Thank god this wasn't yet another badly written essay on why all the new MMOs suck. Although... that crowd will try to turn it into just that.

And to those of you offended because you think he caled you an asshole. It's not you he's talking about - it's those other guys... it's always those other guys.

Oh lol another fail.

Well yes and no. It's F2P and it does have unique, interesting (and a bit confusing lol) character development system. It'll just cost you some bandwidth to check out. But yeah... not really a "real MMO" in the EQ, LOTRO, Rift, WOW, ESO, GW2 or even SWTOR sense.

Game is buzzing with new players everyday. Gameis a success.

I've been amazed by how steady the sales on Steam have been since the B2P and rebranding to ESO:TU. It goes in and out of the top 10 in sales constantly. Whenever I think it's out of the top 10 for good, it makes a come back in short order.

Old time players that don't constantly make new low level characters like I do to try leveling with different builds, probably have no idea just how crowded the lowbee areas are. I haven't seen it this populated since early release more than a year ago.

But are they sticking around?

Never played so i have no idea. never thought it would be my type of game so never tried it at all. Just wonder if they are trying the game and leaving soon after...or playing longer term?

That's hard to tell in a megaserver game that doesn't let you explicitly "travel" from one version of a zone to another. Some other megaserver games (like TSW for example) had a pull down menu that tells you which numbered version you're in and let you move to another from a drop-down list so you could sort of tell from that. ESO doesn't have that. The starter area could have 20 versions to accommodate the population or just one and it would all look the same to you. Having said that, the population density looks very good everywhere at all levels... noticeably better than it did last fall.

As to how many try it and leave it, I don't expect retention is any different here from any other MMO: lots leave during the first month and first three months as usual.

Another Couple questions if I may:

How big is the world in comparison to GW2/ESO for example, and how open is it, does it have portals/intrusive invisible walls.

What's the expected average time to get to max level or end of the main quest chain/get to last zone.

It's a lobby game. The game world is not open at all and you can't travel from one part of the world to another directky. You just go on missions from the central hub.

They really have the update options hidden cant even get to it from control panel. I had to search it with the new search then go to advanced so on to get that crap turned off.

You just have to get used to some new things,

There is now another "control panel" like place that should be the first place you look. It's called "settings" and you see it when you left click the windows icon on the bottom left of your task bar - it's the new gear icon there.

Click on that and you'll see "Update and Security" as one of the options. That opens up Update and a few other tools.

Yeah.. .it was my own fault for not living in the US and having a DVD drive that although it works 100% with Win 8.1, required no drivers other that the standard default Windows driver, ran the Win10 HW compatability app multiple times, my install would consistently hang at the same exact spot every time until, based on what others had tried on the large Reddit thread about this very issue, I disconnected the SATA cable to my DVD and it finally installed.

Yeah... 0 hassles must be the norm based on your large sample of 1 lol.

Windows 10 is more for people who are lazy and not into pc's. Itis bloated with apps that are unessary and resource hogging.

I tried TESO with win 10 drivers on for AMd 7870 crossfire, performance was cut in half making the gam e unplayable.

Bullshit. Windows 7 are for old grumpy cats who don't like change. See what I did there? I love windows 10 and I am definitely not lazy and not into PCs.there is no reason to use windows 7 over 10, 10 is better in every way. Of course if you are grumpy cat that doesn't like change... Let me guess you stayed on xp for years right?

I tried Eso and had 10-20 fps more on average. But then I don't have a shitty amd :D

I agree and confirm that my ESO FPS average also went up noticeably. However I did run onto two peculiar upgrade issues that seem to be affecting many so my advice, especially for those who don't enjoy troubleshooting is to wait a couple of weeks.

One of the problems I had is that despite the fact that the "create media" upgrade option is open to the world with no caveats about it being US only, it's localized to US only and if your current OS's locale is not set to US, the upgrade will fail with an unhelpful "Something Happened" error pop-up box.

And once you get past that, the upgrade is hanging for many at 25% completion / 84% file copy. It's failing for incredibly trivial issues: for some it's because they left an SD card attached for others because despite having very standard vanilla DVD drives, it'll hang unless you disconnect the SATA cable to the DVD drive.

Both of those happened to me.

In other words, the upgrade currently has several bugs that will frustrate you.

Once it's installed? It runs better than ever. I've had zero issues with the most troublesome games: Witcher 3 runs perfectly and even Arkham Knight (I was one of those who got the Steam PC version before it got pulled) runs perfectly.

It's a great OS... just hold on a bit before upgrading or enjoy your troubleshooting.

Is it people just being contrary because this board tends to attract wannabe internet pit fighters, or are lots of people really that naive?  It's disappointing there are so many authoritarians in game space that would argue for a corporation's right to free stuff at our expense.  Are you all for real?

I think most of the members here on this discussion have a firm grip on what they want. Either turn off the questionable privacy settings or just don't use it! Actually pretty simple and there are no deep rooted conspiracies here unless you want them.

