Yeah, treating others like assholes is the sign of a great community....

Communities with no drama or flame-wars or "legends" are hardly communities at all. A problem with many MMOs is that they focus too much on development of YOUR character,  with goals that have very little to do with other players, and more to do with killing lifeless mobs or gaining points. This undermines the community spirit significantly.

Again, this makes no sense; youdon't want a community to be arguing all the time, it's the sign of  a bad community.  If I log onto the forums and see idiot elitists talk about how retarted and carebearish they are, do you think that's the sign of a good community?  ...no

Example, WoW - You get a group to finish a quest, you get a raid to get gear, you get an arena team to get arena points. If you fail to get gear, arena points, or a quest, you will most likely join another group/guild/team.

No different than DF; if you're in a guild that keeps losing in seiges you will move on.

Also, there is no inter-clan rivalry at all in these kinds of situation, save perhaps between the very top few. This is a mark of how isolated the community really is. Their goals are all involve advancing their own character, which is the nature of the game.

Clan rivalries are fine, but coming down to flame wars before the game is even released isn't the sign of a good community.

Now, where's imbant or orinallegg to call me a troll?!

Yeah, I've been feeling the same way; I haven't been able to jump into a game for awhile.

I've been thinking about trying L2 again; I tried it before the update but the grind was brutal.  And SgtFrog talking so greatly of FFXI has me interested in that as well :)

its a good game :)

if ya have the time for it :)

Yeah, that's the only problem; I have an addictive personality  and I don't want to spend too much time on an MMO.

My post was in response to the OP I haven't read anything by you that expressed an opinion, and if I did I wouldn't question it unless you said something ridiculous like 'WoW has more rvr and chat.'

I'm not that crazy

The irony is old rehashed ideas seem new and innovative because we haven't seen them in so long.

When did we say you can't enjoy the game?  Oh, that's right...we didn't.

I don't see why we can't debate about what you like vs. what we did not like.

When did I say you had to like it?  I didn't, but the OP still felt he needed to make this post whining about whiners, or is it whining about people who whine about whiners...

Either way it has nothing to do with the game, and this post helps to make these forums what they are known for in being more about petty crap than anything constructive about the game.

Explaining why you didn't like a game isn't 'petty crap'; it is the point of public forums: to express one's opinion.  Don't agree with this opinion?  Fine, argue about it.

Pretty crap and well thought out reasoning have big differences.  Just because you don't agree with my opinion doesn't make it 'petty crap' it means it is (obviously) a controversial issue; which could be led on with discussion.

I will voice my opinion, you will voice your opinion; none of which are petty crap.

I have been thinking more about the instances and what I look for in an MMO. I look for complete well thought out end game (content) and gameplay. I honestly dont care how I get to max level so I could live with and maybe actually like leveling alts with the system that I have read in CoS. However as for end-game the instances would have to be gone. so like everybodies special quest funnels you to the end-game where you meet up with everyone else. Then I could agree whole heartely that instances would be good because each alt you leveled could be completly different and the choices you made in your quest like changes your allignment or w/e.

I dont know if CoS is like this or not for end-game, I am just thinking how IMO instances would be acceptable to me.

Well, firstly, there is no 'max level'.  The skill levels are endless, you can level on endlessly.  Of course, after awhile it will take a logn time to level abilities, but there is no cap; therefore there would be no end game.

But, a player's story never ends, you just keep questing.  Everyone's personal story will keep going on, each one with a new, interesting quest to keep you entertained.

There are also 'uber abiltiies' for when you reach a high level for a skill...no information on that yet :(.

The instances NEVER go away though; you need them for crafting and questing.

It's very important to have popcorn within a reachable distance from your computer chair when watching debates on MMORPG.com

Way to come prepared!

There seems to be a growing trend that is happening on this forum. Whenever someone says they don't like it, the people that do like it immediately reply with one of the following:

1) Go back to WoW

2) You are just a hater

3) You are just a troll

4) You probably didn't even play it

5) You only got to level <insert level here>? it gets WAY better later on!

