Has been a long time since I felt like I was playing in a world and not in some linear game.  Let's hope Darkfall delivers.

darkfall should have awsome pve too

It's pretty obvious. I've never seen this much whining about graphics before. In fact, the vast majority of gamers I talk to, from FPS players to RTS, all of them value gameplay far above graphics.

The only logical explanation is that they're simply the same old vaportrolls with a different face.

That may be true in some cases. Especially those who, as stated above, make ridiculous comparisons such as comparing the graphics to EQ1 or the like. That is just plain idiocy and obvious trolling.

However, anyone who claims Graphics are totally irrelevant is just the other side of the same medal. If graphics were totally irrelevant, we'd all be playing MUD's instead of MMO's. Much more freedom in those and no wasted power on Graphics at all!

Graphics are important, because they create an atmosphere and they let you experience the world. If they just feel plain -wrong- to some people, then that is their opinion and you can't well dismiss that because that opinion is just as valid as yours.

Cheers!

MUDs have no graphics at all. Obiously I agree to an extent. 2D games  will be destined to fail.

Darkfall is not one of those, not even close. There is absolutely no reason for whining. This further reinforces my point that the so-called "graphics whiners" are merely Vaportrolls looking for new shit they can rub on Darkfall fans.

Personally, I think unrealistic and old-style graphics can, more often than not, be part of the reason a game is so succesful. Emphasis on "unrealistic".

An example, FF9. One of my favorite games, and still just as playable today as it ever was. The graphics aren't even close to realistic,  and aren't even close to today's standards, but that's part of it's charm, IMO. The backgrounds of the game, though in 2D, are amazingly beuatiful nonetheless.

A better example would be Warcraft-3  and WoW. It's unrealistic, cartoonish style of graphics was much praised and IMO was a big factor in it's sucess. FFXI and Star Wars Galaxies, which both released at the same time as WoW, failed, despite having better graphics.

And as someone mentioned earlier, Runescape. It's graphics are some of the worst I've seen in any 3D game, but have their charm nonetheless.. It's quests and full-loot wilderness PvP system are above average, though it's point-and-click gameplay left much to be desired.

Yet I played runescape happily for over a year. A game does not need to have Crysis-level graphics to be fun,  immersive, or commercially succesful.

In fact, in my opinion, over-realistic graphics can more often than not be a turn-off.

FFXi didnt fail... it has 500k subs still

SWg had less because it was very buggy, it failed because of the Cu and NGE

Its not that the graphics suck... but how they operate the graphics within their world. There are two things that are obvious with the Darkfall presentation:

They have an idea of what they want. And its pretty obvious by looking through the trailer and screenshots that they're very focused on fulfilling that vision.

They're very amateur about execution. Can't blame them though, this is their first MMO and a major testing ground for them to fulfill all they intend to do--- even if its full of bugs.

One thing that they desperately need: More team members. Because refining the code at launch and in response to players is going to need more than even 50 people working on it. If this was a single-player game, 20 people is enough to deal with bugs and testing... but this is an MMO, so code-breaking can happen quite often and repeatedly in different ways. If there's graphics problems in this game for certain 3D cards... people are going to feel the pain, because I doubt 20 people can pull out patches as fast as the Age of Conan team did in the first few weeks.

i didnt really see any gam ebreaking bugs

just animations need some work

why would the video show any consumer gamebreaking bugs? think of it in a business perspective. no gameplay video has ever done this in the face of history. think about it.

oh believe me, there will be plenty of bugs. the amount of people and the time of development have a great influence on the amount of bugs that will be in the game. the small crew of aventurine isn't going to catch them all as fast. they can't. they don't have the manpower.

of course there will be bugs we seen some in the vid none was game breaking tho

Oh really now, you have played the game and seen all this and can verify it?

Like I said before, when the game does come out, you will be looking at lots of features left out, that is a given.

Oh really now, you have played the game and seen all this and can verify it?

Don't have to play the game to make that observation.  If you had any software development knowledge at all you would know that the small shop they have would need a miracle to put together such a feature rich game at launch.  It won't happen, that is a fact you can take to the bank!

i bet you the game is feature complete

I believe Darkfall is in a real stage of development, but to say that it's on its way out the door is a little bit of an exaggeration.  They haven't even accepted beta testers yet.  Even after they accept some testers and go through the tedious beta stages the game won't be on its way out the door.  It will take some time to ensure that the game is ready for release and can actually function without crashing.