It doesn't have to be a conspiracy to ring alarm bells. There is a lot of concern being expressed over the fact that it defaults to being intrusive. This quote from today's article on The Guardian says it best:

“Microsoft simply aren’t making it clear enough that they’re doing this, how it might affect you and how to opt out – despite chest-thumping, we’re-all-chums-here talk about how ‘real transparency starts with straightforward terms and policies that people can clearly understand’.

“There is no world in which 45 pages of policy documents and opt-out settings split across 13 different Settings screens and an external website constitutes ‘real transparency’.”

Thing is that we have been conditioned to sacrifice our rights to privacy "for our own good." Google and FB have been doing for years... not to mention governments.

I've even seen this default to intrusion defended in other sites on the basis that Google does worse because, you know, two wrongs make a right.

Even though as a rule I never let anything "express install" itself on my computer due to all the bloatware that typically gets distributed that way, I was actually tempted this time with Win 10 because I had had so many problems upgrading from 8.1 that I didn't want to mess with any customizations.

First of all I didn't want to wait for my reservation so I googled and found that I could upgrade immediately using the media creation tool... great! So I downloaded it and burnt it to a USB stick and started the upgrade. Somewhere after it checked and downloaded the updates it went into the full-screen preparing to install phase and it would stop at 20% with the now infamous and idiotic "Something Happened" pop-up:

Tried 3 or 4 more times always with the same result at the same %... went back to google and through a lot of searching found out that the workaround for this was to change the locale in Win 8.1 to US (I'm in Canada so it was set to that)... did that and this time it made it past that stage, rebooted and this took me to... problem #2.

After the reboot during the file copy portion, at exactly 84% of that and 25% total the installation would freeze... not even an unhelpful error message this time, just a freeze. Googled "windows 10 upgrade hangs at 84%" and ended up on reddit with many others having the exact same issue. I tried several "fixes" that worked for several people over many hours until I finally stumbled on one that seemed like desperate voodoo burried deep down (it has since been upvoted) which consisted of going inside my case and disconnecting the SATA cable to my DVD drive. Some had reported success with this so I did that and to my amazement, this time the upgrade finally went through.

So after several reboots while I kept my fingers crossed hoping nothing else would scrw up, I finally got to that screen that recommended I install using the express option... and I was tempted simply because I was afraid to mess with the installation any more than I had to after 36 hours of grief... but I didn't. I decided to see what the non-express was all about.

Man, was I ever glad I did. I couldn't believe the sheer number of "send data" back to MS, friends and others that were on by default. I had only seen this type of shit from MS before with a few components (media player) and apps (Defender) before but the OS itself also getting in on the act? Holy shit batman!

Now, I'm typically one of those who pokes fun at the tin-hat crowd (usually for good reason when they take things way too far) but hiding all this shit under "express install" and sneaking it through that way for the large percentage who will trust that Windows knows how to install itself best? This is right up there with notorious bloatware program installs that want to tack on things like the "Ask.com" browser toolbar and other crap on to their "express install." In a way I have that crap to thank for conditioning me to always be suspicious of "express."

And now, after being careful, I see this OP (thanks for the post) and realize I somehow missed one? And a doozy at that.... freaking torrent-like distribution of critical OS updates? Installed by default that way? Thanks but no thanks, I don't want anything to become part of my OS that passed through Joe down the street's sketchy dodgy computer.

All I can say is that it looks like the F2P world and mentality is alive and well in our OS as well now and that just like F2P games, the "F" comes at a cost.

Of all the prominent KS MMOs in development, this one, by far, has the greates chance of success, IMHO of course.

I keep getting more and more interested every day.

So Derek, let's assume all the things you are saying about scope creep and impossibilities are true... what's the solution?

What should Chris do with SC now that would fix this for you?

...what a horrible scam! How can they even call this "free" to play??? It's free to play if you like being beat with an ugly stick or eating copious amounts of buffalo dung! SOE / DBG assholes!

Question, why are you complaining about a game that you don't even like? lol

That was my thought too. I think he liked the pretty girl but she didn't like him back... so now she's ugly.

When I run out of deletes, I usually log out, really a annoying to have to wait to get to a place where I can actually start playing.

So... you are a gold farmer then..?

Either that or a serial character killer

I'm a confirmed altoholic and 3 deletes per day has never been an issue for me... shrug. As I've said many times, in MMOs there is no issue too trivial or too good that won't generate complaints.

Yes, communal aspects are dying. It's about fad's, fashion, and cliquing. If you aren't in my guild, DIE! If you don't have money for gear, DIE! If you are lost at a low lvl, DIE! It is becoming about individual aggrandizement, just like real life cultures the world over.

I remember in EQ how much folk just enjoyed helping each other. A lvl 17 stuck in a lvl 31 zone could expect help  (if he knew the language) from a stronger player who would actually take the time to lead them back to their range of play.

My elf mage lvl 40, I used to enchant lvl 7 Halas barbarians just to help them have fun as a dynamo in the first and second fields.

I was a lvl 12 Iksar seated at the fire at the entry to Halas learning the northern tongue and not getting sniped just for being a rival race.

