MMOs blew up with WoW, and WoW did a great justice for the market by showing people these type of games are fun and paying a monthly fee for a game that has steady content added to it is worth it. But along with every good thing to come out of something there is always an equal and opposite reaction... that is now instead of being older teenagers to older adults dominating the market it is now the preteen to mid teen "I want instant gratification" consumers that are the dominating factor.
DFO will be full of the elite "I am better then thou" players forever, that is what the PvP crowd has always been like, it is just the level of maturity that use to go into a good board warrior topic has dropped so low that it's actually kinda sad.

Actually WoW did a lot more. Before WoW there was only EQ and the stigma that EQ players had was horrendous. Reports of people killing other in RL because of the game were rapampant. What WoW did was turn that MMO player stereotype around. My friend said it best
"WoW turned the way people viewed MMO players from Jukies shooting up in their parents basement to the avg joe" and thats the truth. WoW brought MMO games, and those who play them into the main steam.

Yeah but that is kinda the MMO gamer in the publics eye who don't play them. This is more or less about the community over on the darkfall forums that are basically a bunch of internet thugs and day dreamer glorifying the game to the point they're going to be disappointed because they have unrealistic expectations.... What is completely Tasos and the DFO developer's fault for keeping everyone in the dark for some many years.

Even though I'll never activate my WoW account again because I have no intentions on leveling to 80 I've always said WoW was the game that set the mmo market in stone... I mean look at how many games have been pumped out since it came out? Almost as much as the entire industry seen prior to it's launch. That is amazing. WoW is just not my game, and as far as I know Darkfall might not be also, but I highly doubt that because the 3 things I know are in game are more then enough reason for me to play it until something better comes along(mortal online, for example might be a better game bu who knows?).

I voted for assholes but I do trust them to an extent, I just wish they handled giving us up to date information a little better, when they had the "beta preview part 1" with all the beta tester comments I was expecting a follow up a week or 2 later, I'm sure with this next phase they might share some more info with us but I find it sad Gianna has basically become their scapegoat to not giving us any information, even though they claim that was not the goal of the previews when it would seem otherwise.

Community.

I'd like to preface my observations with the clarification that I'm not making a global indictment on Darkfall forum posters.

That being said, that community is inhabited by some of the most vile, rude, crude, grammar impaired, immature brats I've ever run across.  I thought WoW had a nasty bunch (and it does) and Vanguard's community had some real gems when it was in development.  But man, it seemed like every other post on the official DF forums had a blistering list of responses whose only purpose was to insult and denigrate the OP.   Oddly, I don't see it on these DF forums so much, at least not to the degree as the Aventurine forums.

Of course, I realize not all DF fans are like that, any more than all WoW players are like that.  It was just shocking to see the number of insulting responses to posts on so many posts.

But, typical of hardcore pvp games, you'd better have a thick skin, because the personalities don't get sweeter in the game.

I agree the darkfall forums are over run by morons but the great thing is once the game launchs you'll get to kill them all!

Well the game has been in developement for a long time, he probably just wanted to know if it was more recent or if it's old, what is valid because it is hard to take anything said 3 years ago about the game real serious because at the time they talked pets and stuff that has since been removed

LOL @ the guy who said warhammer delievered everything they promised, if you would've followed warhammer from ithe day it was announced to when mythic got ahold of it you would know the game did a complete 180 and even mythic left out player cities and all the stuff they originally promised.

I've already decided that if melee is as "meh" as it is in the Elder Scrolls games that I'm going for a thief/mage type of combo. Hopefully there will be spells like cameralon, charm, fear, a posion/dots. Better watch out, if you see me move through the trees you're fate is already sealed.

There is no invisable spell in the game.

There is however suppose to be a few versions of incognito from UO, what changed your name and looks. It's been said you'll be able to change your alignment, name, guild, ect. to disguise yourself. Also when you move you make noise unless couched.

The incognito stuff I read from a dev journal of some sort, they might have removed it since then like they did pets.

These are all old videos from August :)

Forget very little armor, just fight naked. It will be like naked bum fights.

If you don't have armor on then anyone who gets close to you with a good melee weapon will most likely destroy you.

scenario 2 wont happen because.... *drum roll*  there is no say chat.

stfu dude quit spreading lies, there is a chat don't believe this troll.

Scenario #1:

You are at the Bank with a couple of your buddies dropping off some of your recent loot you've acquired.  Suddenly, you are ambushed by another group of players.  You and one of your buddies is killed, as well as a couple of the attackers.  Your last buddy then tries to frantically loot you and your buddies corpses before they are picked clean by the other players that stood by and watched the fight.

How often will something like that happen?     This will happen quite often but if it is anything like UO people who loot "blue" characters will be flagged as a criminal and will be fair game to anyone in the area, now they could easily start to bank as they loot but the fact they'll die and might take a hit to their good/evil standings could prevent this.