As far as seeing that 2008 release on MMORPG.com, well that is a joke.  There is not a chance in hell this game will be out this year.  I wish it was true, but there is no way.  I hope I can eat my words later this year, but I don't see it happening:)

well you should be more objective than just saying it wont. save you an arse chewing later for being wrong.

But release im not even sure on that

DF fans, I saw all 6 videos launched today on YouTube in high quality.. still downloading the torrent video....

But if this seriously makes you excited and drool... then I hate to say this... but there is already a game that looks as good or better, with probably 10 times the content out. Full PvP, looting, skills, great crafting and loot, etc.

I will admit that I didn't think the video would come out today. Figured it would be a couple more weeks. However, as I suspected they didn't show nearly as much single player 3rd person perspective game play as I would have hoped for. I understand why they showed it the way that they did. Makes it look more exciting and dramatic to show it in the fashion that they did.

I will almost guarantee you fans though that a 9 year old PvP game that exists right now is better, smoother, and already out. Simply log onto the Darktide server of Asheron's Call right now and get just as good of graphics with TONS of content, smooth gameplay, tons of skills you can completely vary your avatar with and change individually with use and experience earned. Sure, there isn't a lot of players now, but in two months after Darkfall launches, when it launches, there will probably not be many players there either.. if it lasts that long. If it launches and cannot support all the players or is very bug ridden, then most of the people who try it will eventually get frustrated and leave. And there may not be as many players buying this game as you think.

I can say after watching these videos that I am extremely confident that Asherons Call is a better game, with just as good of graphics as Darkfall will ever be. And it is going to be going on its 10th year in November people.

I will admit that I was wrong about Darkfall not launching soon. I admit that I now think it has a good chance of launching within the next six months or so. I certainly have concerns which I think are legitimate that it will have many bugs, lag, and other problems that may be very slow for such a small team to fix when it does launch however. And that alone could be the death of Darkfall. Time will tell.

I'm being serious guys and gals. If you are truly excited about this game, all of you log into the Darktide server of Asherons call and fight each other and run around and kill mobs and do quests. The quests in AC actually are MUCH deeper then the WoW type quests as well, they actually have tons of lore and purpose to them, and most are intelligently done. The PvP is some of the most fun PvP ever cone in an mmo imo, maybe only giving Dark Age of Camelot credit for more fun PvP. Death has tough consequences in Asherons Call. Items drop on your corpse, yes even items that are equipped can be lost, and the higher your level, the higher the item loss suffered, forcing you to always carry "death items" as insurance that you don't drop your most prized equipment should you die!

I suggest you play or try Asherons Call until this game releases and see what you think. There is a 14 day free trial that you can play NOW!

14 day free trial of Asherons Call

Atleast try it if you have never tried good ol' AC and if you are truly excited about Darkfall. And then in the scenario where Darkfall fails to launch for a few months and/or fails to run as smoothly as you would hope it will, you'll atleast have a solid 9 year old PvP game with tons of content that has been added monthly to fall back on.

Granted AC doesn't have the ship combat, but I betcha AC has tons of good stuff that Darfall will fall short of as well.

Whatever you do, enjoy what you play.

Yes I will try Darkfall when it's available. But I bet you anything right now that it's player based review on this website and many other websites will not be nearly as good as the reviews and scores that already exist for this old school mmo that I firmly believe is one of the best PvP mmos ever made. Trust me when I say it deserves atleast a chance from everyone who loves PvP in their online gaming.

Take care. And have fun with whatever you choose to play.

I would love to believe in the game, but there are too many ifs, buts, and maybes surrounding it.

the only if is will the server hold or bust when beta starts

An interesting thing I just thought of.

Since Darkfall cannot be made available in the U.S. at least for now ( due to being prevented from using an already trademarked name, as well as having no U.S. publisher ), all the Americans are going to have to rely on the Eurpean players for info.

Unless you all decide to play on the EU servers ( which would hinder the claim of no lag ). And that's assuming they'd get in no trouble opening the beta to U.S. players, since that would potentially open them up to trademark challenges due to the name. Saying there's a game named Darkfall in Greece is one thing, and cannot be challenged in regards to U.S. copyrights. Opening it actively to U.S. players would, presumably, allow the challenge.
