I think SWTOR will be less immersive in some areas due to things like lack of day/night cycle. IMO it's a hugh, and I can't imagine a MMO without it.

That is a shame, though I don't think a day/night cycle is that important to me. I'll have to experience it to be sure though.

Another thing that I think will help you care more about the quests and what you're doing is the alignment system. Yes, Light vs Dark is pretty simplistic as far as alignment systems go, but the fact that how you complete quests actually has consequences (no matter how small) helps a great deal.

I do believe "What Would WoW Do?" is printed on the office walls at Bioware, and so I dismissed the game initially. All recent themepark MMOs look to WoW, but SWTOR is staring. And if there's one MMO I'm sick of, it's WoW.

But now I'm having second thoughts. You see, one of the main reasons I got so bored with WoW was that it turned me into an MMO-questing machine. You worked through your list of (daily) quests and signed on for random dungeon or battleground instances. It wasn't a world anymore, it was a lobby, filled with chores.

Here I hope SWTOR will be different. With all the dialogue voiced, the sheer quantity of quests will probably be lower. Combined with the story focus, we'll probably see fewer quest givers but with longer quest chains. This alone will help a great deal: the main reason I don't bother reading quests is that you get them 10 at a time, and they're usually one-off tasks with little to no follow-up.

Secondly, there's the fact that you get your own starship and companions/crew. I was actually quite pleased when I read about the Crew Skills and how they work. It all helps with the immersion, and it also means that a lot of the "chores" can actually be done by your Crew. Same goes for the PvP objectives, where effort was made to make them fit in the world. It is this focus on immersion that I think will help make SWTOR an MMORPG instead of just an MMO, which was really my main beef with WoW all along.

TLDR: It's not so much WoW's mechanics that I hate, as it is its lack of immersion. SWTOR will hopefully fix this.

Never forget though, that Blizzard too says that their racials don't / shouldn't matter for your class pick. Developers frequently underestimate the player's desire for efficiency :(

The DPS Warrior Priest is a very good class, but the DPS Disciple of Khaine is even better. And as people like to compare to mirror classes for viability, the DPS Warrior Priest quickly becomes "sucky", even though its only flaw is that its not quite as good as the DoK.

In healing it's the other way around, so that quickly becomes the only "viable" option for a WP.

Bottomline: if you don't care about faction at all and just want a self-healing DPSer, pick the DoK. If you really prefer playing Order, pick the WP and you'll still have a very good time :)

Raiding content (or perhaps endgame-content in general) needs to keep players busy, resulting in some unfortunate characteristics.

One of them is that it has to be hard. And because it is hard, players need to play as efficienctly as possible, revealing the ugly and boring nature of MMORPG mechanics: that wacky hybrid spec you've been having so much fun with just isn't acceptable anymore.

They need to take up a lot of time, you can't have people finishing your endgame content in under an hour. As a result, the schedule becomes more restrictive...you're no longer free to play whenever you just happen to have the time, you need to commit X hours per week or you'll never finish the raid.

It has to be repeatable. Better known as grindy. Developers will make sure you'll never get everything you want out of an endgame instance in just one run. Or ten.

I can tolerate decent gameplay if there's good lore, and I can tolerate decent lore if there's good gameplay.

I just wouldn't play a game if either gameplay or lore was utter crap.

Right now most of you have probably heard about Guild Wars 2 going with a more traditional "energy resource management system". Like mana in many other games, energy will be a resource that you'll have to manage over a longer period of time. Regaining energy is done primarily through the consumption of potions.

Now, I personally don't like long-term resource management systems, but I'm sure there are benefits to it as well.

Here's the thing I don't get though: potions. Why not an innate regen? What's the big difference mechanic-wise? Potions do have a downside over regen, and that is that they feel cheap. Chugging back energy potions by the dozen while you're fighting a dragon just doesn't feel heroic or interesting to me at all. So why have them? It's a given that players will use them on every available cooldown, so why not just make them innate?