What could you do to prevent it?   Try to avoid banks where evil players can get to you at, stay in a city and make sure no one is sneaking up on you if you find a bank out in the open, keep your eyes peeled and make sure to bank your most valuable items first!

Would you try and take vengance on anyone that looted your corpse?  (The Devs have said we will be notified somehow when other players loot our corpse).     I wont have this issue because I'll probably be someone trying to loot your corpse, if it happened to me I'd probably respawn so far away from where I died I'd have no way of recovering my items. I would make a mental note and be sure to PK the guy down the road, and I have a pretty damn good memory.

Scenario #2:

You are with a decent-sized group of your Clan down in a dungeon.  After a few hours of working your way down to the Lair at the bottom you finally kill the mob and take your rewards.  On the journey back out of the dungeon, you encounter a larger Clan that tells you they own this dungeon and your Clan will need to pay them a "FEE" for entering it.  The "FEE" is all the Rewards that you just spent the last few hours trying to aquire.  Knowing that your Clan will all die in trying to escape without paying the "FEE"... you reluctantly hand it over.

How often will something like that happen?   It depends on what dungeon, how close it is to a populated area, and what all drops in it. If it's a dungeon full of farmable resources and mobs that are easy to grind on then yeah I can see someone claiming it as their territory and trying this. I honestly can't see it taking 2 hours to clear to a "boss" because Tasos claims there is 'hundreds' of dungeons. They'll probably take like 40 minutes to clear with maybe some epic style dungeons that take longer... what would most likely be controlled by large alliances.

What could you do to prevent it?   Well the fact they did not straight up PK your group might mean they're afraid of getting a negative rating and being flagged as a murderer. You could attempt to dump all the "awesome" stuff you got onto one or two guys while the rest of you hold them back and he tries to recall to a safe location, the fact yuo can literially block movement would make this a valid tactic. You could attempt to kill them if they start to deliever the first blows, better to go out fighting then on your knees.

Scenario #3:

Your group has just ambushed a small party of Enemy Faction players as they were leaving a small dungeon.  Each of the players you've killed has quite a stash of decent loot on them.  You notice a couple members of your group are looting each body in turn as they die rather than wait until everyone is killed.  They are taking only the loot that sells for the highest amount as well as any other very nice items.  By the time you and the rest of the group finally finish killing the entire party... there isn't much left to loot except for some very heavy items that don't sell for much.

How often will something like that happen?   This will probably happen a lot, especially in PK vs anti-PK battles where the blues will most likely suffer no penality for looting you. This is why being an anti-pk sorta sucks, all the town sitters follow behind and take all the good stuff. Mostl ikely these people you just killed will have nothing more then what they needed to engage in a fight or 2 for the fear of losing it. So in the end you probably lost nothing of great value except an extra set of armor and weapons.

What could you do to prevent it?      If it was someone you saved let him know he's blacklisted. Ask the PKs or other people you killed who looted them, they might tell you just so you can start something with them. Kill the people looting if you can handle a hit and then yo and your buddies go out and hide until your're not gray anymore. Tell your alliance/clan/city about how much of a scumbag he is and see if he can be added to the KOS list for the city's guards and clans.

Scenario #4:

Your large Clan has just entered a large-scale battle with an Enemy Clan.  The numbers of dead are starting to mount up on both sides as the battle wages.  During the battle you notice several groups of players roving the battle-field cleaning out the bodies of the dead.

Do you ignore the scavengers and concentrate your forces on defeating your designated Enemy?  No, I would have a team of guys looting so they couldn't.

Will you commit a decent-sized group of your Clan to kill the scavenger groups and recover the items of your slain members?       Best defense versus a scavenger is to kill them and hold them back, they could be buddies of the guys you just killed trying to get their stuff back, or in it for the greed. You're probably best off with having people actually focused on looting enemies until they're full and switch off to prevent them from rearming and flanking you from behind.

Would you still commit a force to kill the scavengers even if it meant possibly loosing the battle with your Enemy Clan?   No.

Just something different to think about for a change.

Edit:

Decided to change the title to the thread, as I was going to originally ask about some Ninja-looting type scenarios... but then went down a related, but different path.

Edit #2:  Added a poll for those that didn't want to have to type in any kind of an answer.

There are a lot of holes in what we can, can't, and can get away with as a murderer or a faction enemy. The fact these people will most likely spawn a decent distance away unless you're on the offensive will pretty much mean that after an engagement you'll have downtime. Looting your enemies and keeping your own loot safe is a major thing in Darkfall. You'll want to travel in packs if you're carrying anything of value. You'll want to avoid being caught in dungeons and bullied by others also. Alliances, non-aggressive pacts, making friends will be a huge part of DFO. The harshness of an open PvP world is never ending and people will always find a way to fuck with someone and get their items. You'll lose said items all the time, it's important to understand that whoever just killed you and looted that item can just as easily be killed 5 minutes down the road and looted.

