EVE Online: Summer Expansion, Odyssey, Coming June 4th
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 3/26/13 6:59:12 AM
WiS hasn't been totally abondoned. It's just been temporarily suspended, for a few years.
The summer patch should be interesting, hopefully they will release Medium sized tactical rounds around that timescale aswell. The horrible scanning interface currently in use is what put me off exploration, even though I joined a wormhole corp :P, so a change there is very welcome. |

[Column] General: An Episode of Frustration
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 3/16/13 1:58:18 AM
I never pre-order anything. I wishlist it on steam, and then wait for the price to drop in a midweek/weekend sale.
On the point of legality and ownership, I am purchasing a PRODUCT. I very much doubt that any EA employee/representative still owns the very first car they purchased. If I am, as they maintain, purchasing Intillectual Property ... wheres my f%^king source code on the damn disk, because I can't find it. |

[Column] General: The Case for Never-ending Progression
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/17/13 2:19:34 PM
The most fun I've had in games with an rpg theme are games like Sacred, Diablo 1-3 & Torchlight II, co-op modes with a Hard Core/Permadeath option.
The chance to lose everything including the character itself and not just the stuff being carried/worn, made them more enjoyable in a counter intuitive way. MMO's general approach to death & respawning just turns it into a 'Meh, whatever. It's not important' moment. So this would just make levels just as meaningless.

so thats just going to leave you with sandbox style games but you didnt like the sandbox when you played in it, as stated in your OP.

[Column] General: How Far is Too Far?
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 12/18/12 11:18:59 AM
Atlantica Online uses (or used, it's been some time since i played) a 'roulette' purchasing system
1 really nice item, 1 ok item and a dozen different crap 'regen/license' items .... most of the time you got the crap 'regen/licesne' item.
It's that route that I object to Fine, sell the "Uber Sword of Ultimate Doom" for $ but when one person can spend $50 and get 5 of them, and you can spend $500 and get 0, it's in my mind fraudulent. and yes i know, these companies have highly priced lawyers who say it's a valid business tactic but are these companies also paying the relavant 'gambling taxes and licenses' in the various countries they operate in ? because i seriously doubt it.
If a game is worth playing, people will pay subs. people won't pay subs for a substandard contentless rehash of yesterdays flameofthemonth system but right now as i look at the huge list of games in development or that have released recently they are for the most part substandard contentless rehashes of "games of last tuesday!!"

What is it about EVE that keeps people playing?
Jita (General) « EVE Online 10/21/12 11:49:36 AM
The lack of Elves, Dwarves, Orcs & Gnomes ..... and Pandas The lack of restrictive profession roles (which is also the same reason that makes some people NOT want to play Eve)
There is only 1 Race split into 4 Sociological/Political Factions You can Create a character from Faction D, fly the ships from Faction A, and equip the weapon types from Faction C, if you want to.
It's the last part thats the really important part. It's not what the game design lets you do, it's doing what you WANT to do that generally keeps most people playing. |

What game did you buy your first video card for?
General Gaming « General Discussion 10/13/12 11:49:34 AM
I can't really recall the game at all, it might have been doom
but i remember the PC (mostly) 486 DX4-100 cpu, 8bit Soundblaster Card a vga card (forgot what, how much ram)
got a voodoo 3d accel (with passthrough) cable for it .. all hooking up to an awesome 14" CRT monitor
apart from the screen size, my keypadless (nonesmart) touchphone is more powerful |

Then theres the UFO series made by czech dev-company that werent too bad either |

I'd like to agree with you, but I can't, because I feel you've missed a very important point. It's not just the games/genre that have changed, the players have too.
10-15 years is a long time, and people can change a LOT during that amount of time A wife or husband, 1+ children, a new job with wider responsibilities are all external things that affect us. Age changes us too, a person at 35 will generally have markedly different attitudes and values than they did at 20, or 25 because they have experienced more of life, and that experience changes us.
The new modern gamer is not the same an old gamer, thier expectations are not the same. They don't have the same 'patience' ....

You do not fly your ship (like you can in X series, or Wing Commander), you travel between fixed points within a system.
You want to do anything, you need the skills for it. Skills go from Level 1 to Level 5. There are about 200 Skills
You do not learn Frigate L5 by flying around in a frigate. Want to fly a Carrier ... your training skills for 12-18 months. Skills train in realtime .. a 5day skill takes 5 whole days to train, and yes there are skills that take 30+ days to train. Most people are totally unprepared for how Eve handles character progression.
Eve requires you to KNOW what you want to do and what you want to fly before you install the game for the first time, because just being proficient in 1 type of battleship takes the best part of 4 months.
All that aside, theres a lot to do in eve. Skillbooks and a few basic commodities are sold by NPC's, everything else on the market is there because a player either mined it, looted it or made it. |
