They still haven't increased the range of siege weapons?  Just tweaked damage numbers?  Oh well.

edit: I also noticed that they DIDN'T say that Bundles bought in their crown store would be non-tradable though they specifically said the other items are.  I guess they will have a type of crown-to-gold conversion after all.

why do seiges weapons need to be farther away... they were fine when I played... put them on a hill makes them go farther...

Trebuchets should have more range than what? 100 yards/meters?  If there was a "throw rock" animation or sklil it would be the same range as the trebuchets!

Look at this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vmmQVheKOk

Don't you think it's ridiculous how close the attackers have to set up their trebuchets just so they can hit the side of a wall?  Not to mention the catapults seem to have practically the same range.  Just looks silly and makes poor use of all that space that is in Cyrodilll.

I agree Trebs could use some range. To be far though none of the trebs in the video were at max range. Maybe the furthest one was. Players have been using trebs for two different purposes now adays. First because of their durability. The take a lot more hits than balistas or catapults do. Second players have been setting them closer and shooting them over the wall to attack the inner keep walls. It's a great tactic, more in line with the historical use.

As I type this the very reason why they may not have more range is because if they did, the inner keep would be able to be sieged without much risk at all. As it stands now you have to get them pretty close to the outer wall to do so which gives defenders a chance to burn them.

There's another reason why no one uses trebs at full range: security :)  You want to set them near the catapults so that the few people who are at the back trying to prevent stealth attacks on the players manning the siege engines can protect several of them at once.

I played Rift for quiet a while and even go back to it now and then. I like the game -- always have, but I would never dream of holding up their PVP as any kind of gold standard.

I don't play RIft for PVP the same way I don't play WOW or LOTRO or SWTOR for PVP. They are all PVE games with PVP-light tacked on. Of that group only LOTRO ever made a serious attempt to provide a 24/7 persistent PVP zones but that was their sort of goofy "monster play" thing. The other ones just created e-sport-like quickie scenario PVP and/or opened up servers where the players could fight each other in the PVE world and left it at that.

There are a whole pile of real PVP games where real thought and effort has gone into designing PVP you know. Rift ain't one of those.

This isn't pay to win.  You all need to re-adjust your perceptions on what pay to win is.

Can subs buy power?  If I sub and you do not, do I have access to more powerful gear with increased and better stats that are exclusive to subs only? The answer is no.  It is not pay to win.

So what if I can level 10% faster because Im a sub.  Is that one champion point that I may get 10% faster going to make a difference...in anything? No.  It isnt.  Does one paragon point make or break your gameplay in diablo 3? No.  If you claim this is pay to win because someone can acquire champ points 10% faster, I encourage youto check out Diablo 3's paragon system.  The increase in "power" is not noticeable point to point.  You only start to see an difference when you've wracked up 50 paragon points.

So by this logic, assuming you and I play equal amount of time and do the same thing, when I've garnered 30 champ points, and you have 27 ... that three point difference wont be impactful.

Get a grip.  It isnt pay to win.

No people need to stop clinging to the literal meaning of P2W and look at the context.

What context? Trolling and bringing this same tired old discussion that has been debated for years at this site to this forum for another spin?

That's the context of all "I want to play for free and I want everything" BS threads like this one.

Who knows?

But there will be a whole pile of new reviews from places that just cover consoles or just PS4 or XB1 games as well as sites that do individual reviews for console versions... I think Gamespot does this.

in case its not mentioned (just started reading), i hope customization/mount/pet items   from the cash shop are account bound and not character bound. Im sure as hell i wont be buying the same items over and over for each character.

Yes. All account bound. They go into the new account-wide "Collections" interface. They don't even take up bank or bag space any longer.

lol so in example someone who subs theoretically saves 6 minutes ever hour compared to a non sub player (mind you time actually playing and obviously not COMPLETELY accurate but a rough estimate ) and that's a huge unfair advantage? Have not been playing to many games lately but what it takes 30 hours or so to max out usually for you average joe? Saving someone all of 3 hours?

Nah the most important item is:

- Access to all downloadable content for the duration of membership.

B2P with a content subscription paywall isn't B2P, it's the exact same thing as the subscription model they changed from.

So we're getting Heart of Thorns for free? I did not know that... cool!

Nice & depressing article, well done.

Why would it be depressing? He's not saying the population is going to plummet, just the subs. As a matter of fact, while subs plummet, population is going to get quite a boost from both, former players returning now and then and new purchases from people who are now interested due to the removal of the sub requirement.

