Are you saying that the average consumer, who barely researches a lot of their purchases in-depth before they buy, should have to try and find LEAKED patch notes to base their decision off of? Are you kidding?

Perhaps those of you diehard fans who refuse to acknowledge the shortcomings of this game think it is a requirement, but overall it is going to hurt Zenimax in the end. They pushed out a very publicized beta, and had nothing but negative comments from people giving it a try for the first time. Hell, if you watched the Twitch streams, the chat alone was an indication of the overall disdain for this game.

Some people will like it, most will not. Get used to it. This is not going to be the be-all end-all MMO some of you are touting it to be.

I heard they have something in effect that puts the player who shares a key at risk if the recruited person is a douche. I doubt anyone would risk that.

According to the previews I have seen, mainly Angry Joe's, there isn't much to explore as they said it is, between quests, a pretty empty world. Pretty much like a ThemePark in other word, where the only content worth doing is the quest hubs.

Angry Joe played 9 levels.  I'll repeat:  Angry.  Joe.  Played.  9.  Levels.

Obviously, it would be nice if more games let you just go off and do your own thing as soon as you got out of the tutorial zone, and ESO definitely suffers from this as well.

But Angry Joe, as good as a reviewer as he generally is, isn't really equipped to comment on what you can and can't do in this game if he didn't get past level 9.

He got past level 9, but the NDA stated media couldn't show more than 15 minutes of video or levels at a time - whichever came first.

Why does something feel so sketchy about this post? It's probably just me...

I was fine with this having a sub, but as mentioned earlier there are 'pay exclusives' here too. If it's a sub game then that extra race should be available to everyone because of the sub. Same goes with the faction switching with races. Angry Joe was right about both of those.

You're able to get a refund.

Same, got a refund.

FFXIV 2.0, my favorite experience was simply hanging out in game with the group of friends I made. We could spend hours just relaxing on mumble while having a few drinks and talking for hours, while playing together in game.

You put forth a very compelling argument, OP.

This sucks.  I always hoped they'd eventually have the sense to create AO 2, with all the twinking, kiting, housing, decorating, and yalm exploration I could ever wish for.  Now we'll probably be lucky if the whole thing doesn't shut down on us.

I actually quite like The Secret World, so I'm hoping content doesn't stop coming.

I thought this was interesting, if there's anyone here who plays or has played any of their games before. Hell, it's interesting to any MMO gamer, because I don't think this has happened to a MMO dev company before and I'm curious as to what will happen to their games.

Check it out here

The statement from the Oslo Stock Exchange locks down the period in question: “suspicion of infringement of the provisions of the Securities Trading Act with regards to the financial information given to the market regarding The Secret World from August 2011 until the launch of the game in July 2012 and the two months following the launch”.

They had the start of a nice sandbox that had a stable-ish player base.

Instead of keeping it up to prove to other developers that such a game can work over the long run, they castrated it.  Essentially by doing this they put the genre years behind in developement, since sadly lots of developers are forced to draw too much inspiration from other MMOs.

Then again, the MMO scene was very different back then. It was when everyone saw WoW's success, and figured they had to use the same model.

Luckily, with the numerous amount of WoW-clones failing, it has opened their eyes to the fact that people do not want those types of MMOs. The demand for sandbox games is absolutely huge. Look at all the indie titles (not all are MMORPGs, mind you) that have large sales, and these companies want a part of that.

Hopefully this means good things for the future of MMO development. The money is there waiting to be made, someone just has to come along and make the game.

I'm seeing a lot of GW2 in this thread. I remember everyone talking about it, then suddenly it fell off the radar.

And, they apologized for that and now have instituted the player driven development system. Where a few times a month players vote in-game in guaranteed content polls to direct the course of development for the game.

Wow, that's a dangerous move.

Is there an MMO out there that you spent months looking forward to, only to be completely and utterly disappointed in the final product?

You read up on everything, you learned the lore, you knew what the classes and races were inside and out, hell... you could probably be hired by the company you were so devoted. But in the end, it was all a waste of time, and money.

