Sadly its not "growing up". If anything it is growing sideways. The mmo genre is not as it once was which was creating a game that the creators wanted to play. It is now about creating a game that will try to bring in the most money. Its obvious when you look at the game play, no real grouping of any kind, stop, group up to take out a big mob then see ya. The mmo genre cant even call itself mmos anymore. They are nothing more than single player rpgs that require an internet connection to run and lets you see others playing their version of their single player rpg at  the same time.

They have lost their focus of true co-op fantasy gaming to nothing more than plain greed. Sad but true. The genre is leaving behind the old guard, as you say, but its not for the better of gaming, its for greed only now and that just saddens me. We still have the small indie groups trying to make good games but compared to the AAA gaming companies, the difference in quality is like comparing a prius to a corvette. They just dont have the knowledge or talent to pull it off on such a small budget.

HAHA! Sadly most of the mmo gamers of today wouldn't even begin to get this reference. Its all about instant gratification nowadays.

I want one thing. FEAR! I want to fear for my character. I want zones you have to carefully walk through as to not get killed. No more linear zones. I want to have to watch my back for that level 40 creatures walking around in a level 20ish area. I could care less about pvp. If I want to stroke my e-peen, I will go play an fps game. I want to explore again and most of all, I want to be afraid while doing it. Until they bring back fear into the mmo, Its just going to be the same re-hash of every other crappy mmo that is out there.

A lot is wrong with this:

Fear for a cartoon character? That's a little over the top. Most people have more important things in their lives that whatever happens in a game doesn't matter. The problem with that concept you define is that it will only define gated paths instead of zones. This is not really innovation and most good players won't even see it like you do. The problem after that point also is that once a character reaches level 40, the whole design becomes pointless. A lot of effort for a balanced zone that only lasts for 40 levels, not at all worth trying even.

When you get something of value in your life, you will understand there is no such thing as fear in a game. I played TF2 last night, as pyro, I was the only one able to reach enemy zones  because I do not care about dying. I have the same attitude in MMOs. Perma-death would be nice, except I can just start a new character and not lose my knowledge of the areas. I could just team up with someone, say my gf and build ourselves so we never die. We've done it before and with perma-death, it would be designed to either progress fast or have near-invincible team builds, so it would be obvious from the start. But then, only very few people would make it to max level and we'd play on ghost servers after a very short time.

Wow, there is a lot wrong with yours as well. I mean, you played TF2 and won. good for you to win a fps game. Good for you on dieing over and over again in an fps game! Thats exactly how kids today play mmos as well. No respect for the character they create. Lets just rush the boss, who cares if we die 100 times. There is no penalty for it, so no need to be afraid of it. Just like an fps game. Thanks for helping to prove my point even further on how badly fear needs to be brought back into the mmo genre.

Oh and for your information, I have been married over 25 years and have a wonderful teenage daughter that I value more than anything, But thank you for trying to troll me when the conversation is about Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games and not about what you have or dont have in real life.

If you really had a child, you'd not even care about what happens to your characters in game. What's the worse that can happen? Your character is perma-dead and you get to spend time with your family? Gee, what a "punishment". A videogame character is the most superfluous thing there is. Placing value in it is as sad as those who spend 60 hours a week playing an auction house trying to get rich in a game... instead of opening a business and getting rich in real life.

Not to mention that the terms of use specifically say that your characters are not even yours, so respecting something that is rented and disposable is like respecting toilet paper.

LOL, if I really had a child... You are on an mmorpg forum, the discussion is about what do mmo players want in an mmo and yet you feel you must try to continue to attack me personally. If you want to actually discuss the topic on hand, try again and do it without the attacks on someones character. Until then, I will just ignore any remaining comments from you.

If you're defending him, you might as well just admit that you find that type of behavior to be completely acceptable. Essentially that is what you are saying, in not so many words.

It's not your place to defend this man, and you're too ignorant to even understand why.

LOL, Smedly is just as much a thief (in a non money way) and a liar yet people are starting to swoon at him over EQN. We know the facts on smedly, we only have rumors on brad.

Are you fucking serious?

This is the asshole who blew millions on the epic failure known as Vanguard.

If anybody gives this guy money again, they are completely daft.

Before you say "VANGUARD WAS GOOD".

