New official Explanation of Sub-System Targeting

Cryptic confirms STO out first quarter of 2010
General Discussion « Star Trek Online 10/20/09 2:12:55 AM
Originally posted by Odela See you say that, but have you played the game?
Sometimes a dev team gets lucky with gameplay mechanics, and doesn't really need that much time to produce a game. I played the demo at PAX, and it is the most fun I've had in any MMO, heck any genre, ever. And I was just playing a starting mission. Space combat could really be a stand alone game... If they put some PvP mechanics in and some decent Raid/event content, this game is really set up well IMO, the basic gameplay is just that fun. |

New official Explanation of Sub-System Targeting
General Discussion « Star Trek Online 10/20/09 2:07:35 AM
Makes sense to me. I played at PAX and there really is a lot going on. I didn't even get into subsystem targeting and skills, and it was more than any MMO i've ever played (and I've played over 40).
I'm always for more layers of complexity, but I think the average player would have found microing this waaay too cumbersome. |

ground combat looks like fried *beep*
General Discussion « Star Trek Online 10/09/09 12:57:47 AM
Which ground combat video are you watching?
I played STO at PAX and it was very smooth, especially relative to other MMOs in development. I also played every other MMO there, so i have a good comparison. If you're benchmark is Aion (a non-western MMO), I'd say that STO's combat is much more active and enjoyable. Aion is a little more polished and smooth, but it is also released, where as STO is still in development.

Would You Like A Fleet Recruitment Section For STO?
General Discussion « Star Trek Online 10/05/09 9:43:46 PM
Stipulations: I wouldn't want you guys to look out of 'the know', so you'd have to call Klingon guilds, 'houses' (not fleets) ;^). This has been confirmed recently.
Along that note, I think the Fed and Klingons should be separated somehow. This one isn't as big of a deal... But other than that, looks good. While we're talking about fleets, All Out Assault FTW! :D |

Originally posted by sookster54 First, this is the basic starter ship so there isn't as many combat options as you will end up having. But! you still have power distribution, shield strengths/facings, and abilities. Most MMOs just have abilities (SWTOR will have abilities, and then maybe one wrinkle per class like cover). Just like any MMO, they throw more wrinkles in later. Second, this was a demo, much of the combat sequence they were just playing around with different settings, not even firing.
And no, not 20 mins. Lol, the combat doesn't start until 3:15, it's only a 8:40 video, and 3 'somethings' were killed. Ground plays much differently, you and your 4 team mates mow through groups/hordes of various enemies. They are going for diversity of game play.
But anyway, if you don't like it, fine, but at least be somewhat accurate in your criticism if you're going to say something...

{mod edit} As for STO vs SWTOR. To me it looks like it's coming down to Gameplay vs Story: STO is offering space and ground, both are very different. Space is amazing, it could be a stand alone game on its own. Here's a little gameplay vid from PAX: www.youtube.com/watch (note, work in progress) Ground combat is a little more toward a standard MMO, but you always have BOs or other people with you (always groups of 5) so it is very active. You also have combat and ground almost 50/50 in multiple formats: battlegrounds (both PvP and PvE), episodic missions, and randomly 'procedurally' generated exploration content.
I don't need to go into detail about SWTOR, if you're here, you should already know the amazing scale to which SWTOR is doing the cinematics, VOs etc.
So yeah, it seems to me that while they are both Sci-fi-ish MMOs with 'Star' in the title, they will play much differently.
EDIT: I also like what the guy above me said. I like to think of it as SWTOR and STO as well. I'm glad they are making two very different games, hopefully they both turn out well :)