The article is just about whether there are enough incentives to sub once we can continue to play the same game we've been playing without subbing and zero penalties for not being subbed.

Don't let the reading comprehension challenged trolls in this thread get to you. The population is going up, not down... subs are a whole different matter.

If 10% is considered pay to win then GW2 is heavy play to win.

GW2 is B2P and doesn't require a subscription for ALL PLAYERS to get those bonuses, you must have simply missed that.

It's been a while since I fired up my GW2 account.... how do you get that list of bonuses?

Maybe the point isn't to try and get people from your MMOs community to come over and vote it up. But what do I know, heh.

I'm pretty sure that is exactly the point of these voting contests: to get more people to traffic the site and hope to increase daily hits. It's not a bad thing. If they only wanted to get a count of the regular forum members they could program in constraints like account age, last visit date, minimum number of posts, or my favorite - minimum number of stars. :D

I just can't believe we're doing it again after we did it in December. I think In February we should do the worst MMO awards. It'd be nice to see Scarlet Blade and League of Angels duke it out... especially if they have to wrestle for it :)

If the MH fans want to come here and vote up their game, more power to them. But it cracks me up that they're coming here to do it since if you look at the list of most popular games (based on unique hits) on the front page of this site, it has never cracked the top 10...  not today, nor this week, nor this month, nor in the past 6 months, nor past year.

Speaking for myself, I come here a few times a week to catch up on general MMO news. However, when I want to read about Marvel Heroes, I go to their boards, which are extremely active and informative. When I am on this site, I probably never click on a Marvel Heroes link or post.

I'm sure the official boards for all MMOs are extremely active and more informative than this site.

But we're talking about a poll that supposedly represents the opinions of those who come here... You don't see the humor in a game that not many people here show interest in getting 4 times as many votes as its closest competitor when all of the other 8 choices ARE in the top 10 according to the metrics that measure what the people here are interested in?

That sure is one hell of a lot of closet MH lovers.... or something.

I'm not super active on these forums, but I do have my share of posts, but I don't generally post or even look at specific game forums on this site, I usually come here for the general mmo discussions.  I'm sure there are plenty of people from all the games on the list that only every come and vote in the polls or made an account specifically for this poll.  I think it says as much about the mmorpg community that not one of the most popular games on the site seems to be able to break 20%.

And yet a quick look at your user profile shows me that you have contributed to unique hits for ESO, Shroud of the Avatar, WOW and Darkfall: UW recently :)

I mean... nice attempt at coming up with a plausible explanation for MH, all of a sudden in the past 24 hours rocketing past everything else by that margin,  but I don't think apathy from the real mmorpg.com community is it.

I'm still betting on the "or something"

That is my point though, I don't overly like any of those games, I just bought ESO, so I don't like it yet, but I am interested in it.  I really like MH and as you note, it isn't on my unique hit list, but it is the game I voted for.

Yeah. MH is not  bad game at all and I'm sure there are some legitimate votes for it from people who are part of this community... but 51% vs. 8% for GW2 and FFXIV? Sure... want to buy a bridge I have for sale?

I don't think we are really making different arguments.   I agree that the MH community has pretty much flooded the voting, that is obvious.  I think that the fact that the most played games can't crack 15% is the very definition of apathy.

Given that MH is @ 51 and there are 8 other titles there, 6% would be the average. Take MH out of the equation and you'd have several over 15%... see how that works?

As to your edit re: popular =\= liked, consider this... TSW is the highest rated game by users of this site @ 8.58 followed by GW2 @ 8.56 and FF XIV @ 8.52... MH on the other hand just cracked the top 7 today @ 7.93. Compare that with the % of the votes: TSW: not even on the list lol, GW2: 7.7%, FFXIV: 8%... MH 51.2 %...

Seriously man, do you really think there is a legitimate logical explanation for that?

The justice system sounds really cool. It should make the game world feel a lot more interactive, which it currently does a pretty good job with. When I first started playing I didn't take anything from cabinets, baskets, and chests because I thought, hey that's stealing and I'm going to be a good character. Later when I found you could only really get food and recipes that way I started looting everything, but it felt kind of stupid.

I'm glad they're making this change, but I hope provisioner mats and recipes aren't too hard to come by. I have a hard enough time getting the recipes I want.

