After a marathon to create and merge 2 acounts (really?!) and a 9 hour update I am having serious trouble to play this game. I would appreciate all of your help:

- graphic settings: even in full resolution the graphics look really bad and I am almost sure that it is possible to get more from this game. Tips?

Graphics can become is high as any other 2k3 game can. But everything is set to minimum as standard, can be changed through the FINAL FANTASY XI Config but don't expect it to look good at resolutions higher than 1024x768.. That was high resolution back then.

- controls: this made me feel a complete noob; I can't barely move around; didn't figure how to make the char move and (most importantly) where to configure the controls... Pressing WASD types the letters in the chat.

In the ingame menu you can find the settings, in the settings page called misc.2 you can find compact keyboard, which gives you the keyboard you seem to desire. In the Ingame Configuration you can also set up all buttons as you want (KeyAssignments), a good example is if you play on laptop and don't want to have numlock on all the time, change the "open menu key".

- UI: isn't there an ability bar? And how do I see the menus? I couldn't even logout (I needed to control+alt+del).

Last time I looked all custom GUIs was outdated, but I've seen alot of old GUIs that had everything you could possibly want. But you should be fine with the original GUI, it has everything you need atleast at low level, in my opinion. You'll probly end up using a lot of macro's if you stick with the game.

I really would like to try the game (otherwise after all this issues it would already be uninstaled) but as it is and without some advices it is unplayable.

It's not so bad as everybody says, a lot of updates have been made since these guys played. Soloing gives double the exp as it did 2 years ago, groups can be made easier because of level sync ( means everybody above the level of the one or those who has the lowest level, will gain the same level as the lowest leveled members of the party). And when you can't party just solo until you find one.

So hope you're not scared a way by these other posts, FFXI is not as easy as WoW, but it's not hard either.

EDIT: About money traders and other people violating the rules of FFXI, then the team behind the game is doing an incredible job, I remember numbers like '8000 bans each month'. I've never met any 'rule violater' in FFXI.

Haha Square Enix are so genial, it's the perfect noob secure system ^^

In a funny way, this is actually fairly accurate. If a person doesn't have the patience to sit through this atrocity known as the PlayOnline interface in order to get into the game, then they most assuredly WILL NOT have the patience required to play the awesome, beautiful game that lies on the other side.

That being said, the game is old, so is Play Online. Good thing for us, Square likes to innovate and move away from this type of thing and they DID state that PlayOnline will not be a part of FFXIV.

OMG I just hate when people reads my mind! The point is: You won't have small 11-14 year old kids spoiling the game. And please remember that this game is allmost nothing, but party grinding, so you can't have noobs running around.
If you don't believe me, then go see some of the "I hate grinding games!" threads.

EDIT: By the way, I think Square Enix just find something else that will help them keep noobs out of the game. They do nothing but show that they want addicted gamers to play their games, they not only gonna be addicted, but they have to be good at it too, because it's usually some heavy challenges you have to do.

So Sorry if I hurt anybody by using noob, but you know I'm saying: Don't play Final Fantasy if you want to play for fun, because it's just hard challenges. (It's said many times, no jumping, no swimming ... the game is not made to be any kind of fun or easy)

Haha Square Enix are so genial, it's the perfect noob secure system ^^

I think + 5 levels more is a lot of levels, when we are talking a game as hard as FFXI to level in. Newcomers will more likely take jobs that easily get invited... um wait that's not so bad, because then we will have lots of white mages :D

No the point is, what's gonna happen with not so party affective jobs?

I would say that creativity seems to be missing in a lot of developers, the only reason why the game list have become that much larger is because, the companies are so good at copying.

But talking of FPS having the variety, FPS is sooo much more simple, that is also what half life showed us. The only differences you can make is: Different weapons, environment, walk speed/jump height and that's pretty much it(I'm making a FPS mod condition zero : source if you care, it will not be cs:cz as source there will be more)

But make a list of everything you could make in a mmorpg, go a head and blow you mind with thoughts! So the question could be: Is it possible to make any variety in this genre? Or maybe you are just waiting till it's not possible to make a new mmo.
hhm maybe the answer is to make a mmorpg with more need to make up tactics?

But you're welcome to wait for your half-life mmorpg, but then I'll write "waited in vain" on your tombstone. No if I become a developer some day, I promise I'll make you something good, because I make stuff with thought behind it.

