Actually this issue has been brough up already in congress and senate too in the U.S. This isn't a big issue yet but sooner or later it is gonna be. The big question here is "are virtual properties taxable?". This is certainly aimed at RMT (Real Money Trading) which is fast becoming a multi-million dollar a year industry. Also this issue isn't just aimed at mmorpgs, but the internet as a whole. Should the internet be taxed ? Of course there are a lot of issue that needs to be worked out due to the international nature of the internet. But the way I see it eventually everything in the internet will be subject to government tax as well but I won't see this becoming a major issue for the next 5 years.

I think like 40 total. Read the articles, the game went to beta while in a half finished state and when it wasn't ready for beta.

Another story of corporate backstabbing and betrayal in the MMO industry. But hey, to be fair there's two sides of this story and it's up to you on who to believe.

Too bad a possibly good MMO game that went down the toilet due to internal company bickerings.

Yeah... all the data drain part are only available during avatar battles which are few and is scripted. The reason is because avatars are sooo powerful that the only thing that can beat an avatar is another avatar. Even the weakest avatar can destroy anything even the highest level characters and put the player him/herself into a coma. I can't wait for volume 2. Right now I'm simply clearing up all the lose ends such as the quest shops and trying to get all the cut scenes to unlock in the 1000 Book.

Disclaimer: Do not try this at home. If you really tried this stunt with your Xbox 360 and it caught fire and exploded in front of your face scarring you for life and burn down your house then I am not liable for any injury/death and/or any loss of personal property and/or limbs. Furthermore I would consider you certifiably insane and you will need to be put on a straight jacket and sent to a psychiatric ward for the rest of your life.

From what I heard about .hack/fragment it's not a true mmorpg. Basically Bandai's servers only acts as a player chat room / meeting room and the actual games are hosted on player's machine. And from what I read about it from other players, it wasn't too popular in japan. The service is free tho.

In volume 3 Haseo gains a 4th form call Xth Form with his Adept Rogue class.

First form = Twin Blades (uses 2 swords or daggers)
2nd form = Edge Punisher (uses a large 2h sword blade)
3rd form = Scythe Reaper (uses a scythe)
4th form = Bladegunner (uses 2 guns with blades on the front)

The world is a complete sand-box game. You have big world, a lot of customization, you can do whatever you want, ffa pvp, fights where matters your skill etc. so yes.. i would like to see .hack mmo =]

I would love to see a real "The World R:2" mmo. I heard that Bandai got something in the works altho there's nothing concrete yet. The only news I've heard was that they are porting .hack//Fragments to america.

Correction with the their form of income as being the cash shop, you would want your subscribers to be online actively playing and wasting their real life money on your cash shop items.

I agree, it wouldn't be that hot of a game.  Maybe if it was released before Phantasy Star it would be different.

Well G.U. stands for a lot of things, you gotta play the game and follow the whole .hack series to "get" it. For the game .hack//GU: Rebirth ... GU means Growing Up because the protagonist of the game grows up from being a selfish bastard to actually care for his friends.

I tried it. I didn't particularly like it. The game offers nothing new to the table but then again I'm a jaded mmo player and very hard to please. In my opinion, Flyff would probably be a better game in my book. Then again the graphics for Rappelz uses Unreal engine and looks quite nice with all the shaders.

and PvP!!!! Actually the dungeon isn't instanced. It just uses a keyword to make an area since other players can also join the same area you are in if they input the same keyword. But I guess you are right, if they took out the storyline plot it would make a really boring game. I heard they are planning to port .hack//fragments to america in 2007.

/ignore is your friend. Seriously Blizzard needs to expand the ignore list from 30 people to 500 people. I tried petitioning Blizzard to expand the ignore list and I always get ignored.

Finished this game clocked at 28 hours. I really enjoyed this game but I felt it was kinda short (far too short for the expected 40 hours that the game developer predicted in an interview). Anyway, wouldn't it be cool if they made a real "The World R:2" mmorpg ?

