it seems like now a days players consider everything a grind. what happened to all the older games when players were jsut enjoying the game even when there was grind. it seems people have to high of standards and if your bored with the game then just quit instead of complaining of grind because eventually everything will be a grind because there wont be anything left to do.

Because the first time around it's new and exciting. But we're close to 10 years into the grind era, and MMO's simply haven't attempted enough to create that feeling again. New concepts aren't being developed or used. MMO's have become cookie cutter, in the same way FPS games have. It's time to deviate from the current pattern, and introduce a new archetype to break the mold of the past 10 years.

A lot of us don't even enjoy questing. This is mainly due to boring quest stories and long times spent doing the same kind of quest with a different name. Grind is pointless, there is no lesson learned through it. It isn't a mental challenge. The challenge in MMO's is almost non-existent, and if a developer ever presents a good one, people complain its too hard.

Refund Litigation

I havent been able to play much either. Theres always an hour queue, and I really dont feel like sitting there waiting that long. I know that I won't get a refund. I'm just going to eat it and try to pick up Fallen Earth instead. Another big disappointing year in this genre.

Beta has been on indefinite hold since last December. It's not going to be released anytime soon, if ever.

Typically this site consists of 40 years old or older people disgruntled with MMO's, or people who are very young and only play WoW and F2P games. It's an age and culture divide. This site gets the good and the bad of the MMO spectrum, and unfortunately they react negatively to one another.

THIS THREAD HAS GIVEN ME AN IDEA FOR PREVENTING UNWANTED PREGNANCY! CHEMICAL CASTRATION FOR ALL! THAT WAY NO ONE WILL BE GETTING PREGNANT AND WE WON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH THOSE ANNOYING STARVING CHILDREN!

I agree that games are simply getting easier and simplier. It's also true that the industry is flooded with casual gamers (not using the term as an offense) that really couldn't care less and happily pay for  what we consider less of a game.

While those of us that grew up with the industry are likely upset it all comes down to darn business in the end which is why we're going to need to get used to these changes...we're outnumbered by a lot and any sane company will target the numbers that grant them the biggest profits.

I'm a huge fan of options though. There's no reason why a game can't have tiered rewards that are worthwhile regardless of wheither you spent 30 minutes or four hours working on it. I know they keep saying FFXIV will appease both casuals and more hardcore players, but I'm not being convinced too much so far..

Thankfully they say FFXI players are their biggest target so I cab gioe  the game won't be too casual and his way of thinking according to this article pretty much goes against such casual heavy gameplay anyways.

WoW claims the same sort of thing, but really there is no hardcore basis with the game. I've been level 80 for a month now and have already hit full epics in PvE, nothing to really go after anymore except the minor upgrades that come from raids. I don't care for the PvP in WoW anymore, its even more unbalanced and painful than ever. I consider myself leaning towards being a more hardcore gamer, and thus I am truly starving for a worthwhile game to play, even on a console. I don't expect to find a solution anytime. I would go back and play FFXI, but from what I can tell it is difficult to start out as a newbie(not as hard as before, obviously). I expect FFXIV will be a theme park.

if I couldn't run Winamp while gaming I would be very irritable. ^^ Or export screenshots. Or look at forums on the internet whilst lfg (which won't run properly without scripts enabled or browser add-ons.) Finally, I'll be damned if I'm going to be forced to use IE on my own PC.

Winamp wow, there's a decade old flashback. People still use Winamp in modern times?

Why not, it works well, so why switch?

What else should I use, that is apparently more modern and presumably better?

Nothing. But there are schmucks that use iTunes and Windows Media Player.

One of the premade configurations is dwarf-like. I believe the developers intended for you to create any race or creature you want in character customization. I don't see why you care what other players choose to be.

I sent in a ticket yesterday stating I would not be purchasing the game, and to refund me my 6-month subscription as I am now no longer interested in play testing STO. CO was great for the first 3 days, but once I got into PvP and saw the imbalance, and came to the realization that everyone sucks at making characters, I lost interest. Here's hoping I get refunded. Here's hoping they lose the Star Trek license(unlikely, I know).

This is what I get when I try to login. I've never received an email or warning. I have also never talked to anyone in game throughout the CBT. And obviously I'm not running hacks and bots. -_-

Let me get this straight, you're going to play on NA servers...but your guild site is listed as .co.uk? LOL

I was/am in the beta, and without being specific, polishing what they have won't be near enough for the game to sell as an MMO. It's a casual game at best. They entered beta way too early, not to mention they seemed to squander all the time and money they'd put into it before hand. I've personally written this off as a total failure and I am hoping it never sees the light of day.

If you have given up on the game, why the hell can't you be specific?

Forum rules and breach of NDA contract...should have been pretty clear.

Your comments are just fine. I guess I don't see the difference between f2p properly done and p2p. The means by which f2p gets money are simply different from p2p, but in the end both models need money/subscribers to survive.

