I've seen this come up here, elsewhere, and even on the official SWTOR forums.  Players want to spend Cartel Coins on the expansion instead of buying a direct download with their credit card.

It all comes out of a potential customers pocket, whether they make a purchase directly on their credit card, or they use their credit card directly to buy Cartel Coins, then purchase the expansion with the coins.

Whats the benefit of buying the expansion with Cartel Coins as opposed to other means?  Is it because freemium players want to buy the expansion with their complimentary coins?

Help me understand this.

Yes some subscribers were keeping the CC for the bigger updates

Step 1)

  • Developing a MMO based on WoW, only.
  • Betting everything on (fair) custscene, (cliche) story and (nice) V.O. with meaningless choices.
  • Not delivering as many gameplay features as what's existing in others MMOs.
  • Having most of the in game features with lower quality than most MMO.
  • Not optimizing the engine, server side for network synchronisation and having good NPC AI, client side for good performance and nice graphics.

  • Designing the game around a cartoonish graphical chart with heroic proportions.

  • Outsourcing art without a good quality control nor IP / lore validation.

  • Not delivering a world but setting everything on rails.

  • Making PvP based on stats.
  • Delivering a sub par space shooter.
  • Not listening to player feedback, before, then during the beta. Have a we know better mindset
  • Not managing efficiently such a large project.
  • Over hyping the game

Step 2)

  • Launching an unevenly polished game during a very bad time frame.
  • Making Classes changes impacts either negatively PvP or PvE at each iteration.
  • Struggle to fix the bugs and improve the game play
  • Pushing content in game without taking into account players feedback from the test servers

  • Not adding content fast enough.

  • Implementing new features with still less polish than in other games

  • Lie to the customers about poor FPS performance

  • Butchering the lore with non fitting gear and things like non force users force lightning others.

  • Havig a bad PR with keeping the we know better attitude and self congratulating themselves
  • Not addressing the main players concerns and keeping players in the void.
  • Convincing EA top managers people left because the monthly fee not the way to go instead of not worth it.

Step 3)

  • Implement one of the worst F2P MMO model, making people play for tools (UI and so) not for content
  • Make the game barely enjoyable for F2P
  • Scam players with real cash lottery
  • Oblige former players to pay a sub to get their "rewards"
  • Oblige players to pay for Christmas "gifts"
  • Do not add much content in F2P but mostly re-skinned assets
  • Keep wasting $$$ on the space shooter, dedicating a whole team.
  • Keeping hyping sup par features "going to love the speeder" Yeah sure.

Step 4)

  • Make subscribers pay for future major patches (free in other games)
  • Do not allow player to pay said content with earned in game currency (CC)
  • Not extending the much looked after Class Story
  • Bring back world PvP as timed events only

Step 5 (Taking guesses)

  • Limiting world PvP to very specific "bigger" instances
  • Still not separating PvE and PvP skills
  • Adding re-skinned human skeletons as new species only.
  • Making a BattleFront like space sim (boring long term) vs a X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter/JTL
  • Pushing back UI addons/skins
  • Not adding mini games like Pazaak, pod/swoop racing
  • Keep making people to pay real cash for color (hue) changes on the gear (Revan set *cough*)
  • Not adding appearance tabs nor gear slots toggles.

What's puzzling here, is after SWG failure and post MMO history of half success, you'd think people would learn from these mistakes, especially when they were involved in them.

But no, it seems TOR managers are digging their grave deeper and deeper at each iteration.

It isn't an expansion.  It is just a game update with a fee attached.  Makeb was originally slated to launch with 1.5 but was pushed back, and now they want you to pay for it.

Maybe because they decided to beef it up and release as expansion? Sound business decision. As you know it's coming in Spring 2013, so obviously it''s going to be more content that the "original Makeb". My opinion of course.

You wish...

Can't find the post anymore, but some dude stepped in some time ago and stated a friend of him actually worked at EA and said top managers where concerned by TOR.

She also mentioned Makeb was like 4h of content and (jucy part) there won't be class story in Makeb but world ones only.  We know know this part is true.

Also said the SSP mostly vaporware. Only a way to tease players to stay subscribed.

