The term "MMORPG" has it's "RPG" part from Computer RPGs, where one of the core ideas and goals of the game is significant character development through achievements, meaning you're not supposed to be powerful when you start out but work your way up - over time.

I'll suggest Planetside (an MMOFPS) or WWII Online (MMO War Simulation Game), or a game with a different kind of improvement / achievement style like Eve, Neocron or Ultima Online. Maybe CoX would be an option too, though I haven't played it in ages so not sure about the levelling speed.

I have do politely disagree with this definition. MMORPG can apply to games such as WWII Online, Planetside and EVE can all be termed as MMORPG's and not MMOFPS. Reason I say this is that by your own definiton, they all have some from or character development. It is the means by which they achieve that development that differs from games like WoW or LOTRO. "Leveling" in those later two types of games is just a linear path attained only through the accumulation of experience points....like amassing gold or credits. It is purely linear and does not need a lot of for thought in the path or actual "need" of the developement. The other games, while not linear for the most part, require more thought in putting together a skill set at to how you succeed in those games. It does not make them an less "RPG" then WoW or any other MMO.

Alright ive been trolling the forums for a while today looking at a few things and trying to figure out what MMO is for me. My search has been fruitful and i have been looking at EVE for a while but i have a few questions.

1.) Can i play this game at a casual pace and still enjoy much of the content it has to offer?

Yes you can....but don't expect to "rush" through it. Take your time and you will enjoy more.

2.) I have heard numerous times that this game can be a little bit much to handle in the PvP arena once you decide to risk it. I enjoy PvP once in a while but only at a minor level. Is this game for me on this level?

The new expansion allows players to get into PvP extremely fast. Now, does that mean you will be good at? Depends. Join a good Corp (ie Clan/Kin) that specalizes in helping you in your chosen path. If you want to PvP there are many Corps that help train PvP to new players.

3.) Many People and Posts have told me that this game is truely the richest in depth and especially so with crafting in the economy. Is this something i can jump into or is it gonna take me months of playing and working at it?

You can jump in at any time...start...late...makes no difference. But, as with life, don't expect to be the "mega" crafter on day one. Day twenty...maybe...lol.

Now i know this mostly pertains to time investment and the whole can a casual gamer enjoy this quandry, but being a worker and a full time student i need something that i can manage around my schedule without having to be thinking about it all the time.

Being that EVE is my "second" MMO that I play I will say you can put in as much or as little time as you like. I really think the skill training methods in EVE actually are catered more toward the player that has little time to invest since you don't have to be in game to actually advance.

Thanks so much for any help that you are willing to provide. I am also interested in hearing any general knowledge of the game and good solid reasons for joining.

Secondly, reduce unnecessary timesinkers.  Most of your time playing this game you'll notice you're just flying towards a jumpgate or a space station and it takes just too dame long.  Some of the missions will start you out 15 minutes away from the jumpgate to begin for absolutely no reason.  No reason at all...

Third, the missions are just horrible.  WoW is a complete carebear game, but at the very least the game had a lot more to do PvE then this game will ever dream of having.

Fourth, start new players out with much much more money.  You don't start with crap so you get to run the same repatative newbie missions for chump change.

If you're a newbie solo player, you're screwed completely.  You can't fight anyone cause they're going to have more skills and most likely more money hence better equipment and ship.  If you're lucky enough to know a few people or be in a corporation you'll probably just be known as another anklebiter.

Charging 15$ a month for this game is insulting and shameful.

I read this and then had to re-read the forum title. What game is this guy playing? I have been playing EVE for about 7 months and am having a blast. I would much rather play this game then any of those other WoW or WoW cookie cutter games. EVE is a game that takes bit more thought so maybe that is way this guy can't understand. I have to say he can't understand it because he misrepresented just so many aspects of the game. Just this statement "Some of the missions will start you out 15 minutes away from the jumpgate....." is SO out of touch. 15 minutes???? Either he has such a 1990 computer or he doesn't know how to play this game. Maybe he hasn't played this game? I wonder?

I have played on a trial account twice...once at launch and again not too long ago. Would have subed but couldn't get my friends to all go along. Anyway, every time I have played I have never had any trouble getting someone to give me some help. In fact, many people went above and beyond to try to help me in game with what would have seemed like very trivial issues. I commend them. If you have a little patience, you might find someone willing to help.

Now, as to your problem with your joystick, I would say you are doing something wrong. I have used CH joysticks and recently Saitek joystick without ever having a problem configuring them. Since I am not currently playing, I can not get in the game to tell you how you should proceede. But, again, I think if you ask the right person in the game you could get the help you need. Also, as a suggestion, find a "clan" that is willing to help new people. There seems to be a lot of those around.

Anyway, my two cents so good luck!

Strategy to cheat to get ahead? I am sure if CCP says it is a exploit that they did not know of the issue before it happened. Therefore, it is an unintended game mechanic. As such, I am sure CCP will take action to remove said exploit. In the meantime, it is ok for CCP to notify everyone that it is an exploit and that those using that exploit will be dealt with.

The thing that gets me is that people really think that if you can exploit you should exploit. I just don't get it in a game (or in real life for that matter). Am I the only one that tries to play by the rules?

There are a lot of companies that did not choose to attend E3 this year. It has become pretty much a waste of time. If the developers of DF choose not to show up, it is their dollar. I won't get into the debate over whether DF will ever see the light of day or not. E3 has nothing to do with that debate.

FIrst, the box and the instruction manual state "Online experience subject to change".

Second, anyone can try to sue over just about anything. You don't even need a lawyer. However, the Judge in such a case does not have to grant your petition for trial.