No. I played it from release. I played it beta, post beta, etc.

The game was a development disaster.

Thats really odd. Me and my group of friends played it from beta and loved it. Did it have problems? Sure. But the real tragedy didnt happen to vanguard till microsoft got it.  Sure they fixed things here and there but they did far worse to it by trying to dumb down the game and make it into a wow clone. Just like they have done to almost all of their games. Is Brad a saint? Hell no. I do think the man has got vision though. I think in the right setting with the right structure, he could produce a hell of a game.

Remember EQ2? When it first came out it ran like crap even on high end pcs. It had tons of bugs and problems and had the resources of sony behind it. Vanguard was certainly not a development disaster. Even during beta of vanguard, I was able to run the game on pretty high settings with little problems. I could not do that when eq2 came out. It ran like crap when I turned on high settings compared to vanguard. The only real issues I ever had with vanguard was at zone lines. Getting knocked off my flying mount when crossing and the few seconds after entering a zone.

I would most certainly play a game that brad makes long before I would even think about playing a game smed was in charge of.

I still dont see how anyone can consider guild wars 1 an mmo. The only massive thing in that game was its massive failure as an supposed mmo. It was at its best a multi player game with online play. Dont get me wrong, I loved the story in that game and the game was fun, But look at the game itself.  No open world at all. Only towns that multiple people could be in. If someone in your group got disconnected, they could not rejoin your party in the instance you were in, you would have to go back to town to get them and then you would basically have to start over and redo everything you had just done . Every single time you left a town, the exact same scripted triggers happened regardless of level/group just as you would see in a single player game. GW2 beats it hands down as an mmo.

The OP had it right though, SOE is by a far margin, in that number 1 slot. Until they get rid of smed, they will never be back in contention as a top mmo company. No company has ever came close to the debacle that was swg nge. The topic isnt worst game company, if it were, I would agree that EA would be the top but for MMOs, nobody comes close to that number 1 worst slot then soe.

I have been playing since rerelease and havent seen this issue either. Its possible that it is on their end but its just as possible it is on your end as well. Several years ago I had an mmo that I could log in and would immediately get disconnected. I had several other ones that worked perfectly fine so I was convinced it was on their end. Its possible it was but it turned out that the game didnt like my network card driver. I had to revert to a much older version and then it played fine. So again, it might be them but considering the sheer amount of people that play without this problem, It is more possible that its something with your setup. Good luck on fixing it, I know how frustrating those problems can be.
I have always said that pvp in mmos need to have serious consequences and no mmo has ever come close to giving a true ffa experience. Look at archeage, You can kill lots of people and take peoples crops and if the person gets killed, he will face a jury of his peers that can sentence them to jail time. The max time I have seen for anyone to get is like 30 minutes. Oh look, I can stand in jail and go eat and come back and play again. What consequence is that? You want a real ffa system, it needs real consequences. Killing and stealing need far harsher sentences. We are talking hours/days/weeks of jail time depending on the crimes. That would get rid of most of the trolls that are only there to ruin others enjoyment of the game.

My biggest gripe with pvp vs pve is that in almost every mmo, there is no real consequences for the griefer. Look at Eve as a prime example. A guy scans you in high sec space, sees you got something worth a lot of money. He attacks you and kills you and then is destroyed by the npc cops. But here is where it all goes wrong. The griefer now turns in the insurance he had on his vehicle and gets his freaking money back for griefing.  I always thought that was a stupid thing to allow griefers to do.

To me, mmo games should have pvp but killing should be rare, not a gank fest. There should be real serious consequences that you would have to be willing to take to make it worth killing someone for. Locking people out of towns is almost never a deterrent. Much harsher punishments should be implemented. These are mmos not fps games. You want to kill just because then go play an fps game. I know I am in the minority on this one and thats ok. When they have crappy pvp/pve systems in place, I play on a strictly pve server or will just skip the game if they dont have a pve server. Lifes to short to get pissed off over video game griefers lol.

I have said it many times before. EQ has been the only mmo that really made you afraid. Fear was a huge part in that game. Fear of death. exp loss, corpse loss, item loss. Folks today get things handed to them on a platter and they dont really appreciate it. Sure it makes life easier, you dont have to spend an entire day trying to work your way into a dungeon and then spending the next day trying to recover your corpse. If a fight with a mob lasts more than 10 seconds people start bitching the game is to slow. Seriously? what is up with that?

