You are right, this happens in all MMO´s...

I can't think of any other MMO, including WoW, that condensed zone questing in such a way that Wildstar does it. Duskwood in WoW is a great example of how it should be done. Yes it has a small hub, and simultaneous questing, but they balanced progression through the zone and the pace very well, that it never felt grindy/repetitive. But not just Duskwood, you can pick almost any WoW vanilla zone and see that this is true.

 

I'm just using WoW as an example, but every other themepark MMO I've played has had a fairly nice progression.

 

Had a blast from 1 - 50, really enjoyable game and definitely the best themepark mmo I've played since Rift. It actually feels much less themepark than most because of the variety of options open to you for levelling. But once you hit them VR levels be prepared for a major kick in the balls if you're already burned out and fed up with questing, because that becomes your ONLY option. I got to VR2 then almost immediately cancelled my sub. Mobs were giving equivalent exp and gold for about level 20-30 kind of levels.

This is just so laughable. They launch a MMO in 2014 with zero loot roll mechanics! Where kicked players stay in the dungeon and it even prevents the group from bringing in another person? I still don't understand how such a system could get through any QA. ZoS developed the game in complete ignorance of every experience with previous MMOs. Chest and loot stealing... good riddance. We left behind that anti-social shit in the MMO dark ages! That certainly was NOT a feature from the past that needed ressurrection.

My answer to this problem would be that once the chests are unlocked by someone, each person can open it and take their own loot. Or, just get rid of chests completely and put the best loot on bosses etc where it fucking should be in the first place.

 

I still can't for the lift of me believe this game doesn't even have a need/greed system.

This is my first beta too. Had to logout from the game after level 6. The starting zone/quests were awful (exile), but I already knew this from other reports, so I rushed through that as fast as possible. It definitely gets a lot better after the tutorial shit is done with, but that's not saying much.

This hub-based linear themepark quest grinding in this game is THE worst I've ever experienced. WoW could get away with this because of really well done design of the areas in which you were questing, NPCs, objectives etc were fairly nicely spread out (at least in vanilla WoW's starting zones). Here it feels tightly packed into really small areas around the quest NPCs, many of the quests I had at level 6 were like 20ft away.

I've enjoyed the game so far in the last 2 beta weekends. Unfortunately this weekend I finally got to try the low level dungeons, and just because of that I'm now hovering over the cancel pre-order button. Dungeons in an MMO are a major thing for me, I fell in love with group dungeons ever since classic EQ. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. Although the dungeons have great atmosphere, the fall flat in every other possible way. I can't help compare them to Rift, which was my last MMO, the dungeons in Rift are just light years better than ESO's, especially the boss fights. To top it off, the rewards and exp from dungeons are absolutely awful.

So I don't know what I will do, at the moment I'm leaning towards giving this one a miss.

WoW didn't advance anything over EQ, it took a different route entirely.

I think the reason the the movements look so stiff and odd is because there aren't enough animation frames. The animations themselves look decent enough though. This is also really obvious when you see someone strafing quickly with A and D, and changing between two different animations rapidly, those transitions don't look smooth.

 

With running/sprinting it seems they didn't bother to emphasise the weight of characters as the feet impact the ground, even the heads don't bob very much/if at all. But torso and low body movements also seems to be missing.

 

All in all it's not terrible, but a little more work in the animation dept. adding a few more frames here and there to smooth things out would go a long way.

That's the problem, the UI was shit in Skyrim too. The minimal design is ok, even though I personally think the aesthetic they use is one of the ugliest things I've ever seen.

 

I don't get why people keep praising the UI, unless these people are using a controller. The UI is designed for consoles/controllers. This is clearly obvious thoughout the game, from combat to crafting. For instance when extracting you highlight an item with your mouse, then having to press E to add, then R to extract. It's extremely clunky and awkward, but with a controller it just feels right. Skryim was the same, it always felt far more fluid and just 'right' when using a controller.

As much as I would love to have the freedom to grind on mobs through the levels if I want to, it's just really not an option in MMOs anymore. I did a little test (only solo, mind you) during this weekend and the XP gain was absolutely terrible, well, I wasn't surprised.

