I had a lot of the same pre-thoughts. Borderlands meets defiance meets firefall. It really is nothing like any of those. The only thing this game is lacking is player 2 player interaction. That's it. It has horrible social interaction.

Exploration has a ton of missions, pubic events, story, and just forming. Add the story and co ops and it's very fulfilling.

Pvp is smooth and addictive.

But. .. you can't trade, or chat, inspect or even socialize with anyone unless they are in your group. Minus 4 directional remotes on your controller.
It's a fps. Defiance is not. The combat is very halo feeling. By defiance I mean the premise surrounding the game not the physics.
Check reddit. I may have 5or6 left will message you if I do when I get home.
You don't need a pre order for alpha. Just a ps4. Preorder is for July open beta.

yes it is absolutely amazing. this game has been what i've been waiting for. it really is impressive.

to answer your question. It really is nothing like borderlands or defiance.

When you log in, you are started on your story. It's single player but kinda open world. I don't really understand the technology but at level 2 starting out, i started to see people all over the place in the zones i was in. Really cool, makes it feel mmoish but not like too much. By too much, i mean 100's of people fighting the same mobs etc.. It was done just right giving it a social feel but not a overly crowded feel.

You finish up your intro and are taken to the tower. Kinda like the social districts in APB. BIg safe hub for weapons, mail, faction quartermasters...etc.. It' also switches to 3rd person , which gives you a "how do i look" in my new gear view. Love this idea and it really goes a long way in my book (that little extra effort). The tower also gives you bounties daily/weekly mission terminal for pvp, pve etc..

While in the tower or anywhere you can choose to go to orbit. in orbit you can select a planet and choose from storyling, fireteam (raids/dungeons), exploration mode.

I have been doing pvp and exploration mode pretty much. Exploration is kinda whatever you want to do. I dropped down and there are these beacons that give you various missions of kill x, scout y, analyze z etc.. it is constant combat, the enemies rain from ships nonstop. There are good places to leave combat and not get tracked but most of the area is heavily congested with mobs. They also have pretty solid ai.

while in the world , whether story mode or exploration, public events happen. The only one i've had happen was this huge space ship comes and drops off this big tank that we had to kill. It wasn't easy and we didnt kill it. Was 5 a.m and only 3 people chose to join in the zone. Was fun nonetheless.

fireteam, devils lair is the only dungeon available. it's not a cake walk and probably the closest thing in this game to borderlands. devils lair is a dungeon but it's really challenging. I didn't do many fireteams.

As your character levels up you unlock, traits, talents, ablities etc.. so there is character progression. Items also progress and equipment can be broken down , and there is engrams (unindentified equipment). Too much to explain. I've dragged this out long enough.

Other than being an fps there isn't much else i can compare this game too. It's a sci-fi shooter with pve + pvp. Think defiance done right and on a much much much larger scale. The game is leaps and bounds ahead of anything i've played in the past 20 years. if you have any specific questions ask away.

this review seems incredibly biased. ROS came out today and you give it a 10/10 on value and 9.5/10 on longevity. Even if you played the closed beta how can you possibly give something a value grade on a day of play and longevity grade when there is no possible way you've done any legitimate farming.

did you beat it? this has to be the worst ending to a game i've ever seen.

The loot/Ah trading etc.... really should have left that at 5/10 since half the people loved trading the other half didn't.

while i do agree that paragon, class builds and loot recieved overall updates. It still stands that nephalem rifts are incredibly unrewarding and the mystic has a fine print to it on your re-rolls. Adventure mode is a gamble too. I am not saying i dislike adventure mode but there really needs to be a lot more 'time' invested to see how rewarding it feels. Remember almost all the big name streamers quit this game less than a month into playing it.

socialization is more forced on players now than ever with boa (cept in game in party) .

longevity...9/10. This is the first update to the game. It basically took out features , added features that were promised from the beginning and gave you 1 act and 1 class that is already beaten. How did you possibly come up with that type of score for longevity? Rating it on content not yet in the game like PvP and ladders. Also, the interview with lead designer said they are still "talking about how to add pvp". "we'd like to add x feature or x feature is coming soon" is not the same "x  feature is in the game".

i enjoy some of your reviews here, but sometimes these huge titles you review seem like you were paid to prmote it. Seeing all the ROS on the site, i can see how that may be the case. Just asking for a little more objectivity in your "official review"

"PvP, if we do it, we’d have to go all in. That’s why it’s not in Reaper. But we’ll continue to look at it and, if we find a good solution, we’ll start down that road. Right now it’s sitting there on hold."

