I guess it totally depends on how you view and play MMOs. If you take a casual and utilitarian approach and just care about running dungeons like in all the other lobbyish themeparks, then yeah, it would make sense to get the largest pool of players possible so you'd get groups quicker.

But from the perspective of emphasizing the factions and the conflict against each other, and creating a self-consistent world? It would make no sense and they should be going out of their way in the opposite direction trying to make each of the three factions more unique, distinct and isolated from the other two. The VR tour of the other zones and allowing any race to be part of any faction was bad enough already in removing any kind of alien mystique from the other factions, this would just be jumping the shark higher and farther.

There are developers out there who do get it still...this is Mark Jacobs talking about the same concept for Camelot Unchained:

"...we allow Viking players to be more immersed in the actual lore of their Realm as well as to have some very distinct and different gameplay options for the class. This will, we hope, help build Realm pride and further differentiate the three Realms. We want all their respective classes to feel not only different from each other, but also very much part of each Realm and its lore, mythology and stories, even if things have changed a lot due to the Piercing of the Veil."

Is that you George?

After a while it becomes "not worth it" to group up with players who won't continue if it's not easy, players who are poisonous people and who need to be spanked, lazy players, abusive players, players who have no concern for anyone but themselves and will leave a group as soon as they get what they want.

And that is exactly why 2014 MMOs put more emphasis on solo play. MMOs are played by a different crowd these days and the communities that made group play more fun than solo play have pretty well scattered to the winds.

It's a very rare thing these days to get good PUGs together and it was the norm 10 years ago. Anti-social, selfish, just plain bad players or min-maxer wannabes with their recount spam, were exceptions back then, now they're the norm.

People gravitate to the fun activities in MMOs. We can wish for great group play like in the good ole days all we want, but as long as PUGs remain mostly toxic, people will just solo whenever they can't hook-up with the handful of trusted friends they can sometimes group with, and that, is the majority of the time.

Thanks to you idiots we can't have nice things, you know ... like an honest reflection of the community's opinion.

Multi-accounting ftw!

Lol @ playing the "that's why we can't have nice things" card...

But yeah, lots of new accounts just for this poll... loved especially the one above with 1 post to his name complaining about Turbine spoof accounts :)

A highly entertaining thread

The last sound card I bought was the Auszentech Prelude 7.1 back in 2007... and I haven't used it at all in several years. MB on-board audio chips have improved tremendously to the point that, IMHO, sound cards only make sense now if you have some special audio requirements (like maybe you do your own mixing.)

But as far as listening quality and CPU usage (which used to be a real consideration 15 years ago) a separate sound card is unnecessary.

You might want to have a look at this tom's Hardware subjective listening tests from a few months back:,3733-19.html

This is the bottom line from that :

"I sank $2000 of my own money into the DAC2 HGC last December, so I subjectively wanted it to sound better than everything else. Tests have shown that it doesn't. "

I wonder, how many people did Blizzard pay to vote for WoW? EQ and DAoC should be on this list. They may be old, but cmon some of these games are not even close.... DDO? EVE is good I suppose, but LoTRo was not a groundbreaking game, neither was PS2 or SW... what is up with this tally?

Not enough obviously.

Could have just given WoW the award and skipped the entire contest.

I mean is there any doubt that WoW won't win?

Well... since you phrased it that way, I can't resist a reply...

Yes, I doubt that WOW won't win :)

Why not invuln npc's on a PvE server?

I know, eh? It's not like they haven't had 10 years to do this... obviously someone higher up in the dev team thinks griefing is cute and fun since it could be so easily eliminated.

There's a flightpath every 100 meters and it takes seconds to fly anywhere. Point moot.

Exactly. A point that seems to be lost in all the "yay for vanilla" love fest. This changed big time in Cataclysm where multiple paths were added in every zone and continued in Pandaria and now in WOD: You're still flying everywhere, just not on your own mount.

I'd say, you should probably give up on this. Even under the strictest literal interpretation of the term "Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing Game" it's still subjective. Thus,  it means whatever suits a person saying it. I've watched the meaning of the 1st descriptor become meaningless. The initial term was "Massively" not "Massive". What's the difference? One is an Adjective the other is an Adverb. One would describe the game itself (Massive) the other describes how the game is played (Massively). But now, we are using the terms interchangeably so that any game that uses player accounts is now "Massively" And now even more recently, we've seen instances where even the 2nd descriptor is being watered down. As in the case with games like Hearthstone are being thrown in the mix. And While the game meets the "multi-player" term at a technical level, it's not the most appropriate use for this context. That being the context of MMOs. A 2 player game, while technical definable as multi, really would be better described as a 2-player, 1v1 or dual player game. That is,unless you have a reason to want to throw it into another category.

