Can MMORPGs like Mortal Online,WAR, Vanguard.,etc... and the likes be considered "successful"?

Originally posted by Aganazer RG was successful, TR though was not. Yes, it had a playerbase, but all games do. NC Soft paid the developers, and at some point they decided the game wasn't being profitable and wouldn't become such, so they shut the game down. TR is a perfect example of publisher and developer management gone catastrophically bad. Garriott got into space because they dumped a shit load of money into his lap and then he half assed his job. |

Any MMO that has a dedicated player base that causes it to achieve large updates and expansions should be considered a success. Examples of this would be Eve, LoTRO, DAoC, Runescape, Ultima, SWG(though their updates destroyed the original community), EQ 1 and 2, DDO, WoW, CoX, and a few others. This would be an example of covering development costs and sustaining profitability afterward. When a game with the hype and budget of WAR, FFXIV, STO, CO, AoC, and the like, rush out of the gate and then drop their player base almost immediately, it should be deemed a non-success. Not quite a failure, since the games are continuing on and attempting to attract new core players through new payment models and updates. Then there is of course games like Vanguard, that were hyped and then the business end of things killed the game before launch. Not a success, but frankly the fact that it's been around 4 years now with a skeleton team and playerbase shows a small level of success in at least salvaging what should have never been salvageable. If you want catastrophic failure though, look no further than APB and Tabula Rasa. |

There's no telling what kind of hardware and settings were being used in this play test. It's something you need to experience in person, on a machine you know, in order to really diagnose the problem.
In my experience, today's MMO gamers know the least about hardware, frame rates, networking, and lag in comparison to veteran online gamers. |

You could always play Darkfall, or Eve, both have massive travel times depending on destination. Both are extremely hardcore, brutal, and insanely difficult to get a leg up on your own. |

Just wait until you run into the holier than thou, know it all, "veterans". They ruin this place, and ruin modern MMO's. With that said, I am likely the same as these vets though. :( |

Surprise, Medal of Honor going to present day

War games can't keep using the WW2 back drop for the sake of it being an important timeline. They have to move on. If they want to stay true to reality, moving to modern times is the only real option. Vietnam was fought in an unorthodox method and can not translate into an enjoyable experience for either side, not to mention there isn't much of a leap in technology. Modern Warfare 2 should really be considered "near future" warfare, as we don't typically have soldiers outfitted with heartbeat monitors and we definitely don't see EMP's or Nuke's used. BF2142 failed due to using too many gaming concepts and not enough theoretical military technology(I don't think we'll be using manned Mech's ever, if they're used at all). The truth is that we've been forced fed military and fantasy based games for 2 decades now, and the standard is beginning its shift. What comes next? No clue, but I'd expect that this is a turning point for war gaming, either turning to the current/near future or away from the first person perspective. |

Because the first time around it's new and exciting. But we're close to 10 years into the grind era, and MMO's simply haven't attempted enough to create that feeling again. New concepts aren't being developed or used. MMO's have become cookie cutter, in the same way FPS games have. It's time to deviate from the current pattern, and introduce a new archetype to break the mold of the past 10 years. |

A lot of us don't even enjoy questing. This is mainly due to boring quest stories and long times spent doing the same kind of quest with a different name. Grind is pointless, there is no lesson learned through it. It isn't a mental challenge. The challenge in MMO's is almost non-existent, and if a developer ever presents a good one, people complain its too hard. |

I havent been able to play much either. Theres always an hour queue, and I really dont feel like sitting there waiting that long. I know that I won't get a refund. I'm just going to eat it and try to pick up Fallen Earth instead. Another big disappointing year in this genre. |

Do you think release date will be this year?

Beta has been on indefinite hold since last December. It's not going to be released anytime soon, if ever. |

Typically this site consists of 40 years old or older people disgruntled with MMO's, or people who are very young and only play WoW and F2P games. It's an age and culture divide. This site gets the good and the bad of the MMO spectrum, and unfortunately they react negatively to one another. |

Final fantasy 14- Gong Show or Challenge?

WoW claims the same sort of thing, but really there is no hardcore basis with the game. I've been level 80 for a month now and have already hit full epics in PvE, nothing to really go after anymore except the minor upgrades that come from raids. I don't care for the PvP in WoW anymore, its even more unbalanced and painful than ever. I consider myself leaning towards being a more hardcore gamer, and thus I am truly starving for a worthwhile game to play, even on a console. I don't expect to find a solution anytime. I would go back and play FFXI, but from what I can tell it is difficult to start out as a newbie(not as hard as before, obviously). I expect FFXIV will be a theme park. |

Nothing. But there are schmucks that use iTunes and Windows Media Player. |

One of the premade configurations is dwarf-like. I believe the developers intended for you to create any race or creature you want in character customization. I don't see why you care what other players choose to be. |

I sent in a ticket yesterday stating I would not be purchasing the game, and to refund me my 6-month subscription as I am now no longer interested in play testing STO. CO was great for the first 3 days, but once I got into PvP and saw the imbalance, and came to the realization that everyone sucks at making characters, I lost interest. Here's hoping I get refunded. Here's hoping they lose the Star Trek license(unlikely, I know). |

Let me get this straight, you're going to play on NA servers...but your guild site is listed as .co.uk? LOL |
