But no need for an update on your adventures as it's all the same for everyone, VERY LINER, from left to right, or bottom to top you move across the instanced zones.  When your on the higher end of leveling a zone you can freely bounce around and gather harvesting.

Don't miss out on all the small caves every two levels or so. This is were you will get the better loot making crafting kind of worthless.

This is slightly inaccurate... While the quest line is somewhat linear (especially the main quest, as it is with ALL elder scrolls games...), the game feels very open-ended to me.  I play very role-playing-centric in that I talk to every npc (most of them have something interesting and unique to say!), I look at every item (you can pick up almost all weapons and armor you see on the ground, plus they have a plethora of barrels and other things you can loot), I travel to every end of the map (I have a mod that takes out the fully explored map, so you have to look around to find what's out there; this made the game really fun for me).  I would like to see another MMO out there right now (made in the last 10 years) that has this depth of both story and role-playing/open ended playability.  I agree it isn't a full sandbox, but it gets pretty damn close when you play it the way I have been.

As for the homogenization of the classes...Isn't it because of balancing? There are so many classes and so many specializations that I can't imagine it ever being truly balanced. In the sense that no one feels left out.

I'm trying to level a druid tank and I asked a friend how were they? He told me they utterly sucked during the last expansion. My heart sunk and images of the "good old days" of FOTMs started appearing before me.

Maybe, just maybe, by taking some things (like your melee skills as a healer) they're making more/all specs viable because now they're being better balanced.

At least, this is what I'm hoping for. Otherwise I'm gone. I've no time to be told what to play or how I should spec.

 

 

Hah, welcome to WoW.  This is how this game has always been.  I used to play a pseudo-melee hunter when the game first came out.  I had a blast.  I never got to the raiding portion of the game, but I had alot of fun in PvP and leveling.  People constantly complained and now you can't even play that build, they completely removed it.

WoW has done alot of interesting things with the game, the music is amazing, the story while you level is pretty immersive (for WoW), but they are ALL about having a "good" spec.  It's how the elite players want the game to be played and that's who the developers cater to.

Here I am playing this Jedi Consular.  I mass murder my way through planet after planet of living, thinking creatures.  Then I finally come face to face with the evil Sith Lord who is responsible for the deaths of untold innocent lives.  I fight this guy and beat him in combat, and just when I'm about to swing my lightsaber to end his miserable existence the game puts on the brakes and says "NOPE, that's a Dark Side choice!  Let him live for Light Side points!".

Uhhhhh, wait, wut?  I just literally slaughtered, and I'm not even kidding, about 5000 people in order to get to this guy but killing HIM makes me evil?

The dialogue choices were just as ridiculous.  I would have these conversations with my companions about how Jedi should be compassionate and only use the force for good and to help people.  Then the dialogue ends and I run down four hallways showing dozens of sentient creatures about as much compassion as my wife has for fireants in our yard.

I still remember to this day, even though I haven't played SWTOR in forever, a mission on Coruscant where my only objective was to kill 40 of these Justicar guys for absolutely not other reason than when I walked into the zone I got a popup mission to randomly murder 40 people for XP.  I almost quit then, but I really wanted to get my $60 dollars worth of "story" first.

So yeah, getting back to the point, I would love to have an MMO that isn't about slaughtering your way to level XX.

Haha classic.  They have plenty of movies that aren't just about slaughtering people.  Even most of the star wars movies only had killing in self defense for the good guys.  Why does this have to stop at non-interactive media?  Games have the potential for so much more!

... what? There is so much potential in video games that is not tapped into because of people with your viewpoint flooding the markets.  Games have the potential to be an entire experience, not just an addictive "click this button to kill that thing!"

I'm not saying that all of the things you mentioned are good or bad, just that it doesn't have to be just that.  Think of "Jurassic Park" the video game: you come onto this beautiful island full of exotic animals to take a look at what the park claims are "real dinosaurs"; you wander around the park and realize that the entire park power has been shut off and you have to find a way off the island.  I can see a whole lot of cool scenarios in a game like that that have nothing to do with combat: hiding, treating wounds (yours and others), eating local plants to survive before you find your way off the island (but make sure they aren't poisonous!), finding shelter/building shelter, breeding dinosaurs, ...

