from what i've been told, ea has just given up on the game anyone at ea feels working on anything bioware or tor is a step away from getting a lay off/fired. i have been told ea is now just going to stick to facebook social games as tor has been one of the biggest flops in the history of gaming. and really it shouldn't be hard for them to shut it down, disney feels that tor is doing more harm to star wars then good. so that will help out in getting tortanic shut down.

and who told you that, if I may ask...?

Doesn't really sound like a surprise though. The game was doomed the moment they decided for the craptastic half finished Hero Engine version and cloning WoW mechanics.

Sad. And those plastic lifeless planets, there is no other option than ordering the Death Star for total annihilation.

[mod edit]

Well your post got me till the last highlighted part. I mean, EA execs aiming at at TSW + Eve? Honestly, if true I don't get it.

Not saying it would be bad, but I have a hard time with top execs in EA thinking that and selling it to their pairs.

I'm guessing it is going to last a bit longer...how long? Who knows.   EA wants to see a profit on this and probably needs to for their shareholders.  Judging from the increase in population F2P brought and general consensus in chat, I'd say things are going to start looking up for this one.

Of course, all my opinion of course.

I have to agree with this. It seems that inspite of all the crying about limited skill bars, characters, lower exp etc, that the game still picked up quite a number of F2P gamers. Not so sure they will pick up more subs, (I still sub), but it doesn't appear that it will die anytime soon, and I'm happy about that.

That is true, however how many from these are paying customers?

Don't remember if it was Matthew Bromberg or Jeff Hickman, but one of them mentioned they were aiming at 3 millions players (including F2P).

Also unless they add lots of content fast, most players will leave once their first character is caped.

KOTOR story was much less linear than TOR.

Most TOR side story are way less interesting then KOTOR ones.

One does not lives in KOTOR

SWTOR is supposed a MMORPG: housing is important in a MMO

Another SW MMO with less than 1/10th of TOR  budget managed to have a decent space sim.

Stoory isn't that great in TOR, it's even better in TSW

I don't know for the whole BioWare. I mean Austin studio sucked at making a good MMO (blame some of the leads), but pretty sure the people I know in their Montreal studio would do much much better at making an MMO than them.

Just got the following pics:

So what you can notice is they already have 2 gear hue (ie die) for the gear.

Note also that in the v3 they have not 2 but 3 appearance slots attachements.

Meaning player gear dyes is only a UI away from us.

I don't blame them for not having the space project to come with the game. Space wasn't in SWG right away. Its going to be a sellout if the space will be any good. I'll come back if it looks good.

You know, I know and Bob knows... SW:ToR is ancient history now. It's the game of the past and will never recover whatever they try to do. At best they'll manage to keep those 200k (or what's the number today?) players around and that's it.

500k-750k subs. 2nd Biggest sub based game right now.

Yep everything other then 1st is irrelevant.. Kids these days...

Second time I see you posting that. Link plz?

Did not feel that much of a villain in TOR, more like a greedy peon if you ask...

Too often the dark choices are just about getting $$$. As if Sith or Jedi gliding towards the dark side cares about money.

But well some dark choice were indeed being an ass... that did dnot either fit the IP about being on the dark side.

Back to the space content and SWG: the nice thing about JTL is you had multiplayer space ships.

It allowed players more comfortable with 3D to bring in on friends and put them in turrets.

Then runs after runs, they would start to gettin the tricks and proceed to fly their own ship, side by side with a wing mate.

Eventually they'd start flying alone and more surprinsingly, or not, getting involved in PvP at some point and be good!

One thing you have to hope if they are really making a free roaming space sim is base it not on BFII (too easy so boring in the long term), nor even JTL & Wing  Commander (messy UI and controls) but on X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter.

deleted... should not post today LOL celebrating and had some wine LOL  ... anyway money and power are two factors that can make person evil... both of these factors are present in SWTOR. And sure being an ass just for a sake of it /grin it's there too. I would say all aspects are present, side quests are more money oriented, class quest depending on class...

Sith != Evil.

Too often (90%) dark side choices does fith with the spirit.

yeah honestly i support the game and still play but after seeing whats going on the last couple of days with priorities i think it might be time to move on as well which sucks as the combat is what i enjoy and story. But with that being said they seem to rather push more market trash at the game with priorities over real content. Maybe im just paranoid but im starting to get the warhammer online PR spin from their messages and it just doesnt seem like they have any intention of releasing any real content ahead of market updates and their priorities are way out of whack. If they want to prioritize the cartel market thats fine im sure there is idiots that will spend 100s of dollars on stupid packs every month but I do think majority of the playerbase will leave the game thats left if thats all we get for many months. Heroic space missions to me are boring and another warzone will be played out within a week so not sure where they want to go with this game direction other than cartel market and milk it.

I'm afraid you would be right.

For now the next "real" content seems to be scheduled for March, with Illum then Makeb few months later.

In between very thin updates and cartel packs to milk the players.