Not getting attached to your items is the best way to avoid getting angry and wanting to quit the game. It will happen, and it will happen a lot. That is part of a FFA world, the great part is you can come right back and do the same later on. Also if you're planning on playing a non-murderer a good clan/alliance located in a good location would be a good thing to think about as you log into the Darkfall world.

I hope this helped a bit.

Well, i can't tell much about the game since little is actually known about it, except, if you're an rper you're bound to enjoy the community of this game...............................not

There has been a lot of info shared about Darkfall, you just have to look for it lol.

RP will not be uncommon, RPers love sandbox games and I'm sure finding a clan that RPs and controls a player city will not be hard, and it'll be fun since the whole city will be full of RPers as well. There are also a lot of lore play guilds and RP guilds that plan on doing PvP and other stuff too.

Gank teams

One of the favorite AoC gank tactic was to wait in stealth next to a mission npc. When a player started talking to the npc the gank squad would ambush you. As you couldn't exit out of your conversation with the mission npc, you would often be dead before you could even fight back.

How does comparing stealth to an open ffa game with no stealth even relevent?

Yeah ganks will exists, they will kill you and take your shit if you hang outside of towns and high traffic areas, but the darkfall world is huge, you'll be able to find a spot where you can let your guard down a bit. You can also join a guild and hunt in parties.

Someone killing you in town will be hard, every city looks to have walls, and will have players to protect you. Looting a good players corpse as a good player will be considered stealing like in UO(not a fact but I can't see them letting people get gankedi n town and looted by everyone in the area with no punishment, unless you're a murderer obviously or at war).

The gank squads will probably be a big factor for the first couple months but once server politics and the large guilds have started to claim every possible player controlled location it'll be a whole new ball game. Ganks will focus on griefing larger guilds hard work and you'll be able to go off to some corner of the world and do your thing withoutb eing bothered.

Another site is giving away a Darkfall beta key, maybe you guys should see if you can ask if you guys could also do a similar contest.

Well there's only 2 things I can think of that haven't been done before (as far as I know). And I wouldn't really classify either of these as "next-gen"...

1) Friendly fire. I'm very skeptical about this being anything other than a lesson in frustration. This is going to be a problem for both melee and ranged as people are moving around to avoid attacks and jump right in front of their own team. What's worse is as a melee you'll be in first person mode and can't see behind you to know if you're moving in front of friendly fire or not. I dunno, I'm having a hard time seeing this as a positive for the game at all.

2) Full corpse loot. I know other games have had corpse looting but not to this extent. Again I'm having a hard time seeing this as a positive for the game. I'm all for harsh death penalties (you died, it shouldn't be easy), but losing everything every time you die sounds overboard. Will you even carry that ub3r dragon sword that took you 3 months to acquire? How much fun will it be to die 3+ times in a row as a lowbie and have no money left to buy any equipment? It seems like a hard-core idea but the more I think about it I just forsee people breaking ranks and fleeing the fight to avoid death. There's really nothing hard core about that at all.

UO had full player loot and ffa pvp. It's been done before lol.

you wont get proof on these forums, everyone here makes shit up all the time. Then when they claim to have giving out proof they really didn't (mcpoopypantz for example)

I'm going to laugh when DFO comes out and all the old school names we've seen over the years call this game vaporware come here trashing the game without even playing it claiming it has failed.

I'm a fan of Darkfall and eagerly await its release.
However those that point out the worriesome details of Adventurines lack of communication and possibly no open beta... well they have a point.
I hope we dont' get Funcomed.

I know Aventurine will most likely release Darkfall and it will be good, but this man says it best... A lot of us remember AoC and how we all expected that game to be awesome but it failed hard. Warhammer a year ago was a completely different game then what actually hit store shelves. MMOs lately besides WoW have pretty much put out semi complete products it's just unfortunate WoW is just that, WoW.

The more close to Jan 22nd it gets and when NDA is not dropping people will avoid the game like the plague until valid non-biased reviews and people who attempted to try the game even though it was in the dark talk about it will it sell copies or not. With all the trolls that have existed to try and destroy this game's name I can see people pretending to hate it just because they find it funny for some reason.

The NA release being after the UK also might have the potential to let possible NA costumers that wouldn't of got the game on release day to go out and buy it boosting sales also. Just some food for thought.

All I'm saying is, they'll make money to keep the game alive, but I really would like to see Darkfall become successful so more companies steer away from theme park style games and people start to explore all the possibilities of allowing people freedom to do what they want.
