Every game that has launch or gone f2p has claimed or been declared a "roaring sucess". Come back in a two to six months and you will see a bit of a different story.

Another f2p or should I say pay to win game? No thank you. It might have a lot of features that I wish other MMO's would adopt but I will not be suckered into that whole so-called free to play mess. It is just not worth it.

Mr. Bennet is right while he is also wrong. He is right that men spend too much time doing wasteful things. What he is wrong about is that men in general do it ONLY playing video games. Many men waste their time in bars or in front of the TV. The difference with video games and just those two other examples is that you can have a much more positive experience with the video games. At the same time, too much of anything is TOO MUCH. If you are playing vid games or going to the bar or watching TV more then 8 hours a day, maybe you need to push yourself away and go outside for a while.

Do you think the companions are too hot?

I don't think that ALL of them are "hot". Being a male myself, I am not at all drawn in a romantic way to Khem Val or any of the droid companions. Even the female alien ones are not "hot" by my standards. Besides, none of you have seen my HOT wife. :)

I don't know about everyone else but I am paying for some form of civility and seperation from those that demand "free stuff" or think they are "entitled" to everything without paying OR working for it. In other words, playing a video game is NOT a civil right.

You pay a subscription fee so you can feel superior to a straw man you made up in your head? Nice. Let the imaginary people eat cake, huh?

Nobody is talking about playing games for free, or games being some sort of unalienable right. Whether you want to discuss subscription based games or a B2P game like GW2...you are always paying for the box at the very least.

We're talking about value for the player's money, and what the various payment models offer in terms of game design. I might argue that the subscription fee itself creates dramatically more of an entitlement mentality...players believe that they should be catered to individually in every way, and their play style supported exclusively, simply because of their $15 per month payment.

I do believe that I was responding to the TITLE of this discussion thread. Which for your own education was "MMOs with subscription fees... what are you pay for?". What I wrote is MY answer to that question....not yours...MINE. Thank you for playing.

Yeah it sucks, yeah it happened.  "Deal with it."

Not me. Or at least I haven't seen it yet.

And it has already been posted a zillion times on the SWTOR forums that it was a mistake.

DF was ok to a point. My complaint has always been that promises are made but reality tells a different story when it comes to game development. I am also just a little burnt out on an "Open World" pvp game where you can get ganked in FRIENDLY territory with no repercussions....but that is a different story.

So, now people are beginning to see the f2p trend for what it is......A JOKE! ;)

Most people, me included, agree that more respect needs to be maintained online and the only way for that to happen is for people who are constantly shit talking online to get into shit for doing it. And the ONLY way for that to happen, is if it's mandatory to have your real name and address on forums; you shit talk, you get your ass kicked.

Now, the only problem is when the roles are reversed; the kid was not 13, and was in fact someone with a few knives or guns, but....meh.

The instance quoted would actually only have resulted in the same outcome. Posting on the internet a person real name and address is about like painting a target on your back. Every "crazy" that can get it would use and abuse that info. Face, there are "jerks" on the internet. I would NEVER want them to know where I live and I am probably one of the more civil individuals you might meet...on and off the internet.

I love the other thread asking if they are lying about limiting sales.

I can't wait to hear all the wailing and screaming from people who can't get a copy or have to wait on a waiting list.

Got my DDE day1 and registered within 12 hours of sales opening. (I had to wait til after work.)

Now , I think I'm going to go find a nice new adult guild to play with. (I usually join a new guild in a new game.)

**wave**

Nice scare tactics man. if there is no copies left that EA's loss not mine, im sure i can spend my money on one of a number of games coming out around christmas.

This "scare tactics" line of thinking on a GAME is pretty strange. Now, if it were bread lines forced because of a broken communist dictatorship like in Russia several decades ago.....maybe they might have something. But for a game?

To Gruug: I would go so far as to argue that this practice should be referred the OFT if a full refund is not offered.  But it is not the issue I was discussing.

Sorry, but I am not sure I follow your response. But you WERE disucssing cash shops and the fact that you use them and that is what allows "free" players to play.

On these forums there is a lot of bashing of cash shops which I truly do not understand.  Someone has to pay the bills on a free to play game and that would be those of us you chastise for using cash shops.  Frankly you are entirely reliant upon those of us who reach into our pockets for your (free) game playing experience.  You can't get something for nothing.

A game is a business model, if you do not like the way it is set up or the model it uses to earn revenue, then you do not like the game and should quit it for something else.  Making money is fundamental to all commercial games.  Again, you can't get something for nothing.