Community was also a huge part of EQ. You got a bad reputation, you simply couldnt get in groups. As Wil Wheaton likes to say, Dont be a dick! This was very important for grouping in EQ. How many here remember the good ol fire giants hollering YOU WONT EVADE ME SOANDSO!!! The cheers from others in the zone telling you to kick its ass! How many folks remember being in a huge fight and having folks standing around watching the fight and see spawns pop up that could wipe your group and the bystanders jump in and grab the adds so that you can win? Nowadays people stand and watch you fight waiting and hoping for you to die so they can jump in and steal the kill, that is if you are in a game that actually isnt instanced.

Without these 2 main elements, Fear and community, the mmos of today will and continue to fall short!

You are listening to and taking at face value things said by Smed and SOE.

I guess history really does repeat itself.

Oh believe me, I know all about Smed.

I remember him driving the Matrix Online, a game based on one of the world's most successful IPs into the ground.

I remember him approving the NGE for Star Wars Galaxies and effectively killing off the richest and most complex sandbox MMO there's ever been.

I remember him buying Vanguard sight unseen and not realising it wasn't finished - not that that stopped him launching it.

I remember him rolling out Pirates of the Burning Sea - basically a turn-based counter-game - as 'one of the most detailed pirate roleplaying games the world has ever known'...

The thing is, he is face-to-face, actually a very nice honest guy. The trouble is, the moment you're out of sight or he starts thinking of you as a 'segment' or a 'sector' or a 'demographic', all bets are off and he'll feed you any bullshit he can. His getting an MBA was one of the worst things that ever happened to him.

And yet, Smed is still in charge lol. I have said it before and I will say it again. The ONLY way soe is ever going to get back in the running in mmos and with gamers is for soe to fire Smeds ass and get someone else in there to run that section. Nice guy you say? I dont believe it. As an adult, and I am ashamed to say it, If I ever met Smed on the street, I would punch the man right in his face.

I have played lots of games/mmos in my lifetime and I have never hated a game company or individual until having dealt with Smed. The gaming industry as a whole, would be improved if that man simply disappeared out of it. Smed is to gamers as the NSA is to humanity.

They have to be lieing when they say the client checks in every 300ms. I have stepped out of the circles/cones by more than a second and still get hit. On my side, I have found that if I do not move the absolute second the cone/circle shows up, I will get hit. I have no other issues in the game. Titan was a rough one for me, it took about 15 tries before I was able to beat him. I found that when he does the knock back one, if I am not on an edge of the trail, there is 0 chance of me getting out of it without being hit. So my solution to titan was, if I am in the middle of the lane, to simply run straight at him. I would get hit but I would be close enough to him that I wouldnt get knocked off the platform. Very frustrating to deal with especially on a mob like titan.

I told 8 people I know... friends, friends of friends... who know I have been playing this, about my experience with this suspension. They were on the fence about it because I was talking about it. Now they will not buy it at all.

So they want cheat/spam too? Glad that they dont buy then.

Trolls...

On another note, resubs are coming up soon. Suspended accounts aren't allowed to change their sub options, but I got an email a couple days ago saying my trial period was about up.

So, right now I can't change my account info, remove my pay info or cancel. I think I'll call my bank today and explain this situation.

Yeah, you do that.  Don't cheat next time.

Puts a whole new angle on your posts about the auto bans to stop gil RMT.

I didn't cheat, troll. Do you honestly think I'd care to discuss this if I was involved with cheating and rmt? Think, man. If I really was "that guy", I'd still be doing it, because from what I hear, the rmt advertisements and mining bots haven't stopped in the now 5 days I've been suspended.

What puts what new angle on what? What are you talking about. Are you drunk posting?

You came to MMORPG to complain about a ban/suspension of up to 72 hours for investigation and throw a fit on a place where:

A) No one actually cares.

B) Most people don't even play the game.

C) No one has any ability to help you.

The only actual purpose this has is to somehow cast the game in a bad light when less than ONE TENTH OF A HUNDREDTH of a percent of population received some sort of disciplinary action.

I think that gives me more than I need to feel comfortable with the claim that you are both a cheater and a liar.  Your sole purpose is to attack which is the last refuge of the guilty.

