You can never go back ........in MMORPGs
MMORPG Game Concepts « Developers Corner 3/25/08 6:29:31 AM
You could probably set the difficulty on medium for the missions, grab any 8 players, and steamroll though them. The min/maxing that goes on in CoH is pretty much on par with every other game out there, and the same goes for group make-up in higher difficulty situations where an unbalanced team will fall apart pretty quickly. I was one of those geeks who waited in the stores till midnight to be one of the first play WoW, and in a way I wish I would have waited awhile. I honestly like vanilla WoW so much more than the current state of the game. The play experience now verses when it launched is just night and day, and it lost my interest even though my friends who started playing later on love it to death. I've quit a number of times, and have gone back each time to find it losing my interest once again. Eh.. Star Wars Galaxies.. yeah no going back to that. Wish the old man would have warned me when I unlocked after the second village phase, that piece of crap lol. But I think you're correct in general; even with all the bugs and missing content of the launch states of most games, they often play better (more fun) in the original state before dozens of balance passes are made.

Star Wars Galaxies: Instrument and Prop Colors Dev Diary
News Discussion « General Discussion 3/18/08 12:02:27 PM
Like a heal? hahaha Problem was there for a long time (post NGE) that two types of players were playing the profession.. people who only wanted RP, and people who wanted to buff friends or characters on their primary accounts. The RP crowd seemingly hijacked every concept thread that would have done something meaningful with the profession, and the buffers could care less. Whenever someone outside of the profession would give feedback, you'd have the overly vocal anti-combatant RP people telling everyone eles that they've been playing the profession for 'x' amount of years and the people outside of the profession have no right giving feedback because they obviously don't care about the profession. So these people kind of locked everyone else out, and kept the profession a concept that met their needs.

City of Heroes: Issue 11: A Stitch in Time
News Discussion « General Discussion 10/05/07 6:46:22 PM
I think that 2 years is a long time to whine, and it will be 2 years at the end of October. I think that is a very reasonable amount of time for them to put out something that isn't "half-assed", but obviously it is low on their priorities. I'm not whining.. that's the facts, and any new issues without villain epic AT is a failure to the player base in my opinion. I love combat, the community is great at times, but I feel let down with the attention that CoV has received. I was sold CoV as a stand alone game, but I don't think it's supported as such. You'd be upset if you bought a car from a manufacturer at the same price as another car it was selling, but the other car came with more options, and a better service plan. Course I live in a big kids world, and that's the bottom line. |

City of Heroes: Issue 11: A Stitch in Time

Still no epic villain AT? I remember the devs hinting about the issue a few months ago saying that it would be something that players had wanted for a long time. I thought it would be some kind of solid end game, or maybe something that closes the content gaps between CoH and CoV. Going back in time to complete story arcs that you missed.. eh I've made new characters before to accomplish this, and personally don't feel the need to take my maxed characters back to level 10 when the game is overly dry. The new story lines and powers sound nice, but I still have no interest in going back until I can play an epic AT on the villain side.

Who is excited with WAR because it looks like WoW?

How about popular music, or anything at the center of pop culture that's so dumbed for the mindless masses that anyone with a broader understanding could write volumes on "should have been." These volumes are often not written for reasons of futile knowledge, while the mindless masses put on their blinders, and get back in line with the rest of the sheep. In your opinion which MMO has the best GAMEPLAY ?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/02/07 4:23:20 AM
Honestly I'd have to say the most enjoyable gameplay I've experienced was in Vanguard with a Blood Mage. The flow of combat was awesome as a healer; the reactions to spells and crits, dps healing, having an offensive and defensive target, and a whole arsenal of things that I could do. Its too bad that other things killed the game for me after reaching level 50. I'd agree with CoH/Cov, and I'd rate combat as pretty close second, but everything else in that game became stale and repetitive after a while. Playing and/or leveling a Pre-CU Jedi would have to be in my top three. I really do miss the thrill of it, and I find it sad that nobody will be able to experience this ever again. From the rest of the games I've play in order.. WoW, Guild Wars, EQ2, EVE, 9Dragons, Ryzom, NGE SWG. SIMs Online (ok just kidding)

Sounds like a fun single player game, or maybe a Lan or instanced based.. no way Hogwarts could possibly be large enough as a persistent world to support 4500 people at peak hours. Just my 2 cents though. |

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes: Game update #2 Goes Live
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/17/07 5:38:44 PM
Originally posted by Deathstrike2 Complaints are rather valid considering that a lot of people bought the game because of the original vision, and now SOE has finished filling in the grave where that vision has been buried. Like there is a need for another generic MMO that steals its identity from successful aspects of other games rather then staying the course and being somewhat original. The game sold 200k copies at launch because of the absence of the stuff they just pushed out, but oh well, I'm sure its they think its that easy to borrow more subscribers along with the identity... mostly likely not. |

Most of my guild that quit right after the NGE are happily playing again, so it might be worth another shot if you're bored with your present gaming experience. I tried playing again right after Chapter 6, and I was happy for about a week. I don't think its a bad game at all, but its growing old and feels dated, and it just can't hold my interest.

When your love of MMORPG's grows stale...
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 7/29/07 4:28:57 AM
I kind of thought that even though most of my friends that I game with are also in their early 30's, and pretty content with gaming, that I might be growing out of MMOs. I've went through stages of hardcore, to casual, to very casual, and somewhat back to hardcore. I really enjoyed WoW at launch, but I couldn't stomach the idea of playing any further after playing through BC beta. Granted I've played in spurts since launch, but I'm very sure that I'm completely done with it now. Then there was Vanguard.. ouch yeah *cries*. Some of the features there were very cool, and I leveled a Blood Mage to 50, then quit because of the lack of anything meaningful to do. So I took a trip back to SWG, and I messed around with Beast Master for awhile. Then one day the idea of logging in and mindlessly grinding a pet to level 90 led me to the cancel button once again. CoV.. fun but nah. 9Dragons.. ack puke. GW.. can get into it again after all the expansions. Second LIfe.. fun when I have the creative bug, but I just can't go with the flow of that strange community. EVE.. I can understand why people like it, but it wasn't my style of game. EQ2.. too far behind friend that play it, and no desire to grind another character in that type of fantasy game. I enjoy the human interactions in MMOs, and strong communities, but the thought of leveling a character in another clone just feels like I'd be stepping into the next void.

SWG - The rise of Phoenix from the ashes!
General Discussion « Star Wars Galaxies 4/21/07 7:49:02 PM
If you are not into the high fantasy games, or stylized cartoonish games (cough), you'll probably find your way back to SWG sooner or later. I was in a rather large guild on Kauri, we still all keep in touch on our old guild forums, and the people that went back to SWG are there because they can't find anything else on the market worth playing.
I think the game has far more playability then it did a year ago, but its still light years behind everything else in content, rewarding gameplay, and now the overall game economy. While there are more things you can do in SWG, that alone doesn't make the game fun. This game really needs a strong community to make it work, and I hate to say that all the antisocialite PVPers work against this. Anyways, good luck with Pokemon Strikes Back... lol mount are Star Wars, but magical pets that attack on command are not. |
