Because it was made by the "man".

One thing I've noticed, and given, I haven't done a whole lot of AvA yet, is that while there are a bunch of AvA campaigns to chose from, there is generally only one that is active.  It takes 90 days to switch between campaigns, and you can't have characters from different alliances fighting in the same campaign at the same time (for many obvious reasons).

I am an alt-aholic, unfortunately.  I would like to experience AvA with all of them.  I don't want to have to wait 90 days to fight in a populated cyrodiil.

This in no way detracts from the very fun leveling experience of the PvE portion of the game, but I kind of feel like I'm not working for any real end goal (I hate raids with a passion) if I can't play test all of my alts in AvA in a reasonable amount of time against a reasonable amount of people.

This basically falls into that realm where socialization, group mechanics and basic "fun"damentals are completely tossed in the garbage.

Adding things like time trials, rage timers, leaderboards, and any other sort of "rush mechanic"  the content basically force players into certain specs and roles and there are always those who are cast aside or are forever in the "waiting to be balanced queue"

People don't group for fun... they group to "win" or accomplish a goal...

This is such a broken mechanic is today's gaming landscape.

Want to group you MUST be ABC spec, and MUST be XYZ Class and MUST use 123 Set gear...

Single target melee DPS ALWAYS loses here... Groups, min/maxers, type A douches always want sustainable AOE Ranged. For one they can just sit back casually moving side to side avoiding attacks that seldom come their way as opposed to the Melee range character that needs to damn near replace a keyboard every session due to sheer amount of keystrokes needed to play at that range effectively.

As the OP and the OOP stated, NB's have some great skills that have such unfortunate drawbacks it makes using them almost pointless.

These things wouldn't be such a problem if they took out all the "rush mechanics" and just let people play... While you will still likely have those players that want to do a dungeon that normally takes 60 minutes in 10, the game doesn't force you to do so and you don't have to shun your friends and guildmates because they chose a class they like to play as opposed to a class they are forced to.

This ^^^

I hate playing the same class as everyone else.  So far, I've played mostly low level characters in ESO and I've had a blast with just about every setup.  Hopefully I'll eventually get up to higher levels, but I'd rather focus on PvP than PvE at high levels anyway.

My one comment, though, is the second they nerf one of my builds so that it is no longer fun in regular game-play (I could care less about end-game min/max), is the second I unsubscribe.

And thus is summoned the age old dispute between the creatives and the suits.  The creatives will always come up with great ideas that would increase overall immersion and playability of games, and the suits will almost always cut those ideas down since they don't "align with the shareholders".

I love the idea and hope you can break out of the mold.

I played Neocron 2 for a while years ago and loved it.  The feel of the game was awesome.  The gameplay was awesome.  Totally immersive.

I see Nukklear was thinking about bringing it back with Neocron Reloaded:

http://www.nukklear.com/#en/_Neocron_Reloaded

Has anyone heard anything about this?  Is it still in development?  I wasn't able to find a whole lot out about it other than what was on that site and maybe one or two others without alot of detail.

This might be the single best article I've read on mmorpg.com.  Thanks for your perfect injection of the art of immersion into a genre that is all about numbers and results.

If games were all about this kind of immersion, I would probably be a game developer right now instead of a general software engineer.

Why try to solve a problem that doesn't exist?

There are MANY negatives and from what I can see, zero positive effects of this decision to remove the weapon racks while escaping from the prison.

BEFORE: You'd run up to several weapon racks, CHOOSE the weapon you gravitate towards and go forth with that weapon of your choice.

NOW: You can choose a one handed sword. No choice, really. There you go, get out there and hold your one handed sword like EVERYONE ELSE running around.

Suddenly, the player's choice is gone here. Everyone looks the exact same. Player's are being forced to have a combat experience they may not want.

It just seems like a silly change... I think the weapon racks should absolutely come back.

I honestly completely disagree with you on this one.  The only benefit of having it the way it was before was to allow the player to choose a weapon visually at the very beginning.  I think this new feature is much more immersive and looks great.  I think a table with swords/bowls/cups scattered about adds to the frenzy nature of the intro where everyone is running as fast as they can towards the exit.  Having racks of perfectly arranged weapons for some reason in this prison (it isn't a barracks or anything) just didn't make a whole lot of since.

