If I may try to get this thread a little more back on topic, not that the previous posts have not been interesting.

But what I really wanted to ask was.

What kind of science do you get for 800 billion?

You are rigth in many ways but there is time and there are "fun times".

I dont much mind grinding, I can even take camping to a degree but less today then before, I remember I spent nearly 24 hours cmping the bloody fish in enchanted lands in EQ2 for my heritage quest and allthough not fun per say I met a lot of people during them 24 hours.

I spent 27 hours grinding Stanley Adams in AO and allthough we did almost EXACTLY the same thing for all that time I had a blast, we were 6 people who started and 3 of us were left when it ended but during that time I bet the other 3 spots were filled with something like 20 people coming and going.

I despise travelling times though, it such an artificial time filler from the creators it is sickening.

Dont get me wrong, in AO I probably spent well over 300 hours doing NOTHING but exploring the world of Rubi-Ka, every nook and cranny and I took pride in my knowledge of the world wich were probably second to none.

But I did that because I wanted to, not because I had to.

"Considerable effort" is NOT waiting doing nothing, having time is NOT a skill, more likely it is evidence of the opposite.

Delay the reward all you want, but fill the time in between with something to do and I am all ok.

Force me to wait doing nothing, or mindless travel and I am very likely to not go back.

As another example, it took me me 4 months in the last diablo2 ladder to get my first high rune to make a "fortitude" runeword.

The number of pindle/shenk runs I did is probably in the thousands, but I had fun almost the entire time, and anyone who knows can tell you how repetetive that is.

Just my thougts.

Some things I have been thinking about.

The iraq war has cost the US what?

800 Billion or so?

It is primarily a war for oil control, ( honestly, does anyone believe anything else? )

Now put 800 billion DOLLAR into alternative fuel research, or other forms of energy, fusion, battery cells and so and so forth.

Not only would this have made the US auto industry again the dominant industry on this planet.

It would also have made the US impervious ( sp? ) to any other country in terms of energy.

The need to bomb the hell out the rest of the world would have been gone as they would no longer need to meddle in the affairs of others and the hatred for them would subside.

Obviously there is no gaurantee 800 billion would solve anything, but lets face it, the US still have some of the best research facilites on the planet, along with some of the best scientists, given such an insane amount I bet you this problem would be solved.

Instead the money was spent to kill literally hundred of thousands, for what?

To keep the status quo?

To be honest this kind of ticks me of.

And at the same time it is fortunate for the rest of us in a way, because the US would again own the world and climb up from its current 3rd world country status.

Does this not piss of at least some of the americans?

It just feels like such a waste.

There are things that make us human, it does not neccesarily mean we are empathic, generous and all around nice people, but there are lines in the sand wich you do not cross.

Doing so should rigthfully make the rest of us able to bar you from the rigths that comes from being part of our specie.

Declare creatures like that as animals, and threat them as such.

Be it dog food, medical research, weapon testing or whatever.

We allready do that to the animals who has done us no wrong, why not do it to the animals who actually have?

Anyways, fanbois defend things, say it's great, awsome, in the end their possible ignorance doesnt cause damage, doesnt hurt people, doesnt make your friends feel disgusted (usually)

Trolls attack things, say it's awful, horrible, in the end their possible ignorance causes damage, hurts people, and makes your friends feel disgusted (if you take the attitude to the real world, which oddly fits very close with an Extreme Activist)

Trolls are the worst.

If there were no trolls, and only fanbois, the worst that would happen in forums is people would say 'ugh another "praise this game" person' or 'loser'

If there were no fanbois, and only trolls, the worst that would happen in forums is people stop posting besides the trolls, because trolls will call a person out directly, make a thread about an off-topic discussion, generally more-likely to use false facts, oh, and the yelling, lots and lots of yelling, swearing, name-calling.

Even while both are mixed though, trolls still prevail as the worst.

Not really true if you think about it.

Trolls might annoy you.

But fanboys migth actually cost you money if you believe them.

They are rarely hard to spot, but not everyone spend as much time on forums as some of us and might not have the experience to see trough it.

As a somewhat long term player of these games, and more importantly a player of Anarchy Online when it launched, not to mention a whole LOT of MMO's in between I really must say this.