The real fun of mob grinding in EQ is long gone (though hopefully it will be an option again in EQ Next), and I believe the biggest reason for that is due to the significant downtime required for meditating/regen (as the OP mentioned). That mechanic sounds like an awful idea in todays games, but back then it provided ample time to really interact and get to know the people you were grouped with that often lead to some unforgettable experiences and new friends.  People just don't understand or can even imagine this concept today, which is really sad. Unfortunately WoW took things in the themepark direction and almost every MMO since has used WoW, rather than EQ as a template.

Social levelling, public dungeons etc (I know ESO has them, but they pale in comparison to EQ's) are a thing of the past. Even if you did grind mobs, there's almost no downtime for the social side of things, and no areas really built into the game to allow for it, and like I said the XP seems so small it doesn't seem worth the time.

Anyway, I find it quite sad and depressing. ESO is a beautiful and really atmospheric game and I've discovered some incredible locations that would make the most incredible spots to hang out, but there are no reasons to spend more than a few minutes at these places.

 

 

Personally I don't really care. But I do hope someone comes up with a replacement UI. The ESO UI is a godawful and uninspired, uninviting, lazy ass piece of shit. It was shit in Skyrim and it's still shit. I'm all for function and minimal design (which it does well), but I at least like a UI that looks pleasing, but most importantly appropriate, which here it definitely is not. The UI actually reminds me of modern military shooters, and it doesn't help immersion, it actually breaks it for me.

But those aren't necessarily cheap or free are they? Since you need to pay server rent I believe. Though you could host the server yourself if you don't mind the bandwidth hit. Also those choices are irrelevant when talking about PUGs. A lot of multiplayer/co-op PC games have excellent built in voice chat that make TS/Vent irrelevant, no reason why it can't be done for ESO.

So yeah, I'd really like to see built in voice chat.

I had to get a copy for a friend of mine (we like owning the disk). This is imho, one of my top 3 best games ever. It's an MMORPG that is not on ease mode and you have an avatar that is not an inanimate object, I love that, that is something that is sooo hard to find on todays market.

I know exactly what you mean Arkain! I've played an absolute ton of MMOs, but only feel sentimental about a handful of them, Meridian 59, Everquest and Vanguard. I even played WoW for over 2 years, and loved that game too..but I never had the same feelings about it, or miss it like I did those other games. VG/EQ etc have a special something that is very rare in MMOs that's for sure, and I miss it a lot.

 

I think it's actually a very sad thing, tragic even, that VG has been dying a slow death since it's release, overlooked by so many, and barely even scratched the surface of it's true potential. It deserves so much more, and should be remembered as one of the greatest MMOs in history.

 

Damn, I miss my old VG guild and friends..

Totally agree, the combat does look crap..I'm sorry, but there's no way anyone with at least two fairly healthy eyeballs (and a healthy mind) can argue otherwise. The bounty hunter rope scene in particular made me semi-regurgitate.

The link to the YouTube video earlier in this threat made me chuckle, most of the comparison MMO videos looked way better than TOR.

I'm not a big fan of TOR's art style, but it's not a show stopper. I used to feel the same way about WoW's style, but I came to love it. Unfortunately for TOR, a lot of the animations look horrendous, especially in combat where they don't look very fluid at all.

After watching the TOR Multiplayer Demo earlier today, I'm almost ready to just give up on this game altogether..how bland was that video?!

 Wasn't me than mentioned wiki :) I was just responding about wiki, because overall wiki is 'usually' quite a good/accurate knowledge base.

Really?  Proof?  Oh, and wiki definition doesn't count as it has been shown to be massively flawed.

The typical 'wiki is bullshit' argument is kinda boring now, and if you actually use Wikipedia often like I do you realise it's far more accurate than people would have you believe. 

I mean, that MMORPG is firmly established in the gaming community, the magazine reviews pretty much show that right? Most developers and veteran MMO players know exactly what it means. But you treat it as simply an acronym, which it isn't..think of it as a classification, because that's simply how it's used. I'm not exactly keen on it either. Common sense even tells me, the STO MMO game is also an RPG, so surely it's a MMORPG. :)

Should be getting my game Mon/Tue next week, but I want to start on a fairly healthy populated server (for both races).

So come on, recommend some good UK servers please :)
