Been rumoured for a while, microsoft and acti/ bliz working on a 720 / win 8 exclusive mmo

I highly doubt that given Activision AND Blizzard's new-found partnership with Sony and PS4.

This has nothing do with other partnerships. Just because Blizzard is finally bring games consoles, again, will it limit what they do with other partners. Infact I wouldn't be suprised they would bring Diablo 3 on 720 release.

Like others have stated if you already have a license for Win 7 Pro laying around use that. Win 8 is OK but also as others have said it may be wise to wait for the first service pack to release later this year before making it your OS. With Microsoft OS's it's usually after the first service pack that most of the bugs from launch get ironed out and the platform gets a whole lot more stable. You really can't go wrong with Win 7 Pro on a gaming PC at this point in time. Upgrading to Win 8 after the first service pack releases would be reletively painless as well as you won't even need to lose your files during the upgrade.

Utter bollocks on Service Pack stuff, Win7 was fine in RTM and so is Win8. Get Win8 Pro, you get Hyper-V to run virtual machines for older games. If you play games mostly you spend all time in desktop tile so it's not any different than Windows 7.

I see MMOs fragmenting and morphing in to single player games. Traditional MMO market isn't dying but it's not growing. MOBAs and other limited player games with massive hubs are clearly future. People want to play social, together with other players but not dedicating there life to game like MMOs traditionally needed.
In nordic wellfare countries such a Finland it's really easy to just stay unemployed and play games at home. Especially if they don't have any kids. Basicly social service pays your rent and unemployement check covers food plus other stuff.

I cant remember if a popular title ever got ripped this bad on Metacritic before....

Freaking Gamespy gave it a 10 for crying loud!

EDIT* Just checked to see what game has the lowest all time user rating on that site. You guessed it, WarZ

That's just mob mentality of Metacritic nowdays, rendered whole system totally useless. Warz as game isn't even that bad, it's the cash shop that truly ruins game. Lying features is bad but who truly believes developers nowdays is just naive.

I would be suprised if

-Main character wasn't human

-There wouldn't be any corny jokes of gnomes and undeads

-There isn't dungeon where group of heroes are going to find some crazy thing

-There wouldn't be common enemy that causes both sides to work together

I don't know why people expect ESO to be Skyrim Online ... it is not possible.

Paint me crazy but I will go out on a limb and say that people expect a game called "The Elder Scrolls Online" to draw it's major influences from

#drum roll#

"The Elder Scrolls" series of games.

As for "not possible" tell me which parts of it are not possible and I bet I can come up with a working solution.

Warcraft was RTS game before Blizzard turned it World of Warcraft and basicly created goose that lays golden eggs. In fact when people talk Warcraft they mostly mean WoW nowdays not the RTS games.

People who claim that Skyrim could be just turned to MMO should seriously spend bit more thinking concepts like lag, balance, questing with 100 people and so on.

The thing is ESO will be using this megaserver technology (1 giant server). How can you segregate PvP and PvE? Could of worked if you had multiple servers.

TBH I didn't watch the youtube video, however I'm guessing it's from the PoV of a PvP'er.

They will be making one area(Cyrodiil) of itself for PvP, much like GW2's WvWvW, however I would prefer it if you wandered into someone elses territory, except Cyrodiil, that they'd be able to attacked you. (However, flagging themselves for PvP as well, allowing you to attack them as well.)

Edit: Fair point however, the megaserver might require them to remove that kind of PvP and cater to the PvP:ers among us by adding a designated PvP Area.

Pointless and annoying feature. I hated this in WoW where people would mass zerg capitals or kill NPCs.

If you refer to the engine being crap as being used in SWTOR, they used a heavily modified 7 year old version where the HE devs have kept telling them not to do it.

Hate to break it to you, but the current version of Hero isn't all that great either.

So you're saying you've extensively worked with the current HE version for the entire 3 weeks its been out, right?

