General: Jennings: Morality, Controversy & Games
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/26/09 12:41:14 AM
The way I looked at the MW2 mission was that it was a chance to reflect. I took no particular "joy" in the mission and the outcome at the end was pretty much what I expected. I attempted to not shoot any civies and would have avoided shooting the police if the game would have allowed me that option. Unfortunately, in order to complete it you MUST shoot the police. You, on the other hand did not have to shoot the civies (thankfully). But as I said, the mission is a chance to reflect on a lot of subjects....terrorism....crime....morality...death and destructin of civilians caught in the crosshairs. Most importantlly, it reflects how the "bad" can think of people while the soldier has to worry about protecting the civilian populous. |

I personally spent about a year and a half recently playing EVE Online about every day. I enjoyed. I had friends that I played with. But, unfortunately, they moved on....not to other MMO's just out of EVE. I considered joining a large Corp but finely just gave up. One of the reasons, CCP's nack for promosing things and then not quite making it happen. I was one of those that was actually excited by the "walking in stations" stuff when announced but, it seemed to me CCP was just putting off. Now I understand you just don't integrated something like this overnight. However, I was getting a feeling that CCP was just stringing me along to keep taking my monthly subscription fee. Every once and a while CCP would release new info and make it sound like it might be soon (without saying "soon"). I just got tired of waiting. Maybe after they make it happen I will go back and see how it goes. Just not now. I will note that I really liked the sandbox feel of the game. If my friends were still there, I probably would be too. |

General: The Free Zone: EA and Free to Play?

Now it is a nice second MMO that i can play a little and if i want more adventure, i can buy a pack. The nicest thing is that i don't have to play "seriously" to get my money worth. I don't know if Turbine can make enough off this model, but it certainly benefits ME. And i surely hope that SWTOR is going that route. More f2p MMOs means that i can sample, and play multiple MMOs at the same time.
Apparently you missed it or do not understand my point. I, me, do not wish to PAY for YOUR playtime. If I, me, am paying the subscription for YOU to play for free it only benefits YOU and not ME. I already support too many other people to have to now be expected to support free loaders like YOU. Good day. ;) |

It is a said state of the gaming world when we the gamer are being duped into thinking that this so-called F2P model will be "good" for us. There is just not anything about that benefits the gamer. It does, if we are so duped, fully benefit the game companies. Now, I am not about being against game companies. I am about expecting the most quality and entertainment for the gaming dollars that I spend. Hence, F2P can in no way be a good thing. |

Sorry, I don't agree. If you play as say a Might character and then play as say a Munitions character you have to do things differently. And then play as a Gadeteer and again you have new tactics you must use. While I do agree that there are gaps in content and that I would like to see two to three times the content in game needed level. The first thing that everyone has to remember is that this IS a new MMO and that content will be (and already has been) added to the game. Cryptic has comitted to adding more content over the coming months. So, if you are one that only played for a short time...you missed out already. ;) |

CCP has been long on promises and short on delivery. While I enjoyed my time in EVE, I was disappointed in the the "promises" made by CCP and the "delays" in bringing things to life. To those that are still there, stay. It was, and still is, not for me. |

You can play CO either way..solo or in group. To say there no group content or to it is too group orienated is just not accurate in any case. You play the game how you wish to play it. The only shortcoming at the moment is that there are gaps in the quests that force you to grind for xp in order to level OR force you to attempt to take on missions several levels above your own. I am sure that shortcoming will be addresed soon. (It is one reason I hate XP driven games) |

Lot's of people do not have Xfire. I use to but dropped it because it is just functional in my opinion. Using it to say a game is "good" or "bad" is just insane. |

As per "diluting" what is Star Trek, well, Star Trek is pretty much anything and everything in the Star Trek universe...not JUST being a part of a crew. Frankly, the type of game you are discribing is exactly the game that most people will not play. Why? Because most of John Q. Public has no desire to team up with complete strangers just to play a game. Why would or should anyone be FORCED to team up in the first place. Should it not be a matter of choice. And, based upon human nature, how many people are going to conform to being subserviant to a particular Captain in the first place. Most people want to be the leader of their own destiny and not captives of someone else's. Best advice I can give those that are "insisting" upon player crews is this, don't play this game. For the rest, we will have fun with the game as conceptialised. |

Even the first iteration of the game by Perpetual was going to be extremely difficult to carry off that way. Cyrptic has said they may add something like that later. As to being "alone", I would say no. You can group in fleets in space and you can group for away missions on the ground...so you are only going to be alone as you make yourself. |