im done pre-ordering. I am 36 years old. Back in my day when you purchased a game you got a full working game.

now, you purchase 1/4 the game, wait on the rest as either dlc's or xpacs etc.. Recently, you get beta versions for your pre-order. I'll admit that wildstar seems to really be trying to release a full game but after preordering , defiance, diablo, ME, aoc, gw2, swtor  and the list goes on im just gonna wait. Games are so casual friendly, i can just wait a while, pick it up cheap and get caught up in 30 days.

just not worth the headaches. Pre-ordering used to be advantageous back in the day, now you don't really get anything but frustration.

i think this is a step in the right direction but does not fix the underlying issues. The game will be enjoyable for a few months at most and that is totally worth the price tag in my opinion.

the reason the game has such a huge drop off after a short time is they made itemization much like an mmo.  I think they are trying to fix as much as they can but the very core of the game is way to much like diablocraft and that's the biggest mistake they made.

im not saying it's bad, the game is incredibly enjoyable now but it'll suffer the same fate of being burned out rather quick.

im not wow'd by any means. Really a huge chunk of change to pay to enjoy all the game aspects as well. Wish i could voice my anger about certain things but meh. But yah, will give it more time and see. So far, not worth the price.

Quickest uninstall ever was DDO - was so hyped being and old growing up on dungeons and dragons table top.

second would be warhammer online - it was ugly, clunky, and not very fun on any level at launch.

last would be guild wars 2. I enjoyed my first 3 or 4 days playing it and then i hit thispoint where i felt like "that's it" . The abilities, weapon based, spells didn't feel right and you had zero character progression. It wasn't bad, just wasn't there for me in the long run.

definace is up there too, but i think that game could be good.

there is just no innovation to the genre anymore. I am much older and was an adult playing EQ. Remember WoW on release. Around 2007 for me, it just seemed to be the same thing.

I have played star wars galaxies, swtor, guild wars 2, wow, and so many more over the years. I find myself drifting to console games because they are providing what mmo's are leaning towards. Large open , single player games.

More and more games are moving to console , and mmorpg's are just not doing anything to change with the times.

As you grow old and mature though (you are still young), you start to see how absolutely pointless it is to raid a dungeon, 5 nights a week, for virtual items, that you are going to replace in a few months. No one can so that all these dungeons are fun after the 50 th time being there.

That is the model of mmo's though, and it needs a change. SOme sort of direction into a new format.

Thank you for the replies. I still follow the game, and I may check back in after this DLC.

Good luck and remember, despite the negativity... most of us complain because we want DEFIANCE to be great.

Thank you for the AMA. I want to say that defiance has the potential to be a great game. I would like to explain why I stopped playing and maybe you can answer if any of those reasons are going to be addressed.

1. I played on ps3. As an mmo, it lacked socialization on every aspect. From chat interface, to having a social hub etc.. I know there are limitation on console but does this dlc or any planned ones attempt to bring some life into the massive online aspect of the defiance mmorpg.

2. I am an avid pvper and , defiance seems like it has huge potential for pvp but the flip side there is hardly any direction in pvp.

3. Lastly and ultimately the reason why i stopped was character progression. It appears that trion wanted to have the borderlands loot feel to the game, but didn't realize that borderlands is not an mmo. There doesn't feel like any type of foothold your character has on the world. It ultimately felt to me, that i was logging in to look for a gun, to shoot the same red crystal.

Granted i quit before the casthian charge pack, but after spending 50 on a game that went down to 10 bucks the following week, im a little gunshy to spend on a game that i was relatively uninterested in shortly after buying.

again, thank you for taking the time to do this AMA

Ever since I quit SWTOR back in October and came to these forums, I was happy to have been met with mostly warm welcomes. I was very happy to reveal to you all how EAware's CT is heavily biased toward the apologists, and pretty much swiftly deals with anyone who criticizes a change or decision made to the game, or the game itself.

Now I'm wondering whether SWTOR can actually sustain itself for another year or two? I say this because subs have been dwindling heavily since release. As you all know, EAware was forced to go F2P, and did so in November of 2012. It's been a year now since F2P was implemented, but subscribers keep on falling. Sure, they'll spike up a bit near and during the release of an upcoming expac, only for them to plummet right after. It's very common for MMOs to lose many subscribers after a major expac.

SWTOR started out with around 1.7mil subscribers, and our last report of current subs was right after the release of Rise of the Coin Cartel, which put SWTOR at just under 500k subs, thus making it the 3rd most subscribed MMO in the western market. Subs may not be a good indicator for how much money SWTOR is making, but it sure is hell of a good indicator on how many people think the game is good for the long run. A 75%+ loss in subscribers since launch—that is NOT a good indicator whatsoever.

