I leave for a day and look what happens

Well it's official for "inside of 2008" based on the word of Tasos. Not that his word holds much weight but if it DOESN'T happen , it will be there in writing and it will also be the final nail in the coffin of Darkfall Online.

Another missed Beta and release this game cannot afford.

2008 is the last stand of Darkfall Online.

So it has been officially stated that Darkfall will become commercially available inside of 2008.

Don't forget the dev log, everything is pending an official announcement.  All the fanbois can always fall back on us and say, well, no official announcement came so the dev in the dev journal was still right.  No matter what, we are wrong.

Many of you are asking for a video. We hear you, and we're on it as soon as we can. There were also many questions on the public beta and release dates. To this I can say now, that during a planning meeting we determined that our launch date will be inside 2008, with the public beta preceding it by a few weeks. This is official and internally we're a lot more specific

Can't get anymore official than that. The fanboys will not have any excuses.

Notice how they didn't give an actual month for the launch??

Notice how hey didn't give an actual month for Beta to begin??

If you are actually launching a game in 6 months and have a full featured MMORPG (as they say)  then you would at least know exactly when you were having a Beta considering they've also said they could hold a Beta tomorrow if they wanted to..

Wow, _Pix_ it looks like you got awarded a little compensation at least. Let's all hope you get alot more when the other case is done.

Symbol British Pound Exchange
Rate
U.S. Dollar Bid Ask
GBPUSD=X 50000 Mar 26 2.0030 100,150.4183

Over 100k U.S. dollars, and not even at the real rewards when the main case is decided.

_Pix_, I think we're gonna let you throw the party.

Just because a court awarded someone money doesn't mean they're ever going to see it.  All Farlan has to do is file for bankruptcy and pix will never see a red cent.

This is not a criminal trial. Farlan cannot be punished by jail time for not paying.  They will never pay him a penny.  The most that could be done is the siezure of Farlan assets worth 100k but even that is a long drawn out process and they probably don't even have anything under the company worth anything anymore.

On a side note though -- Why is Dark and Light still listed here?  I mean how much proof do you need that these guys a crooks...  They rebilled cancelled accounts so many times that they probably doubled what they made off the original orders just through rebilling peoples cancelled memberships  lol

If they don't make the 2008 release date they won't be competing against anything anymore.

For that to work you need a massive amount of items and variety.

I personally don't think DF can work as P2P at this point anymore. Maybe if it's like $9 month or something and is actually half way decent to play.

B)WoW/Guildwars

Relies on instances for PvP with little to no large scale PvP happening. Meaning a little lag but pvp always in same areas with fixed amount of enemies/allies.

...the best?

if you picked A, AoC is for you, if you picked B, WAR is for you.

The end.

I like AC1

If it's feature complete and ready to come out within 7 months?

Would you want to publish a game that has a reputation like Darkfall? At the end of the day people are not going to want to waste millions publishing a game that most people have already written off as vapourware or a failure waiting to happen.

It is to big of a risk, they have no choice but to self publish because any publisher with business sense would not risk investing in Aventurine. The most that could happen is that a small start up publisher helps them, but if they supposedly have money then they might as well do it them self.

edit: btw supposedly they are publishing themselves in just a few regions which implies they do have publishers for other regions.

Self publishing for Aventurine means Direct 2 Download. You can't do Direct 2 Download in "specific regions".  That's a world wide thing since anyone can download it from anywhere... Unless they start IP banning specific countries.

I hear this 'balancing' issue come up every time people debate class vs. skill systems and it's a load of rubbish. In a good skill based system there is no balancing required as long as every attack skill has an equivalent counter skill. For example any melee attack can be countered by a shield block, a perry, a riposte or even a well timed dodge. In this way all balancing is done by the individual player and not the developer. This makes skill based systems way easier on the developer than class based systems that require constant tweaks to keep the classes balanced and fair. If you end up with a poorly balanced character in a skill based game it's your own fault and not the fault of the developer or the game.

Bren

Developers don't want that situation. See, they want to keep people around paying money and your blame it on the player approach loses business as customers walk. Not a smart idea from a devs point of view.

That's not entirely true. If you try to drive a golf cart on a highway: who's fault is it? The golf cart maker or the idiot that thought a golf cart could go at least 55MPH? Maybe this analogy is too weak to use, but I think utility or intention versus assumption by customer(s) is what is the problem. Developers of games need to lay down the utility/intention of a game mechanic before even coding. Such ideas are not alien and often are found in other developments such as in the IT field (especially when cobbling together a system for a customer). A customer that takes a shrink-wrapped product like a game has to understand there are limitations set by the developer, and not by the player. The less limitations by the developer implies the more freedom for the player, especially to *bleep* up. If a player comes to a sandbox game thinking, "Gee, this will be a cake walk", then they *do* have it coming to them with no excuses. If that means some customers walk, I think that's acceptable: not everyone is fulfilled by the same product or service, otherwise there would only be one car manufacturer, one CPU manufacturer (for PCs, mainframes, *and* mobile devices), and one maker of any product or provider of any service. So, your assumption that everyone would walk away from such a game is silly at best, and your assumption that a customer's intent must match the developer's intent is equally silly.

-- Brede

Asheron's call 1 had like 4 or 5 server worlds and at prime time they were all at around 1,500-2,000 people on. No one was walking away from it. They loved it. Turbine were complete fools for not making a true sequel to AC1. Instead they made some half assed EQ1 clone and stamped AC2 on it.

Because if they showed videos of of of the things they claim are in the game, it would generate tons and tons of free publicity, and generate tons of interest in the game.

The the only logical reason they aren't doing this is because those featurea aren't in the game yet, or they aren't working.

did it ever occur to you that maybe they don't *want* too much publicity about their game while it was still in hardcore development mode?

So you're saying they only want a "little" publicitiy?

There is no in between. Either you want publicity or you don't. They have a public website up , they have public forums , they do bi-weekly Q&A's at Warcry.

Do you know why?  Because they want publicity.

No one wanted to publish Dark and Light either forcing them to self publish.

I wonder why?

I think skill needs to be more diversified with more varieties which means more flexbility, once you chosen your race with racial traits then you can learn all type of skills you want. But if you want to be more specialized then you need to join a guild in the game such as rogue guild or mage guild and then the guild are not allow you to learn the other skill or you have not enough skill points or feat to join the guild whatsoever.

That's not a skill based game. That's a class based hybrid type. You should always be able to learn any skills you want with the skills that have the most EXP in them being your best skills and defining your character.
