Preview the different ship lines, see which you like looking at the most.
Mission Running -> Frigate, Cruiser, BC & BS
Trading#1 -> Industrial/Freighter
Trading#2 -> Covert Ops (T2 Frigate), Transports (T2 Industrial)

Minmatar ships require more skill training in multiple areas than the other 3 subraces
Minmatar - Projectiles, Missiles, Drones, Speed & Armour & Shield Tanking
Gallente - Hybrids, Drones, Armour Tanking
Calderi - Missiles, Shield Tanking
Amarr - Lasers, Armour Tanking, (1 drone cruiser)
The Gallente Battlecruiser "Myrmidon" gets an armour tanking bonus (armour repair boost) yet has an amazingly strong shield tank, just pointing this out to show you how versatile the ships can be.
Drones - High
Hybrids, Lasers, Projectiles - Medium
Missiles - Low
Shield Tanking - High
Armour Tanking - Low
Speed Tanking - Medium
There are no pure Low/Low ship options. Most races have at least 1 ship that has a split turret/missile loadout.
Minmatar are the most versatile when trained to a resonable level, and have fewer problems crosstraining.
But as you seem to be interested in min-maxing
Amarr - Lasers dont run out of ammo.
Battletech or Mechwarrior or Mekton
A Cyberpunk/Mekton hybrid would be sweet, especially as they shared the same FNF system.
The Sonya Blue Novels .... by nancy Colins was a really cool trilogy .. (Troll Hitmen were described wonderfully :p)

If you just want base management & combat, then any of the games mentioned already will be good value for money.
XCom series (I didn't like the UFO series as much), Mech Commander are older titles, but were good at the time.
Just hit an online store like Game, and browse through the RTS section, see whats available, check a few write ups and then make a self informed decision.

If they were really after serious pew-pew action to wage war upon evil botters..... then they would head to the Drone Regions .....
where all the Macro-Ratting Bots live.
But wait ... Nooooooo teh Drone Regians are 0.0 space, thier too scared to go there, someone might hotdrop a Cap Fleet on them and thier KB would get a loss, unthinkable.

Like all small minded spineless retards, they excell at abusing the playing experience of those that "stand no chance against them in combat", but they are very quick at running away and crying for mummy to help them if anything resembling a close fight even so much as looks at them.
Eventually they'll reach puberty and develop a brain, and some real balls.

Most people live in a world where actions have consequences, and due to social conditioning expect the same to happen in a makebelieve fantasy gameworld aswell.
When a game mechanic works against the majority of its playerbase haveing fun and being entertained, it's not going to last.
For a casual 30-90 mins of playtime, it's actually not that bad.
The environments are nice, though Character cretaion is limited compared to other newer games (it's very easy to see 'your' face on another toon :P)
The Dungeons encourage Team Play through bonus areas that need different classes to open.
Yes it can get very grindy, but ALL MMO's feature grind as a core component of thier gameplay, so it's nothing to especially complain about here.
The cashshop contains both 'Meh' & 'Ooh' items. Cashshop points can be slowly aquired even on a free account just by playing, yes it's a slow process for the point gain but it is possible.
The only downside is for those used to the Pen & Paper version is that Rogues are built wrong in the game, with both Intelligence and Wisdom far exceeding Dexterity in usefulness to your stat assignments.
It's not a terrible game.
But it's not an incredibly brilliant game either.

It's starting to look nice .. Graphics look good, combat seems to be nice and smooth, and very flight-simmy.
And what's even better is we are getting a choice in available playstyles ..
all heading in different directions.
I call it a win-win scenario for us space fans :D
There are plenty of open planets, mostly in 'out of the way' areas ..
Players in NPC & Player corps can use this feature.
The planets in Highsec, Lowsec, 0.0 & Wormholes are all available.
Planetary Installations cannot be attacked yet, that will change when DUST is released, There will be a few more additions in later expansions that will increase the Eve side of things, whilst giving the future DUST players something to fight over.
You can manufacture POS Fuel, Tech 1 Construction Components and a few other basic commodities right now.
I liked the idea of Eve more than I enjoyed the actual game.

PvE in eve isn't like PvE in other MMO's, I'm guessing you already realised this though.
Progression via Agent Missions (they are pretty much the same as quests in WoW/EQ etc) doesn't progress your character, agent rewards are ISK, Loyalty Points and Standings.
ISK and LP are just assets, Standings just let you talk to more important Agents who give higher rewards.
Character Progression in eve comes from 2 sources
Skill Point Acumulation -- Skill Points enable you to do 'stuff' in Eve, many tasks can only be done with SP invested in certain skills.
Playing Experience -- Trading, Missioning, PvP etc all get easier the longer you have been doing them, Time Spent gives understanding of the base mechanics of the activity you pursue.
If you havent done them, I recommend completeing ALL the tutorial missions
Combat, Industry, Exploration etc
They will give you a better overview of most of the activities available in Eve. With that improved overview it allows you to better determine which direction you wish to follow.
You need to specialise in 1 area FIRST, and then diversify into a 2nd or 3rd much later.
Eve has 28 years worth (yes 28 REAL TIME years) of available skill training.
Eve allows you to do anything or fly any ship, this makes planning VITAL.
Eve's "Eve has no endgame myth"
Eve infact has multiple endgames.
You start out flying a frigate, an Interceptor or Assault Friagte (Tech 2 ships) are 2 of the 4/5 frigate endgame content items.
Cruisers, Battleships, Mining barges all have thier equivalent advanced hulls aswell
L5 missions are PvE endgame content (though the latest patch seems to forcing people into L4 missions for endgame stuff)
0.0 (nulsec) life is endgame content
Eve requires a fundamental shift in playstyle when compared to standard XP driven models.
Eve is a freeform sandpit
The developers have given us a shovel
It's up to us, the players, to provide our own bucket.

He, and people like him, are set thier narrow-minded rosy tinted subscription based worlds.
To them if your not paying a subscription then the game is shit "because your not paying a subscription".
Centuries ago everyone believed the world was flat, and Sun orbited the Earth .... They will clue up eventually or just die in ignorance ..
Besides you are missing the plus point .... He and people like him will NEVER EVER play the game.
Just think how much more enjoyable our time on the servers will be because of that.
Atlantica Online is quite good at showing how things are done ..
There are the usual quests for progression .....
But there are quests that cover other aspects of the game like (stuff that most MMO's take as "basic known things" )
It's different to most other MMO's, with a turn based (timed) combat system and a squad of upto 8 companion's.
There are more than 8 Mercenary types, so building a full squad leaves plenty of scope for your own choices.
Graphically it's ok, character creation is very simple, community is helpful and generally nice.
It's F2P, with possibly the most 'gamblers anonamous' inducing cash shop going, but you can can progress to max level without using it.
Microtransactions arrived a while back, while you were sleeping through your 50 levels in WoW ...
Microtransactions are here to stay, whether you like it or not.
Whining about how much you think the F2P model sucks is like pissing into the wind, during a hurricane.
As a consumer you have absolutely ZERO chance of effecting change on this.
The future is only rosy from a publishers point of view.
SP/online MP games are just as vulnerable, not even consoles are immune anymore, there are a few publishers using it in thier products already.
Publishers have already realised they can make more $ from microtransactions than they can from fixed monthly subscription models, and publishers are only interested in how much $ they can squeeze from the gaming population.