That does not mean that it's not beef up. We already know there probably won't be a class story. And SSP is not coming anytime soon. What I meant was that the "Makeb version" which was supposed to be free content was probably much less then the "expansion Makeb" which will be released in Spring.

Of course we have no way of knowing right now, but we might be able to determine this based on incoming informations.

If "expansion Makeb" also includes - flashpoints and maybe operation and warzone  - it means it was beefed up. That's my opinion anyway.

Only time will tell. We will discuss this subject again soon enough.

Hopefully Makeb will be way more than the supposedly 4h worth of content to wich I would read as 4h of recorded VO.

Because let's be honest here leveling from 50 to 55 in 4 hours seems very fast to me.

Then they can beef as much Makeb as they want, thing is class V.O. was pointed as too costly by mr big boss and on the back burner. We now have a confirmation.

Lifeday in SWTOR is as  awesomes you can make it for you. OK, I am a bit drunk /grin, but Me and my guildies are running together evrywhere  and having fun with fiireworks, music boxes, tinsel bombs and robots following us aroung... atmosphere is pretty. We had a quite party started in front of Karraga,,, not behind him as his fartd are deadly..... we avoid his back pretty muvh all the time. Boy he was pissed. Then we killed him, not sure how that actually happened but we did,  and then we were dancing on his remains, trying to avoudd the burning oil, I think though somegody got siome minor burns /shrug.  Fireworkd are great, Gandalf mush have help with preparation,

Lifeday is for people who can create it.... so we created sandboxy Lifeday. We did not need anybody to feel absolutely fantastic.

You all have your all fantastic live day in SWTOR. wherever you want to have it:) and don't forget to bring the tinsel bomb - it is fantastic!!!!!

PC. OK I can barely type /grin Cheers and good night :)

Hmm Roleplay sums up the party events this year with SWTOR.  On their anniversary.

It's like telling your kids to watch TV on their birthday, and telling them to have fun.  Everything on TV is free, but those whistle toys that blow outward, a celebration cake, and those party face masks cost money, so they are off limits.  None of which can be afforded for your very own kid.

Hrmmph!  We are the kids here.  And I do feel like I went to my own birthday party and was only allowed to watch TV. :(

 Nice analogy.

You forgot to add they'd have to pay to have the cake coming along their birthday. ;)

or Bioware even lost their hardcore supporters by now, with that "event".

Wouldn´t be surprised..

It will take more that this to loose hardcore supporters. Don't hold your breath here. Yes, we are disappointed, but we are not prone to overreacting over little things LOL.

Till then I was willing to pay them for trying to improve the game.

With the latest scam, I could not bear keeping subscribing anymore.

I mean paying for Christmas content? Also  the items are mostly  reskins like the speeder (old new), or  values changed in the hue parameters like for the revan's gear?

Then looking at the future:

  • World PvP will only be based around timed events
  • Makeb is far from landing
  • No new V.O. Class content: only wolrd ones
  • Multiplayer & 3D Space content is still a wet dream
Then no targert or target transfer, no mouse over healing, no shared legacy bank accout, no dual specs, no gear dyes, no convenient appearance tabs, no hiding gear slots, no chat bubbles, no companions roles kits, ...anytime soon.

Interesting article. In fact it points at most of the issues.

However I strongly disagree with the premium pricing for some stuff.

Ex: 100$ for a new space ship or even $20 for each player to have access to guild halls.

Prices have to be cheap, so many player will open their wallet and also they won't feel milked doing so.

Meaning they will be more eager to spend and spread how "cheap" is TOR.

Finally, in essence, the article is saying that they might indeed be making money, but in the long term they are hurting themselves and would make much more cash with a good F2P model.

You wish some top managers at EA would read that article and ask for some answers..

No jumping is like going back to black and white TV.

You can still enjoy what you are seeing but it's not the same experience ;)

So I bought the life day orb for my daughter character and it's not even well done.

The hands of the character are clipping inside the orb itself, making the whole look bad.

Wished they took a few more minutes to set the item position bit higher, so it would actually levitate in the hands.

[mod edit] Schubert concurred, and he also mentioned that the numbers support BioWare's current position. "Almost every conceivable metric is better. The numbers have blown away our expectations, which means good things for the players and the game," he said.