As far as the David Allen story goes, the article that 'exposes' the takeover has been floating around for a few years now. It's totally one-sided (as in, the only person who's side is presented is David Allen's) but a lot of people take it as gospel truth. The thing with the takeover is this: David Allen had spent a lot of his investors' money and there was nothing to show for it but a lot of neat ideas. The investors wanted to see a product ship, and they voted David Allen out. David Bowman had been hired because of his experience at Bungie and Turbine. He had gotten products out the door, and that's why the board of directors put him in charge. David Bowman did not backstab David Allen; David Allen screwed up and his investors fired him for it.

David Allen had some terriffic ideas, but if you look up the interviews and articles he did, anytime someone asked if the game would have a given feature, his answer was always "Yes!" While that may sound great, making a promise without checking to see if the programming team and the game engine can deliver is a really bad idea. If he'd set realistic goals and focused on achieving them, he probably wouldn't have gotten fired from his own project.

In any case that's a pretty messed up story. It's such a shame that Horizons has had great potential that didn't get realized. I did play Horizons for close to 8 months and I had a great time playing it and did met some really good friends there. Unfortunately the game went down the hill after launch.

Last winter, when the majority of the media and public still remaind safely ignorant about the virtual assets market I was talking about it to a dean of a the business school at my university and he brought up a very interesting issue.

If it is possible to make money on rare items and chars there is a conflict of interest for coders and developers. How easy is it for a coder on the developer team to go into his little coding interface create a full blown high level avatar with excellent gear or, even simpler, just a certain amount of currency and then sell it on IGE or ebay?

Do you think we'll see any of that in the near future? Does anyone know if that's already going on?

AVATAR REALM

Actually this issue was brought up a long time ago when a GM of UO was caught selling GM created gold on Ebay. Of course the GM was fired but no charges were bought against him. When this kind of news spread it diminishes the trust between subscribers and the game company. The EULA that we agree to before playing a game outlines the behavior and trust that is acceptable between the players and the game company. When such kind of breach happens it is bad for all parties involved.

I have been thinking... perhaps an interesting feature to implement in mmorpgs is "a virtual stock market". You could perhaps buy stocks in a certain npc establishment like an inn or npc shop. If the npc's service is being utilized a lot by other players it's stock would eventually appreciate and from time to time (perhaps once a RL month) the npc would pay dividends to its investor players. Just something I'm thinking while being bored at work :D So far haven't seen this feature implemented in any mmorpgs yet. What do you guys think ?

Well ... I started playing online RPGs back in 1992... back then they were called MUDs (Multi User Dungeons). They aren't exactly MASSIVELY Multiuser in the sense that at most only a hundred or so people play at the same time (back then bandwidth IS very EXPENSIVE) to be able to support a hundred user at once you need at least a T1 connection and those cost a small fortune back in 1992. But it IS a fun and exciting new world then and everything is in text and you gotta use your imagination to picture the strange new world you are in.

If u are Willing to help me and not just crush the whole concept then reply back saying "il help you

And you failed again to mentioned what kind of "coder" you are looking for. What kind of game engine are you gonna use? Are you thinking of getting someone to develop a new engine from the ground up? And lastly do you have at least 3 million dollars since it pretty much cost that much to develop a commercially viable professional quality modern game these days. John Smedley mentioned that it cost them 3 million dollars to develop Everquest and that was back in 1996.  If you don't have that kind of money well you can always use Realmcrafter as a game engine. Only $65 bucks! Or you can go for the Unreal 2.0 engine which only cost US$350,000 (according to my sources) per license per game. If you are going for cutting edge technology there's the Unreal 3.x engine for tomorrow's games.

There now let it not be said I don't help out aspiring game developers.

Sorta. the very first MMORPG was an AOL game called Never winter nights (don't confuse it with the NWN released a few years back on PC)

AOL earned a ton of money off that game considering you're charged on a per hour basis @_@.