There are many reasons why SWTOR is losing subscribers at the rate it is, which include, but are not limited to:

  • The CT "attacks" critical posters while they "endorse" apologists, making them heavily biased.
  • Using a pre-alpha engine to develop the game.
  • Heavy focus on the CM for a quick buck.
  • Lack of endgame content (more PvP systems have been removed and some Operations weren't scaled).

There could be A LOT MORE I could add to that list, but I will not. When I was playing, my server was Prophecy of the Five. Before I quit, I noticed PvP pretty much died on there... on one of the biggest servers on SWTOR. It's pretty sad that EAware is killing off what's left of the dying player-base. SWTOR could have been a huge e-sports game, but alas, EAware uses their "metrics" instead of interacting with their forum community, when the latter knows what's best for the direction of PvP at this point in time, while the former does more harm to the game than it does good.

So do you think SWTOR will be able to be maintained for another year or two and then shutdown, or will it continue to live on and prosper and expand, improve and innovate?

I look forward to a mature discussion.

I've been a pretty big hater , lover, hater of this game. I do not play it anymore (i do sub every now and then for a month just to level an alt ) .

At launch the game had massive amounts of hype. The game opened up way to many servers because they weren't expecting the amount of people playing. After about 3 months or so, those people (myself included) who got to max level, realized it was just another raid/dungeon game. Population dropped hard and they were down to just a handful of servers.

That was the "rough" point. During this time, they increased server capacity and eventually went f2p. They are seeing an INCREASE in revenue + unique logins, NOT a decline in them.

I do not know of any MMO (lol doesn't count, im talking gw2, wow, swtor type games) that have e-sports on a competitive level. The biggest one is wow arenas on twitch and it's still not an e-sport in terms of frequent tournaments that you would find at MLG. Expecting an MMO to hold a competitive pvp environment and promote it as an esport is kinda  weird to gripe at.

While I do agree with all the complaints from pretty much everyone and their mother, the game is basically a wow clone with light sabers that is missing 75% of the features in wow. The game itself is amazing on the first few playthroughs and extremely enjoyable for the story. It stops at max level, everyone knows that. I find the ui responsiveness, loading times and technical issues to slowly changing for the better. The rate at techinical improvements is really slow though.

PvP is still bad, not because the classes or game is bad, but because the engine really hurts when there are more than 8 people doing anything on the same screen. I love the pvp in teh game, more than any other mmo but it's technically a piece of crap with no optimization options or macros or anything that would allow it be something worth investing time into.

I could go on with all it's flaws, but to answer your question; the game is here to stay, there are far worse games that have gone free to play and lived longer. I do hope they continue to release more non-ops/flashpoint content. GS is a good step, arenas, and hopefully next its all about customization.

anyways my two cents.

I think they're trying to improve the game. PvP in this game could be amazing, and they're focusing on that. They try to add content and I think are realizing that the game needs to be more dynamic, open, etc..

The original idea and development of the game was severely flawed. Hence, the f2p , almost shut down. The story driven, single player feel of swtor is slowly dissapearing as they addmore "social " features to the game.

If they continue to add more things to do other than flashpoints, ops..this game will probably grow. They need a lot of technical adjustments (game has too many loading screens, ui bugs , performance issues, mechanics issues).

I am glad to see the game moving forward. I'll come back for the GS expansion and play for a while. Hopefully they'll add more to keep me around.  I still think the game is a monumental dissapointment and huge slap in the face to star wars fans but they are trying to improve on it.

i played on pc and quit , and actively play on my ps3.

The AH made diablo 3 what it is in terms of gear. One of the main reasons everything was junk, was because of just how accesable everything was on the AH.

Im using weapons and builds i'd htought i'd never use on ps3 and enjoying it so much more. I trade from time to time and almost always do online but all in all this is a great move.

Diablo 3 is moving back into what made it such a great name, hopefully they turn it into a great game. Console is absolutely amazing and almost like a different game.

i grew up on star wars (i saw return of the jedi in the theatres at 4 years old). When this was announced , i was counting down the years till it was coming.

I think with most of us , "hope it fails people" , just felt completely let down. For various reasons, whether right or wrong , it didn't live up to expectations. That's not really an opinion, the game had one of the largest drop offs in the history of mmo's. I want a star wars game and an mmo i just don't want this one.

I am tempted from time to time to resub, because i love star wars and i loved the stories. I stop and i ask myself, is it worth it, what will you do after leveling another alt. There just isn't anything, pvp is in a terrible place. Space combat may bring me back if it has some depth.