Interesting enough the subs number are now under a non disclosure veto.

Then how many players are really spending money in game?

And how much?

Seems to me FUNCOM gesture is quite fair.

You get something every month and even rebates on the cash shop.

Unless you aren't planning to play the game long term you would loose money requesting a refund.

3.) Did they increase performance? The game ran like crap at launch.

4.) Did they balance PvP? Tanks and healers were almost unkillable when I played.

They have added now 2 warzones but removed open world PvP and its not coming back.

Incorrect. Open world PvP is 'coming back' around February/March according to the latest livestream Q&A. :)

Also, another hit to everyones expectations of the new Illum came from a recent interview with Rob Hinkle, Senior Systems Designer for SWTOR.

Exclusive Interview: Rob Hinkle at Bioware on PvP

Question 11: What is the future of Ilum and world PvP?

Rob:  Ilum will again become relevant to the game world, though perhaps not in the same way it once was.

What he really said was that Illum won't come back as a world PVP zone nor there would be any new dedicated PvP zone either.

Then he stated world PvP will come back as timed events that eventually will be repeated from week to week or month after month.

the market was ready for a STAR WARS MMO,,they made it , and sold it

stupidly enough, i bought it,,a waste of of money

after the 2 week honeymoon, this game only has lightsabers left,,and theyre bugged too

their "space missions" is a joke,,look at STO

some of the stories was good,,,but mostly it was star trek episode quality

if this game cost 200 mio to make,,i wonder how much of that went DIRECTLY  into EAs own pockets

maybe ill play a EA game again,,but not withoui at least 14 days trial

the STAR WARS IP has suffered a lot because of this,,GG EA

Andryah is one of the very few I put on ignore long ago and never missed it since then.

You just can't discuss with this person. Reading his posts was a pure waste of time.

Back to TOR, please don't blame EA for TOR. I mean well blame them for not having stepped in the game management earlier as well BioWare wasted milions of dollars without supervision from EA and delivered poorly in the end.

The post copied from the original link in the OP: SWG never charged for Life Day gifts

but then, it was and is still a better game. maybe the devs should go read about wookiees, because they dont celebrate life day to make money. they could have easily given out life day gifts to the community to celebrate the holidays, but instead they tie it to the lame cartel market, trying to get a few dollars out of the gifts. PATHETIC. maybe those few dollars can make up for the subscription im about to cancel, as im tired of not being able to email my guild as well.

buh bye lamest star wars game ive ever played

More threads on the official forums all these from paying subbers on the matter

life day items on cartel market insulting.

Well i love swtor but I have to say this makes me mad. This is the first mmo that I have ever played that makes you pay to enjoy holiday fun. There should really be quests to get these items at least for subs. This is a big fat fail imo bioware.

Life Day

I really dislike people who feel they are entitled to things, and I'm not going to say I'm quitting and never coming back because of it, but I'm sorry, BW & EA's answer for Life Day & 1 year anniversary is pretty messed up. Here's 25 consumable fireworks, thanks for subscribing to the game for a year! And then they go ahead and put a load of items out there that you have to pay RL money for? I mean the full pack is what, $20, Seriously? I don't want an in-game mail with 10 items in it, but c'mon.

It's very disappointing you aren't putting any effort into an event for it, when it's the perfect way to go about your 1 year and x-mas, but that is what it is. To not even put together a quest chain to earn at least a few of the items though, and make every piece of Life Day cost $$ says a lot about this company and the future of the game.

Christmas is swtor - no event, just cartel packs

So it was officially confirmed that there will be no event, and the life day packs are all we are getting.
Probably biggest letdown so far

Im not saying its right or wrong, to be honest if someone thinks the biggest let down in a video game is there is no event then im going to guess they really dont like the game to begin with and they are just trolling.

Thing is it's  not about requiring people to pay to play a MMO, it's about asking people to pay for features that are better and free in other games.

Requesting people to pay on top of their subs for fluffy items for Christmas gifts is well, just saddening.

Then they're asking $20, which for a MMO isn't that cheap.