Also I'm only waiting for FFVI because I know it will be a serious game.

In my opinion  Jumping and swimming is only for games where it has a purpose, like ratchet and clank or where it will help in combat counter strike. Jumping and swimming should not be there for fun, FFXI is a serious game and thats why you can't jump or swim. FFXI is a hard game and thats why all those wow kiddo types come and whines "this is to hard", "grinding is so last year" ... This is another Final Fantasy game, how many FF games can you jump and/or swim in?

Well it could be that SE would make it so that the character could jump every time it had to, that is seen before ex. FFX-2.

I think a lot of how you could develop an action mmorpg and when I someday have been educated and get to work for a company it's probably to late, there's not many possibilities to make Original games anymore.

Sooo.  I understand you're an aspiring developer and such but do a little bit more research.  The .hack team DID in fact make an mmo and it was on ps2 and pc.  Google a little more and youtube search just a bit more.  It was region specific to japan only.  Trust me and my friends looked into this because we're fans of the .hack series.

www.hack.channel.or.jp/fragment/index2.html

Have fun.  Maybe you can buy the server files from them since it did so poorly in japan and they shut the servers down.  Besided when developing a game for a company already created with legit code you would end up needing rights to actually produce and create the game.

I'm 17 and not educated, so I'm doing this for fun, well I didn't research it any more than this, because that would maybe make me change my already good game idea, and that could end in "getting tired of it" and then I start creating a new one, and as said I just got inspired :D

It's not any kind of serious, lets call it practice, and I just started.

Just so you know they tried this overseas and the overall reaction was so low it was canceled. This was on the PS2 btw.

Being a fan of the series myself I wouldn't want to see it in MMO form unless we update technology to where the anime stands, a virtual reality.

Heh, I joked with a friend about this, and the fact that the one they were trying was called "Fragment", and in the .Hack timeline, that was the first version of the game. I told my friend "If they release a full version several years later with the people who played in fragment getting special models" I will avoid the game, not because it would suck, but because I don't want to be put in a coma by some evil glitch" :P

All serious though, there was a group of people actually working on an MMO, but eventually they had to quit, they had parts of it, the engine, animations, graphics, all working.

Heh... an MMO based of a series of anime/games of people playing an MMO...

Also, that was going to be a feature of the .Hack MMO (official, not fan) was that your computer would be used as part of the server, and if I remember, you'd even be allowed to make dungeons in it.

Okay ty for the information, but what I'm focussing on is, how good am I at developing game idea's so please comment on my idea and not .hack/the world or what ever not related to my idea. Because I make up lots of ideas in my head and sometimes I feel like I want to see what people think of my ideas, so I post them here on mmorpg.com.

Just so you know what it's about :D

Before you start posting questions about "what ever" please read everything!

Many people might had this fought, and I don't know if it's already it's in development, but I feel that I want to develop my ideas. If people don't know .hack it's a manga/anime about a boy playing an mmorpg called "The World". There is already made games for the series, but they aint online and you can online play as the main character, aka it's just an normal rpg with missions and stuff. Well, the game does have features that haven't been seen in real mmos and they are realistic(most of them). btw I'm not a .Hack geek, it just inspired me.

One of the features as an example, is the battle fields, that you create by combining 3 words so you get a weird phrase (ex. 'dancing goblins' 'moonlight' 'hole') so 1 word can somtimes be 2 xD. Anyways every word means something, if it's gonna be a forrest, a plane, a old ruin or what ever. Then it decides difficulty level, element and wethere there will be a cave or not(explanation will come).

A dungeon is a labyrinth of corridors, where you need to find the door to the next floor and the room with the secret treasure, you meet a lot of monsters on  your way through a dungeon. There can be from 2 - 5 floors and there's 3 items in the secret treasure.

Well, I've researched on the job classes and think it's messed up, because of different versions of the game and because some where stronger than others. So I decided to "make" my own and still keep it fitting to the old story. So it's pretty much like it but with few changes.

Stats - phys = physical, atk/atck = Attack, def = defence, magi = magic, spd = speed, rng =range.