Point of this, if you feel froggy, go for it....but good luck.

I won't be giving up any game to play D3. There is not anything that would get me interested in D3 in the first place. I played  D1 and D2, they were ok for there time but that time has passed. Blizzard, at this point, doesn't have anything in its tank except re-runs. How about something new!

Sorry but if it is BioWare making the game it will not be sandbox. BioWare is a story telling rpg company and they are REALLY good at it. An MMO by them would be very much like LotRO but better. They have stated that they are using some well known standards but have some pretty revolutionary ideas. We shall see what that is. At the very least it should be a polished product because the  MMO has been stated to have a 100 million dollar budget with EA putting up some money for it. Expect Mass Effect style NPC interaction, Kotor like environment, an ability to be both evil and good (Ie. their Paragon/renegade) system, the ability to finish quests multiple ways (same system as before) and expect jedi. I only hope they use the Mass Effect combat model though for ranged. I love that game  .

I am still not convinced that Bio is doing a SW MMO. But let us go with the assumption for a second. While I agree with your statement that Bioware is a "storytelling rpg company", I don't particularly agree that that system would be good for an MMO. Having not seen that system in a MMO I could be wrong and therefore prejudging too harshly. My concern is that such system as in KOTOR or Mass Effect is just too slow paced to work in any MMO. It drives things in too much of a linear fashion (yes I said lnear). Although many think of KOTOR and Mass Effect as non-linear, they were in fact linear but with several alternate lines. Each line was just a linear subset and not in any way free-form. This only accomplished allowing various forms of outcomes but all of them were pre-ordained. Putting this into an MMO (to me) would only slow and limit what would normally be a large world as in an MMO setting. Now, if Bioware were to do a MMO of any kind, I do think they would be heavy on story. I just don't think they would use the KOTOR or Mass Effect system to tell that story.

Just want to point out that "online" does not particularly mean MMO. Online could be a wide range of things including "mobile" IP's for cell phone games. It does not mean that it could not be an MMO, just that it is far broader then what the OP implies or what many that have posted here are trying to suggest.

On the other hand Im still shocked SWG actually has a forum still, thought SOE would have takin it over and hired positive bloggers to promote their incredible game.

Actually that is not true. SOE (or any other MMO for that matter) rarely gets rid of old characters. SOE, at least up to last year, has said they would not delete old characters from inactive accounts. That does not mean that they won't delete houses from locations if the upkeep runs out. Even then, I think SOE holds the house in you backpack with all contents if you decide to resub.

I left in good standing about 1 1/2 years ago but I won't ever go back to SWG. SWG is not the Star Wars game that I had hoped it would be. CU/NGE aside, SWG just is not really a Star Wars like game to me. Unfortunately, it took me over 3 years of playing SWG to realise that.

No offense all but I am done with Bioware now that they are a house organ of Electronic Arts. I just have no faith in anything that EA does these days. Sure, Bioware WAS a great development house before being swallowed up by EA. EA generally ruins the houses they take over. I just don't see that EA will keep their "hands off" this if it is indeed true (which by the way I still have my doubts).

I have read and re-read the OP's post and it sure looks to me like he was expecting to get 30 days of free game play for activating his account. Account activation requires a credit card or a game card. OP was not attempting to activate a 14-day free trail account. It also appears that the OP did not attempt to activate his product correctly. That is not SOE's fault but SOE could probably help get him up and running if he would call them.

A lot of people forget these options are there and only rely on in game options. In most cases fix the majority of performance issues.

Those with nvidia cards that are experiencing these problems, try setting your AA & AF settings to half way instead of full or off. Newer cards perform better with them on instead of off and with it being in beta, it might not be fully optimised for your spec being on max settings.

If you are still having problems, set your OS display properties for Vsync to application controlled and turn it on in game. (If this was already on in game, try turning it off). This option can improve or make your performance worse depending on your spec.

Hope this helps.

I tried all of this and it really did not help. In fact, it made the game look so ugly that I just turned it off. It still did not address the crashes or the lag or the poor rendering.

Lag...terrible rendering rates...crashes...bugs galore and a combat system that doesn't yet seem "finished". If I were Funcom I would delay this game at least another six months. But, since MMORPG asked a Funcom guy and he is oh so positive I am sure that AoC will be launched with a lot of warts. As to the "150 developers" working on AoC for the next two weaks to tweak and polish, good luck on that. I have seen a lot of MMO's in far better shape going into that "crunch" time and I just don't see how they would ever address without making worse some of the problems this game has.

I know it won't do much when I say this but, if you were going to buy this game at launch....wait. Wait at least a month and see what reviews come in from those that failed to listen and put down the cash for a half finished game.

You seem to take quite a negative stance on the game, there are however, some people that haven't had any issues with the game.

Possibly, but I have only come across a handful. Most of those I play with in MMO's won't touch this game based upon my and their experience with it so far. I have had extremely poor performance issues on both a system that meets the specs and on one that is well over the specs. As I said, I have never seen a MMO that has been this poorly recieved...or at least with such mixed reactions. Therefore, I have to stand by my comment that people should just wait before they put down money on this one.

I have been wanting to give this game a try. I love the idea of it. I was a bit put off by the way avatar combat seemed to flop though. I would still like to give it a try but only once there is a 14-day free trial.

Without becoming in violation with the NDA, I have to say that I honestly find AoC to be very lacking. It is missing a lot of what is included in the hype. It doesn't appear that it will live up to the expectations that have been placed upon it. If I were to choose today if I would purchase the game, I would pass.

So, if you are really wanting to check it out then go ahead. Just remember you have been warned.