As far as the things being given for free. No, of course I don't want them to shut down the servers. On the other hand, my ideas for how a f2p game can be lucrative probably wouldn't work for Runes of Magic, because the game is so limited and ties your hands in what you can do. A f2p game can be profitable in many ways. I think companies have barely scraped the surface on that one.

As for community vs game. I want a good community AND an engaging experience at the same time. It's entirely possible.

I think a game that successfully involves mechanisms for politics, power and consequences - like jail time - would make for a really cool game. Obviously it would need more mechanisms for making the game world tangible too.

I apologize to RoM fans. This really isn't the best place to discuss ideas for another game, since they'll be interpreted as attacks or whatever on RoM. RoM is good for what it is. No mistake. It's simply not what I'm looking for at this point.

What it really boils down to is starting budget.  You don't have big guns like Blizzard making a F2P game, or you might see the things you're looking for in one.  The P2P model gives the company back a large portion of their development costs in box sales, whereas F2P has to recoup the costs over time... I think that's why the P2P model is more appealing to the big budget games.

P2P games are adopting the F2P model on top of their P2P, like Champions, DDO, and WoW(character transfers/recustomizations).

As for the OP, F2P fails on a lot of levels for typical gamers. It's a decorative money tree. RoM is probably the most polished in the western market. Unfortunately, it still isn't fun unless you're into grinding stuff. You should give Eve a shot, its deep and a true world run by players(mostly). It and Ryzom are the only good sandbox games out there right now.

This whole thing makes me sick and disgusted. MGM needs to step in and defend the integrity of the IP, especially with SG-Universe right around the corner. Surely they hold some power as far as the licensing is concerned.

I don't entirely understand the MLM scheme, but I do know it reeks of failure. It's not just a scam, but its not even a plausible method of funding the game, even if the top dog ends up being CME and not Whiting as an individual.

I see this more as a longevity expansion than a content expansion. Sure, they're redoing Azeroth, but really all its going to be is a paint job and different quests. Archaeology is going to be a serious pain if handled like a gathering profession, so that and Path of the Titans seems like added grind to me. It's nice that there are only 5 new levels, but its lame that it will likely take longer than 70-80 did.

All and all, its a load of fluffy content. Just more grind and a couple of races. Not to mention the itemization changes, this is like the 5th time they've done this. It's turning more and more into a cookie cutter clone game, and thats saying a lot, because at its core the game is all about being the same. This time instead of adding depth to the stat system, they're dumbing it down some more so house wives can have a better understanding of them. Pretty soon everyone will be using the same stats and items, everyone will be the same class, and there will be only one button to press. The "auto" button.

It's not a bad game, its just a game that is the same old same old with some gimmicks thrown in. It is however, over hyped by fanboi's and websites.

You ISP knows everything you download so Windows 7 isn't where you'll be caught.

If you use SSL, they have no idea what you're downloading. I don't believe there is any SSL for Bit Torrent though. Could be wrong, haven't used it in ages.

The game can't be saved, and here is why. The zones are both too small, and too much like an instance. I've been reading Gotrek and Felix and the expanse of the world in Warhammer is so much larger than what is represented in WAR. Idealy the game world would be the scope and size of LoTRO, probably larger even,  without zoning. There would be plenty of open land for city building, open RvR, and adventuring. Mythic failed to deliver anything worthwhile with the game.

The PvE is a borefest. Then again, most PvE feels like this to me.

The PvP is too CC and AoE centric. It's too much like WoW PvP, too level and gear dependent.

The RvR isn't meaningful enough. Not enough of the world is affected by RvR.

Items are either too easy to obtain, or too over/underpowered. The crafting is shoddy and pointless, and class sets aren't properly itemized.

The engine is down right awful. Too many lock ups, lag spikes, and visual anomalies for the game to be fully enjoyable on even a high end machine.

The factions are bad. The way the sides are allied is just all wrong. Dwarves and Elves wouldn't be so willing to become allies after the things that went on at Karak Eight Peaks. Chaos would not align itself with anyone. And Dark Elves have a deep seeded hatred for Chaos.

The only thing Mythic did correctly in my opinion was the scenarios. However, I don't feel they are appropriate for the Warhammer IP in an MMO. But, if you were to be able to purchase the game simply as a lobby client and play scenarios only, it would probably be a good non-sub game. The scenario maps have nice variety, decent design, and are the only fun you can get out of the game with a small group of friends.

I really don't think the game can be saved. It would take an entirely new approach to get the game in the shape it would need to be. Mythic isn't cappable of salvaging what they have created now, not to me anyway. I'm moving on to Champions Online, STO, and SWTOR.

You can't really have a target audience of who wants to play and who doesn't. Developers typically make a game that is targeted at gamers, or specific gamers, but never would a developer focus its game on people who aren't interested to begin with.

This review is fair and balanced, and perfectly fit upon the usual curve used by this site. We can not allow developers and publishers to influence reviews on games, whether it be to gain a positive review or get a bad review revoked. This DF ordeal is Gertsmann-gate 09', only fewer people give a damn.