I should mention that upon this writing I have had a couple of whiskeys, Longmorn is my brand of the moment so please do not trash me for grammar?

English is not even my native language.

Back on topic now, and when it omes to funcom I have a sour taste in my mouth because I was there when AO launched, in fact I was even in the ARK program by then, ( the volunteer GM system ).

There is no describing the anticipation I had for this game, we had a guild site out fairly early and because of that we got an early beta invite, so I/we played it long before it got released.

And it worked by then.

To be honest AO beta is still the most extatic and fun MMO experience I have ever had.

There were bugs a plenty and all that but it did not really matter, I could play and I had fun.

Then came release!

Anyone who was there know what that was like, there is no need to elaborate.

In some way it killed me inside, the anticipation I felt for AO were intense, the letdown equally so.

Now they polished the game up and I still consider the game one of the best on the market, but!

When AOC was announced I did not even lift an eyebrow, I did of course apply for beta and all that but to be honest I expected nothing.

And this is key, not only for AOC but for all other games.

See when AOC released it was far from perfect, it still is not, but it has however exceeded my expectations so for some reason I am not all that upset for its shortcomings.

So in the end, my advice as someone who has played and beta tested pretty much every title released after Asherons Call, let me give you an advice.

It is unlikely that any game can live up to your expectations, regardless.

I have said this before here but I will say it again, to anyone willing to listen.

It is far more satisfying to be pleasantly surprised then the opposite.

This do not only go for any game you may encounter, but for life in general.

I much rather think the glass is half empty and find it full then think it is full and find it half empty.

Yours

It feels weird though that funcom has gone from the absolutely best inventory system in this entire genre, Anarchy Online, to without a doubt the worst one I have yet to see.

Money is in extremely short supply, buying a horse at 40 is all but impossible.

Crafting, wich also starts at 40 is very expensive and do not seem to yield any reward.

I still have not figured out the stats on items, the description has improved a lot since beta but still going naked or fully kitted out in blue, wich I am, seem to not make any difference.

+Hp and +Mana is the only useful stats it seem.

But the armors do look awesome, sanctum drops, both armor and weapons do look unique with 3D reliefs and whatnot.

I have yet to see purple drop though.

No, high tax does not destroy capital.

Capital can not be destroyed that easily.

What high tax does is that it distributes the cash to people who are likely to actually SPEND it rather then collect it in a big friggin heap.

How this is bad for anyone, big income or low income, I can not see.

Actually, money unspent is money destroyed, because it does not circulate.

Any economy will benefit more from 100 people with one million each then with one person with 100 million.

I would REALLY like someone to counter argument that.

/edit

Oh and on topic.

How this can even be an argument I do not understand, any politician in sweden, or most other EU countries who would argue that you are FORBIDDEN to have an abortion would in an instant destroy their career.

Hello!!!

Were the friggin hell do people live? The 18th Century?

Because creationism is not the theory that is being pushed on schools, it's intelligent design, they are very VERY different things, and I wish that people like you would see that.  Why evolution over the others?  Because it uses the "scientific method" ?   Secular science, is not science...only science is science.  To search for answers based on the presupposition that God does not exist and we must therefore find answers based around the principal that everything had to have happened naturally is to ignore the scientific method anyway, because you go into things with a preexisting disposition and your findings will therefore be flawed.  Science should be the search for answers based upon observable evidence, not the search for answers based upon observable evidence and a need for all explanations to be naturalistic.  That in and of itself is a type of theology, it's called atheism.

Just had to reply to this, sorry Drae.

But what you say is EXACTLY why most people do not buy the ID thing.

Because it is the search for proof that the world and all of us were created, no other answer will do.

If it does not include a "creator" it will NOT fit in to ID, or science or whatever for that matter.

I can accept religion, reluctantly, but we are all free people and each to his own.

Faith is faith and we all have diffrent ones, if we have any at all.

But trying to pawn God as a science I am sure is not only blasphemous ( sp ) to most religious people but not really all that scientific to the people who makes science their life.

As I have said before, ID is the quest for trying to find that we were "created", no matter what.