I didn't actually want to wield a single/dual handed sword, but I was able to pick up different types of weapons almost immediately as loot from the different monsters in the prison.

I hope they leave this new feature the way it is.

My hype for this game is almost purely DAOC-based.  I am a huge Elder Scrolls fan, and, while this game does get some things right, there is also quite a bit of stuff missing.  To me, it plays kind of like Morrowind with some MMO-style skills (i.e. primary class skills).  I do really like the sword and shield fighting though.  It doesn't quite feel like Skyrim, but it's leaps and bounds better than most other MMOs and it feels right.

Anyway, I am also a huge DAOC fan, and can't wait for the castle sieges.  I figure they can always add more Elder Scrolls content later, but with a solid RvR-style gameplay in from the beginning, I can always wait until they do.

For me, the main thing missing from an Elder Scrolls perspective is AI.  I really want to see NPCs walking in and out of buildings, talking to each other, talking to the player, eating meals, working at shops, traveling between towns, etc.  Skyrim did a great job at advancing these RPG elements and I want to see ESO take that even further.  I figure I can still RvR while they thing about adding more atmosphere though.  The combat is alot of fun for me.

Permadeath could definitely work in an MMO if they made the game less about some arbitrary experience/level/skill progression and more about the world you live in.  Give the game a bit of historical timeline, then permadeath would fit in to the actual mechanics and feel of the game.

Optional starter island is interesting, but they added collision detection?? They might have just won me over completely :)

It really sounds like they're putting a big effort into making this game feel more like a living, breathing world and less like a glorified chat room that most MMOs end up being.  I'm liking this more and more every time I hear about it.

Keep it up Zenimax!

Personally, I am very excited about the prospects of not having an auction house.  I think it was a bad idea to begin with and completely ruined economies in games.
I liked the crafting in Saga of Ryzom.  As for worst?  I don't typically like crafting at all in most games, so they all are pretty boring to me unless they have a cool gathering system.

Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Darkall, SWTOR, and I'm already expecting TESO to be on the list.

I had the same experience with Age of Conan.  Tortage was awesome...

I played Warhammer 40k and Battlefleet Gothic with my friends for years.  I couldn't wait for Warhammer Online to come out.  And from the makers of DAOC, my favorite MMO??? How could that not be bad?  I think proceeded to get in game, make my squig herder and realized you can only ever "herd" one squig at a time.  I tried a bunch of classes, but I couldn't get into them.

I really wanted Darkfall to have the depth of AI of something like Oblivion at least.  There is NO AI outside of mobs in that game.  Very disappointing.

SWTOR? I liked the voice acting... I think what killed this game was the fact that my assassin had the same storyline as my friend's sorcerer.  I know it seems small, but it killed it.

As a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series back since the early days of Morrowind, I can say that I don't have very high expectations for TESO.  If they actually pull of an "Elder Scrolls" game then I will play.  I know they are made by the guys who did DAOC, and I really like DAOC, but I like it for the diversity of classes.  Unless they bring that diversity to TESO, or if it actually lives up tot he Elder Scrolls legacy, I won't be playing and will be disappointed yet again.

First of all, very interesting article.  This is the subject that could easily be (and probably is) the subject of many white papers.  It applies to software in general, not just games.

The complications that games have in particular are that one, games are the expression of someone else's artistic opinion, and two, unlike other works of entertainment such as movies, they are expected to be enjoyed over a long period of time.

As works of art, everyone will have a different opinion.  You only like post-impressionistic style paintings? Sorry, this is abstract modern art.  You really like playing science fiction games with extremely realistic space flight?  Sorry, this is a sudo-fantasy sci-fi game that only has space travel for trasportation between planets.  For video games, alot of this might be due to time or technological restraints, but either way, it is what it is.

The other aspect, time, means that players must continue to enjoy the game for a long period of time, be that 4 hours of grinding through a short single-player game, or 10,000 hours of playing an MMO.  Even if the player likes the game, they don't necessarily want to play it for 10,000 hours.  So developers have to craft a world that is interesting and that has sustaining playability and replayability for a huge demographic of players.