Perhaps you can tell use great game that actually uses HE? HE site has youtube video from last year that shows games made using it, I can't regonize any of them except SWTOR. I think one part is from Repopulation. I found it funny that many people say HEngine is good yet there isn't any proof other than SWTOR which is heavily modified version.

My biggest complaint with the "holy trinity" is that it's outdated and stale. I think pure healing characters are a terrible design and developers who stick with the trinity template have done very little to make healing classes more appealing. There's a reason why WoW has always had a shortage of healers, it's because the vast majority of players when in combat, don't want to play the role whose only purpose is to stand back and target heal whoever's health falls low. It's completely 1-dimensional, so much that in most scenarios, the role of a healer can be done succesfully by a programmable bot.

My belief, is that pure healing needs to be done away with and replaced with a role that's based on supporting using a variety of utility skills such as crowd control, shields, buffs/debuffs, and limited healing. And keep the variety going, let's have both combative support characters who are designed to get in and fight, as well as the more passive ones who don't. This is how I'm hoping GW2's meta will eventually evolve into, and quite frankly I think it's far more interesting than the standard tank/healer/dps.

WoW fixed this by making boss battles and dungeon fights more mobile. Most mobs force everyone to move all around. Also CC for healers have been part of play style in WoW for years. Aggro is needed because it makes combat less chaos and that's whole point of raiding, how well you can organize chaotic moments. Holy Trinity problem is that it's largely unbalanced in raiding or groups, normally you have 10% Tanks, 30% healer and rest dps. It should be closer to 30% for every role. Also Holy Trinity doesn't fit PvP at all. GW2 showed that all faults that non-aggro system has, it's boring and chaotic mess.

the manner is they pulled the plug without warning, and all the while allowing paragon studio to continue developing and maketing future content that was generating a reveue stream both in the form of continuing subscriptions and micro transaction.

COH was still making a profit, it was not a drain on thier botom line, like some other titles they publis are.

Pff, you don't know what the true motives where behind. CoH was very old game, perhaps based on techniques that were expensive to upkeep in long term. Just because something makes few bucks every month it isn't wise business, cost structures of huge company like NcSoft are really hard to understand even inside company. MMOs just die simply because everything has to end someday.

I guess this is what I get for trying to have an adult discussion on here...

to try to help, i played for about 2 hours yesterday and i ran some quests, explored the world, and found people actually doing drum circles.  Many seemed to be socializing more than playing, which isn't necesarrily a bad thing.  Some of my best mmo memories come from standing around talking to others while not playing the game

This ^^. I have never played Asherons Call 2 before but I went out on a limb to try it now, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. It doesn't hold your hand, but it gives you just enough information about things. You don't have NPC's with quest arrows above their heads but if you talk to every npc you end up with a plethora of quests to do, I'm sure they run out eventually because people said there aren't too many but I have seen people wanting to group for dungeons (or just group areas not sure haven't done it yet). I also walked into a town and there was 3 people playing lutes ( I think?) and they had a group dancing in front of them and they were just chatting. It's a very social game from what I have played so far, and it is really a refreshing experience compared to most other MMORPG's out.

And what you saw is just a taste of the kind of community AC2 had, and that you could also find in most 1st and 2nd Generation (read: old-school) MMOs.

When folks like myself and others talk about how newer MMOs foster and nurture a "lone-wolf" approach to things, and how we long for the days when MMOs had real server communities.... it's not just "rose colored glasses" or "nostalgia goggles". We're not exaggerating or romanticizing it into something it never was.

What you saw is a small example of exactly what we've been talking about. Just a small one, mind you. When it really sinks in, is when you realize that you know or at least recognize most of the people on your server - if not "personally", then by name.

