Having both perma death and full loot in a game seems pointless to be honest. As most have said for perma death to work you need to tailor a game for it, and that means no items so hard/costly/time consuming to get that loosing it would be out of the question. Meaning that whatver you have on you is pretty useless and have no real value, no point in letting people loot you when no one will ever bother to do it. And tailoring an entire game to fit one single feature, allthough possible, seems like a bad idea as well. It can not possibly be that an important, or fun, feature to warrant putting aside all other concerns just to be able to fit this one thing into the game world. |

Well it has grind in spades thats for sure, especially since they lowered the XP bonus for prolonged figthing, wich was the biggest innovation with the game. You used to have x2-x6 times XP as bonus the longer you could stay in figth and keep figthing, I kept X6 up for over 40 minutes at one point, admittedly I gained a LOT of xp in that time, perhaps to much, but nerfing it to a factor of 3 was not the way to go. I have not played much since wipe, mostly due to this fact. It was grind yes, but it was fun, if you went over 10 seconds without attacking anything you bonus would reset and you had to start over, meaning that once you had that X6 you tried hard and you focused to keep it, time just passed at an incredible rate, wich is more or less what these games are about. I only reached lvl 28 though and I am not sure I could have taken that pace much more. Its a bit like the the asian f2p games, its fun to log in for 30 mins or an hour now and then and just kill some time, but they are all shallow as a puddle. Kinda like reading a comic instead of a book, comics are great to kill some time and if you do not want to commit, but eventually you will want the depth from a good book. |

The most fun I have had at my computer sine "the incredible machine". Just wait until they releas the SDK for it, you can still use the HL2 editor to build portal maps but once we have the full thing I doubt we will ever run out of maps to play, hopefully some of them will be good. Seeing as svencoop has dropped coop for HL2 I am not sure who could make a nice mp mod for this but the possibilites with such maps are endless, imagine the puzzles one could make were 3 or 4 people have to cooperate to traverse the map. I am probably going to be all over the editor when it hits, if it hasnt allready, havent checked, just know it was not with the install. Damn I havent made hl maps since forever and then it was for svencoop, I am gonna have some fun with this. |

On another note I have found myself heavily censoring myself these days, just to stay in line. But thats like taking the fu out of fun... |

For 1500 you can build a bleeding edge computer that can handle just about everything. For 1000 you can build a computer that plays pretty much everything satisfactory. I do not know the american market, but there is a lot of people here who do, even work within it. Tell you what, if you put a maximum price I am sure there are people here who will help you shop for parts that will make that 2250 dollar alien look like a pocket calculator. Try newegg, a lot of the US people seem to favor it.

I mean any feature you can imagine, it has it, the sky is the limit. If it had EVERYTHING you ever dreamed about in a MMO, and then some, what kind of monthly would you accept? Something like the legend servers of EQ with unprecedented support, storylines and events unfold daily, ( not that it had all that ). Many of us old PNP and computer gamers are at a point in our lifes when money is not so much of an issue but rather the time to indulge ourselfs is the hard currency. Personally I want to cram as much fun out of every single second I have to spare as I can. The timesink mentality of most MMO's just do not hook me as time is the one thing I do not got. Remember your old PNP seesions were entertainment was virtully guaranteed and so was good company, it took like one nigth out of every week, or month, but it was memorable and fun. I have not had that feeling in an MMO since the early days of anarchy online, the immersion, the amazement the "holy crap" factor. I am in MMO limbo and to be honest I do not see myself coming out of it anytime soon and I have tried everything from the crappiest asian grindfests to the supposedly "next thing", nothing can keep me in. I can not even play single player games anymore because they seem barren in comparison to online games, crappy as they might be. Thing is I do not have a vision, barely a dream, all I want is that immersion feeling that there is a great story going on, and I am part of it. If it met all my esoteric criteria, of wich I do not even know half of them I do not see the price being an issue, within reason, I would not pay 500$ a month for a computer game. I am sure at least some of you know were I am coming from, and feel my frustration. There is so much promise and possibilities with this technology and all that is out there is generic clones of each other. Asherons call with its monthly storyline patches was pretty damn near perfect, I miss them days as well. Forget it, I am rambling, I am somewhat drunk but above all I am sentimental and nostalgic. Were have all the good times gone? Be well all. Tomorrow I will be in hell, well deserved.