Twin Blade
This class has a small blade in each hand(daggerds, wolverine claws or knuckles), they are the rogue a like class, with high attack speed and mid-low defend.
phys atk - 2/5
phys def - 2/5
magi atk - 3/5
magi def - 3/5
atck spd - 5/5
phys rng - 1/5
magi rng - 3/5

Blademaster
This class uses swords and katanas, it's a damage dealer class, that might tell it all.
phys atk - 4/5
phys def - 3/5
magi atk - 2/5
magi atk - 2/5
atck spd - 3/5
phys rng - 3/5
magi rng - 2/5

Heavy Armor
Well originaly it's 2 classes I've put together: Heavy Axeman and Heavy Blade. It's a class that can use twohand sword/axe, it's heavily armored so it's ofcause the tank class of the game.
phys atk - 4/5
phys def - 5/5
magi atk - 2/5
magi def - 4/5
atck spd - 1/5
phys rng - 4/5
magi rng - 1/5

Long Arm
then this can use spear, lance, scythe and what ever weapon that is long. It's pretty much a mid phys class.
phys atk - 4/5
phys def - 4/5
magi atk - 2/5
magi def - 3/5
atck spd - 2/5
phys rng - 5/5
magi rng - 3/5

Wavemaster
Finally the magecian class, uses a rod, wand or maybe something more cool for higher levels. And then the player can build it up as damage dealer, healer or buffer. This class will ofcause be the only 1 who can learn all spells.
phys atk - 1/5
phys def - 1/5
magi atk - 5/5
magi def - 5/5
atck spd - 3/5
phys rng - 2/5
magi rng - 5/5

Well, back to the battle fields and the word combining. I've got the idea that you could make your own computer a server, so when you made your own map it would be run on your computer and if anybody would enter the same phrase he would connect to you. and then you are the admin on that map until you go out of it, so yes you would be able to kick people that you don't like out.

Armor System
Well I want to change this to, because the originally won't fid to an real mmo. Well in the original .hack game your outfit doesn't change when you equip a new armor, only status and skills (you get skills from equipment). What level character doesn't have to be higher equal for the character to wear it, so a lv 5 can have an lv 33 armor if he wants, and then there wouldn't be any meaning of giving the equipment lvs. And a level 1 character could get lv 99 armors from the older characters, that wouldn't work so there for I call it a mess.

So then my idea is that I will move the whole level system to the Equipment so your equipment has experience points instead of you, and the equipment will change from level to level(more detailed, more beauty and more cool shape). This would make a lot of thinks more easy, people would wear the same equipment for longer time and if anybody wants to start over he doesn't need to make another character, that would save more space of data.

Well I've many times been thinking of equipment that there was only 1 of. So the player who finds the armor will have a special value in guild wars or what it else could become good for.

I'll might continue :D

AND PLEASE DON'T QUESTION ME, ONLY GIVE OPINION OR IDEAS TO WHAT WOULD BE BETTER OR WHAT I CAN ADD!

Okay I tryid this game a long time ago, well to me it seem like Rappelz graphix with the guild wars bots to help you idea and Cabal online class system with a new battle style. So I don't get why it's so popular???

Anything later in the game is fun or what the hell is it?

It seems good of a free game, but is that the reason why it's the best game?

TYVM guys, I'm suprised, that it's a back up game for FFXI and I don't hope they will wait til it dies. Because FFXI like got a reborn, the sync really rocks. It could easily be in 2015 if they keep update FFXI this good, we have to put some presure on 'em so they'll release it earlyer, give us a date or something

Yea Ino it, they know about economic problems, I'm just so F**king impatient now, 10 yea between games is long time these days. But you don't think it would be different from the othere remakes of wow, darkfall and all those, I think it's something new, SE is usually original, SE is remaked by otheres, but they don't remake otheres.

Okay I Think I looked up everything I could find about this with google, or stopped at page 13 I think xD

Anyways heard that, it would be out in 2009, but also that we wouldn't get any info, before 2009 ... that's NOW!!! sorry just getting impatient. Well I just wanna talk about it, when I can't get any info on it. On wiki they say, that the engine thay use "Crystal Tools" can make action scenes like in Advent Children, but don't worry it will be Final Fantasy as it made as a FFXIII online game, the release should be same date. If anybody have anything please post, we can disguss anything ex. character create system I expect something special there :D

I'll might first answer tomorrow :S it's late here.

There isn't a clause about banning people for using proxies in the ToS, but I think there is a clause about SE reserving the right to ban your account for any reason they feel like. Remember that everything on SE's servers belongs to SE. You're more or less "renting" your account.