And allthough I agree that science is much about finding out that we were not, most anyone have to agree that as far as evidence goes, (and by evidence I mean evidence, not lack thereof, thats conjecture ), the science people leads this battle to a degree that is not even debatable.

You say "only science is scince", but I know you well enough to know that you are intelligent enough to know that this does not really apply to ID.

I just wish you yourself would realise that fact.

Not the fact that this is that or vice versa, but that you are indeed smart enough to see the difference.

Yes, only science is science.

But as I am sure you would agree science is about accepting the outcome of your research, no matter what.

Can you honestly say that ID would do that if they for some reason, allthough they most certainly were not looking for it, found out that we were NOT in fact created?

Honestly?

Now, I personally believe that it isn't they are getting dumber, (since IQ test scores keep rising) but that they are not required to KNOW information anymore, just know where to FIND it. This still doesn't change that a repercussion of this is that people want instant gratification NOW, and don't want to wait for it. You can find some studies on that too... (people who delay gratification typically wind up being managers and "higher" up in society) Todays market consists, predominantly, of people who are unable or unwilling to delay gratification and want things easy.

The market, however, isn't here to teach these people to be better, it is merely here to sell a product. So they must adapt their products to the people with the money, which would be the current "dumber" generations.

Yes it is sad, I too have come to enjoy open PvP, banks in different areas, and long open worlds that make it hard to travel across...

This is very well said, people tend to be smarter, but not wiser, smart is one thing and so is a huge IQ but if you have no inherent knowledge to make anything with that brains you are nothing more then a moron.

Kind of like Rain man, to a degree.

Just recently read an article in one of my science magazines that our memory is NOT there for us to remember the past, but to predict the future.

I like to hink that there is no trivial information, knowledge is never a heavy thing to carry and it is the one thing that no one can ever take away from you, ( well they can, but not without actually destroying you in the process ).

A bit of topic, sorry, but it was very good post and I had to reply to it.

Sad news indeed.

What is ever more sad, for me at least, is that when I read the topic I was thinking "Erick Wujcik, I remember that name, but from were?"

Then it dawned on me.

And I felt ashamed, because I used to be, and still is to a degree, a HUGE amber DRPG fan.

The work of Roger Zelazny is still one of my most common "returning reads" and I was signed up for the amber mailing list for a very long time as well as played the amber mud for, well a not so long time, but I did enjoy it.

To this day, from the begining of my MMO experience most of my characters have taken their names from the amber universe, Dworkin, Borel, Suhuy, Corwin and just now my AOC character got the name Fiona, but for females I used to go with Llewella, ( mostly because it was never taken ).

I used to run an extensive amber campaign and my very first website, back in 1995, was dedicated to Amber, ( that and GIF animations, because lets face it those were COOL back then ).

So I am going to dig up my old amber PnP books, ( of wich there were really only two ), and see if I can whip up the old gang after all these years and get a small campaing going in his Erick's honor.

Rest in peace Erick, have fun were ever you are going, and give Gary my best regards, I bet you two have something to talk about.

Allthough your two games were as different as two games can be.

Yours

Umbrood

If you give any kind of reward for people figthing people then the system will be exploited.

The game in itself can not give you stuff for PvP, what you gain must be taken away from your opponent in some way.

Otherwise you will have farmers running crazy with the PvP system.

I am unhappy with my CE buy, wich gave me nothing really, the art book is nice and all but not worth the extra cash.

Allthough I always buy CE, and probably will continue to do so, but this rates very low on the "fluff" scale.

I am not unhappy with AOC though.

I figure the standard edition is worth it for the tortage storyline, wich is about 20-30 hours if you drag it out.

Wich is what many offline RPG's offer today.

But, however much fun I found Tortage the first time around, ( well the first time in beta and the first time in final ), the 5th or 6th and beyond is pure fucking Torture, so the city is well named at least.

My first encounter with ironman was with diablo, who i think inventend the concept.

It was fun with diablo2 as well, and remember ironman was not just about permadeath but about only using items you and your group got hold of.

D1 took like 10 hours to complete, 20 in ironman mode.

D2 took about the same.

Most of todays MMO's have 300+ hours of content before max level.

No one want to risk that!