For me, without a doubt, it was Age of Conan. I remember hearing about the game well in advance. I had done my research and looked up absolutely everything about it. I built an entirely new computer to be able to play the game. The combat system sounded fantastic, and the setting was amazing. I still get nostalgic when I hear some of the soundtrack from the early part of the game.

Tortage was amazing. I played through it slowly to enjoy every part of it. I figured, "finally, found that perfect MMO to hold me for the next few years."

Then I left Tortage. Those of you who've played it, you know the rest.

So, what is your 'disaster' MMO?

by braindead, I assume you dont mean content, but seems like combat you are mentioning mostly

the hardest themepark, without a doubt is TSW.  Talk about thinking while you play.  Use no outside help, build your own character's synergy and the dungeons are extremely well done imo.

if you havent tried it, I would go in that direction.

I second this. I had no idea I would fall in love with the Secret World, but I just picked it up in the last steam sale and it's absolutely amazing. It is not braindead in the least. Its quests aren't always "go kill 5 of this, collect 5 of that, etc." It does have them, but most of the quests require you to complete puzzles, and think outside the box. Hell, some of the quests even require you to use google to find the answer (since the game is set in current times, they said Google would exist in the game world).

Good thing is there's no sub. The cash shop is quite fun too, I've spent a long time just browsing through the different outfits and cosmetic stuff offered in the store finding an hour has passed without me noticing.

Give it a shot, it's on steam. I'm in the same boat as you, OP... I'm sick of all these button-mashing MMOs that require no thinking whatsoever.

Not to mention the bosses in this game are bad ass.

I'm not trying to bash this game. I've simple learned my lesson when it comes to following a game that is years away (2017).

BioWare announced SWTOR in Oct. 2008. I registered a forum account on the very first day and had participated in discussion almost every day until it launched.

It felt like a childhood birthday - sitting on the kitchen chair and waiting for my parents to walk in with my gigantic Duncan Hines chocolate cake! However, instead of my parents walking in while singing / praising my candle-lit bliss, they STOMP OUT HOLDING A GIANT C0CKMEAT SANDWICH.

All of that time... all of that hype... completely wasted because of my own stupidity.

I will follow a game if it is within 6 months of launch.

I believe all of us have experienced that at one point or another regarding a specific MMO. Hell, I experienced it with Age of Conan, Aion, and FFXIV 1.0. I have learned to not let myself get incredibly hyped up, but to at least follow it with some curiosity.

That being said, you're right, 2017 feels far away, but it's always good to have something to look forward to.

edit - I should have looked harder, but I didn't see the other post regarding this game. I'll leave it up anyways, unless a mod feels that it should be deleted. Sorry about that!

I suggest reading the kickstarter instead of this post, as the format is much more appealing. However, I'm copying most of the page here in case some of you are unable to view it (at work, school, etc.)

I'll be taking most of the information from the Kickstarter page. This game, however, is being targeted towards the old-school MMO gamers who miss what it was like to immerse in a world with actual danger, and you had to bring buddies along to progress. Understandably, this type of game isn't for everyone, and they have gone in knowing that.

However, the purpose of the Kickstarter is to determine if the desire for an "old-school, group-based, EQ type" MMO is there. Kickstarter allows them to get funding from gamers who are interested, instead of suits who are pressuring for the game to target a wider audience, diluting the purpose of the game.

I'd like to add, I'm not affiliated with the company behind the game. I am, however, part of the demographic interested in a game like this so I figured I might as well get the word out there to find other like-minded gamers. Hopefully some of you enjoy this type of MMO  as much as I do!