O.o really!, well Idc, I feel they treat me good and I know what they do, to make this game clean and fair. And what happened to the banned guy, was fair.

To you banned guy, take a brief and get over it. In the IT world shit happens, people shouldn't get angry because of it. Well I got a good laugh of it, just so you know it, you make you self look dumb, sorry.

Another guy angry about something and he creates a fight ... all of you act stupid and after that you won't admid, that  you made a mistake, because of the silly thing called pride.

Come on dude's, you don't have to write all the problems you got, not when you solve 'em you self xD

Cheer up and Have Fun plzz - Rune :D

Yep its true.  Me and my b/f was going to give FFXI another go since they now implimented this Level Sync thing we thought it might be easier to find members to party with since we used to sit around for hours getting no where.  Now around 2 days ago, during the time that me and my b/f were actually playing he suddenly got booted out of the game and got error LM-17 which according to most websites means a ban has been placed on the account.  I managed to contact their so called live chat support and got told the same shit I already gathered, that it was banned, and according to STF his account was banned because of improper obtainment of the trial key O_o  Whats mostly funny is that we did go via the official site, the only thing we did wrong was use Hotspot Shield instead of waiting forever to obtain 2 keys since it only seems to allow you to gain one every god knows how many hours and used a fake/rerouting email address because we didn't see why we should give a real one when we just want the damn key!  So.. I donno what kind of shit STF are smoking but if these are the reasons to why they did it then well they clearly have nothing better to do and still letting RMT run wild over innocent potential customers who just wanna try the damn game!   Oh and get this, chat support was uncooperative about doing anything about it and kept telling us to phone them, how does this make any difference?? Anyways, just wanted to get that off my chest and share this funny news with you guys, thanks for reading.

O.o you don't see why you got band ... and you even got 2 reasons for it, and you know that they're true. There are rules so that people, won't be able to use the game for there advantage, as an example: play the game for free with trials or spamming. Maybe you didn't want to do something illegal , but you could so there for you got banned.

Take a brief man, and btw people say that SE have the best service and support system in the world for mmos, and they put most work in it, so don't dis it lol you won't get anywhere. Anyways have fun :D

Well it seems clear to me why it have more popular, the problems that people have been talking about have been fixed.

The soloing and grinding problem = easy prey and decent challenge gives more exp

Oh xD that was the big problem, but the level sync is also a genial idea, I have had good use of it.

Well many people still means that the grafix is shit, but I know how to fix that, because FFXI has as standart the taxtures as low, but in the confiq you can set it to high and it will be great grafix ;D

Pretty cool idea, sci-fi mmo's should definately be like that, but I think otheres has the same idea. Something like that will sure be released in the coming 3 - 8 years, if not EVE will be evolved into something like that. it isn't unrealistic, but I have a question or 2, hope you'll answer.

will it be a level based game? How will the battle gameplay be?
I'm asking this because, if it' isn't level based, it should maybe just be simple first person shooter and the guns should not have to different damage points. If it has a level based system, you should might make it more strategic battle's like FFXII and more rpg, dice battle.

I have an idea you maybe could include in your idea, well it's to make it all more advanced.

It's simply a user-programming application, which means that  the user has to program something himself. it will make the user's able to adapt his gear to his/hers advantage. I'll start discriping an example, Imagine you bought your self a mecha, then you have to make it's AI (atificical intelligens or how it's spelled), you'll have to program everything, how it has to move it's arms, legs, it's scanning what it should say when it discovers something. You could program it, to hide perfektly behind a stone, so it can scan what the opponent can see etc. You could program it to, automatically point the weapon, in the direction, of an enemy, what part of an enemy it should hit, depending on what kind of enemy it is. Hope you know what I'm saying, it would be some kind of profession in the game, like how good you are to use the knife in counter-strike or the AWP and etc. I would like to help you with your idea, I'm myself a boy full of game ideas, PM me if you'll like to share and develope ideas :D

Oh, and a thing if so badly wanna see girls who looks like game charracters, look at the photos and sort them by rating, theres both fun and hot! xD

Or take a step outside and go to the mall.  You can take up a seat in the very center with the rest of the perverts.  Never know, one of those creatures of the female persuasion may approach you.

lol yea good idea, but I'm on this kind of school you live on, and it's out in the middle of nowhere, but there's a girl on the school I have a good relation ship with, and she's hot so I doesn't need anything :D
