there are abundant reasons and justifications for law and order without God.

Did law and order just pop out of the blues or was it instinct?

What person wants to get raped in the parking lot, or stabbed in the grocery store? Who wants that whether you believe in God or not?

 You're absolutely right about the past, but the present is another issue.

 

We're moving out from the belief of a God because we can govern ourselves in ways other than irrational fear now. The belief in Gods was not only a natural part of evolution, it was, as you say, vital. Religion served as a method of governance in the past, as complex thoughts (or memes) were new and became dangerous, it was necessary to suppress and control that information through the meme of religion in order to maintain the previous level (genes) and the newly established society meme.

Now, we're continuing to evolve our memes. We no longer need a religion to determine what is right or wrong as we can determine that for ourselves through a more flexible form of government (our Constitution shows that much). Religion is becoming a vestigial form, like our tail bones or our appendix (it was important at one time, but is no longer required). We will probably lose it entirely in another two hundred years, granted that some teme doesn't get us all killed.

It's a process of safe experimentation. Everything must work this way. First, we must develop a defense mechanism against the next level of information and ease it in... slowly. It is poison if taken in too fast, but can make us collectively stronger if we do it slowly. The Dark Ages was an example of how memes can destroy us - Rome fell, all that technology information was lost for a while because of rogue memes and we resorted back to religion as structure for society. This was long after the advent of complex memes, but still an important scenario.

 

The more inflexible the structure, the less memes can get through (we need the memes, just not the harmful ones!). If the structure is not rigid enough (Rome), however, everything will fall apart.

Religions right now are too rigid. Governments are getting a little more porous... but you're right to be cautious about it being too flexible, lest the Rome scenario happens again. Needless to say, Rome didn't fall because of their scruples, it fell because the system of governance was spread far too thin and eventually overrun by another meme which destroyed it.

Regardless, we survived entering into the battlefield of memes, thanks to the first Religions! Now, if we can just survive leaving it, we'll only have temes to worry about. Religion and God, however, won't help us in our battle of temes, as we need more flexible governance.

 

 

It's essentially the same as balancing hot and cold to get the perfect "warm." Too cold and everything freezes (religion), too hot and it all melts away (weak structure). It has to be in the Goldilocks Zone, just like our pretty blue marble of a planet, for anything more to grow.

I'm pretty sure things start cold and get hot as the cycle repeats. Pre-big bang, it was probably "cold." Before our star and planets formed, it was "cold." According to the laws of thermodynamics, there must be greater energy present for the input as the output is always less. So we have to figure out: was the universe "cold" before the big bang? Or was it always "hot"? This could prove or disprove my general theory.

I think this is just how things go in our reality: first established rigidity, then experimentation to find flexibility. First cold, then warm and hot.