I'm still too low level to understand what the balance and champion updates will really mean. I'm still trying to figure out how to put points into crafting while still staying viable as an adventurer. I'm going to read up on how many points are available and how best to allocate them for crafting and adventuring.

New for 1.6 in the PTS, chefs and brewers now sell just about any mat you need for provisioning, It's a lot cheaper to loot it in the wild of course, but it's a nice option to have if you have the gold.

I'm not sure if this is just a PTS thing for provisioning testing purposes since the whole thing just got revamped, but I hope they keep it for live.

Sort of reminds me of the recently concluded NHL all star fan vote where a barely known 20 year-old Latvian (ZEMGUS GIRGENSONS) playing for the worst team in the league (Buffalo) topped the polls by a large margin... way to go Latvia for voting him in!

I'm thinking subs will decrease over time.  The main concern will be consoles.  I'm wondering how the character port from PC to console is being tested and if a person will be able to go back to PC if they don't like the way their character plays on a console? Ports will probably end up a cash shop item.

the Diablo 3 character port works great, im sure the ESO developers can come up with something just as good.

There is no character port. There is a whole account COPY instead. After the copy, the PC and console versions will be identical including all gold, items, etc.

After the copy they each go their separate merry ways and both will be playable without one in any way influencing the other.

This was a limited offer only for those of us who had the game registered as of June 30th, 2014. We get the copy and the console version for the console of our choice for $20 as opposed to having to buy the console game for $60.

Sounds like you're saying a person will still be able to play on both systems.  I think you mean it's an account transfer.  After the transfer the PC account will be gone.

Yes. That is exactly what I'm saying.

Based on Skyrim sales, the console version will be over 80% of total sales, and likely higher.

Will they lose some subs because of B2P? Of course. But it won't have much effect on them, since subs are going to be a small percentage anyway. Let's say they lose 1/2 of the subs (extreme example), it might only affect the bottom line by a few percentage points.

If they had offered a lifetime sub like LoTRO did, I would have bought it. Now, after subbing since the beginning, I've canceled my sub. Why pay for something that is free? I'm not hardcore enough to care about a 10% boost.

Exactly. And when value is added to the game by way of extra content, I will re-evaluate what I do at that point.

There's a lot of fuzzy thinking in this thread. probably form the same people who believe that "Sub Worthiness" is a real thing instead of just evidence of muddled thinking.

I play what I like because I like it and want to spend my valuable play time there. If I need to pay a sub to play what I want, I pay a sub. If I don't need to pay a sub, I don't.

The bottom line is this. If it was a good value before the 17th, it is only a better value after. However, if you are not finding it a good value after, it might not have been as good a value before either.

Well I can agree with that part. The value for the same game is $15/month before March 17th. After that you get the same thing for free. Now that's what I call better value!

Paying $15/month after that (before any DLC content is released) is paying for something more than we currently get for the sub. It's not anything I'm interested in as I liked, like and will continue to like the game I'm playing without the 10% bonuses.

But your second sentence is where the shoehorning and spinning comes in: what you pay $15 for after March 17th is NOT what I paid for before - that game is now free. If anyone wants to pay $15 a month for bonuses and some crowns, more power to them,

But that means absolutely nothing with respect to the worth of what we currently have. That will become free on March 17th. I don't need any more than that.

I find quite a bit of irony in this article:

Paying $15 per month to play TESO = good value

Playing TESO + Paying $15 per month for added bonus = bad value

When the company is extorting the customer for access to their character, this is considered a good value. When the company allows access to the character for free, but sells additional bonus while using the character, this is considered a bad value.

Just think about it.

What's to think about? Before March 17th no choice - you like it? You pay and you play,

After March 17th - choice. You like it? you play and either pay or not... was that so hard?

If you considered $15 a month a good value for TESO prior to 17 March... why is it not a good value after 17 March. Has the game suddenly become less enjoyable, less fun, less entertaining? Has $15 become more difficult to obtain?

If you are not willing to pay the $15 a month after 17 March, I suspect the issue is that it was not actually worth $15 a month before... but that you had not really evaluated it recently, and were just paying out of a sunk cost fallacy.

You're over complicating it to try to shoehorn some pet theory into this. It's as simple as having a choice. When you have a choice to pay or not to pay you then look at what you get for your money since it's no longer a play / not play binary decision.

I like the game and will continue to play and if the sub ever becomes something worth something to me, I'll sub it then, In the meantime I just keep on playing and enjoying it on March 17th just like I was on March 16th.
