"...nothing more than a waste of time."  HAHAHA, oh man, thank you so much for that comment, I needed a good laugh today.  Playing an online video game isn't a waste of time at all... but playing on a co-op server is?  LMAO, whoo, funny stuff.  What is the basis of your statement that it is a waste of time?  No RvR?  Lower pop?  Playing on Gareth is a quality way to spend your time???  Do you have a stand-up act or just write jokes in your spare time that isn't being spent on Gareth?

Give the guy some facts and let him make up his own mind.  Everyone expects and wants something diff. out of the game(s) they play.  It's awesome you are willing to give him a hand starting out, but making a statement like that with no reason isn't helping anyone.

3. Is there anything important that I should know about or not to forget to do?

Don't forget to buy back your CON if you die.

Seriously tho, glad to see you are enjoying the game!  This game isn't dead like so many people try to make it out to be, and every new person keeps it on life support.

Sorry I am coming into this thread so late... unlike DAoC   Anyway, I think the Origins server (which I bashed to death when the FAQ came out) will not only save DAoC, it will bring some new players as well.  Anyone who played before clustering (which hurt the game as much as ToA IMO) can remember the "realm hate" and desire to kill those other realms.  It was more than just pride at times, it was a good old fashion fight just because you really didn't like the other realms.  That is one thing you will NEVER come close to with any other game.  Sure, there are moments in all PvP games where you get that
"rush", but honestly, don't you old time DAoC vets agree that the whole RvR set-up made you want to fight for your realm?  I 100% agree with the posters who stated that they hate the new archery system and the "changes" that they are adding with the Origins server, it is a misleading name for sure... however, I've had a change of heart and will be giving it a shot and will be bringing 6 people with me.  Am I interested in the server and the cool additions/system?  Hell no.  I just know that having a populated server and playing with people who are *fighting* the other realms is going to be a blast!!!

Also, I don't know if anyone has noticed, but the subscription system has changed.  It used to be handled on the log-in "pop-up", it's now web based with links to all the EA/Mythic games right on the same page.  I'm not saying it is proof or anything... but it sure appears that they are getting ready for a multi-game subscription system.  So WAR might help DAoC like so many people have stated.

Alb wiz and/or mins.

I'm glad to see the old "realm hate" is back, lol.  This server is a great idea no matter how well it works out IMO.  Fighting for "your" realm is what made this game so great... we are months away from it being launched and already picking fights

Also, like the old days (I played on Pellinor) having a massive diff. in realm pop just makes you want to win even more and you will see a lot of late night and off hour raids as well as playing together as a realm, not just going out in groups.  I can tell you now there will be a LOT of huge battles on this server.

Another few reasons the Co-op server is a good place to start your DAoC adventure:

1. Playing all the diff. classes from all 3 realms while still being able to play with a guild or friends and share a house/vault is a major bonus for learning what you want to play as a main if you do move on to a RvR server.

2.  Everything is so cheap on Gaheris.  With all the good drops being farmed etc. you can find nearly anything on the housing merchants for dirt cheap.  Also most of the player base there has more $ than they know what to do with so selling drops for $ isn't high on the list of things to do.

3.  No fear of messing up your toon or gear.  No need to worry that your spec isn't "uber" or your temp is weak or you are beating up a purple con drop (if it gives you the bonuses wear it, you can replace it for cheap).  Worry about learning the game, then all these "details".

4.  Nearly everyone who plays on Gaheris has RvR toons so finding a guild or crafters/players/groups on a RvR server will be easy,

5.  Learning the siege system in the frontiers is a lot easier when you don't have to worry about being rolled... plus the "PvE keep siege" is a blast and honestly all DAoC players should give it a try at least once.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I agree that Gaheris (co-op) is a great place to *start* as a brand new player.  Not to say that staying there for good is the way to go, but learning the system and layout while not having the worry of "screwing" up your spec or temp or having the $ to get decent gear is a HUGE plus.  Playing a few classes from each realm also gives you a good idea about what realm you want to play as your main... and being able to do that on the same server with the same guild or "groupmates" is another major plus.  Also, with the Origins server coming soon, creating a "main" or RvR toon that you may be leaving might be tuff.  No matter what, I hope you love the game!

Well, I know I won many years ago by not playing that *thing* anymore.  Don't let me slow down the comedy however, you all continue to act like you are in the know and everyone is wrong.  I will continue to read and laugh a few mins. daily when I'm not out actually enjoying life.

Nah, I think more than anything it's the outdated info on the 79648643975409765 DAoC sites out there that has him confused.  That and most MMOs you have to download the game and Xpacs from the website, which I for one think is more than a bit odd.

The PvE-style keep raids in the frontier are a blast as well.  The pop is a bit low, but if you go to DF or the capital cities you will always run into people.  Also, I can't begin to explain how cheap the drops are on the CMs on the co-op server.  You can keep your stats capped all the way to 50 without even trying... not that you really need to worry about having "uber" gear there.

One word of warning tho, if you get into some of the higher XP groups be ready to actually work, lol.  Some of those co-op players are hardcore when it comes to XP.  If you arn't pulling or killing you are doing something wrong!

