Not even close.  The fact that they got an extra $5 million subscriber dollars just for a weekend fling of early access should tell you that even had it been awful and hellishly buggy (which it is neither) they'd be hanging around a long, long time anyway.

I don't know but it sounds like this is bad news for you.  Indeed if you are waiting around for all your guild members in WoW to come back because its finally your turn to spend some DKPs then it doesn't look good.  They may in fact not admit it yet but they've locked up all those great BPs, rings, swords and robes on accounts they will no longer play and not show up now to get you yours.  The good news is, you are now Guild Leader.  Grats on that! ~~

Seriously though, AoC is a terrific game.  The combat is a nice change and will only get better, the graphics are outstanding and the gameplay works really well.  Parts of the user interface is weak, imo, but they can fix that.  It'll will outsell everything except WoW and only because of the low PC specs of that game.

Welcome to 2008.  Next up, WAR.

Thanks for the great info!  I may give it a go later this summer depending on how AoC turns out.

I got a mammoth but let's face it.  After 3-4 months you'll be using your free mount about as much as you used your  'free" J-boots  that came with your  original  EQ2  account.   It will be fun for a while but not the end of the world if you didn't get you preference.

The pre-launch hype they've created is really quiet remarkable.   Again, I really admire the marketing job they are doing creating a false sense of scarcity.   Other publishers ought to sit up and take note.   If 1 million is more or less correct then that's a $5 million pre-launch bonus baby, too!  These guys are real capitalists.

It's been about a year since I last played EQ2.  I played some Tanks and Bard types up to max level, raided most of the endgame content thru KoS and the Faydark stuff and PvP'd a bunch.  Does RoK offer a lot that shouldn't be missed?  I had played off and on since EQ1 beta.  Are there good reasons to revisit Norrath once again?

I really wanted to love this game because of course I grew up with the books.  Gameplay is pretty dumbed down imo and that's the reason hasn't really taken off to a greater extent.  I thought it was fun for about 2-3 months and then the excitement really dropped off.  I stopped playing around Christmas.

The OP talked about how great it was to not need to camp things, hit the ground running and not need every piece of L33T gear to have a good time.  All true, but there really isn't much feeling of reward without some fun loot items and awesome but challenging encounters that demand skill and repeat attempts.

Still the shire was a fun newb experience, perhaps the best I've seen in any game, so maybe I'll jump back in again someday after some expansions and sharpening of the game experience by Turbine.

As far as marketing hype goes, I think Funcom has done a pretty outstanding job.  Of course the game will stand or fall on its own merits after Tuesday but judging from the beta vs. things like EQs original beta, or lately Vanguard's I'd have to say the product looks more than viable.

As for the "sold out" pre-orders, if you are not in the early access program, I'd suggest checking with your local retailers again.  I walked into Game Stop this week and the manager rooted around in one of the drawers and pulled out a pre-reg card for me.  I don't think it's impossible to get in still unless they've shut down the site that takes your $5 (If I had a site that does nothing but take $5 from people, I'd be hard press to shut that puppy off - I'd take your money right up until 11:59pm on Monday night!)

*** I stand corrected.  The early access is no longer available. ***

As a former Hz player, I was curious to see how the game would fair in a fresh review since I haven't played in many months.  Unfortunately, this review, while giving a fair treatment to the flavor of the new player experience didn't inform us how the game stands today as a viable MMO.  The fact this game was on the verge of disappearing last summer as it's owner was Chapter 11 is just one unmentioned issue.

The combat sounds about the same.  Unimpressive.  I know lag was a killer, making large events that the Dev's had planned almost impossible and the cause of huge dissatisfaction amoungst the players who left in droves a few months after release.

One really big difference compared to other genre games with Hz that the reviewer really ought not have ommitted is NO DUNGEONS.  Unless that has change recently, it was a disappointing part of Hz's development that dungeons never made it off the "to do" list.  Personally, I never felt like the content was complete on this game.  If you love a good dungeon crawl, Horizons is NOT the game for you might have made the bullet list, I think.

The other issue was housing/land.  As mentioned, Hz is a big time crafting game and much is focused on the construction of building plots where you can put up various types of houses and crafting structures.  How do supply and demand issues stand with the housing these days?  Did they add the promised new housing models?  I'd love to hear if anyone wants to chime in.  :)

Hz had a lot of potential. It's a shame to hear some of the same complaints on this thread about laggy combat and unfinished content though.  It might still become a very good niche title if the combat system was completely revamped and Istaria got filled out with complete content.