I realize that previous example was single player, but it works just as well with mmos if they design it right.  Eve online had a great vision for non-combat based play with their walking-in-stations.  If it hadn't have failed, you might have been able to strategize from stations, gamble, see shows or something (why not have movies or plays you can attend in-game?)...

The sims is another example of a game that had no combat (I never played the online version, but I assume it didn't either).

Great work on ESO!  Every update is bringing the game closer to it's Elder Scrolls roots!

Also, I have to add it...PLAYER HOUSING!  FFXIV has great player housing already.  Bring this game into the modern world!

I'm glad you are posting on this site.  While there was only a slim chance I'd play this game given all of the bad feedback I've seen so far, I'm not going to give a game a chance that treats its players like this.

I'm all for open sandbox gameplay, but verbal and in-game physical harassment is a plague in almost all online multiplayer games these days.  It ruins the game completely when the game devs and customer support staff are on the side of the harasser.

I will not be playing this game.

Pay to win = Hearthstone

Like many have said before, Eve is a fantastic game.  I just don't like space combat.  I love the world.  I love the lore.  I love the music.  I love the sandbox aspects.  I can't think of many things that are bad about the game.

That said, I will almost never play Eve again (after having about 3 or 4 years of mostly inactive skill gain) simply because I hate space combat.

If they lived up to their word and implemented walking in stations with all of the role-playing ambitions they had from the beginning, I'd renew my account today.  But until that happens... I will not be an Eve Online customer.

Also, seeing as they just canned World of Darkness (and canned walking in stations a while back), I have almost no hope for CCP to ever bring me back to one of their games again.

Love em.  Hate em.  I will never play a CCP game as long as they keep screwing things up.

I hate to say it, because the genre and atmosphere of the game is fantastic, best around, but I have to agree with the OP.
 
The skills are just not fun for me.  I think the thing that kills it for me is that, while they have a ton of different synergies around different skills, they are based strictly around specific weapon types.
 
You want to have lifestealing?  You HAVE to use the assault rifle (I believe that's what it was).  You can't use hammers or claws or anything else, you have to use an assault rifle.
 
It would be very simple for them to just allow you to use any weapon and then base synergies around skills specifically.
 
I really really don't want to be forced to use a weapon to get the ability I want.
 
It's really too bad... I really wanted to like this game because of the lore and game environment...

That said, who is to say appearance is the only factor to identifying with ones avatar? What about people who identify as queer or non gendered? Would you play a character that had multiple limbs or no discernible facial features? Would you play a blob or slug like creature? Would you play an asexual entity?

If there were more robust RP mechanics like a complex emote system and improved social animations would that help to make you identify with your character more than just looks?

Does backstory matter when making your character?

I know thats a lot of questions to mull over heh.

Basically, what types of no humanoid characters would you want to play, or along side in an mmo?

I would love to see some completely alien entities with perhaps no limbs at all, asexual, maybe floating, I dont know. I like the idea of having a non sexualized character because it frees me of any expectations other players may about my character.

When given the option, I almost never play a humanoid character in games if  I can help it.  Although that said, almost every game only gives you the option of bi-ped/humanoid.  I'd love to see a game where you could play something vastly different.

And yes, backstory matters.  I don't care much if I identify with the character I'm playing, but for roleplaying purposes, backstory definitely matters.

EDIT: Also, I like the idea of playing multiple characters at once, whether that is controlled or uncontrolled (for the multiple parts).  It would be really cool to play a 1st/3rd person game where you had to switch between a bunch of different characters that all fought together.  Maybe an ooze that split into many parts or something?

Basically, what I really want is to be as unique as possible both in terms of my appearance and my skill set.  I really like the character customization of games like champions online, if it had better actual gameplay, I might actually stick with it.  Give me the skill diversity of a MOBA, the character customization of Champions Online, and the story/environment of, say, Saga of Ryzom, and I'll play that game forever.

One thing I've noticed, and given, I haven't done a whole lot of AvA yet, is that while there are a bunch of AvA campaigns to chose from, there is generally only one that is active.  It takes 90 days to switch between campaigns, and you can't have characters from different alliances fighting in the same campaign at the same time (for many obvious reasons).