Hope I'm wrong though.

yeah ive already started looking around at other games today to be honest for myself and the wife but there just isnt really anything great out there now , man this year has sucked for mmorpgs. Guild Wars 2 a let down , this game a let down now , TSW another letdown blah. LOTR online has a new patch hitting live in a week or two so that might end up being the new home for a bit. It just really sucks that all these newer games release and all of them lack any soul at all.

I like logging in GW2 from time to time, the game is really well polished and it's nice for explorers like me ;)

I enjoyed TSW beta but it's missing this little something. However I found the cutscene and story much better than SWTOR.

LotRo is indeed a nice game. I'd love better animations but the game have many bells and whistle you wish others had.

I bought Rift xpack but don't have time to dig into it. However if there's a studio doing things right it's them!

Been years since I played Wow and well I look forward playing pandas with wifey (to each his own I guess :p )

Can't wait for a remix of: Dark forces II + X-Wing vs Tie Fighter FPS MMO though...

Erm...would a free roaming space sim aspect of the game not sort of involve designing an entirely new engine...since neither the main game engine and the rails space sim engine can handle...?

There's quite none environmental drawing in space content, so even if the game engine sucks it shall be able to handle quite a few space ships and 3D objects.

Howver they have a very serious challenge to make a multiplayer space sim working: they have to synchronise the client's data.

Ie: for now it's impossible as what you see in game isn't exactly what others see. You can feel this in PvP and much more if you do multiboxing.

Always good to see someone who hates the game and is well known for posts about hating it so much (as well as a few others posting in the same way) putting this out.

Don't hate the game, just want it to be better.

IMO it can still be salvaged but alas not with the current trend.

Thing is some of us don't eat the PR bull*.

Finally many of the "haters" you are pointing have a very long record of detailed constructive feedback and suggestion threads, both here and on the official forums.

I'm giving you a few links so you can make your own opinion, and well also inviting you to add your input to them:

Note: in case you aren't seeing that much nice threads, it's because mostly people got bored of BioWare not listening to the, once again, constructive threads, and well they finally let it go.

Sadly my friend list tells me most of the great forums posters we had in 2008-10 aren't playing anymore.
And even more annoying, some of them were game designers or involved at some part in the video game industry. Meaning suggestions and feedback wasn't made of thin air...

I suspect by the time they do deliver this it will be too little too late.

Even if subs would go down for a while, assuming that people won't stay for new content promissed every 6-8 weeks, and I assure you most people will stay as there is nothing on the market at the moment that would tempt them, they will rebound after this project go live.

I don't understand this POV at all.  Sure there are tons of people who play SWTOR because it's the only Star Wars MMO out there.  But plenty of people have had no problem leaving SWTOR for non Star Wars games.  Most people aren't so attached to one IP that they'll ignore other games that might be a better fit for them.

mark my words if a pre-cu swg came back? you'd have maybe two people in tor before they go over to the good game we all like and want back.

That is provided the pre-cu comes with some decent polish and a bit of theme park content too so players don't get lost ;)

I remember before swtor launched, bioware devs held a q&a panel with fans. This guy asked about space off rails and the dev that answered basically clowned him. Saying something like, " han and chewie didnt go wandering around in space looking for asteroids to mine lol". And everyone laughed.

Reminds me, another one from D.Erickson on playing alien species during pax 2010:

"If you can't imagine it making out with Princess Leia, you probably won't be able to play it."

Normaly once a P2P game goes free there is a huge zerg of gamers to try it out. Doesnt mean its getting better just means people that didnt want to pay 50-80$ for the box has a chance to try it now. And as most F2P games the population usualy dies down. SWTOR just felt like playing KOTOR and i cant justify paying a monthly fee or even trying it for free until they turn this into a real mmorpg.

What you just said was that, as of this writing, SWOTOR is like playing KOTOR for free.  Holy hell man, thats the best sales pitch I've ever heard.  They should hire you for PR.  You've all but sold me on trying the F2P.

I don't doubt that they have seen an increase in subs since F2P started because that's all part of the hype and some peeps fall for it however in a couple of months the game will be back to the way it was before.

Question is how many of the new players are really spending $$$ and so providing funds to make the game better in the long term?

Now Gishgeron got it right, would they advertise TOR as a "free" KOTOR well we would get an insane numbers of players for sure. But then, long term (after the class story is done), see above.

Why is the Space Project so awesome when they have not given any details?

Because until they give any details, people can imagine its as good as they want it to be.

I disagree. I actually think it can go both ways as we can see on this forum. Some people here still think that SP is a BS because of no details.

BioWare is not really very good in giving out information about future content. Look at Makeb... or Ilum. They both are coming very soon and we have very little information about it.

I think that they want to surprise people, but sometimes they really go overboard with the secrecy.

Wishful thinking considering past record and latest unfoldings.

