I know more people that started out with C and then went to C++ but I think it is best to start with C++ itself. The basics are really not that hard even if mastering it is really hard, there is a reason most MMOs are not so great coded.

C++ is most used game coding language since it's unmanaged and gains most power of system. However C++ hasn't gained much speed or improvements and is really hard to learn. Starting with C# might be best, not only is it upgraded regulary it's also very fast nowdays. XNA allows you quick coding with easy debuging compared C++, so you learn faster. Learning C++ is pretty easy, but ones you go graphics level it's really hard. If you want to go that path look code in OGRE to learn how stuff is done.

Indeed, so far all whinning could been answered simply by this:

SWG was commercial failure, Bioware isn't going to repeat it, so SWTOR won't be like SWG, THE -ING END!

This game has become more and more unappealing with every bit of news I have heard.
I really wanted this game to work out, I love Star Wars.

Problem is that this isn't George Lucas Star Wars, this is Old Republic. If you played Kotor you probaply notice that only non-human organic companion was Zaalbar wookie and in game point he was bit annoying to equip and listen in long term. And I'm glad it's not George Lucas Star Wars since the new movies was crap and SWG was total crap.

As much as I love a good story, I fear Bioware makes a huge mistake focusing entirely on it. It is a known fact, that MMO players rarely read the quest text, and skip voice talk, especially in a group (its simply impossible). The concept Bioware seems to use for TOR souds like a linear adventure model, RPG on railtracks, which will hurt it badly in the end, because it is not flexible. MMO's are all about flexibility. Players want freedom, and they want to explore the Galaxy, as they see fit, without being taken by hand like in a movie. A sandbox system with added story lines would be much mroe flexible and offer somethign for everyone. It is something I think ArenaNet is doing in Guild Wars 2.

I watched all Tortage quests in AoC but didn't bother read most after that, so clearly spoken/acted quests are better than pile of text. And how is Guild Wars 2 sandbox??? I haven't heard single sandboxie feature, player housing? No, dynamic crafting(aka make "unique" items)? No, Area control PvP? No. Only "unique" feature in GW2 seems to be that decided to ditch Healer classes in favor of all can heal system. Sure it's pretty but it's also very generic (serious) middle age fantasy MMO much like Tera, Rift and god knows what other.

Many people seem to drum on this player freedom but you can get lost in freedom and that is not fun.

To the OP:

If you're playing WoW and no one in WoW knows about Rift.....do NOT worry.

When I was playing WoW there were people who had never even heard of EQ, and LOADS that had never heard of UO.  A lot of WoW players are first time MMO players. They don't follow the market, they're not looking at other games.

Don't worry your sweet little head about it, Hun.  The people that are long time gamers and actually consider GAMING to be  their hobby (not WoW as their hobby)....know about Rift. Of course that still doesn't mean they're necessarily going to PLAY it...but they do KNOW about it.

So you think game that costs 50million to make can survive with bunch a old time MMO vets, give me a break. OP is damn right, Rift can be very good game but it doesn't matter if no-one has ever heard of them. Rift has serious obstacles to get thru:

1. Who the hell is Trion? Okey so we know there is couple guys from big franchise, big deal! Unless your name is John Carmack or Romero don't expect majority of players know who you are. How you plan to fight against big muscles that can say "We made Motha-ing Mass Effect/Starcraft!", "Zomg, it's Blizzzard/Biowarez"

2. What a hell is Rift? When I first saw pics of Rift I thinked, Did Tera change name? Rift is generic fantasy MMORPG that is currently overflooded on market. It doesn't matter if it is lot better game when in shelf it has to go against "Zomg it's StarWarz/It has number 2 behind" competition.

They have to start drumming rolling soon to gather hype or aim to please molt covered MMO vets, either way it is really hard path to walk. Almost monthly you find new MMO popping up and old ones die.

Guild Wars 2 will have no monthly fee.

I guess they will go belly up within a month just like their first game did...  no wait.

Well it wasn't hit either and Anet isn't as rich as Blizzard. Anyways I would be suprised if they wouldn't have store where you can buy NON-GAME EFFECTING stuff like "unique" companions or other stuff. Blizzard made nicely from special items by luring them to trade cards and other franchise.

WoW's game world 9/10?!!!  LOTRO game world 8/10?!

HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED BOTH? WoW has a little and awful world, like a kids playeground. LotrO has one of the biggest and most beatiful world.

5 for WoW, 10 for LOTRO.

I guess you never played Warcraft. I think most people were thrilled when they could adventure thru many places of Warcraft world. When I first played Lotro everything looked like in postcard, but it also felt like I was inside postcard. Yes it's beatiful but also very static, also why hell in all Turbine games I feel like I'm ice skating.