Faith in Cryptic after Champions Online cash shop model?
General Discussion « Star Trek Online 10/04/09 10:15:46 AM
Originally posted by MMO_Doubter No, it doesn't stand to reason at all. As you pointed out - they are in it for the money. They will lie if it serves their interests to do so. Just because a company wants to make money, and sets up a MT store, doesn't at all mean they are willing to lie... That is a huge stretch.
That just goes along with the general assumption that Cryptic will be offering useful items in the MT store. I'm not in the business of condemning someone for something they haven't done yet. In CoH/V their only MT items with in game stats was this 'mystic fortune' and a bomb thing. Mystic fortune randomly gives people positive and negative effects that last 20 minutes. The bomb thing KILLs the person using it. Yes, you had to die to set off yourself. Lol, wouldn't exactly call either of those things game changing...
So yeah, while they have said there may be in game things that effect stat, they have also said that STO will never become a MT game..
PS. For those of you going to play SWTOR because of this, SWTOR will have MTS too! :D |

"YOU CAN'T" - not a good recipe for Win.
General Discussion « Star Trek Online 10/01/09 12:57:35 PM
Originally posted by Osias Yeah, very good point. If they were going to make an MMO that tried to do everything, it would never be released.
Just think about it, what if a show tried to do 'everything' in the ST universe? Lol, it's just not possible. Rekhan said it pretty well when he said something like, "a lot of the time, development is just content triage". Lol, i think that's soooo true. |

I'm gonna play it out that they're refugees.. until a Romulan expansion is released... there are many players that are going to be doing the same.. heh Yeah, I can't wait to play in Rommie ships. IMO they are the best looking.
I got to see a lot of them at PAX. I got Zinc to even show me this new shiny, almost green chromed, D'deridex. It was awesome :)
Many of the devs told me that they really want to make Rommies playable. The main problem here is time... They can only do so much in the time they have... |

There is 3D movement! What they don't have is full neutonian physics in flight. There is a huge difference there. Many games don't have full neutonian physics. It's hard to do with an MMO and make it right. JGE is having a really hard time. ST doesn't really use neutonian physics that much anyway (though i suppose that is up for debate) so they avoided it all together and went to make some great gameplay. Look at the game play, it is MUCH BETTER than any MMO i've ever seen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCE8q6StGdQ&feature=player_profilepage
Again, you can clearly see the 3D nature, the activity, etc. And this is one of the very first missions!!! Go to almost any other MMO and what do you see in the noob areas? People standing around using one or two skills, that's what...

What the PE seem to forget is that perpetual actually announced later on in dev that they were focusing on a more single player casual game than their little perfect sim that they said they could create, and obviously couldn't.
On no!?! PE wasn't perfect!?!?!
Anyway, it's a ST game so there are definitely similarities in the versions, but the only thing that Cryptic took directly was concept art.
And another thing. People really need to stop with the "no 3D movement stuff". Just watch any video, ANY. There is definitely 3D movement. What there isn't is neutonian flight physics and multiple orientations. Of course, oyu're probably just grossly misrepresenting this on purpose.
Proof of 3D. This vid is real, i'm the one playing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCE8q6StGdQ&feature=player_profilepage |

Well, they do and they don't have the Cardies... Check the vid here: Character Creation Video You can create them, and play them, but they won't be "true" Cardassians. There is much speculation, but the basic feelings are if STO is successful enough, you can expect to see expansions later on that will include the Cardassians, and the Romulans... I, myself, prefer the Rommies.. heh
I actually asked Zinc about the differences between custom races and IP races in my interview with him at PAX. It sounds like the IP races will actually be more protecting the IP than 'true' or 'untrue' races. Basically it's just to prevent people from making a blue skinned heavily deformed vulcan....
Functionally, you'll have similar skill/ability type options for both the custom and member races.
here's the interview, you don't need to watch it though, i just told you pretty much everything said. Lol, i'm really not trying to plug myself. I really don't know what plugging my interview would do though, it's not like I'm going to quit my day job to do interviews (haha, you'll see why if you watch the video, i don't exactly poses an interviewing gift). The info was just relevant *shrugs* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzjFbGWPvA8&feature=player_profilepage

I just hope they have enough time to get it right.
