I don't think the MMO genre lends itself very well to RP, unless you're good at ignoring people who don't RP. The old pen and paper RPG system allowed you to have good control over everything and only include people who wanted to stay in character. That's just not the case with MMOs.

I don't roleplay anymore, but even if I did I wouldn't choose to do it in an MMO. It can work, sure, but I just don't see it as the ideal platform for RPing. I play MMOs for the competitive/strategic aspect that only they can offer, just like I play FPS to get the other side of the coin. The term RPG as it applies to PC gaming has strayed pretty far from the original meaning.

I didn't mean that Black Orc was the anti-magic tank, I mean that it's playstyle is a mirror of the Swordmaster; they both use attack chains. KotBS and Chosen are both chant-based tanks, although the former seems to use buff chants and the latter uses debuff chants. The Ironbreaker has a "Grudge" systems that increases his damage against enemies based on how much they hurt his allies. The Black Guard has a "Hate" system which hasn't been explained yet, but it makes sense that it would work similarly to Grudge.

mythic really annoyes me with this tbh. the picture has been there for ages, and same with the "small" introduction video. still, over 6 months after there still isnt any descripton of the class, an no real ingame clips. i wonder what mythic is up to, eaither they are changing the class for better/worse or they are just trying to annoy people. perhaps they are planning to reveal the "last" 2 classes / info about them around the same time?   would really like to get a better idea of how the blackguard playes, so i either can decide to loook closer on other tank classes, or if i should decide for some healing ... and get a better look at those

If you want to know how the Black Guard plays, your best bet is the look at the Dwarf Ironbreaker. They will be different, but the mechanic of these classes should be similar since they're mirrors, just like Chosen/Knight of the Blazing Sun and Swordmaster/Black Orc.

Honestly, why haven't they made a sequel to UO? I would play the hell out of it if they did. I'd prefer pre-AoS, but even if it had item grinding I might consider it. I just can't understand why such a successful and critically acclaimed franchise hasn't put out a sequel. I guess they're too busy making lame ass Ninjas Versus Pirates expansions for the 1997 original...... *sigh*

Another reason they may have announced the delay and the CE at the same time is that the CE comes with an open beta key. Hence, players who are obsessed with WAR (the same ones who are most likely to buy the CE anyway) may not want to wait even longer for a taste of the game and so they have an incentive to preorder the CE.

In my case, it worked. If they need more time to finish the game, so be it. But dammit, I want to play!

It would be nice if some of those thingsare added as content, but I hope they won't be making most of it playable. The more races/classes you add to a game, the harder it is to balance them and balance is essential for PvP/RvR.

If destructible walls aren't feasible, so be it. But I would hope that there's more than one way into a keep, whether by scaling walls or whatever. It limits the strategic dimension of a fight when both sides are just butting heads at a single chokepoint.

I preordered from Amazon. How do I get to my downloads section? I'm not seeing it.

I expect the "Hate" mechanic will be similar to the Dwarf Ironbreaker's Grudge, as in the more you attack his teammates the more damage he will do to you. I hope (hope!) that Hate isn't tied to how much you hurt the Black Guard, or it will be a gimpy class. The only way to make self-damage Hate viable would be to give the BG ways to mitigate damage from teammates and draw it onto himself.

What I think is really sad is how people get so overconcerned about gender in a game. I'm not female in real life, but then again I can't shoot fireballs out of my fingertips in real life either. I guess that's why it's a called a game, eh? You know, make-believe and all that?

We as players cannot relate to casting spells and magic in real life. However, we can relate to masculinity, femininity, and sexuality. Many of our basic social norms carry over into the game, so........ Men "make-believing" that they are women is something many gamers cannot relate to.

Though apparently a few can for unknown reasons.

How is it so much harder for people to grasp the concept of a guy playing a girl in a game? You say people can't "relate" to magic because it's not real, but they can "relate" to gender norms.

Ok, by that logic people should have the same reservations about playing an evil character in a game. People can obviously "relate" to the concepts of right and wrong in real life, so therefore shouldn't they want to only play good characters unless they are a psychopath in real life?