Also Lotro like many non-game based franchise suffer from lore. You can't make world very diverse without going against lore. WoW creators went mad and made silly world full of jokes and other fun, and they could do it unlike Turbine.

i believe what hes saying is if you go out and practice some gathering, like all good rpg players should, you can boost yourself nicely, ive also heard theres time limits imposed on how much xp you can earn before it stops coming in for any kind of class job, sounds like a good time to take a break sleep or do another task then combat to me!

I didn't know my mom was designer of this game. Be a good son and go out, be a good son and do some crafting.

When ever someone says "be good" + something, I give them finger. It goes same idiocy as "your not man if you don't go army", "real men don't eat salad" and other macho bullshit.

It's an interesting question but one that can be applied to all MMOs and even all video games, not just SWTOR - what if laser swords and bullets really did what they did in real life?

Games would be much more about defence, dodging, positioning and ambushing since the first person to get their blow in would probably win. Can that translate into game fun? Has there ever been a game that managed to pull it off?

Real life isn't fun. However games like Operation Flashpoint had really realistic damage models and weapons, not junk that you have in Medal of Honor or Call of Duty. However after playing long time Flashpoint I wouldn't play it as MMO very long. I think WW2online is closest to real life in gaming and it hasn't got many players.

I think everyone is misunderstanding me... At least it would be nice if ppl showed SOME pain when being shot, sliced, etc.

I dont mean like someone punches you and you get so dramatic to the extent where you start crying.

I mean just make COMBAT more dramatic. You know, at the moment, from the videos ive seen when the npcs and/or player characters are hit they act like nothing happen. More than half the time they just slightly move their head and shoulder or maybe they dont even move at all.

This whole thread screams Monthy Python and Holy Grail scene, but I'm not saying that. Problem is that game combat isn't real combat. It would look comical and silly if blood and guts would fly in real combat with swords but fighters would just keep fighting since they have HP. In same sense it would be really annoying and stupid if combat would be like real life and fighter dies on 1 hit. Black Knight out.

Sorry for saying this but some of you ppl are too lazy if your going to the mall you don't have a window poping on your head telling you were x item is sold and for how much you need to look!

Bazaar is the best way to make profit on people that don't know the prices and/or lazy people that will buy the first one they see to not waste time.

Even if you go in the AH you could spend minutes to hours searching for items you want and it's fine for you but having to click and see from person to person is boring? how so? Your searching to try find an item and maybe get lucky and find someone selling them cheap.

For me these 2 systems should be in games more bazaar cause you can control the price easier then an auction.

You kidding me right, it's better that buyer has harder time finding cheapest price? You know this game right where point is that you do something different than in real life? I guess some women and men would love shopping MMO where you spend all time shopping. I mean is it good game where you have to FIND person who sells certain item? I just leveled on Bazaar quest! I guess I'm not HC enough for Bazaar system. And think how much crap would be trade channel full when couple thousand players try advertise!?

And Kordac, Bazaar isn't anything new or innovative. Same crap was in games like EQ2 and older.

I wouldn't call the WoW system perfect at all, because most servers I played on had a few players totally controlling the price of certain popular items, if anyone tried to lower prices a little they would mass buy then re-list them at the higher price. It was very hard to find anything that might not be on the AH as the trade channel was used by idiots for spam so most people turn it off.

What you describe isn't problem of AH itself. It's the problem of game economy. WoW wasn't designed very well to suite as economy simulator. But what is the option, that you have to go thru 10k vendors to find stuff? Or you don't think that trade channel will be death bombed in games that don't have AH and same mass players as WoW. No AH itself is great because it allows you to sell stuff easily and buy stuff easily. It makes life EASY.

Trade chat would be spammed by enchanters as they had no other way of getting their services advertised,no the WoW system is far from perfect imo. On the subject of WoW do they now let you do something on the AH with your Iphone?

Did I talk anything about trade channel, NO. WoW problem is that Blizzard didn't think enchanting properly so it doesn't fit AH system, there is plenty of ways to make service type professions that fit AH system. Blizzard just failed there.

What SE are saying in that interview, at least how I read it anyway, is that if they introduced the AH at the start then that's all there would ever be and it would dictate how the economy works. Crafting is obviously going to be a huge part of this game, much more so than WoW, and I think they want the players to decide how the economy will work and not be limited to the AH by default.

How does AH limit anything? It's opposite, AH allows people buy stuff faster and compare prices.

If the AH is anything like it is in XI, then you wont see list upon list of Aegis Shields. You will see that an Aegis Shield is for sale, but you don't know what the price it's selling for, so you have to guess the price. Guess too low, and you won't work, guess too high, and you just gave the seller a bonus. A lot of the time, bazaars will actually sell for cheaper than the AH, because the sellers don't have to pay an AH fee.

There is no AH at start?!? XI system sounds more an lottery than AH. Seriously why can't they just copy WoW AH which was basicly copy of Ebay. It's almost perfect system and should be de facto in modern MMOs. Why MMO makers make easy tasks so hard still?!?