We are now at the point where you can 'legitimately' call any online game an MMO.

I dont think it fits what ever a person saying it means. Massive or Massively break down to the same thing, BIG. If you are finished exploring the entire game in the time it takes to finish a standard console game, 3-7 days. Then its not massive. With expansion you can one day be massive but at lunch you have a few instance hubs and some dungeons, you are not a MMO. GW1 fans may bash me for this but to me its like this. You ever feel like having Pizza and for what ever reason you dont have the time to go get one so you nuke a pizza pocket. Its a good fix but its still not the full deal.

I think you should go eat something now... you're obviously hungry :)

Once every genre tacked on some form of stat or gear progression, the meaning of RPG got diluted.

Once every game started (or more accurately, was required) to include some form of online play, the same thing happened to "Multiplayer" even in titles that were obviously not designed with multiplayer in mind.

Now that some games that are otherwise very close to mmorpgs of old, have made a feature out of the way some people play WOW (standing in the capital city outside the AH just waiting for some Q to pop) the whole idea of "massively MP" has also gotten diluted and seems to now mean massive numbers who are on-line waiting for something, even if the maximum you will ever see on-line together is 12 or 24.

And enter "action combat" and minimalist ability bars and the line between MMOFPS and MMORPG also begins to blur.

It seems to me that now you have to add some sort of qualifier to MMORPG--something like "traditional" or "lobby" or "action"--so that other people can understand just what the hell you mean by MMORPG.

Just a sign of the times and the mentality of 2014 MMO players: if it can be used to grief, it WILL be used to grief. True in every MMO. And yeah it's very common in every PVE server too.

Sometimes in fact I was voluntarily walking//fighting my way through it just to see more of the land.

I have done this too in the past but "voluntary" is the keyword here.

The temporary no-fly until level cap in Pandaria and this permanent one in WOD both feel forced and gimmicky to me... a way to artificially prolong the Xpac content... something that Pandaria needed but there is plenty extra content in WOD with the strongholds that makes it seem odd.

And it's not like this is a gameplay feature rollback to Vanilla: public flight paths were few and far between back then and that all changed with Cata convenience where many additional paths were added. WOD follows the post-Cata mold of having them all over the place as well... and there was a hell of a lot more about Vanilla that slowed the progression, such as much tougher regular mobs whereas the ones in WOD are very dense, to be sure, but laughably weak.

So sorry, not even "for the sake of vanilla nostalgia" makes sense to me. I'd much rather fly here too now that we've been used to flying for many years.

Archeage has the building blocks to be a very good game. Unfortunately that potential was badly mismanaged by both the developer and publisher:

It has a very interesting class system, but some of the skillsets are so much better than others that it seems 90% of the population is one of 5 or 6 classes.

It has open world PVP and factions... but it doesn't get used in any meaningful way and you mostly see just quick tiny skirmishes over hunting grounds or trade packs... most of the PVP you'll see is same faction griefing

It has a very robust crafting system... but it's grindy as all hell.

Those are the good points

The bad ones are that quests suck and the stories are asinine, dungeon instances are few and pretty basic.

I lost interest in it pretty quickly... a lot faster than I lose interest in most other MMOs.

But hey, it's free to try so see for yourself.

Most quest driven MMOs have some interesting quests, but TSW, ESO and SWTOR have many more interesting ones than the others.

The problem is that with the huge quantity of quests they all have, the great ones get diluted by the pedestrian ones and by the time we get to the level cap, what made the biggest impression on us was the over-the-top quantity, not the quality.

Going to be hard to say which is better/worse. Everyone seems to be using their personal feelings on a game to determine if its value. Just because you don't like a game or are just burned out on the game itself doesn't make it bad.

A little objectivity people, come on. Or the results will be worthless.

Were you expecting a scientific study? :)

Of course it's subjective... it always is.

Curious that you're zeroing in on three MMOs that were based on large pre-existing IPs. The mere fact that the companies decided not to create MMOs based on original ideas but instead latched on to pre-existing IP should be a clue that they were trying to play it safe and cash in on the IPs popularity.

With that in mind, why in the world would they take risks with new MMO system designs when the safe thing to do was copy WOW's proven formula?

Safe IPs... safe formula gaming... it's what I would expect.