I think that is the end of my rant.

So what you are saying then is that since you pay the bills and those that play for free are...well...freeloaders? I guess my "issue" with so-called free-to-play models is that the game is NOT free nor should it be to everyone because I do not want to fund someone else's gaming addiction out of my pocket. In fact and truth, I WON'T.

What do you guys think of this?

*EDIT* My thoughts:  It's really good that they appear to be taking their time.  My only hope is that this isn't a sign of lack of confidence in how close they are to release.  Let's hope this just makes more of a quality game.

This "news" is three or four weeks old. Some here on mmorp posted a link that quote the EA CFO as making that statement. It is NOT a statement that the game WILL be launched later then 2011 but a warning to investors that there is a POSSIBILITY that it could slip. That is pretty much standard operating procedure for any publicly held company. So, don't read too much into it. We have known all along that BW has stated they are "shooting for" a holiday 2011 release but that the game would not launch until they were satisfied it was ready. No big deal IMHO.

Interesting that Dan is leaving just before STO goes F2P. Even though he says he supports and always supported a move to f2p, I just wonder if new owners at Perfect Worlds didn't like what they were paying him and asked him to leave. This does not bode well for STO. STO has come a long ways under Dan's leadership since he took over. I just don't see it continuing.

Apparently it has nothing to do with that:

" I've been given the opportunity to start the next chapter in my career that allows me to combine many of my past experiences into something new. It will also allow my family to move into San Francisco where my beautiful Fiancee Kimberly has worked for years. "

Cant blame him either. When better job opportunities open up you should take them.

What is put out as the reason doesn't particularly mean that he isn't taking the opprotunity to just jump ship OR to give cover for his desire to leave to to friction with PW. No proof of this of course but it is just curious that he choose to leave or was not asked to stay longer by PW. Seems with the "big deal" that the F2P launch is that PW would want him to stay at least until that is launched. Since he will be gone by F2P launch, it looks much more like he ever wanted out to avoid the trainwreck OR PW wanted him out so that they can start doing things their way sooner.

I have very little faith in PW's ability to put together quality games. I have looked a a good number of what they have and I just don't see anything the quality of STO at the moment. I just think they will have a certain way they are going to do things and that way will not fall within the "vision" that Dan had for the game. My opinion of course and we may never know Dan's take for sure regardless of what is being said right now.

So let's look at Bioware's options:

Set a release date - Fail to meet release date - move date back = community upset

Set a release date - Launch - game not up to standards (it will never meet this community's expectations) = community upset

Don't set a release date - game launches well = community upset (because it took too long)

Don't set a release date - game launches poorly = community upset (because it wasn't finished)

-----

Point is, Bioware cannot win. So Bioware does what they need too - launch when its ready. People will still play it and nothing will change that. People, I do not think, are not running out canceling their pre-orders.

At this point, the game better launch well or their will be a lot of anger and rightfully so. Most people will tolerate the time it takes to release the game if it releases well. if not, it could get ugly for sure.

The only problem here is that at some point EA will step in and say "release it" whether ready or not. EA's track record in doing just that is well documented with buggy and half finished games that failed terribly. I am sure the folks at BW want to "release when its ready" but EA may not...no...won't allow it.

If they can somehow manage to get the SW out of the game, then maybe it relaunches.  Otherwise this game is dead forever.

It does seem like a cruel joke that they would bring something as cool as flying around and killing each other on the planets after this game is scheduled for demolition.  Touche SOE.

Once SWTOR crashes and burns to mediocrity this game will get the green light to go f2p.

We all know the only reason SoE is shutting this down is so LA can soak up every bit of the SW fans into TOR. Once TOR proves itself to be nothing but a normal mmo and not a massive 11+ million sub juggernaught LA will loosen its grip and you will get SWG back

Even with Atmo AND especially if it were f2p, I would not go back to SWG. The game went from "fixable" before CU to horrid after NGE. Add f2p and you have a turkey in an item shop.

I think the OP is complaining mostly about the C-store item shop then the game proper. I have always found space combat in STO very good, ground combat needed work (which it got) and overal game play to be good. Additions such as the Foundry; revamped sector space; Weekly Episodes and now the "Borg Invasion" excellent.

However, now that  Dan Dstahl is leaving the game...right on the outset of f2p launch...I may have to reconsider my position on this game. Wasn't overly confident in the change to f2p (seen what it has done in other games) but with Dan leaving, I just do not see anything good coming down the road.