I have this protest mentality with swtor. Having played cbt and tested it and played and subb'd i feel a strange and passionate hate for what bioware did to this game. I don't know why, i just want this game to shut down. Someone can do a much better job with much less and the longer this stays up the longer i have to wait for a "real" star wars mmo. i wanted and tried to love this game.

i think after reading the cantina transcript and seeing them say "sitting in your ship seat was a hack", i was scratching y head. They have no clue how to make their customers happy. Little things that provide immersion go so far in games. In cbt we told them the amount of zoning took away from immersion. Dev response was locking the thread with no reply.  You see no real passion from them on this game and no desire to do anything but milk this game with cartel packs and vanity items to the end.

I am still subbed but am on a hiatus for a couple of months. I enjoyed my time with SWTOR but it never was the "Star Wars world" that I was hoping for.

Long term I expect SWTOR to be shut down sometime next year. The mention that it was not in a good place in the EA report to the investors I believe is a key indicator that SWTOR is not making the big bucks that f2p was supposed to provide.

The reason it will be shut down is that it takes big bucks to keep the Star Wars license. Every gaming company that I have seen that got a Star Wars license has failed or gone critical in time. EA is not the type of company to put up with money losers - eventually SWTOR will be dropped.

Not sure what investors report you read but it wasn't the one that all the other people read obviously. SWTOR coupled with FIFA is making EA quite a lot of money atm. As to the SW IP , well EA got the rights to nearly all SW games recently , that is well after the license for SWTOR started. So for them to shut down a SW MMO , when they are about to release more SW games is silly IMO. Also they are hiring testers for October , possibly for the SSSP or other content / expansion. Shutting down next year ? My a**e.

Cheers,

BadOrb.

on their last quarter investor report they didn't even mention star wars. You don't give away an expansion for free if you are doing good as a business.  The swtor forums are incredibly doom and gloom as well. What other Star Wars games is EA releasing?

although mmorpg.com got some love on an ea press release :)

problem is that mmo's shouldn't have a finish. Swtor's end game cap basically stops everything that made leveling fun and you are left with no more of the leveling process awesomeness. The game completely stops at max level, this is why they had 5 gazillion servers for about 2 months then like 5 servers. THere is absolutely no reason to play this game at max level.

bioware,  the crooks they are realized this. Instead of doing the right thing they stripped out everything in the game to make it f2p. The goal is to lure people in to pay the sub and gamble some.

Out of principle , i will not touch this piece of crap no matter what they add. They treated this game like a business instead of like a passion which is what star wars fans want. THey have zero interaction with the community.

Selfish company, selfish devs, and a business model with no passion for a franchise that people grew up on over 35 years ago.  Company lays off over half it's staff, servers shut down, goes f2p, gives away expansion....you ask if it can recover? im more worried about the people that think this game is somehow a success. an mmo that stopped being an mmo at max level...if i were a development company i'd have a list of every developer at bioware and make sure they were on the "do not hire" list.

Thats is not only SWTORs fault, but whole themepark MMO genre fault.

No, endless grinding of miniscule xp from mindless mobs to level or repeating same raid/camping random boss for gear for weeks/months is pretty much the end for vast majority of people. Its just the nature of themepark MMOs, when youve ridden all developer provided rides the only thing thats left is repeating the rides ad nauseum.

It might have worked for "early" MMOs (EQ/WoW), but what youve written is true for any themepark MMO nowadays, developers cant churn out content fast enough, especially to warrant a subscription and pretty much vast majority of people go in to do just that - play MMO to "finish" it and move on, they are not interested in mindless grinds while waiting for new content thats 6+ months away (and in some cases pay 15/month for it).

And no, this is not an praise for sandbox because true sandbox would fail just the same.

I totally see where you are coming from. This is why i just don't play themeparks anymore, i've not played many mmo's as of late because in truth, they are all the same.

The thing with star wars the old republic, is that the investment into this game and the product failed to such a monumental degree. This game had 20x the budget of older mmo's , yet has so much less. What bioware/EA has in turned done as a company has been shameful and if someone had the balls, could easily take them to court (referral program, misleading ads, blatant lies on marketing etc..).

the game will more than likely either rot away, or drop down to pwe, nexon level. Like i said though, i completely agree with you on themeparks in general but this one themepark isn't a no name ip, or a no name studio. This is the publisher of games that lead the market, a development studio that had a very high rep at one point.

what this developer/publisher has done to the consumers makes me ashamed to have purchased a product from them.

swtor was very worth the money box+sub from start to fnish.

problem is that mmo's shouldn't have a finish.
