I have followed the mmorpg scene since UO. I have played many games and followed too many others to count. Darkfall reminds me alot of Mourning with all the hype and nothing to show. As good as Mourning sounded I did not buy into it. The same goes for Darkfall. If it releases and proves to be good then I will be more then happy to play Darkfall. But until then it is just a bunch of empty promises. |

One of Funcom's Biggest Mistakes: Too Many Servers
General Discussion « Age of Conan 8/26/08 7:46:27 AM
I agree. They should have made fewer servers but had more capacity for each of them. Like what they did for Anarchy Online. This is how they weathered the storm with AO. They had all these problems but yet they only had to pay for 2 large capacity servers. So they were not really losing money when they lost alot of initial customers. Over time they fixed the game and made it into a really good game. Even most of the big name reviewers admit that it was one of the few Cinderella stories where a game launched horrible and came back. I remember PCGamer even went back and gave it mmorpg of the year later after the problems were fixed. I feel that Funcom will fix AoC because they already proved that they can with AO but they definitely need to cut costs. And having all those servers is not helping things. They need to remember the lessons of the not so distant past. |

"Please would everyone just stop posting about AOC!!" yup sounds good, you sir are just another rediculous post amoung all of mine and everyone elses. Gratz well done and thanks to adding to nothing constructive. You answer is put your head in the sand and move on. Your post defies itself and contradicts, well done another mindless post. The sole problem here is the game is failed, even on their own moderated boards there is nothing constructive. My idea of message boards is you go there to find out things.... all you get with AOC is rage and ranting. Wonder why that is?
Well first of all I never said that everyone should just "shut up and leave it at that". I said that "I do not mind someone expressing an opinion but the amount of anti AoC spam on these forums has become ridiculous." If you had the mental capacity to read past the second sentence you would have known that. Seriously I do not even mind some negative posts but when you see the same immature, unintelligent stuff posted over and over. Its gets a little old after a while. Like I said personally I think that the best solution would be to have a disgruntled AoC player section on these forums where people can go vent. And have a section where people can go to get information about the game free from negative posts. Kind of like what SWG has. |

I really do not see the point of all these posts. If you do not like a game the solution is simple. Uninstall it and move on with your life. I have played a few bad games myself but you will never find me spamming it on a forum. If someone asks my opinion, I will share what I feel are the pros and cons of a game in an intelligent manner. Maybe instead of deleting all the anti threads a better solution would be to consolidate all the threads to one complaint thread or section. |

Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning: Mark Jacobs Part One - What's in a Name?
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/12/08 6:48:11 AM
This is great news. I know that it is just a name but Mythic Entertainment is a name that has been around for many years. So it is good that they are going back to their old name, plus it just has a better ring to it then EA Mythic I also liked seeing that EA has the right attitude towards their different development teams. Like they said without their developers, EA is nothing. It is refreshing to see a company admit that. |

Of course I always prefer to build my own with parts I get off of Newegg. But if you want a pre built one from either Dell or HP definitely go with Dell. They build nice computers. If you do not mind refurbished you might want to also check out their outlet here - www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/desktops Sometimes some good deals can be found there. |

"Sandbox" MMO's can NOT succeed...

As much as I love the Lord of the Rings and really like Turbine, Lotro was way to linear. Its a beautiful game and a good game but it led you around to where you needed to go. If I wanted a linear experience, I would go play a good single player rpg. Give me the freedom to go where I want to go and see what I want to see. That is my perfect mmorpg experience. I want to feel like my character is a part of a living breathing fantasy world. Not some theme park. |