I am going to point out that EVE despite being praised as the absolute space game where you can fly anywhere you want, is taking a very sneaky approach...

Because EVE is too much pointless grinding(mining for credits) in space. It doesn't fit to Star Wars theme, it's not about working boring tasks but to have adventure. Bioware is clearly ditching SWG style "do what you want" and pushing players to adventure with friends and strangers like the movie was. Also they seem to try avoid WoW style BGs, which would be same as local space combat, because they serve no purpose in big picture. And space exploration, I think we have wrong Star franchise here. I doubt they TOR will have very dynamic world rather it will be writer driven experience to fit needs of story.

Like someone said already Bioware is aiming to please majority. And majority loves WoW style game where you don't need to spend whole day preparing, that is easy enough and FUN. Adding space combat brings just more variation to game (hopefully these will be part of story rather than generic BGs) and most likely it won't stay same whole lifetime of TOR, but it will be always designed to please majority.

I want to see a companion TOR game for Windows phone with space combat, check your auctions, work on crafting, guild chat added to this -

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/phone/default.htm

Very excited for this phone... hope the Eve app comes to it as well or maybe even Eve Online itself! Portable MMOs the next wave!

ok, ok, but it would be cool right?

Dunno about space combat, but having chat and AH in phone would be great. Because then you could get all stuff for raiding ready and inform guild mates if you are late and that stuff. I think all games should have these in them in future.

Keep mind that WP7 doesn't support sockets(aka low latency gaming) at the moment, but it does support web services and stuff like chat would be dead easy to make.

Just proves that the MMO genre has gone to crap, just all dumbed down casual games now. I want exploration and freedom in my MMO, not to be on rails and the ground game will probably hold your hand all the way through too.

Oh go back to your HC sandbox play with imaginary legos. Whole space thing is fine since it fits greatly with lore. Was Star Wars about space cadets flying around in real physics, NO! Most of stuff in movies happen in ground or inside. And it had WW2 style dogfight space combat with no real physic. Or maybe I missed episode 69 where Luke and Han cargo shittrilium around galaxy while avoiding Darth Tollman, this isn't Space Truckers Online where all you do is cargo some shit around galaxy. And all the people crying free space, do you know how anti-social is that. Having huge amount ground places and huge amount space, I guess sandbox people love that because they aren't used to people hanging around in large numbers. Reality check, how long does it take to fly from one end of galaxy to another, too f-ing long.

Overall space combat in TOR seems to be nice minigames which whole point is to get rid boring "kill x in place y" type quests, but ofc none of this matters to HC sandboxers. TOR will be good game if they stick on current path and avoid all SWG whiners, because SWG failed for reason; it sucked in the end.

Well was there story behind EQ2? I didn't saw it so maybe it was so damn shallow that all went thru it. Again just because there won't be twillek jedis in star doesn't mean there won't be them LATER. Look how many people went nuts in WoW when draenais and blood elfs came in BC and allowed people play those thru. I think most people did play atleast start areas thru. And most boring part was when you landed back to same old path that you went thru before. And this is hopefully path that Bioware can avoid. There is nothing more dull than play games like EQ2 and find out you have to go thru same shit again with new characters.

Actually this game deserves a pricing model like the orriginal Guild wars

And then making extra money by selling DLC...

Actually that what I also meant. So yes you should pay for box, but not pay for playing. I think historialic F2P used to mean that until current crapfest ruined whole idea by giving everything free and trying to trick people with cash shops.

Payed boxes (accounts) + Free playing (no monthly costs) + Cash Shop (for silly special things) + DLC for future content = Big ass $$$

And I still think purely P2P with 10$/monthly ain't gonna work. This doesn't have HC niche audience that can support it and most parents ain't too happy to pay monthly. They should make gift cards for cash shop so parents could buy that and kids can use them (instead of linking credit card to cash shop, epic failure), it works great on Habbo Hotel style kids "games".

I just have one question: Will it have real physics? I mean space combat in movies looked more air combat.

they probably will make both carbon copies in the end...to please the crowd

Highly possible. So far we know that Sith Warrior can be tank or dps depending what you choose. So if Jedi Knight is DPS and tank they pretty much are same class but with different skills. Trooper is likely to be Tank/DPS which will equal Bounty Hunter. Smuggler is DPS/CC or DPS/Healer same goes for Imperial Agent. Jedi Consular will be Healer/DPS or Healer/CC as will Sith Inquisitor. In lore point it makes sense that both Jedis and Siths have same skills. Also in PvP having fairly similiar classes on both sides helps balancing. Look WoW where they basicly allowed both sides have same classes for sake of PvP balance. None of this means they are carbon copies! You can bake cake quite a few different way and its still cake.