  • An MMO developed by gamers who aren't afraid to target an audience of like-minded gamers.
  • A fantasy themed Massively Multiplayer Role Playing game (MMO) with a heavy focus on character development, an immersive world, and teamwork.
  • An MMO for players wanting a challenging and rewarding experience.
  • An open world in which you explore to obtain not only more powerful items but also new spells and abilities.
  • Travel where and when you want to in a non-linear world.
  • A huge world to explore, trade, and adventure in.
  • A complex back-story that players may gradually discover as they grow in power and explore the world.
  • A constantly expanding and evolving world.
  • Group-focused social gameplay using a class based system to encourage teamwork.
  • Customize your class by bonding with the spirits of fallen warriors.
  • Reactive combat where you can determine what the NPC is doing and react to it. (move, counter, deflect, etc.) .
  • Combat will be challenging and involved -- your decisions will matter and directly affect the battle's outcome.
  • Travel the world and profit from selling exotic items collected from distant realms. Different cities and outposts may have local Bazaars.
  • Limited and class based teleportation may get you close, but in order to reach many destinations you will have to traverse the planar scarred lands of Terminus through the use of your own two feet or on the back of your mighty steed.
  • Earning experience is only part of what it takes to level up. Exploring the world you will gain knowledge and power allowing you to overcome more powerful enemies.
  • The game will run on PC, Mac, and possibly other platforms in the future.
  • An awareness that content is king
  • A belief that game economies should be predicated on delaying and minimizing item value deflation
  • A commitment to a style of play that focuses on immersive combat, and engaging group mechanics.
  • An understanding that a truly challenging game is truly rewarding
  • An expectation that the path of least resistance should also be the most entertaining
  • A mindset that Designed Downtime should be a part of the game to ensure players have time to form important social bonds.
  • A belief that an immersive world requires intelligent inhabitants
  • An understanding that faction should be an integral part of interacting with the world and its citizenry.
  • A commitment to creating a world where a focus on group play will attract those seeking a challenge
  • A belief that the greatest sense of accomplishment comes when it is shared

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen is a group-focused MMORPG based on challenging gameplay and open world high fantasy. It takes place on a world populated by deities and heroes, called Terminus. Mortal and planar shards which have collided create the dramatic and epic environment of Terminus. With some of those shards came deities and demigods that, over time, raised empires which forged the turbulent political landscape. Centuries later, new planar collisions have occurred that will pull the players into the world and its politics. The player is a legendary hero, stripped of his or her powerful relics and left to explore the dramatically diverse and epic regions of Terminus with hopes of reclaiming their relics and those of lost heroes.

Pantheon’s combat places a focus on preparation and awareness of the enemy. The player can actively dodge, block, or deflect attacks. Spell and ability pre-selection is critical to defeat encounters, as is forging alliances with other players. You won't want to be caught in the wilds of Terminus alone, but exploration of the vast and dramatically diverse world landscapes will be richly rewarding. Through exploration the player can uncover mysteries and unique adventures as well as acquire rare and exotic spells and abilities from dungeons and challenging encounters.

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen is an intensely social game for the determined thrill-seeker, because we believe that the greatest sense of accomplishment comes when it is shared.  Imagine a vast, detailed world of swords and sorcery, of dragons and knights, of fiery swords and chests overflowing with treasure. A world in which a myriad of sentient races and creatures live and affect change.

There's a lot more on the kickstarter, so check it out when you can. Here's a few videos as well:

This isn't a LFGame post.

After playing TESO beta for a bit, I realized that despite its shortcomings, I absolutely love the fact that there is a massive story behind everything. It made me realize just how much I value lore and story, even though I'm not even slightly interested in RPing.

I'm aware that due to the size of an MMO and the fact that they are ever expanding, a game may retcon some lore after time, but it doesn't bother me as much as a game that doesn't put any effort into the story at all. And there are quite a few MMOs that throw together a game with great PVP and acceptable PVE, only to have a thin layer of storytelling draped over it as an afterthought.

So, I ask, what MMOs in your opinion have the most intricate story and lore?

One of the biggest complaints I've heard is that combat doesn't feel satisfying. Apparently, there aren't animations indicating when a weapon strikes an enemy, or deflects a blow, etc. Your character swings through things because there's no collision hit boxes and feels "floaty".

Does anyone have any knowledge on this?

the game is still in beta and 6 months or so away from launch.  if what you described is the case,  then there is still time to improve it.

And there it is.

The "it's still in beta" excuse. That's all I needed to know about this game, thanks.

In most cases, you're right. However, I read that they completely revamped the "no-first person" idea after the backlash. Perhaps there's a chance for this?