6) Everything you said is wrong!

7) This game is nothing like WoW!

But then when someone makes a review that is positive about the game, or a "OMG BEST MMO EVA!" all you see is:

1) Great review!

2) Unbiased and very factual!

3) Well thought out, great job!

You guys need to realize that not everyone is going to like this game, and that your opinion isn't right, it's your opinion. Just accept the fact that some people won't like it.

lol QFT.

It'll hit them sooner or later that WAR is nothing special..

Are there different colored froggies or something?

is obsessed with frogs (well, who isn't!?)

I would be willing to try it. The Dev posting here kind of makes it sound fun. I actually commend that a member of the Dev team posts on their game.

Yeah, it's nice to see developers interact with the community :)

I dont mean to rain on anybodies parade but I have heard this MMO changing great revolution story before. There has always been some implementation flaw or something to ruin the entire game. I have learned my lesson in the past about getting excited about a revolutionary game. I hope, I truly do that some company can pull it off.

Just patience.  I'm full of hope for the game, and I really think this will be a great game.  I can tell there are many doubtful peopel, though; which is understandable.

What I am extremely weary about is all the instances. I think an MMO should just trash any idea of an instance. The dev however said it’s a different type, but I just cant buy into an instance being beneficial (I like competition). To me it sounds more like an online single RPG with spots put together for social get togethers.

Well, like you said, these aren't ordinary instances.  When you enter an instance, the whole world becoms your instance; it's not just one part of the land.  There are many things to do outside of an instance as well.

Also, I, personally, do not miond the instances.  While not a hgue fan of them, I think that they will pay off for the great quests the game has.  The onyl time you need to eneter an instance is when crafting or doing a quest.  Personally, I'm glad there are instances; how realistic is it if you're doing an interesting quest when some person beats you to it (which, technically, isn't possible in CoS since every player has their very own quests).

You could have instances in CoS which come with interestign, unique, mind-using quets, or have an uninstanced grind.  Personally, I'll go with CoS.

Darkfall fans messed with the meter, now CoS pops up to 7.04.  DF fans did this whole thing, it's just how the hype meter works; it's more than just ratings..

As long as you use the extra income to hire and pay real staff instead of conning people to volunteer their time while you pocket the savings.

This makes no sense, I take my job as a voulanteer and I wouldn't want to get paid; I don't think I should get paid, either.  It's a chance to have my (inexperienced and youthful) writing pieces to be read by thousands of people.   Thousands of people, man, thousands.

I'm in highschool; pretend I wanted to join, say, the school paper.  Everyone around me, no experience, mabye an honors english class.  I egt the paper, and it says "Do you have any experience?" and now I can say "Yes, I write for a site that has hundreds of thousands of visitors per month."  If I ever want to help write for another site, I have experience.  It's just one big step above everyone else.

Not only that, but I learn a lot about writing.  I enjoy writing, and I have fun doing it while I improve my skills.

Volunteering isn't for you?  Fine, but there's no need to complain.

This isn't a review..I never said it was..

Desclaimer** this was denied by my publisher to make it so it would get published, but unfortunately they are currently looking for guides on WAR.  So if you can make on, sent it in.

Disappointed with WAR:

Intro:

I was one of the lucky ones; I was browsing the forums when Admin stated they had WAR beta keys. Since then I had kept a small eye on WAR, reading up on the game every now and then and taking a peak at the features when I was bored. I had decided that this would be the time to play the game and see if the game could live up to its hype.

After receiving my key, I went to File Planet and began downloading the game; or should I say waiting in line. After crying for a couple minutes after I realized that I had to wait in line for over 300 minutes, I decided it was time to go to bed. After all, you know the saying: “Early sleep, early morning RvR in WAR!” Okay, maybe it doesn’t go exactly like that, but it’s somewhere along those lines. As dreams of yelling “WAAAGH!” ran through my head, I drifted off to sleep and looked forward to logging into WAR tomorrow.

