Clicking that link, at first I tought I went to AoC fansite. Seconds later I realised they were AoC ads..

You people actually trust these reviews? THEY GET MONEY FROM FUNCOM FFS!

Yeah, becuase funcom tried to sell their game with banners on gamesites, it causes the jounalists to be biased...

Sure some reviews properly are, but it's lame just to label a review like that, cus they have banners for the game.

Besides they have only reviewd level 1-20

keep in mind that the standards for MMO type games is so low that it would take something incredibly, persistently horrible for any "official" review to give a game a bad review.  what incentive does a site have to publish a bad review?  bad reviews mean that the dev team and people associated with the game won't talk to your site cuz you trash talked their game.

there's a lot more, and legitimate, reasons to laugh at reviews on 'official' sites other than the game giving the site a lot of money for ads.  although, to deny that money could possibly influence someone is rather naive.

Well if you browse around that site, it seems as if AoC is their ONLY sponsor, as there's not only one, but THREE gigantic AoC banners on EVERY SINGLE PAGE.

Nope, not a chance that the review may be biased.

So far it's looking good for AOC.

Are you really taking a review posted in a site with AoC ads seriously?

Nobody is THAT naive and delusional.

It's definitely annoying doing most of the same stuff over again.  Mind you I did end up doing it in WoW for most of my alts since I preferred certain areas anyway...

The difference is that you were given an option. Having 3 (4 after expansion) starter areas to choose from lessens the boredom of rerolling MASSIVELY.

Also, the forums over there arent nice and civil (not in the General Discussion forums); ony of the developers had to sticky about people not listening to the mad playerbase.

Can you rephrase this a bit? The sentence is kinda confusing.

damn i'm in the wrong course then.  what a waste of 3 years.

anyway...i hate it when they decide to go down the buy the game to access the forums route as its usually the best place for information.

You can't really fault a company that tries to do whatever it takes to ride the initial hype and milk box sales. They need to feed their devs after all.

Now the forums are nice and civil and free of trolls.

There's a very good reason they did that, and I agree with it 100%

You have got to be shitting me. Restricting the ability to post is reasonable yes, but blocking the access completely is simply bad form.

The only other MMO i can think of that did this was Hellgate London. I'm sure I don't need to tell you what happened to that game.

The sole reason a company does this is to further milk box sales, nothing else.

Ok, then someone PLEASE explain to me why I switch the setting from DirectX9 to DirectX10 and the game changes. I'll post screen shots when I get home from work.

Because that's the exact purpose of leaving the DX10 option selectable - to fool gullible fanboys who can't read.

Um.... yes AoC (release version) DOES support DX10, I know because I play it, and I can switched between the two, and the there is a night and day diffrance in graphics and performance when I do (I could provide screen shots when i'm not at work, but probably won' bother since I'll be playing in DX10).

The diffrence in AoC in DX9 and DX10 is greater than in any game I've seen to date, and it's the first game I've seen a frame rate improvement with DX10.

Beleive me or not, don't care... I've been there and seen it.

Look at that. Funcom fools another.

The guy who made the decision to leave the DX10 option selectable really deserves a raise or promotion. I bet he's laughing his ass off reading these posts where people swear their nuts that DX10 is working.

If they did this - I respect them for it.

That's not what they did.

What they did was hyping up DX10 as an amazing surprise launch feature up until a few days before launch and then pull a bait and switch.

You have to be kidding me if you believe that they didn't realize DX10 won't be ready only a few days before launch.

Look how many people this simple move of leaving the DX10 option selectable by Funcom fooled. They STILL believe DX10 is in the game even when evidence containing Funcom quotes are shoved in their face.

Don't be rude, I haven't insulted you.

It's more of a compliment to Funcom's shrewd and slick strategy instead of an insult to some random guy on the forums.

Yeah, I was thinking about this.  Even though they managed to sell 700,000 boxes, and 110,00 CE's that's only what?  45 million dollars?  Woah, crap...nevermind.  I think I see the strategy here.

Yeah keep people in the dark, be as vague as possible, only release pre-recorded media.  Delay buddy keys.  Lock official forums.  Yeah I think I see the plan here.  Make a killing on box sales, and ride the few dedicated subscribers that they retain.

Don't forget things like:

1) Purposefully leaving "the chance to get early access" on ads to milk more pre-order sales even though it's clear they knew the spots were gone.

2) Hyping DX10 as a surprise feature up until days before launch only to pull a bait and switch the night before.

Did they miss any other box sales milking tactics?

If I remember correctly, LOTRO neither made any promises of  having DX10 at launch as a surprise feature nor heavily hyped up DX10 support as a marketing ploy.

Yet another reason this game won't touch WoW - most of the people can't even run it and most can't afford to drop $1500 on a new computer to play one game.

Nah Funcom doesn't care about that. They're content with hiding in their little elitist gamer wannabe corner while "pushing the technology envelope".

My money is on microsoft broken something in directX 10 that needs a service pack toput right, although rumors are that MS have started already on DX11.

We'll see what happens when it happens.

So this brings about the question of why Funcom chooses to keep hyping DX10 until the very last moments.

Do you really believe they didn't realize DX10 wouldn't be able to make it at launch until the very end?

With a core 2 duo your chances are a bit better, but be prepared to lose around $50 if you don't have a better computer available.

There's a reason why mmo's never recieved mainstream attention before WoW.

Big thanks to the small crowd of "hardcore mmo gamers" thinking tedium and time-consuming equates to challenging.

I was going to wait for a trial or something, but I don't think I can wait...

Do you have a "pentium dual core" or a "core 2 duo"? There is a massive difference.

The 8400 gs is also very iffy. I would say you probably have an outside shot at the absolute minimum settings running at 10-15 fps.