 

I am an alt-aholic, unfortunately.  I would like to experience AvA with all of them.  I don't want to have to wait 90 days to fight in a populated cyrodiil.

 

This in no way detracts from the very fun leveling experience of the PvE portion of the game, but I kind of feel like I'm not working for any real end goal (I hate raids with a passion) if I can't play test all of my alts in AvA in a reasonable amount of time against a reasonable amount of people.

This is such a broken mechanic is today's gaming landscape.

 

Want to group you MUST be ABC spec, and MUST be XYZ Class and MUST use 123 Set gear...

 

Single target melee DPS ALWAYS loses here... Groups, min/maxers, type A douches always want sustainable AOE Ranged. For one they can just sit back casually moving side to side avoiding attacks that seldom come their way as opposed to the Melee range character that needs to damn near replace a keyboard every session due to sheer amount of keystrokes needed to play at that range effectively.

 

As the OP and the OOP stated, NB's have some great skills that have such unfortunate drawbacks it makes using them almost pointless.

 

These things wouldn't be such a problem if they took out all the "rush mechanics" and just let people play... While you will still likely have those players that want to do a dungeon that normally takes 60 minutes in 10, the game doesn't force you to do so and you don't have to shun your friends and guildmates because they chose a class they like to play as opposed to a class they are forced to.

I hate playing the same class as everyone else.  So far, I've played mostly low level characters in ESO and I've had a blast with just about every setup.  Hopefully I'll eventually get up to higher levels, but I'd rather focus on PvP than PvE at high levels anyway.

My one comment, though, is the second they nerf one of my builds so that it is no longer fun in regular game-play (I could care less about end-game min/max), is the second I unsubscribe.

And thus is summoned the age old dispute between the creatives and the suits.  The creatives will always come up with great ideas that would increase overall immersion and playability of games, and the suits will almost always cut those ideas down since they don't "align with the shareholders".

I love the idea and hope you can break out of the mold.

I played Neocron 2 for a while years ago and loved it.  The feel of the game was awesome.  The gameplay was awesome.  Totally immersive.

Has anyone heard anything about this?  Is it still in development?  I wasn't able to find a whole lot out about it other than what was on that site and maybe one or two others without alot of detail.

This might be the single best article I've read on mmorpg.com.  Thanks for your perfect injection of the art of immersion into a genre that is all about numbers and results.

 

If games were all about this kind of immersion, I would probably be a game developer right now instead of a general software engineer.

I honestly completely disagree with you on this one.  The only benefit of having it the way it was before was to allow the player to choose a weapon visually at the very beginning.  I think this new feature is much more immersive and looks great.  I think a table with swords/bowls/cups scattered about adds to the frenzy nature of the intro where everyone is running as fast as they can towards the exit.  Having racks of perfectly arranged weapons for some reason in this prison (it isn't a barracks or anything) just didn't make a whole lot of since.

 

I didn't actually want to wield a single/dual handed sword, but I was able to pick up different types of weapons almost immediately as loot from the different monsters in the prison.

 

I hope they leave this new feature the way it is.

My hype for this game is almost purely DAOC-based.  I am a huge Elder Scrolls fan, and, while this game does get some things right, there is also quite a bit of stuff missing.  To me, it plays kind of like Morrowind with some MMO-style skills (i.e. primary class skills).  I do really like the sword and shield fighting though.  It doesn't quite feel like Skyrim, but it's leaps and bounds better than most other MMOs and it feels right.

 

Anyway, I am also a huge DAOC fan, and can't wait for the castle sieges.  I figure they can always add more Elder Scrolls content later, but with a solid RvR-style gameplay in from the beginning, I can always wait until they do.

 

For me, the main thing missing from an Elder Scrolls perspective is AI.  I really want to see NPCs walking in and out of buildings, talking to each other, talking to the player, eating meals, working at shops, traveling between towns, etc.  Skyrim did a great job at advancing these RPG elements and I want to see ESO take that even further.  I figure I can still RvR while they thing about adding more atmosphere though.  The combat is alot of fun for me.
