It's not so bad as everybody says, a lot of updates have been made since these guys played. Soloing gives double the exp as it did 2 years ago, groups can be made easier because of level sync ( means everybody above the level of the one or those who has the lowest level, will gain the same level as the lowest leveled members of the party). And when you can't party just solo until you find one.
So hope you're not scared a way by these other posts, FFXI is not as easy as WoW, but it's not hard either.
EDIT: About money traders and other people violating the rules of FFXI, then the team behind the game is doing an incredible job, I remember numbers like '8000 bans each month'. I've never met any 'rule violater' in FFXI.

OMG I just hate when people reads my mind! The point is: You won't have small 11-14 year old kids spoiling the game. And please remember that this game is allmost nothing, but party grinding, so you can't have noobs running around.
So Sorry if I hurt anybody by using noob, but you know I'm saying: Don't play Final Fantasy if you want to play for fun, because it's just hard challenges. (It's said many times, no jumping, no swimming ... the game is not made to be any kind of fun or easy)
Haha Square Enix are so genial, it's the perfect noob secure system ^^
June Version Update ~ lvl 99 cap begins by 8 w/ each Abyssea!

I think + 5 levels more is a lot of levels, when we are talking a game as hard as FFXI to level in. Newcomers will more likely take jobs that easily get invited... um wait that's not so bad, because then we will have lots of white mages :D
No the point is, what's gonna happen with not so party affective jobs?
I would say that creativity seems to be missing in a lot of developers, the only reason why the game list have become that much larger is because, the companies are so good at copying.
But talking of FPS having the variety, FPS is sooo much more simple, that is also what half life showed us. The only differences you can make is: Different weapons, environment, walk speed/jump height and that's pretty much it(I'm making a FPS mod condition zero : source if you care, it will not be cs:cz as source there will be more)
But make a list of everything you could make in a mmorpg, go a head and blow you mind with thoughts! So the question could be: Is it possible to make any variety in this genre? Or maybe you are just waiting till it's not possible to make a new mmo.
But you're welcome to wait for your half-life mmorpg, but then I'll write "waited in vain" on your tombstone. No if I become a developer some day, I promise I'll make you something good, because I make stuff with thought behind it.
Also I'm only waiting for FFVI because I know it will be a serious game.
In my opinion Jumping and swimming is only for games where it has a purpose, like ratchet and clank or where it will help in combat counter strike. Jumping and swimming should not be there for fun, FFXI is a serious game and thats why you can't jump or swim. FFXI is a hard game and thats why all those wow kiddo types come and whines "this is to hard", "grinding is so last year" ... This is another Final Fantasy game, how many FF games can you jump and/or swim in?
Well it could be that SE would make it so that the character could jump every time it had to, that is seen before ex. FFX-2.
I think a lot of how you could develop an action mmorpg and when I someday have been educated and get to work for a company it's probably to late, there's not many possibilities to make Original games anymore.

I'm 17 and not educated, so I'm doing this for fun, well I didn't research it any more than this, because that would maybe make me change my already good game idea, and that could end in "getting tired of it" and then I start creating a new one, and as said I just got inspired :D
It's not any kind of serious, lets call it practice, and I just started.

Heh, I joked with a friend about this, and the fact that the one they were trying was called "Fragment", and in the .Hack timeline, that was the first version of the game. I told my friend "If they release a full version several years later with the people who played in fragment getting special models" I will avoid the game, not because it would suck, but because I don't want to be put in a coma by some evil glitch" :P
All serious though, there was a group of people actually working on an MMO, but eventually they had to quit, they had parts of it, the engine, animations, graphics, all working.
Heh... an MMO based of a series of anime/games of people playing an MMO...
Also, that was going to be a feature of the .Hack MMO (official, not fan) was that your computer would be used as part of the server, and if I remember, you'd even be allowed to make dungeons in it.
Okay ty for the information, but what I'm focussing on is, how good am I at developing game idea's so please comment on my idea and not .hack/the world or what ever not related to my idea. Because I make up lots of ideas in my head and sometimes I feel like I want to see what people think of my ideas, so I post them here on mmorpg.com.
Just so you know what it's about :D
Before you start posting questions about "what ever" please read everything!
Many people might had this fought, and I don't know if it's already it's in development, but I feel that I want to develop my ideas. If people don't know .hack it's a manga/anime about a boy playing an mmorpg called "The World". There is already made games for the series, but they aint online and you can online play as the main character, aka it's just an normal rpg with missions and stuff. Well, the game does have features that haven't been seen in real mmos and they are realistic(most of them). btw I'm not a .Hack geek, it just inspired me.
One of the features as an example, is the battle fields, that you create by combining 3 words so you get a weird phrase (ex. 'dancing goblins' 'moonlight' 'hole') so 1 word can somtimes be 2 xD. Anyways every word means something, if it's gonna be a forrest, a plane, a old ruin or what ever. Then it decides difficulty level, element and wethere there will be a cave or not(explanation will come).
A dungeon is a labyrinth of corridors, where you need to find the door to the next floor and the room with the secret treasure, you meet a lot of monsters on your way through a dungeon. There can be from 2 - 5 floors and there's 3 items in the secret treasure.
Well, I've researched on the job classes and think it's messed up, because of different versions of the game and because some where stronger than others. So I decided to "make" my own and still keep it fitting to the old story. So it's pretty much like it but with few changes.
Stats - phys = physical, atk/atck = Attack, def = defence, magi = magic, spd = speed, rng =range.
Well, back to the battle fields and the word combining. I've got the idea that you could make your own computer a server, so when you made your own map it would be run on your computer and if anybody would enter the same phrase he would connect to you. and then you are the admin on that map until you go out of it, so yes you would be able to kick people that you don't like out.
So then my idea is that I will move the whole level system to the Equipment so your equipment has experience points instead of you, and the equipment will change from level to level(more detailed, more beauty and more cool shape). This would make a lot of thinks more easy, people would wear the same equipment for longer time and if anybody wants to start over he doesn't need to make another character, that would save more space of data.
Well I've many times been thinking of equipment that there was only 1 of. So the player who finds the armor will have a special value in guild wars or what it else could become good for.
I'll might continue :D
AND PLEASE DON'T QUESTION ME, ONLY GIVE OPINION OR IDEAS TO WHAT WOULD BE BETTER OR WHAT I CAN ADD!