There is no more 3 part catacombs client.  There are 3 clients left; catacombs, DR, and LoTM... that's it, each has it's own single download.

1st download the free trial, it is the catacombs client.  Done and done, very simple.  Log in and right on the patcher/log-in pop-up you can get the other clients and activate them if you so choose.  It is by far the easiest "upgrade" system of any MMO.

Again, trial = catacombs.  There is no ToA client.  There is no graphics update.

Very little in the way of RP value.  They just help you regen hits and power between fights.  They do last a while, not sure the exact time.  They are useful when fighting mobs that put a beating on ya or you might have to kite... less downtime is never a bad thing ya know!!

You will have no problem soloing.  Of course some classes are better, but the game has really been changed to make it a solo PvE, group PvP game.  That said, the best XP is still getting in a group and camping some nice high purples non-stop, but soloing from 1-50 is really painless.  Also, I'm glad to see you are starting from scratch with your new toon.  I'm a PvE junkie myself so I do that with all mine.  I'm just throwing this out there as a suggestion, but if you want to explore and really "experience" DAoC you may want to try out the co-op server.  Having so many areas to explore, freedom of going into the frontiers, Darkness Falls always open and free from greifers, and all the "uber" drops are always very cheap in the housing area/consignment merchants.  If you enjoy soloing but still want to do some end-game type raids co-op is a great place.  Just a suggestion.

The tinderboxes (campfires) drop often and there are always a few in the housing area for sale.  They are not nearly as useful as they used to be as the regen rates out of combat are very fast now.  They are still handy, but not something you really need before you go out XPing.

There really isn't a "best" place to solo.  Any RvR zone is a good choice because of the bonuses, but IMO the instance dungeons are the last resort for XP as the XP is less than any same level camp.  That said, you can still make very decent gold running IDs if you can stomach the extreme bordom... the painful, mindnumbing, horrid, bordom.  Also, zero drops in IDs... stick to dungeons and world-camps.

I don't play ATM.  I usually play for a few months at a time then take a break.  I would suggest checking out the classic cluster, and if you are still playing in a few months looking into the "Origins" server which is really going to be 99% RvR focused with a modified old frontier and no X-pacs... other than leaving in the races for some reason???   /shrug

I've found this awesome new experience called "outside".  So yea, not playing any of the crap out there right now.  Nothing really on the horizon that looks worth spending either time or $ on so who knows.

Sadly it looks like everything is going toward PvP and instanced/solo PvE... man I miss some good old fashion grouping!

Well, the Old Frontiers will not be coming back intact.  Straight from the herald:

"...this server will also provide capturable camps, small towers, and outposts..."

"We are also considering adding a village or two to each Realm’s RvR region"

"Modified monster camps..."

Origins my ass.  Also including the races from expansions but not the expansion areas like SI sure will;  "...return DAoC to the great game experience it was in 2001/2002."

Why they tried to sell this as anything other than a "New RvR" server is insane.    Removing nearly all PvE aspects of the game and making every change to cater to RvR built around an extremely modified dated version of the game and calling it "DAoC: Origins" makes no sense and is very misleading.

Side note about wanting to "...go back to using their old exploits", if that were the case these pathetic gimps could go back to the freeshard circle-jerks they came from.

1.  You don't need to buy anything 'til you get into the 30's, and honestly you don't "need" to buy any then.  They have a "package" offer to get both expansions together so if you do plan on upgrading down the road that's the way to go... but unless you get hooked again I wouldn't worry about it... just my 2 cents.

2. As far as being gear dependent goes same rules apply as day one really... casters = cash cow, lol.  With housing and the number of drops selling there you really shouldn't worry about not being able to get gear... play what class you will enjoy.  Balance is an issue that will differ from one player to the next, however there really isn't any one class that stands out as a "don't bother" class... this may have changed or will change overnight of course, lol.

3.  The classic servers are all clustered now, playing on one is the same as playing on another.  With that said I would pick Ector since it is the least populated, just for ease of finding a house lot.

4.  I'm one of those rare players who likes to PvE so I am the wrong person to ask about fast leveling... but I will say the XP has been cranked up to insane levels and takes WAY less time that it used to.  Soloing to 50 is even quick now.

I take back all the positive things I have said about this server.  It looks as tho EA/Mythic is going to toy with this great idea until it is a busted pile of crap... like the "normal" servers are now.

If the OF server can support itself there will be VERY little need to pour resources into the game.  That and the rumor of a multigame sub. package would lead most people to believe DAoC will live for a while.  Why pull the plug on a game that needs zero in the way of patching, updating, etc. and is making money and has a decent player base?  The "let it die" comments are a joke from the fanboys with the "I don't play it so it sucks" mindset.

To anyone who mentioned DAoC and F2P, I really hate you .

Seriously tho, the way DAoC is set up as far as PvP there won't be any rampant griefage like you have in EVERY F2P game... but lets wait till the OF server is out before we cast judgement on the life of this game.  I leveled a toon on the classic server cluster all the way to 50 just in the BGs just a couple months ago so it's not dead... yet.