And whoever said UO has no grind hasn't played the game. No one remembers the horrible click-fest to mine, mine & mine? The "leveling" up magic skills by casting again & again? Eve is the best sandbox game out there and it is niche.
EQ beat out UO because it was the first decent looking 3D mmorpg for its time and it was also a copy of Dungeons and Dragons for the most part. As far as not having played UO. No I spent plenty of time playing it. I had a 7x GM character. Sure you could just sit in some cave and "mine, mine, mine" for hours if you wanted. But then again if you did that maybe you needed your head examined. I just went out and played the game. Before I knew it I had a maxed out character. It sure beats the heck out of staring at the xp bar while grinding through "hell" levels. With a sandbox mmorpg you can do what you want. If you just want to grind a single skill out for hours, that is your choice. But you always have the option of mixing it up. With a traditional leveling game like EQ, you only have one choice which is to grind away. Sure some of the newer games today have alot of quests you can run but its still the same leveling treadmill no matter how you look at it. Don't get me wrong I played EQ for a while(it was a decent game). But I played mostly due to it being alot like D&D and I also had two good friends who were playing it. But nothing beat the gameplay and freedom of UO in my opinion. |

NEW Vanguard producer's letter!! ! !! !!!
General Discussion « Vanguard: Saga of Heroes 7/04/08 4:05:19 PM
Very exciting news. I am currently playing Vanguard again using my free time that they gave me. I must say that I am very happy so far. My biggest problem with Vanguard was the horrid performance. Vanguard has definitely been optimised alot. The performance for me is alot better. The lack of customization is kind of a let down but I understand why they did it. I can not wait to see what they do with the new model revamp. I am sure that it will look really good. I also saw that they are doing further optimizations in GU6 which makes things even sweeter. Things are definitely looking up for Vanguard.

Make a game with todays graphics(does not even have to be the best just decent) and have the open gameplay of UO during the T2A era and it would sell like hotcakes. One of the big things I loved about UO was the fact that it never felt like a grind. Your skills just went up with use over time. There was never any experience bar to stare at and you had tons of skills that you could work on. In short when you played UO you just played the game and had fun. |

/sign if you have re-installed Vanguard because of the free days
General Discussion « Vanguard: Saga of Heroes 6/28/08 11:49:02 PM
/signed I always liked the game but the performance issues were a killer for me. I came back around update 3 or 4. Its was better but still not very good. I can happily say that things are alot better. Say what you will about SOE, but they have done a hell of a job with Vanguard. The same can be said of EQ 2 also. that game is alot better too. |

If your interested in other virtual tabletops check out : www.fouruglymonsters.com. This is an online community that use and talk about different VTTs. Actually I do realise that Wizards was not the first to do a virtual tabletop. But I think that it is pretty neat that they have their own officially supported version for the game. Yes it is true that there is a small subscription price but you also get other support material for the game. Thanks for the link though. I will have to go check it out. |

General: D&D 4th Edition - Learning from MMOs

Well I would not go as far as saying that Gygax is turning over in his grave. I can say this though. I have talked with him on various messages boards and I can say for a 100% fact that he DID NOT like the 3/3.5 edition of D&D. One of the main reasons is because it made D&D too complex. Hence the reason for him designing his own game(Lejendary Adventures) which is rules lite. While he maybe might not have liked some of the changes of 4e D&D. I am sure that he would have liked the fact that Wizards of the Coast at least made the game more accessable and easier to play. I myself will always be partial to 1E AD&D(I did like 2E but not as much) but still I am optimistic about the 4E and will be getting it. It sounds pretty interesting and if it truly is easier to play then that is great. My wife has really taken an interest in D&D and maybe the 4E will be the way to go for her. I also really like how they are doing the online aspect of D&D. The idea of a virtual gaming table is just brilliant. It gives all us pen and paper rpg fans a way to play with friends easier.

Vanguard has an "under-rated" feature

If cable/stat companies give out set top boxes and one month free subs just to hook you, about time MMO's seen the writing on the wall. Everyone is competing for your entertainment time and dollar. Mine is precious. I don't know about anybody else. I remember reading that they are going to do a trial in the near future. I think that they are just working on all the bells and whistles so that Vanguard will really impress those that try it. I would say that they are doing a great job so far. Hats off to SOE for improving Vanguard. |