I played SWG from Launch almost daily up until I cancelled my sub after 3 years. The game was very good after the release of the second expansion, Jump to Lightspeed being the first and the "Wookie" world being the 2nd. From there on the game just got worse and worse in regards to the franschise of Star Wars. By the time I left, it was no longer Star Wars but some game dressed up to LOOK like Star Wars. The fun had goine out of the thing. That is not to say that the mechanics didn't work or that you could have made it into some ofther MMO. Everything you needed to make some other MMO was there. But since the game had so much promise before the radical changes and the game just will never be the same. I am holding out for SW:TOR Online although I know it too will not be up to the early SWG experience. It will probably be much better then SWG today. |

Well said. I will say that I have been disappointed with the lack of updates. TOR seems to have a new update every other week while this game hasn't given me anything new since that character creation video. It's gotten to the point that I no longer post on the official site because there isn't anything left to talk about.
Cryptic has been putting most of its efforts into launching Champions Online (due September 1). I expect that within a month or two of that launch that you will see a lot more activity over on the STO side, including an update of the website and forums. In fact, the guy in charge of the Champions project is moving his office over (actually downstairs) to the STO offices after launch of Champions. So, things WILL start to happen. |

General: Massey: Subsciption Fee Creativity
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/31/09 12:01:00 AM
"Free to Play" is such a joke. It is actually false advertising as far as I am concerned. Yes, you can play the game for free but lot of the game is "missing". Free to play is not free. If you really want to play the WHOLE game you end up paying more then you would if they charged the normal $14.99 per month. MTs in MMOs are going to be the same way. You are going to get LESS out of your game for that $14.99 per month (assuming they also have the MT model with the sub). So, you actually end up missing part of the game you are paying for. I am just not in favor of any of it. Those that can't afford the sub are going "more free to play". Those that don't care about what they pay are going "more MTs". Niether is the answer. If this is the model that all MMOs are going to then I simply will not play. I can find something else worth $14.99 per month to do and it won't be an MMO. |

"Soloing" does not mean you always play alone. It means that at times there it just makes sense to play alone and that you can do it if you want. My case in particular is that I play during "off" hours sometimes and it is hard to find people to play with. It is also hard to find people that I WANT to play with at times. It does not mean I won't play with people but that I just want to play the game without the drama that some players bring to their game. So, soloing is just a means to one's own ends. It is not the only means. However, it would be unfortunate to have an MMO not include the abiltiy to solo ever. |

I read (and sometimes post) in the STO community forums. I read the website for STO. So far, there really is little known about the actual gameplay. What is known is there is going to be a lot of customisation of both players and ships in the game. There will be PvP but not open PvP. There will be some form of exploration. There will be space and ground combat. What is not known are the specifics. Until those become a little more clear, all the rants about how STO is not going to live up to expectations are pretty well moot. |

F2P is such misinformed term. Misinformed because people hear that word "free" and just assume that it is going to also be good and free. Unfortunately, neither is the case. Anyone every hear of the terms "no such thing as a free lunch" or "you get what you pay for". Both terms apply to MMO's as much as they do to anything else. The company making an MMO "f2p" has to get it's money from somewhere. If it doesn't get it from subs and it doesn't get it from micros then what do you things gets pulled out (or rather never put in)......content and probably quality. Those companies just budget what they CAN afford so they do make money. So, F2P is always going to cost SOMETHING and it will always be at the expense of the players!

At one point I was actuallly interested in this game. That is until they removed a lot of features and then decided to delay any US launch. At that time, I said I would not play Darkfall. Based upon the shody lauch in the first place and the aforementioned items, I have not changed my mind. I will stay as far away from Darkfall as I can. In fact, this forum is about as close to Darkfall as this writer will ever get. |

anyone else worried about getting a large base of immature players..similiar to WOW
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 6/07/09 10:53:51 PM
I will point out for the record that I am in my 50's Wtith that said, age has nothing to do with maturity or lack there of in an MMO. I have seen people older than I act very immature while I have seen those as young as 6 or 7 act far beyond their years. Maturity is a matter of self control....something that many people just do not have a good grasp on how to handle. Every MMO I have ever played has a certain percentage that just can't seem to control themselves in a social enviroment of an MMO. So, regardless of what MMO you name, it will have a certain level of immaturity. |

I have just started playing CoH/CoV about three weeks ago. I signed up to play as a second MMO (actually 3rd but that one I am leaving). I signed on BECAUSE of the AE primarily but also because of the other asspects of the game. I probably only do a couple of AE missions a week. The rest of the time I am having fun out leveling one of my now 7 Heros or Villians. While I consider CoH/CoV my second home, I have racked up a lot of hours there without logging much onto my main MMO. Now, I understand there is a "new" superhero MMO coming in July. Will that effect CoH/CoV, probably. Will I be out of luck, no. These are just games and if CoV/CoH would die then I would just go elsewhere. Until then, I will have fun with it. |

I will be 54 next month. I have been playing video games since well before PC's or Atari's or Nintento's or PSx's. I started playing (alpha and beta testing) MMO's in the late 90's. I am particular as to which one's I play and never play more then 2 at a time |
