Unfortunately, both companies have lied to their user base (in regards to SWG).  They have little creditability to work with and have not conducted an effective "we were wrong, we want you back" type of campaign.

I have to agree with the above poster's negative comment with Lucas's son having a vested interest in SWG.  This is not the type of information to provide.  By so stating, this implies a perception of, "What Lucas's son wants, he gets; what the masses want, we don't care."  Also how old is Jeff Lucas, about 15?  That is an indicator of the targeted demographic.

A Story Telling System in SWG?

What is that?!?!?

I thought with the release of the NGE, that all players were to be copies of other characters in the movie, since no one wanted to be a vapor farmer in the desert, just a copy of Han Solo, or so the Lucas Arts management stated.  Makes me think of:

I'm Han Solo and this is my story...

No, I'm Han Solo and this is my story...

Both of you are wrong, I'm the true Han Solo and this is my story...

I can't see how a Story Telling System can work in present-day SWG.  Players cannot alter the story-arc.  Players cannot be the Heroes of the Galaxies.  SWG is a static theme park, in which the story arc (or lack thereof) goes on by without the interaction or actions of the masses.  I will admit back in the first year, the monthly (that was the intent, but ended up being Quarterly) story arcs was a good idea and that can be considered as providing a means for players to alter the story-arc.  Unfortunately there was only three such events and nevermore afterwards.  Maybe when I read of story-telling I am getting completely wrong, but when I think is that story telling means for a player to give an account of having done something to alter the story arc in some form or manner.

I guess by a story-telling system as per SOE/LA, this means the message boards of players telling their stories, or to say, game experiences.  Before the NGE, I was a TK-Smuggler, yes-sir'ry-bob, and when smuggler's couldn't smuggle.  Well they still can't but that's besides the point.  The point is I can tell a story of what I did in a mismanaged virtual world in which the dictatorship, or The Empire to be more correct, cared not of your self or concerns.

When asked about quality concerns, this post reported Smed saying that people would play the game even if it was full of bugs and incomplete because it's StarWars.

And I would believe he would say such a thing.  Heck I would have said it too.

It's STAR WARS and what other Sci-Fi MMO [was] out in the market?  None (for the most part).  To play a Star Wars MMO is an honor and those pathetic gamers should worship us for letting them have the privilege.  We are gods, we...  oppsss sorry, I was going on a Smed Ego Trip.

However, should I have said such a thing (which I would have), I would have quickly added afterwards, "But let us no go in that direction or rely on that.  It will bite us on the ass later on."

I believe Cryptic will produce a good game that will sell well.  What I am skeptical of, is what fan base will like or dislike STO.  For example, those who want to be immersed in the Star Trek Universe and have the potential to impact the environment (ie: Be that one person or team who helps sign a Peace Accord ending a war between the Federation and X faction) or, more of a "life simulator" as some would say (that is role-playing), I think will be disappointed.  While those that prefer more of action and getting into action as fast as possible will enjoy it.

And going for a triple crown posting....

This would be an example of when a STO moderator would take some time and make these three postings of mine into a single one.

Along with changing the green monochrome color of the text to dull gray.

And then there is...

STO.Net was good as a fansite, but not as an unofficial/official site.

Heavy use of Moderation causes a perception to arise of strictness and reviewing of private communication.  Unfortunately the reviewing of private communications was conducted without prior warning as stipulated within the forum policies.  Hence one case was made known, the creditability suffers of the moderators, resulting the possibility that others had their messages reviewed.

There was also ambiguities of the use of offensive language.  Some people were censored while others and moderators were not.  One policy said that offensive language was not allow, but another allowed for it.

Then add in all of the little moderated edits; spelling corrections, making multiple postings into one, summarizing, color changes, references, etc.

As for STO.net to return, sure it can.  But it won't be popular anymore, that seat has been filled by Hailing Frequencies.

WHY IS THIS SO HARD?

This is technically possible, the difficulty lies more with Investing and getting the biggest Return On Investment (ROI) as possible.  It is not a matter of making a fun game, but rather making a very profitable game that is fun by the masses.

When thinking about the features, think along these lines:

- Is it fun?

- Will it make money?

- How much resources and effort are required?

That is indeed where I got the 1 year item.  But I haven't read deeply into STO as of late, pretty much burned out on it for now.  Perhaps in 3 years that burn out will be over with.  Just not enough to get excited about as now STO can be up to 3 yrs away, and many things can happen from now until then.

Now however, if Crypic were to engage the community, then those 3 years will go by quickly.  I doubt this will happen, even though I would like to be strongly proven wrong.

A key element for MMO's is to build a community, even during development.  Tap into the player base. There are many players who would like to contribute, be it by characters, lore, quests, or even models.  That is what is going to make MMO's stand apart from another, blending a Metaverse with a MMO.

And Gor'ram it, I wish I could tell more.

After seeing the trailer, screens, and everything else, I'm turning the radar off for this dreck.

They did exactly what I'd hoped they wouldn't: they simply stuck to PE's game plans in order to make the quick buck. Eve Online in space and WoW on the ground.

No thanks.

About right.

But that is where the big money is believed to be at.  Eve is the Sci-Fi king and WoW is the MMO god, so in a business sense, blend the two together with one of the biggest Sci-Fi IP's and there would be millions of subscribers...

Looks good in text that is.

Once again though, another major MMO which will not allow for players to have impact to the story and content.  Let the players help build the world, what is so hard about that?

And all of these features are to be made available in about one year's time?

Something is going to have to give; either the time or some of the features.  Though there are those features listed as "after launch," I believe more would need to be slotted over as well.

Combat Vehicles in SWG?  Huh?  Got to be kidding me, I heard that back during the first year...

So now they will come online...  Somehow I just do not believe this.

And Hoth...

Let me guess, it will be a repeating static battlefield, which will be exploited and shortly thereafter closed until it can be corrected.  But how long will that take, just as long as it did with the previous battlefields.

A PvP only system, such as with Fury could have been successful.  However the business model that was used was the main problem.

The crafting game within-the-game of Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies was easily the most complex, rewarding, and intricate MMORPG economic system this side of EVE Online, and it was one of the great tragedies of the infamous New Game Enhancements (NGE) that this sublime system of resource management, trade, and customization was nearly blown away in an attempt to appeal to a larger audience. Happily, all is not lost, as the current Star Wars Galaxies development team has been taking baby steps in the general direction of recapturing the magic of the old system...

This is a perfect example of how mismanaged SWG was and still is.  I'm not applying blame or negativity against the corespondent; but rather using the statement as another supportive measure.

According to the management, SWG was too complex and required too much reading...

As of late Saturday morning (PST), all live servers are listed as Lights.

So wasn't server merges suppose to increase the server populations greatly?  A sign of improvement of things moving forward?

Well another drive-by complainer as the OP has made no attempt at defending his statement.

I believe a near complete agreement would be, that PotBS is not in the same league as other MMO's of the same monthly rate.

Which does surprise me, seems that MMO's which do not generate a large number of subscribers, do not reduce their price, rather they keep at the same rate (or go up) or go to F2P.

I would say, keep the game Avatar Centric and not with Ships, even in ship combat.

Now if the KOTOR MMO is true, best to do things different.  Place less importance for combat grinding (how about no xp for kills? Or perhaps based on the faction...) and more towards thinking and playing smarter.

If players just want to fight, then let them go and fight at the political boundaries, while the others can go elsewhere.