I dropped games a few years and returned with a long running game based on faction war called Champions of Regnum. Still a good community, and the point was to hate the other realms, but it had gotten severely hostile even for players who were in the same faction. If you were low lvl and were getting ganged up on, the elite ran right by (on his way to the next invasion point), too busy to care. Maybe those games helped t0 shape the solo mentality?

i don't know, I think the world is way greedier and hostile then even in Roman times. We are politically correct, morally conscious, (but not active) savages, who care about the few around us and have utter contempt for outside parties.

It shows in games too. Both in the kind folk play the most, and the attitudes reflected on servers.

The fellowship, is the basis of the RPG. The company of companions who needed one another to face the odds.

We might think a guild is the same, but we'd be totally jaded,,,and wrong.

People have always said that the world is going downhill and that youths are worse than earlier generations.

I don't think that really is the case here, it has more to do with MMOers isn't the same small subgroup it once was.

When I started MMOs the players really belonged either to pen and paper roleplayers or serious computer geeks (in many cases both). Almost all players had a lot in common and knew they belonged to a really small sub group of people. And the most offensive players were shunned and couldn't get a group no matter what because the servers were pretty small and word spread so they were usually gone fast.

In games who might have millions of players from many different sub groups things are different, it is kinda like living in a small town in the middle of nowhere or New york, you don't have to like everyone in a small town but you do know people and you know who you like and who you should avoid.

Also, certain MMO mechanics turns players against eachother. Need or greed for example, a mechanic that did work in smaller guild but always made PUGs hard. Locked combat encounters where people killsteals. Stuff like that doesn't really differ much.

People are and have always been greedy, but most people temper themselves around people they know, particularly if they belong to your own sub group. I don't think greed have changed much historically (with a few exceptions like the conquistadors), people just think it is easier to get away with being jerks in larger groups where noone knows them.

That's only true if the mechanics in the game are developed that way... in a way that makes asshattery possible. Well designed modern MMOs are not designed in a vacuum that ignores anti-social behavior: individual RNG loot drops are now common and do away with the FFA or need/greed roll of olden days, exclusive mob tagging has largely gone the way of the dodo, non-competitive instanced resource nodes are now common...

And beyond that, for several years now different developers have flirted with the idea of significant community events, such as the rifts in Rift or events in GW2 for example, being a large part of the game play. And I say "flirted" because none of them yet have made it THE core PVE mechanic and let the game live or die based on that. They are all still relying on the traditional crutch of letting you play a single player game that is virtually the same for everyone, with quest NPC re-spawning etc., in an MMORPG ignoring the MM. And even GW2 only does their community events half-assed with most of them being a predictably repeatable loop that only works as a story element if you do it once and then move away from that area.

The technology and design ideas are there to be used by anyone willing to do so.

Oh so just unprincipled... so much better lol.

Your thread that got locked gets locked everywhere all the time because it typically devolves into "you're an idiot. you deserved it" vs. "all mods everywhere are nazi hall monitors"... add to that it being yet another thread for the SC faithful to misdirect SC concerns to DS attacks and you have your reasons... no financial considerations required.

I posted about it weeks ago too - it is specially annoying because it reformats the vertical page too and can make you click the wrong thing easily. Now I tend to ignore this site from my iPad.

Lol... DS must have really hit a raw nerve judging by how the SC cultists are still trying to dredge shit up/

DS kicked another hornets nest again, and now the hornets are swarming and stinging again.

He keeps doing this you know, this is no where near the first time. He has a huge history (easily researched if someone cares to google it) of attacking critics and pretty much anyone that doesn't kowtow to him and his supposed greatness.

It seems that he replies to so many criticisms or complaints with such venom and so quickly one has to wonder if he actually sleeps, or possibly if he might be a script bot designed to troll the net and make vicious replies.

Any problem with any project he's on, and he always blames everyone else. (Or at least I've never seen a post where he did admit to goofing up, and unfortunately I've seen WAY too many of his posts.)

So it boils down to DS trying to start another shitstorm, only too many people are wise to his antics and are redirecting the fan towards him this time. Nobody likes to be attacked, especially by someone like him.

I know all about DS's history and the infamous usenet flamewars. I've been following his ideas (not so much the outcomes lol) since he first talked about BC3000 way, way back. I need neither history lessons nor education about him. And I have also followed Chris Roberts for many many years and played his old games.

And all of the above means nothing in the context of DS raising valid concerns about SC nearly a month ago and the fanboys ignoring the concerns and starting a new campaign to go after DS instead as if destroying him would in any way make the SC concerns go away.. and the attack DS campaign just carries on and we're supposed to not identify it for what it is?

The cultists should take a page out of the cult leader's manual and do what he does: ignores DS. He doesn't even mention his name while doing damage control by addressing the concerns with new announcements, new schedules and reviving the FPS module from delayed "because we have standards and don't want to show you inferior modules" (and yes, I'm paraphrasing) to "we changed our minds, we're going to show it to you soon."

Those are the real SC issues, not all of these peripheral reports about DS's game by people who have absolutely no interest in that game but are well-known SC fans. It's just more "ignore what DS said...look at him instead!" misdirection BS.
