site) this one is the same hollow argument the f2p-haters have been making since the whole thing started. In fact it's actually worse, since he's not complaining about grindy and poor gameplay (which a lot have without a doubt), but implying that people have no choice but paying and can't keep track if they pay more than 15 bucks a month. Sorry, but if they are indeed that dense you should probably keep them from any form of money transaction as they clearly aren't suited to run any form of economy. While I know his articles are meant to overstate things he sadly picked the most ridiculous of the arguments against f2p to make his point, which ultimately makes this article fail in my eyes. Besides several p2p games I've also played a number of f2p games and when they start feeling too grindy or boring I simply switch to the next, as they are *gasp* free to get. Now how is that more expensive than switching p2p games every x months?

The last picture of your article is also a very fitting summary of its quality. I know why I usually skip them.

Like a poster before me already pointed out, this is probably the worst possible choice of pictures to make the point. GW is among the games where gear matters the least and there is absolutely zero need to grind for gear (or do long quest chains).

Apart from that all this article does is pointing out what has been said on this and other page a million times before.

Movie theaters are not allowed, by law, to allow minors in to see a rated R movie without a parent or guardian present. And they do get fined for it if they are caught doing it. Just like on Television, the broadcasting companies get fined if they let the F-bomb slip without censoring it. This is nothing new, and the laws are catching up with the technology is the only difference.

Kids still do get in to the movies and they still do get around this so the law saying a movie threater gets fined doesn't stop the kid from getting it. It just makes the threater held accountable instead of the parent.

I'll quote what I said with my original post, "Of course kids can work around it if they're really dead set on getting what they want (like alcohol and ciggs), but it's a deterrent, not a infallible system of corporate parenting."

So if it doesn't stop em whats the point in it at all? why not leave it the way it is if changing it isn't going to stop em?

So in other words one should make sure to abolish also all laws that make it illegal to rob, beat up and kill people. Because it doesn't stop all there's no point, right?

So i've just read 3 pages of posts regarding how the menu driven UI is laggy and sucks. EVE uses a menu driven  UI and this complaint is often made as well. (not laggy though)

DF freuquently gets slammed for its  non-standard UI and yet both games have people who are able to play them despite their differences with what most people are used to.

Is FFXIV's interface really that bad, or just really quite different  because lately I'm seeing a trend that if a game mirrors the standard its called a WOW clone, and when it veers from the norm people say it is deficient.

I haven't played FFXIV so can't tell for sure.  I also realize the trade mechanics are atrocious right now, but that's a topic covered in several other threads.

I still can't help but think FFXIV will do fine in it's target niche, and certainly much better on consoles where the common use of controllers can only help it.

Whether a modern game that isn't driven by endless quest based progression can truely satisfy today's average player remains to be seen. (I suspect the answer is no)

FFXIV's interface really IS that bad, yes. Laggy, needlessly complicated and missing a lot of options that I thought nowadays were standard. It is not bad because it is different or anything like that. To use a simple comparison, it's like if it would be a calculator it would force you to type 5+5+5+5+5+5+5+5 instead of 8*5.

However, the game has multiple other issues besides that and at least Gamespot's review reflects the experience very accurately.

A person that keeps writing such poor articles and compares E3 to PAX should not get paid to write a column. E3 is an abomination where the industry celebrates itself, locking out the people that give them a job. Gamescom and PAX are what proper conventions should be like.

But well, not like I expected much else, I have yet to see an article from her that isn't poorly written. Was my bad for believing in improvement.

Oh and agree with eyeswideopen, but it's also nothing new really.

I never come to these forums for any serious feedback. Aside from the articles written by the staff that is. Otherwise this site is all about comedy.

You consider the articles by the staff serious feedback? Most of their stuff is just as bad as the rest of the forum, the only thing it might give is an idea on how far a game is in its developement or of upcoming changes. Articles that have real quality are few and far. Then again, this is the internet, so what to expect.

I have never had this happen, but no the players don't have any rights when it comes to this. The game companies are careful to write their EULA's so that the customer doesn't own anything. The write it so it is more of a renting thing. When customers are able to play the content that the company owns. You don't even have to have done anything and the company by all right's is able to revoke your account.

Every time someone posts about what their rights might be one of these posts appear.

It almost like someone has a vested interest in convicing gamers that the EULAs and ToS are somehow the highest laws in the land?

Well, no.

EULAs are a contract.  And like all contracts they can be challenged.

How far you get, how hard that is, and whether you are successful (and to what degree) depend on many many things.

Where you live? (Which country) What the problem was?  What resolution you want?  How much money and time it would cost to take various actions?

But as soon as money changes hands - you most certainly have some rights.

If that was not the case, I could ship you all an 'MMO' ( which was just some code I have written that doesn't even install or run) cover it with an EULA and charge you all then keep the money!

Can I do that?  No.  At best I would have to refund the money at worst I might go to jail.  So EULAs are not a 'we get your money and you STFU' type deal at all.

In the case above though, you may only be entitled to a refund, pro-rata of any subscription paid.

This is the only  post in this thread so far that (correctly) answers the question asked in the thread title. Shame it seems to have went unnoticed by the OP.

While I do like Shadowrun a lot (still have a 1st ed rulebook lying around) I do not think it would work well as an MMO. Reason for that, besides the huge expectations it would create, is the amount of parallel realities in the system. Good luck integrating the Matrix and the Astral Planes as well as a proper Rigger-system (which is the smallest of the problems) in a meaningful way so it works properly with other classes. A lot of the content would be for a limited number of characters only.

"With TERA's action combat system, PvP skills will truly separate the n00b from the 1337."

I'd really like to know if it was Knox or Fuller who decided to put this abomination in the first answer of an interview.  Whoever is to blame should be sentenced to playing runescape for life.