I am not going to attempt an explanation even though I think I know the answer. I will however give you a good tip. There is a lecture series from caltech done in the eigthties with a Professor Goldstein called "The mechanical universe" and a follow up called "The mechanical universe and beyond. It is in 52 half hour videos, somewhat dramatized that I can higly recomend to anyone at all interested in what makes the world tick, highly educational and allthough a bit old and perhaps lacking in effects very well done. I would link it to you but I do not hink I am allowed here, as it is a torrent of something I assume is copyrigthed. It does explain pretty much everything from newtonian physics to electro dynamics and beyond, not so much quantum physics. Your answer is there.. ;) |

Fairly similar to my system. Whats different from yours is I have Gigabyte ds4 965p MB 6400 CPU Same G card but leadtek instead. 3x500 HD's but WD as well, just recently moved from samsung to WD as several of my Samsung disks died. The exact same PSU, and it bloody rocks, can easily handle 2 of my G cards ( only have one now, but getting one more later ). There is no game that I have come across that will not play very well on highest possible settings, even vanguard. And I have had no problems what so ever. Well I built the rig with a chieftec 620 PSU but the fan died on nigth, the overheating safety failed and it went bad from there. Chieftec and ASUS are two brands I do not touch anymore ( the ASUS story is old, but so am I and I am unlikely to change my opinion of them )

Environmental issues are important, I doubt anyone who lives in large a motorized city can refute that. I am not sure it is the most important issue we have, but it is certainly up there at the top. It is hard to prophecy about the future but this guy gives an compelling argument. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zORv8wwiadQ In essence, global warming migth ( human effected that is, global warming is a reality, it all goes in cycles, qeustion is if it is our faulth ) not be true but what are the consequences of any decision we make? We can do all we can to stop it and if we are wrong we have put a LOT of resources into the issue, some claim this will hurt the global economy, some claim it will help it. I am fairly sure that any efforts going into alternatives energy sources is a good thing regardless of environmental issues or not, this debate will fuel that research. And there is another issure here, what rigth do our generation have to within a hundred years use up 500 million years of accumulated solar energy? Wich is essentially what fossil fuel is. We can do nothing and it turns out this is the wrong thing to do, wich essentially means the end of the world as we know it, not my choice to be honest. We can do what we can but it will not help, again we have the end of the world scenario but at least we tried, and perhaps we made enough difference t lessen the effects. We can do all we can and be successful and in my book that is time and effort well invested. What amazes me is the americans reluctance to this, because say what you will about the US but they have the resources to lead this research, the results of wich could possibly be the most profitable market in the history of bussiness. At the end of the day I do not think we should panic but I think we should have a healthy respect for the possibility that we are destroying ourself.

I tend to agree with Uncus. Had it not been for instancing MMO's would still have been a 1 million customers market. MMO's is about progression, if only people with insane amounts of free time can progress then I am fairly sure they will be all but alone in any given gameworld. I like AO's system as well, they were first with instancing but they did it subtly. I like eq2's system also, with both contested and instanced raid bosses, as well as quest mobs. Free time is still the most important factor on how well you will do in pretty much any given MMO, I am hoping for another system as well but until then lets not kill of the whole genre? To generalise, and I am sorry if I insult anyone with this but. Seeing as I work full days, pay my taxes and support my family should NOT mean I do less well in any given game then the people I probably support with said tax who spends all day infront of their computer. I suppose there is some twisted irony in that, but I am not laughing. Now, if someone were indeed to come up with a good solution to the camping VS instance problem then I would be all ears because I do think it takes away some of the immersion, but it is small price to pay to be allowed to play at all and still progress.

Hey, nice to see I am not the only Zelazny fan here. Yes, the amber novels is probably the best book series I know of. I played the PNP RPG for a long time, allthough it has been a couple of years since the last time. I usually use names from the books in most MMO's, Dworkin, Suhuy, Borel and if there is a last name I usually pick Barimen, wich was Dworkins last name. This is one of few book series that I would really like to own a first edition.

Ghosting, or ghost files are remnants of deleted files. ( ghosting is actually something else as well, but I will leave that for now ). When you delete something on your computer it does not actually remove that file, it just removes the flags for it. Kinda like taking down road signs, the town is still there, but it is hard to find.. hehe. There are programs that will completely remove files, and there are programs that will turn every unused bit into a 1 or 0 ( all 1's or all 0's ), completely destroying any ghost files. |

This is one of the most important factors for me. Even though I hope to never need it, should I though I demand it to be top notch. Not only that, good CS shows that the company cares about their customers, that they are in it for the long run and they are willing to rigth wrongs. In EQ2 I once got "blackholed", meaning my character was lost in limbo, I was in constant contact with the server GM for two days until he fixed it, without CS that character would have been lost forever. When new to EVE I lost a ship due to a server crash, this was reimbursed, had this not been so I would probably have left. I worked in the ARK program for Anarchy Online when it launched, ( and those who remember that launch migth be able to imagine how that was like ). And not counting in game issues there are things like billing, this just has to be done well for obvious reasons. Quite frankly, customer service makes or breaks a company, why should these company be any different? Looking at the technical issues in most recent and past releases this bussiness need it more then most others. Realising this does not require a college degree in economics, I doubt it even requires a high school diploma. And yet amazingly, there seem to be people who do not get this. |