But, on a more serious note, I am in no way biased. I hardly followed the development of WAR, I never made any “hate” posts on WAR, I am completely neutral. I’m like the guy who needs the same exact amount of peanut butter and jelly on his sandwich (yes, I’m that neutral).

Why are you disappointed, Mike?

There will be several sections explaining my disappointments with WAR: RvR, Community, and PvE; three key parts of WAR.

Community:

The community is dead. No discussions, no people yelling “LFG level 17 Wizard”; just one quiet chat box. When I play MMOs, one of the things I love is interacting with other players I don’t know and having good, lengthy, interesting discussions about the game and its features; unfortunately, none of this happens in WAR. I haven’t been able to hold a discussion with anyone; I don’t even think I’ve seen more than three people actually say something, let alone having a lengthy discussion.

Even when players have questions, they go unanswered; no matter where you are, it is hard to get help from the community. I have asked several questions, all of which were ignored. You’ll have to join a guild if you want some kind of constant communication, as well as some help.

PvE:

The PvE disappointment isn’t much to explain, it’s just that is didn’t “wow” me at all. The combat was slow paced and uninteresting, I felt myself drifting off to sleep after 5-10 minutes. There was no real challenge, I found myself just button mashing the same fireball spell over and over.

The AI for the PvE wasn’t all that impressive, just the same old mobs you see in any game. Then again, I suppose you could say WAR is a PvP based game, which is where my next disappointment comes in.

RvR:

The RvR was probably one of the largest disappointments in WAR for me. When I first read about the RvR in WAR, I was excited. I expected a game that would have great PvP, PvP that actually had an effect on the game, and maybe even that excitement which I so desperately long for in an MMO. Unfortunately, I was not pleased with the results.

One thing that really peeves me about the RvR is that there is NO death penalty. This takes away the risk of the PvP; no more sitting at the edge of your chair yelling profanities as your character is killed. There’s none of that risk in WAR, you can just run in and die over and over (and people actually do this) without worrying about death (I’m assuming some people enjoy that, but I find it too simple for my tastes).

Now, without risk, you would assume that no risk = no reward? WRONG. WAR throws experience and money at you like crazy when you’re in an RvR battle. Sometimes you don’t even have to be fighting someone; you’ll just get renown points and some brass coins for doing nothing. Now, from my view, this is a bad thing; I don’t want rewards without any risk. It’s just too simple for my tastes, if I am going to receive rewards, then I should be put through a challenge do so; this ‘no risk’ thing just isn’t for me.

Besides that, I also saw the lack of teamwork. Especially on the order side, I saw the lack of players sticking together and discussing strategic ideas about how they would take down their opponents. This reflects about how dead the community is, since I don’t see anyone discussing plans, ideas, or recommendations about how to take down the other side.

As well as the lack of teamwork, there is also a lack of strategic plans; everyone sticking together and attacking the other side is NOT strategic. The WAR RvR doesn’t make you use your mind; it doesn’t make you wonder about your next move, thinking that your next move might be costly, instead, you just kill players without thinking.

So overall, I was very disappointed with the RvR. I love PvP, but WAR’s PvP is, and I can’t believe I’m using this term, “carebearish”. There’s no way to deny it, you are just given rewards without any real risk. I expected something great, and I wasn’t given anything near that.

Conclusion:

I will not be playing WAR when it releases; I will continue my search for something new and innovative, since WAR clearly is not. In fact, I couldn’t have said it any better than the forum user Abrahmm put it: “I didn't think it was a "breath of fresh air", but a "breath of the same air I've been breathing for 3 years". I found it to be the same boring format with a few sprinkles of new ideas. I really don't think it deserves the hype or rave reviews it has been getting.” I agree 100% with what this user said, and it is what I was trying to get across with this article. WAR is an okay game, and seems like it will be polished for release, but it is nothing special.

Cheers.

I'm not leaving, I still love the site.

Although I've lost the will to post.  I'm done posting for awhile, I'll just read the forums.