These guys understand immersion. They understand what the RPG in MMORPG stands for. I want them to make a modern-day occult/horror MMO. Did they mess up with the launch of Age of Conan? Yeah, probably, and I hope they learned from that. But they also did a lot of stuff right, stuff I want to see again in The Secret World.

What nonsense. CoV might have flaws, but  "lots of bugs" isn't one of them.

Aion is possibly the most boring MMO I've ever played. Nothing about it is interesting or compelling. The ONE good thing about playing Aion is that it made me appreciate WoW again. I THOUGHT I was bored with WoW. But a couple of weeks with Aion and now WoW seems like as wondrous and fascinating as it did three years ago.

I really give Aion low marks for the complete absence of creativity. I never would have believed that an MMO released in 2009 would merely recycle ALL the most boring elements of previous MMOs without trying to do one single thing that is different or creative. Other overly hyped games like Age of Conan or Warhammer at least tried to add in some unique elements. But Aion only offered up the same familiar class types, same familiar combat mechanics, same boring kill and fetch quests, same pointless PvP - all of which was getting old and stale five years ago.

My wife got hooked by the amazing character creation and it ended up costing us $120 dollars and two weeks of boredom. I can honestly say that I have never been so relieved to un-install a game in my entire life.

I agree with most of this. Aion looks good and runs well (most of the time). The ascension-to-daeva thing is pretty neat, though it wasn't quite as impressive as I thought it would be. Still, it's cool to be an "angel".

But the rest of the game: very basic. It's like taking ten steps back in MMO design. I'm sorry for those of you who like this game, but I really hope it fails miserably in the west: I do not want other MMO developers thinking of Aion's "back to basics" design as a success. Let them go forward.

I cannot find any "sector 2" YouTube videos either. So far all videos I've seen of Fallen Earth have horrible AI (including one where the mobs were level 45). I only played in sector 1 myself so far, and of course the AI is horrible there as well.

So whatever, I suck at YouTube. I'm asking for your help: could you please provide a link to Fallen Earth combat where the AI is decent?

I think 1.3.2 is an improvement. I also like what they're working on for 1.3.3.

As for the forts, remember that they're coming back.

I wish more games would have official RP servers. I don't get why some people claim they don't work, I'm hard-pressed to believe they have first-hand experience beyond a single login.

Unfortunately, most companies do not think having RP servers is worth the hassle.

  • I loved the books and the movie, but I don't like the setting. It's the cliché fantasy setting.
  • I found the Dwarf area pretty ugly and uninspiring.
  • Animation and sound (not music) could be better.

Anyone pointing to a single reason for WoW's success is wrong

And here I thought you were going to question the "RPG" in "MMORPG".

I guess we are all disillusioned in our own way.

Aion's real grind starts at 30.

How's the story?
Fallen Earth « Fallen Earth

I really like story in an MMORPG. Interesting NPCs that give meaningful missions (and hopefully follow-up missions). I'd like to join a Faction (Techs, Enforcers or Lightbearers) and really help their cause.

Can I get this from Fallen Earth? I fear that because this MMORPG is more sandbox-like, these elements will suffer. That it will be more "guild" vs "guild" PvP instead of Faction vs. Faction. And that interesting story stuff only happens if you're part of some sort of Roleplaying-clique, who come up with their own events. While I like player-driven content, I'd also like a bigger setting to be part of (player-driven stuff usually gets pretty fractured).

It looks great, but it plays like WoW before the expansions: too much focus on groups, over-specialized classes with very little customization, grindy, etc.

Not for me, though I'm sure there are plenty of people who like it.

I love the character customization of Champions Online, but the performance is poor, as is the setting/story. Don't know if I'll stick with this one.

Aion lacks character customization (I don't mean appearance here) and plays very old-school (focus on grouping, relatively grindy and very specialized classes). Definitely not the MMO for me, even though it has an immersive setting.

WoW...well, I guess I'll have to keep playing WoW because all my (online) buddies are....