It's why people coming back now will see people they played with, or otherwise knew from their server over 7 years ago and haven't seen or spoken to since, but recognize them by name, and pick right up where they left off. I've seen this happening in General and in local/say right around me in-game. I've seen people in chat discussing fun times they had, funny situations they got into and epic fights they pulled through on. Things that took place almost a decade ago, they recall in detail like it was yesterday. It's an amazing thing to witness.

That's what community - TRUE Community - in a MMORPG is, and what it should be.

People who say "join a guild" and think it's a sound suggestion have no idea what an actual vibrant MMO community is, what it can be, or what it can do for its respective game. It elevates a MMORPG from being "just a game", to being an entire social setting. Like a virtual neighborhood in a much larger town, where everyone knows each other, and everyone gets along.

I only hope it keeps up and continues to grow and thrive. The genre needs that, badly, and I would love to see more MMO gamers who came to the genre later on get to experience that for themselves.

Rose tinted glasses. Mostly those "communities" were horrible places with sub-urban syndromes. Fact was that games were so boring that MMOs were more a glorified chat rooms where you would go just grind and chat, sometimes this monotinized rythm was broken by "raiding" that involved large groups of player clusterfucking together and having drama queen competitions. Community aspects are still there in games, you're just so jaded to see them in modern games. Instead of all dressed in beige, players have much more to do and less time for useless chats or gimmicky social stuff.

The social gimmicks die fast and whole beta was full of people just drumming, however whole drumming was old in start and most people just ignored it simply because it had no purpose. Otherwise my experience on AC2 start was pretty bad, chat was broken, constant crashes, lack of content, Evercrafting clone, constant lags and so on.

I find it intresting that Turbine even bothered to bring AC2 back. I doubt they ever make it F2P unless AC subs boom.

OMG they made ART change decision two games ago, this game will suck so much!!!

Isn't Aventurine Greece company? Big suprise that you should give money for promises, deja vu. And wasn't DF largely financed by goverment? I think that money tap is pretty dry nowdays. Well atleast you get something for your money, unlike the goverments. Unless you are accountant in Greece goverment it doesn't take long to count 1+1 ain't 3.

Ironic the main issues with WoW is server disconnects and 132 errors.........see the official forums.

Yeah because no MMO launched same time as WoW, oh wait there was EQ2, CoH, Ryzom and Matrix Online. All big names, all flopped. All this shit about WoW been right place, right time is such a bullshit. And Bill can hype Rift as much as any fanboy can, it still won't make it better game than WoW.

I don't find any reason why anyone would want to do this. Installing Windows on SSD makes it lot faster. Trying to break installation is just silly and asking troubles, plus you hardly gain anything. Personally I have found using SSD for OS and other for games best combination in terms of performance.

I really don't get this moaning nowdays. First you say it's great game, then you say F2P is faulty and yet you refuse to pay any money, seriously?!? If it really is that great game people should be subbing it instantly after trying F2P, but they aren't. I find Vanguard, yet again, over hyped and not that good game. It was and is a betamax in DVD world.

There is no free meals, get over it.

I'm not suprised that CoH is going down, I'm suprised it lasted this long. Apart from great character creation and different setting it was highly repeative on so many levels. But I guess lot of people loved it. Time to move on and stop moaning.

What EA touches, EA turns to crap.  Amazing they manage to stay in business.

McDonalds produces crap and they are one of the biggest companies in the world.

Welcome to an era where quantity destroys quality.

Really bad comparison and only slightly true in one point. Firstly cost structure is totally different. Game industry is much like film industry. When you have to put 50 million dollars for product that will be ready in 2-5 years and has high risk of never returning that money. Majority of game studios fail because they are playing poker with all-in all time. They might win hand but it takes just one hit to go down. Only similiar thing with McDonalds and EA is that they can lose hand simply because they are so big.

Game industry is less fun nowdays. Back in 90's you could make really good AAA grade game with just 20 people, not much management in that. Now you need hundreds and probaply 20 people just to manage that. Same time gamers are more demanding and less interested to spend time with your product.