The fun part is, that most of the haters are so obsessed with SWTOR that they actually still sub so they can post negative posts on SWTOR forums /grin

We both know i'm no hater, just want the game to be much better ;)

The game won't improve if people keep praising BioWare when they keep half delivering.

(edit: half being generous)

People enjoy it , its not the largest flop in history of mmorpgs and how do you know 6 months from now EA might make its money back or more? I know players spending 100s of dollars just on gambling boxes in game so in a business standpoint its not flopping. I understand you obviously truely hate the game and have a bone to pick obviously , but just because they spent 300 mil on it and it lost players doesnt mean its a flop with EA hiring now all over their company site for devs for bioware austin.

Get your facts straight, they are NOT pushing patches every 6 weeks, its now altered to every 6-8 weeks. lol Last one WASNT 6 weeks.

And, just to note, those are miniscule updates, WZ, or OP or FP or fe dailies.

Ypu mentioned AoC and WHO in contest of biggest flops and SWTOR is bigger flop than those. Im sure there are people that enjoy AoC and WHO still. Its beside the point though.

And we shall see how it works out, but knowing SWTORs history...its not promising.

the last thing i seen on the forums from hickman was still every 6 weeks and thats all im saying to you man is wait and see , they are trying to fix major issues with the game that people are complaining the loudest about . Be optimistic instead of just being negative here and give it a chance.

Last stance being:

17. How are we holding to our six week promise for game updates?

Jeff: I think it is going great right now. If you have being watching in the past 4-5 months we talked pretty aggressively about keeping to a 6-8 weeks schedule for updates and I think we hit that pretty darn good. It is diffcult, let me just put it that way. The development process to stay at quality can be very diffcult in that short amount of time.

We might have a 9 week over the holidays just because we actually let our guys spend a little time because last year we were all here. I think we will have a 9 week between the next update before the holidays and the update after that. But we should be back to 6-8 week updates after that. I see no reasons in the future that we won’t stay on that. We will keep trying to 6 but for the sake of quality go to 8 if we need to.

We will be doing another one of these closer to our next Game update so we will be back!

BTW please allow me and the investors to disagree with your statement. TOR failed very hard on most people expectations. Seems to me the right word would be: deceived ;)

TOR development in short:

  • 6 years: started in Dec, 2005
  • 200ish millions:  3+ times Rift budget, 5+ ttimes AoC
  • 800 people vs 200ish for other MMO

All that and they were bleeding subs even faster than SWG and had to go F2P even before the first year.
To my knowledge none game whent that low that fast.

[mod edit]

Hate? Why for?

These are just facts.

BTW check AoC and WAR...

Well to use this point every mmo out there beside LOTRO (rohan area) and gw2(fails in other areas) are failures.. They all have tagging.

LOTRO doesnt have rush for clickies for years now, thank you.

And open tagging is best think in LOTRO...well...since launch.

Sooooooo...why SWTOR, game that is out in 2012 doesnt have things that other have for years now (public quests/rifts/open tagging/personalized clickies...to name a few)

Open tagging in LOTRO has only been out for a couple months since ROHAN has launched.  So open tagging has not been out for years.

Top of my hat, few things you wish TOR had from LotRO:

  • Toggle hands, boots, cloak/back, shoulder slots
  • Gear dyes
  • Appearance tabs & a good Gear UI
  • Wardrobes
  • Recall to house (ie space ship)
  • Housing
  • UI skins, addons
  • Target of target transfer
  • Interesting crafting
  • Sitting on chair
  • Chat bubbles
  • A world that feels alive
  • Good NPC AI
  • Socialisation tools
  • Day/night cycle
  • Swimming?
  • Pet classes (You can't use companions in full groups in TOR)
  • Non pet classes (You can't solo conveniently in TOR without companions)
  • Good FPS a myriad of graphics settings and a draw distance slider
  • Good network synchronisation
  • Nice environmental music
  • Fluff & minigames
  • More than one type of weapon per class
  • "Realistic" environments

and EA had little faith in it as well.

"When I was in EA we were deeply concerned about how boring SWTOR’s gameplay was. And that was back in 2010. They finally realized the truth and decided to delay the game for another year to try to fix it. The final build was more fun by several orders of magnitude than the previous, but it was still not enough. It felt like another WoW. They failed to innovate in any sensible way. They bet everything on the franchise, the VO and Bioware’s signature narrative (which if you have played Mass Effect 3, you’ll know it’s not what it used to be anymore). Lucasarts realized the game was going to fail and forced a new deal in 2011 that would remove them from the production credits. George Lucas may be a bad moviemaker, but who can doubt he is a terrific businessman."

since some people still to this day claim EAlouse was discredited somehow, here's a revealing quote from a guy who worked there up until a few months ago.

Read the whole thread here and I have to admit this is an interesting quote. As always in those there's a part of truth the difficulty being which is it ;)

Anyway, whatever the game sucks now and it's delivering content and improvements so slowly that you'd got to be really bored by anything else to enjoy it atm.