Also the supposedly best item, the speeder, isn't even new as mostly a re-skin.

Well yes and no... in a post interview a dev stated they won't exactly bring back Illum or an open world PvP but more events based around PVP.

These events won't be persistent either but would eventually come back weekly or monthly maybe.

It's just preview, so quality of pic is not the best... not buying it though.. so bear with me

Actually this is a reskin of an existing model. Well they added a few poly for the lights...

However, this doesn't mean that we don't have any in-game events planned for the future! We'll have more information for you sometime after the holidays.

Thank you!

I mean, seriously?

Reminds me the 1.6 Livestream Q&A

"Jeff: Our intent right now is to update the Cartel Market weekly. We can do more often if we want to. You saw an update just 2 days ago. We put 1-2 new items on, changed some prices . We are experimenting with what works and what people are expecting. You should see another update next week.

Before the holidays, I don’t want to give you an exact date, we got a really big cool update coming.

Damion: We are currently slated for the immediate future a new Cartel Pack every month for the next few months with all new super rare items inside the packs.

Jeff: Oh ya and the stuff we are doing for Life Day, again which you will see before the holidays, are absolutely amazing. Do you have a list of items?

Joveth: I have a list of items right here. Czerka LV-1 Celebrator.

Jeff: That is the one, I am super excited about it. You guys are going to die when you see it."

The new mount is more or less a re-skin of an existing model.

Honestly I died a little inside when I saw that, especially since they're asking $20ish to get the holiday items (even for subscribers) and don't even have an event.

Seems to me they crossed the fine line here.

Once again did not thought they could dig their grave even deeper.

It boggles the mind that there is pretty no place in any mmo where you can just pvp on EQUAL footing. Stock class is in nearly any equipment based sport in the world or standards are in place so technology doesn't outstrip skill ... yet mmo's fail on this each and every time.

You want to prove your skill? Then have the balls to fight with equal gear as everyone around you. I see very few demonstrating the testicular fortitude to handle that. There are so many rewards that could be put in placed that has nothing to do with gear escalation.

If a stock class was put in game I would pretty much play it every day. I grew up in sports and it is about fairness and proving personal skill ... not how expensive and high tech my gear is. It would be pretty much telling one hockey team to wear equipment from the 60's against modern equipment. Equal skill would get SQUASHED!

I love how this won't happen until after 1.6. God knows how hard it would take to change numbers on gear. Perhaps their 200 man team is too busy taking over a year figuring out how to make characters sit in chairs.

Let's have WZ with a few rules and restrictions like:

  • Same gear  (stats wise) for everyone
  • Limited slots for specific roles
  • Provide VoIP for PUGS

Usually you don't see people on bicycle running again others with motorcycle, nor 10 goalies in a team and none in the other.

Then it will start being interesting

They should give teh Star Wars IP to Blizzard. I am sure Blizzard can turn Star Wars into a hit.

No......give it to SOE.

Give it to Trion, but only on the condition that they make it a sandbox game. They are smart, they will figure it out.

Yes please.

Blizzard would not be that bad too, but it seems Trion is faster to deliver and much more closer to the players.

Cool story ;)

Here's a detailed transcript: Clicky

Few things to notice:

  • Massive? influx of players with F2P. However doesn't tell if they spend money at all.
  • Non subbed players will soon be able to buy more characters slots.
  • Expect Illum in march with PvP and more... new amazing buldings mention in PvP note (lol)
  • New itemization in Makeb, ie your gear will become obsolete.
  • Makeb supposedly soon but suggesting at the same time Republic isn't done.
  • If you aren't in the top tier in PvP, gear wise, you'll keep being ganked but they'll try you not to...
  • Space "secret project" not dead but don't expect it before say... 1 year?
  • Focus on milking players with new cartel packs each month
  • Weekly updates on market during holiday
  • Chat bubbles, ready check, ... on backburner.
  • Legacy expect slight changes. Apart that not even in the talked about subjects.
  • No minigames in any close future
  • Cathar success will make or kill any further attempt at new specie because it's expansive.
  • Note the lack of emphasis on V.O. content

Speaking of 1.6 & life day orbs, they are already in the game files, so you can already check the upgoming items: here