You saw that he is way past the 72 hour mark and still has heard nothing, right?

Where else can he complain? If his account is suspended its not like he can complain the games forum.

I dont know if he actually did it or not but I am the type of person that likes to believe people until they are proven they lied.

Heck, I been waiting to see if something is said to me for how I play. I get people stopping and watching me fight stuff all the time due to being able to fight multiple mobs with my arcanist and being good at killing stuff efficiently. Just because someone excels at doing something, doesnt make them a cheater.

I dont know the exact amount, but I spent over $200 in the game and never got a rare mount. Granted not all of that was spent on keys, probably about 75 bucks worth in keys. They want to tell me what dollar amount they are putting on these "rare" mounts? I mean, if $75 bucks cant even get you one, then how much do you have to spend, $100,$200, more? Sorry. I really enjoyed playing the game with my DC and got to max level, but I grew tired of the constant push to spend more and more money on what is more or less a racket when it comes down to those stupid keys.

Interesting as Noob above said we can't...

Actually, that is not what he said. You can use them in fates, but if you are grouping, they will take up a group slot and people dont like it.

1st is gold spamming. This has been one of the worst gold spams then I have seen in years. Why, its simple, there is no global cooldown on chat, so they can spam it as quickly as they want. Couple this with no easy way to block spammers (why is there not a right click, block person?) and its just a nightmare going into any city zones.

2nd is are you sure? Why is everything you do followed up with a, are you sure box? You are in a single room, only way out is to click the door, are you sure you want to leave? Is there really that many people out there that is so unsure of their actions that you need to be asked again???

3rd is the absurdity of these traveling quests. I thought swotor was bad, but this game makes swotors back and forth quests, tame in comparison.

Overall though, I enjoy the game, it is fun, its just the little things that a new game should not be plagued by that really get under my skin.

The 1st about gold spammers, I don't see the big deal on opening social , blacklist tab and typing the name to block. :)

2nd not sure what to say on this. I'm sometimes unsure when I got to pee. :)

3rd you obviously never played EVE-Online :)

10 HP buffalos FTW, for those who play FF14 and grind FATES will know what I'm referring too. :D

LOL, first off. yes I played eve for a couple years. I have played most AAA mmo's and many ftp ones that have come out since meridean 59. As for typing the names, again LOL, good luck with that, thats not something you should have to do in todays mmos. You should be able to right click on their name and select block. You know, like games have been able to do the last 10 years.

Never played Aion? :-) Probably have not seen so much gold spam in ALL other games in the world put together, then in Aion after few weeks. Also total lack of questing after aprox. lv. 20 as i remember. And zillion other problems (not the least unability for many to unsub at all or with hours of work, ...) made me go away for good. Never looked back. Same with FF14. Loved really a lot FF series on console, but for me FF14 is over. And I'm sure will also never look back over my shoulder.

Yes I did right from launch, spent many nights waiting in an 8 hour queue just to play. At least there, they had a global cooldown on chat and some forms of spam control. Here they can go as much/fast as they want. You also had a much easier way of blocking those folks. I had plenty of quests past level 20, no issues there either and when I unsubbed, had no problems doing that either.

Agree, very boring, but hardly on top of list of problems.

We arent talking about problems, these are gripes, so yes it is on top of my list.

Meh, nothing special.

I would add: total absence of voices with very few exceptions when watching videos at class quests. No voice. No even "hi, friend" when clicking on quest giver. All mute. Then interface totaly meant for console and somehow adapted to kbd/mouse. Invisible barriers whenever you go. Ok, is also game about magic forces, bolts, ... but stil exaggerated with so magic invisible barriers. :-) Then boring to death quests. And not only because of text, that could go, problem is instead of presenting player with whole text, no, one must click 10 times to get to silly end of accepting quest. Btw, never was able to cancel and quest, had to go through all clicks to abandon later. Then forced grouping if one want to continue class quest. Reason I never played FF11. Then - this should made top 3 - that horrible 2.5 sec GCD. That alone would make me wish to stop playing. Then ... ah, enough, you got idea.

Global cool downs do not bother me. I also enjoy tab targeting as well. Invisible walls are a pain but didnt make it into my top 3 gripes.
