Their videos would translate into a car with a frame , an untested engine , and no tires...

No matter how good a game is, I don't know if it's possible to capture that sense of amazement you felt when you entered your first MMO and saw for the first time some of the astounding creatures that populated that world.  Even if the graphics weren't that great, it was still something new and different that took you by surprise.

I've mentioned several times that I started with EQ, which had very advanced graphics when it was released, but are bland by today's standards.  Yet, I'll never forget the first time I saw a hill giant in the Commonlands.  The thing towered above all the players who crossed its path.  Fortunately I saw it from a distance and was well out of its range.  It was pounding on some poor soul didn't even see it coming.  Another time, also in the Commonlands, I had joined a group and none of us except the group leader had seen a griffin in the game before.  The group leader asked us if we wanted to go see one.  Everyone eagerly said "yes".  So he took us over to an area where they spawned and saw one flying over a hill.  I just gasped in awe.

Now that I've become desensitized to those images, it's very difficult to have any other game make you feel that way again.  But I'm not prepared to say that it's impossible.  My brother who was also an EQ veteran said that he was blown away the first time he saw a dragon in WoW.  There's also other areas of the game besides graphics, like new ideas for fighting, that can make future games even more fun.  That's why I haven't given up hope yet that there may still be a future game that is as good or maybe even better than the first.  Even though it won't be the same.

EQ1 blew compared to AC1 man

Yes when they specifically ask me to do it

I think there needs to be some kind of quality control as to what gets listed and supported here...  I mean you have games like Atriarch for example that is never going to see the light of day.. What's the point of it being here? It's not like people can discuss a game that they will eventually get to play.....

They could have those type of games "listed". But there shouldn't be any kind of forums or reporting on tem unless they enter a phase of development where it's really clear that they are coming out..

Darkfall has yet to even begin to approach a phase like that after 7 years.

No Diablo could just be World of Warcraft in a Diablo skin / theme / setting.. with more focus on in-depth dungeons and stuff like that...  maybe even an entire "underworld".

Than maybe that should be changed?  Change is always good.

No, I'm not talking about diverting away from High Elves and making more steam punk games.  I'm not even referring to not "dumbing things down".  I'm referring to how MMO companies conduct themselves when developing and releasing their products.........read on before you make any judgements on what my post is about:

I've been giving this some thought off and on for some time now.  Because of the nature of the industry, a lot is constantly in flux when developing, releasing and even maintaining an MMO in today's market.

There are now a varierty of big players in the MMO development industry (e.g. SOE, Funcom, Blizzard, Turbine, Codemasters, etc, etc) .  Some are publishers, some are developers, some are both.

Maybe the time has come for them to agree on certain internationally recognised levels of quality (and I'm not just referring to graphics here) which MMO products should aspire to in order to be awarded an internationally recognised "standard" (e.g. like an ISO standard).

I'm not talking about something which can be enforced by law, just a standard which MMO companies can brandish both on their products and on their literature when their product achieves a certain level of quality.

To some degree one could argue that reviews and previews of games achieve that goal.  But such articles are based on the writer's own opinions and not on a preset list of quality checks.  Such a "standard" could assure that the product meets those quality requirements.  Maybe the standard could have varying levels?

Such as:

  • Does the product play acceptably well on a certain specifications of machine?  Maybe have varying specifications for varying levels of "standard"?
  • Quality in advertising - are the adverts accurate, do they imply too much and not actually deliver?).
  • Are the MMO companies partners acting in fair interest of both the public and the MMO development company? Maybe partner companies (e.g. online advertising companies) get their own "standard" and levels of quality to aspire to?

These are just a couple of aspects which could be used to consider if a company's MMO product achieves a certain level of quality.  Whats everyones thoughts on this?

Why would these even matter?  Are you proposing some kind of MMO quality assurance law?  That would never happen.

I'am surprised Blizzard isn't already making this...

1 . WoW

2. SC Online

3. Diablo Online

Package them all up in a one membership package and Blizzard would rule the world forever.

Personally I am not bothered to much what it is, I heard the lead designer do a speech on the game ( as in what they wanted to do with an mmo) it honestly sounded like he wanted to make a WoW clone with more emphasis on story lines.

Hopefully I just misinterpreted it but I can't really think of a game Bioware has made that has not been mediocre in the gameplay department but great in the story telling department. So it does sound like the kind of thing the company would do.

I bet you anything it's going to be another medieval fantasy style..  Considering that's really all that Bioware makes..

Asheron's Call 1 was my first and nothing compared to it ever since... doubt anything ever will. I played it daily for 3 straight years.

Way too many memories in that game...

I feel that anything that Tasos tells us about Darkfall is great because he owns the community nothing,

You put up public forums , to build a community , and tell people to go out and "spread the word" about your product , than you owe something.

Unless taking and giving nothing in return is all they are good for?

No I would do it in advance before I leave.. again complete lack of commen sense.

It seems to be the foundation of what Darkfall Online is built upon. Not only do it's developers show it , but most of it's fanbase has it too... it's like a disease over there or something.

maybe just prove all the "AoC fanboys" that darkfall isnt vaporware

ow wait,, u cant

um you prove that DF is vaporware

ow wait,,u cant

Only those claiming they have something tangible are required to prove it.

Lets take another example.  You tell me you have an invisible airplane.  I dont have to prove the invisible airplane doesnt exist - you are the one that has to convince me it does.  If you cant, or wont, it is reasonable to claim BS.

LOL says who ? Is that like a law of nature ?

It's a law of commen sense. Something that most who still folow DF seem to be heavily lacking.

Ya sure but that wouldn't stop me from writing a 30 minute dev journal.

100% bullshit excuses is all this is like usual.

Don't ypu people GET IT?  They don't give a shit about this project. It's so obvious that it's just staring you in the face.

If they really did than they would hire (or even volunteer) someone to do these VERY simple PR things...

World of Warcraft Open Beta client still works as the original game does from CD's..

In fact many people did not even buy the retail box of WoW.. they just bought the key online and kept playing with the Beta client..