As you can see, that line of reasoning doesn't play out. What I think it really comes down to is that our culture is intensely homophobic, so most men are in mortal fear of being associated with anything feminine. To alleviate their paranoia of the public perception of their own masculinity, they adopt a witch hunt mentality wherein they look for evidence of unmasculine behavior in others and thereby draw attention away from their own real or imagined shortcomings. This is the same behavior you see in imperialist societies--the native population is defined as Other and compared unfavorably with the colonial power, effectively making it a foil to validate the oppressors' belief in their own superiority.

I see this behavior for what it is and refuse to buy into it. The fact is I like the way female characters look, and so I play them. I don't do this "for unknown reasons" as you claim, but for simple aesthetic appreciation of the female form. If you'd like to go on pretending that I'm some kind of nutcase that "gamers cannot relate to," I guess that's your choice.

I'm male and I play both genders, but I generally prefer female. If I'm going to looking at a character for hours and hours, I'd rather it be an attractive one.

The last thing I want is a bunch of useless trinkets to gather dust. Now if they added a bride of Frankenstein beehive as a hairstyle option for my Witch Elf, you can bet I'd order the CE edition.

You explain the situation well, except for one point: not everyone does think it's a good idea to make gear an important factor. I would fall under the hardcore player category you mentioned, and I've always been against gear-based PvP. Even if you play 4+ hours a day, gearwars just makes the game tedious and shallow. When you win, you know it's the gear that secured your victory. When you lose, you feel cheated because you got beat by items instead of strategy or skill. Playing 4 hours a day will already give you the advantage of being an experienced player. You don't need leet items to broaden the gap.

Games like Guild Wars and Ultima Online (back in the old days) are proof that you can have great PvP without item grinding. Whether skill-based or gear-based PvP is better is a matter of opinion. To my mind, skill-based games promote better competition. I suspect items will be fairly important in WAR, but hopefully not so much that player skill can't overcome.

Give the guy a break. He's right if we're talking about the majority of players, and the majority is what matters when you're talking about balancing the two factions. It doesn't matter whether Joe Blow RPer is going to play a gimpy class just for kicks; most people want something effective in terms of game mechanics. This is especially true in the PvP community, where powergaming is prevalent.

That said, I don't foresee major class balance issues in WAR, based on the info we have currently. Most classes have a mirror on the opposing side, so if their abilities are comparable there shouldn't be a problem.

This CE package is so-so to me. The in-game stuff is okay, but not amazing, and I could care less about the external items. I suppose someone people will get jazzed about a comic or a figurine, but I've never been the collecting sort. My thinking is this: when your target audience is obviously PC gamers, giving them comics and figures doesn't make sense because there's no basis to assume they want these things. Some will, of course, but many won't. But they're buying a game, so it's a safe bet that they'll like in-game rewards.

More of the latter and less of the former imo. I'm not so sure I'd pay an extra ~$30 for a handfull of quests and new face skins.

I do not suspect that WAR will ever impliment housing.  Although I do think that a guild house could be something that will be worked into the game with a later patch.  Not to compare WAR to WoW because I hate doing that, but I think WoW will eventually impliment a guild house patch and I see WAR doing the same.

I am disappointed there is no housing as well.  If AoC had housing I'd be settling on it instead, but it doesn't have it either.

Guilds build cities and battlekeeps, beats the hell outta Guild Halls and houses in my opinion.

WAR should let guilds build battlekeeps and towers like AoC will. That is a bit closer to fitting the storyline and theme, right?

Been there, done that. It's called Shadowbane, and it came out 4 or 5 years ago. Owning a city sounds great, until you realize that you have to farm constantly for materials to build and upkeep, and get up at 3am to defend it against the zerg.

I voted Dark Elf, but I will probably end up joining whichever side needs players. All of the races seem cool, all the classes even. Based on the limited info I have right now, I think I'd be happy playing any race/class. That's a good sign imo.

Normally I hate Dwarves with a passion, but in WAR they have some of the most interesting classes. I'm even considering playing a Dwarf at this point. Bottom line, all of the races/classes are compelling and eminently playable. I doubt if faction balance will be a major issue when all is said and done.

You can only expect so many specifics during a closed beta. I'm anxious to find out more too, but patience is the key.

But if you think WoW is a better game, by all means...