I know for myself, I am extremely picky about what kind of world, what kind of character, what kind of music, etc. in the games I play.  If the combination isn't perfect, the chances of me playing the game for more than a few days is slim.  It can't be easy as a game developer.

For me, rpg games are all about immersion.  Why do you play Pencil and Paper?  It's because you are able to experience this other world and live as another entity in that world.  Why do I play video games?  For the same reason.

I don't care what kind of mechanics are in the game.  If the game is immersive and interesting, it will be fun.  Now I say that, the mechanics have to add to and not detract from that immersion.  It isn't immersive for me to grind unless that adds to the game's immersion.

So for me this mainly entails having a great environment, great sounds, good story (although the story isn't crucial as long as the world feels real and interesting), good AI or interaction with other entities in the world...  If the world feels empty, it isn't worth playing.  If the developers made no effort to make the world feel "alive", it isn't worth playing.

I am honestly very disappointed with CCP after the Incarna fiasco.  I was so pumped to finally be able to fit into the awesomeness of the eve universe.  I've never liked my character being a ship.  I subscribed for years, but mainly just to learn skills in the hopes that they would have some gameplay that worked for me.  I finally canceled it a couple of years ago because they just weren't going to build a full sci-fi experience like they promised with Incarna.

As for World of Darkness, I would definitely play this game.  I've been excited about it for years.  I just don't think CCP will get their act together and actually do it.  When/if they do, I'll be there.  Until then, I'm not getting my hopes up.  They just don't have a good track record so far.

Another one I should add to the list is Saga of Ryzom.  That game still felt a bit empty, but the world had rich enough AI that it wasn't quite as bad.

Come play Wushu OP there something like 50k NPCs that all have an affinity meter which tells how much they like you. They give gossip (old school quest with very limited clues) if they like or even hate you.

What's preventing Western Devs? Stock holders, and complacency, budgets weighted in graphics, voiceovers, and advertising.

Yeah I agree with that.  I have seen a bunch of ads for Wushu but haven't tried it.  I'll have to check it out.  Thanks for the recommendation!

Wurm Online is a true sandbox mmo, not the two games you mention.

Yeah, I've played Wurm Online.  It is pretty crazy and I agree, much more "sandboxy" than the other games I mentioned.  Unfortunately, I don't have time for this game.  Plus, I know it's superficial, but I don't like the way the character animations look.  And on top of all of that, it still falls victim (at least from what I've seen) to the same lack of NPC AI in towns and cities that those other games do.

If it's sandbox realism you want, then definitely don't forget Rust. It's about as real as it gets. You start with a rock and no food.

Hm.. Haven't heard of this one.  I looked at a video on Steam.  Looks interesting.  I'll have to check it out.

I would like to hear your opinion about "life" in a sandbox game such as Mortal Online and Darkfall.  I really want to love these games.  They are really so close to being perfect for my playstyle.  The one issue I have with all of these types of games is that they feel incredibly empty.  It is not immersive to me to see noone in any town for miles and then come across someone who is intent on taking my life.

I would be fine with the hunt-and-kill aspect of these games if they at least showed some life outside of it.  I realise that a game like Skyrim is able to carefully craft content in order to add NPC AI which will live a life inside a town or village, or even travel between them.  MMOs might have to spend their budget on other things.  But why is this completely absent from all semi-modern sandbox MMOs?

Eve Online feels alive to me in that you can find NPC ships in high sec.  You see advertisements by the warp gates and such.  But even that game feels like an oversized arena with guards in some areas to tone the fighting down.  Plus I've never liked thinking of my character as a ship ;)

Now, I realize that all of these games have many other features such as crafting, harvesting, mobs to fight, etc.  But these do not add to the realism of the game, at least not for me.

What do you think?  Is this something that would ruin a game?  Why would you not like to see alive NPCs in the game?  What is preventing developers from adding these features?

If they don't provide Elder Scrolls-style skills, then I have two words to describe whether Four Classes are Enough: "hell no".
