I know right?...... It's like pixels are real things.....

some people think it's contagious

that playing a 'gay guy' will make them gay

stupid is weird like that

It's a game full of sociopaths, bottom feeders and mentally ill with a god complex. Slowly turning on themselves out of sheer boredom because the game at it's core is rotten as is the player base.

Your Opinion is a little short on accuracy.

And by 'a little' I actually mean "a metric fuckton"

Is Eve a harsh, unforgiving and uncaring environment ?

- Yes, yes it is.

Are Eve's Players Sociopaths because they enjoy playing a harsh, unforgiving and uncaring game ?

- No, no they aren't.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy playing a game. After all, we all play games to have fun.

The tl/dr is "Eve isn't a game for everyone"

It's frequently mentioned that eve has a 'step learning curve' .. there's even a rather amusing graphic for it.

Most people mistakenly believe that the learning curve mentioned relates to the mechanics of eve's game play.

It doesn't.

The systems and mechanics in eve are actually quite straightforward and simple to understand.

The 'learning curve' refers to the mindset needed for eve.

When you undock you are a valid target, this is the part that almost everyone fails to understand.

Eve is a pvp based game that has elements of pve.

The [undock] button should read [I agree], and it should have a tool-tip that reads 'There may be explosions'.

Almost everything in eve is a tool for you to use to have fun :-

Your Clone - is just a tool

The implants in your clone - are just tools

The ship you fly - is just a tool

The ISK in your wallet - is just a tool

The ship modules in your hanger - are just tools

In eve, tools are an expendable resource, they are disposable.

I hope you find another MMO to play that meets your requirements for 'a fun experience'

but you may find that experience to be a shallow one, that is ultimately unfulfilling.

There are a large portion of gamers who play these games who grew up on Microsoft Flight Simulator.  That is a simulation.  Where the ingame cockpit looks exactly like a real world planes AND the plane handles as close to real life as possible.

Games like that are considered simulators.

This game is an arcade game.  It's easy to jump right in and play and does not have a learning curve, despite what the author says....well, not to seasoned flight simulator veterans.

And yes, people are elitist about it.  Fans of actual flight simulators look down at games like Elite.

I am not saying it is a bad game, but it is not a Simulation.

please tell me about your real life space flight experiences ....

oh wait .. we don't have any yet.

It uses a Newtonian Physics model, thus simulating what it would be like to control a vehicle in space ... sounds like a simulator to me ....... but hey, what do I know?, i'm not an astronaut or astrophysicist.

My first MMO was Anarchy Online

That was back when failure (mostly Death) had consequences, you lost XP and thus your time investment.

It was also when the game was highly skill based, a feature that changed gradually over each expansion towards a more Item Based feel.

These days I play Eve, because CCP have remembered that it's the consequences of failure that are important.

Timmy is not a special snowflake, Timmy came last and therefore gets no prize.

Atlantica Online is reasonably okay as free to play games go

it's turn based combat, you have your main + 8 mercs to fight with, there are more than 8 merc types in the game

the cash shop is a pig however, but you can avoid it

The Secret World is reasonably okay as well

combat is a little clunky

but your free to develop your own individual skillset to play with.

I admined on a merc/diku mud where things were a little more relaxed

did the usual zone creation, both original content (the Vishna'ak say 'Hi') and porting decent zones from other muds

also worked on system tweaks and game enhancements with the coder, those discussions were fun

otherwise I was usually just creating chaos, didn't hand out items, people needed to get those things themselves, but regularly ran creature invasions of random zones. could do that as often or as little as i liked

it was more fun though to load in a bunch of weak mobs, then edit one or two on the fly to turn them into fearsome engines of death & destruction, and then sit back and watch the carnage :D

the MUD days are over really, the world has moved on.

I played Elite on the BBC back in the day

and then Frontier on the Amiga ...

Ive always thought of Elite as a Newtonian Physics based Space Flight & Combat Simulator

where within that simulator you were free to trade, fight as a good guy or a pirate.

Very different to EvE ... which is a good thing (and yes, I play EvE)

and I hope that that trend continues, SG:E & DP both failed, sadly. I hope E:D doesn't.

I played Atlantica Online for a little while

It has a cash shop, a shop that sells items that have a clear advantage over ingame items

There are questing areas that require pvp score to enter

There were 2 types of pvp fight, cash shop items enabled (shop buyer wins easily), cash shop items 'capped' (shop buyer not guaranteed a win)

Eve just has plex

You can use the Plex to short-cut the usual real time based training system

You can buy a character with the skill-set you want (without spending 2 years training those skills yourself)

You can use that plex to fund a shiny bling-fit pirate battleship

neither option gives you an 'I win' button in eve

having the right skills helps, sure.

having the game mechanics knowledge is better

having 'friends' along to help helps more ..

can isboxer work ok in pvp ??

don't know, ive never used it, but from what ive read about it's usage I'd say it has some limitations

it broadcasts key commands to multiple accounts .. which means each ship in your fleet HAS to be identically fitted

each ship locks identical targets, points the same target

that means you have NO flexibility, no ewar coverage of the whole field

your fleet has a good chance of dyeing.

The ultimate evolution of this game will be when it becomes fully integrated into EVE-Online.

Imagine clone-jumping into a fleet carrier, putting on your VR headset and then launching a fighter from the carrier...

Sadly it wont work.

For a good FPS game you need a decent server tick rate.

EVE-Online has a server tick rate of 1

In comparison BF4 uses a server tick rate of 10, this is also a low number due to the cross-platform nature of the game

In comparison again, Counter Strike Servers can be set to run with a tick rate of 33, 66 or 100

with 66 or 100 rates giving a much better player experience.

As a stand alone game set within the eve universe Valkyrie has good potential

but technology restraints will force it into the stand alone role.

Rule Two. NEVER undock what you can't afford to replace.

A better Rule 2 is - Never undock in what your not prepared to lose.

they could be rules 2.a & 2.b  :D

non-consensual pvp is a core design element of the game, that's not going to change at any point

by clicking the [Undock] button you are essentially saying "I agree" to the statement 'Your ship might explode!'

One of my roles for my Corp is Recruitment Officer, so I'm quite frequently lurking in one of those listed newbie systems.

Interesting thread.

However it is a little light on factual information, but very heavy with anecdotal theory & rumour.

So here's some facts.

CCP's general overview on griefing - > https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Griefing
CCP's stance on newbie griefing -> https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Rookie_Systems

So contrary to your opening statement with regards to CCP's blasé attitude towards new players being victimised, CCP actively monitor these systems and enforce sanctions on people griefing in them.

Yes, griefing occurs in Eve
Yes, CCP largely encourage it as an aspect of emergent gameplay
Yes, EVE Online is not the right game for everyone to play

explains the asset write-off given in the last financial summary

some eve fanatics were hoping that it was DUST or Valkyrie, but it would appear not.

Actually space in eve is like 'a pool of gravy' as it resists the forward thrust of your engines

turn em off and you stop

no Newtonian physics in eve, move along space-flight-sim purists you won't like it.

Ok.

TSW isn't the perfect mmo, but then which one is ?

I've played quite a few mmo's over the years, and TSW has something that none of the others had.

Atmosphere

I had never experienced the feeling of "I don't want to do the next part of the quest, bad things will happen if I do"

until I played TSW.

The new loot system is great.

I almost never see a Strength/Dexterity item anymore whilst running around with the wizard.

Items I find are usually beneficial to the class I'm actively playing.

I can actually solo Act IV (torment 1) now, where before Normal mode was impossible.

The best part, I paid nothing extra for this content access.
