I don't blame Themepark.  Even in DnD, you were still fundamentally in the world of your DM.  He/She had a design in place that, generally, the players were to follow.  Sure, their are some players that will buck that and do what they want; but the vast majority took the hints and direction of the DM and followed the "set path".

A good DM does not create a "path" for players to take, but creates a world of choices and consequences with multiple paths to take and even more consequences from choosing each path that alter individual character and group outcomes farther into the story. A good DM creates an experience that can take on a life of its own based on choices made!

Looking back on MMO genre and its recent slump, one has to ask what is the reason MMORPG reached the stuck point it find itself now.

It is easy to blame WOW and Themepark mentality.  But where lies the real problem ? In RPG.

The original MMOs like Ultima Online or Everquest were very open. Their only resemblance to traditional RPG games was the character building. It is only when Blizzard decided to improve the formula and bring important part of RPG experience : questing , that MMORPG as we know it now was born.

This RPG formula is improved among with everything else and today we have games like ESO or KOTOR that can stand without shame beside single player RPGs in any way. Or even some that are innovating RPG experience like GW2

And this is the problem. RPG gameplay became the shackles of MMO.

MMO should be massive social experience. A virtual world. But RPG is single or at best small group experience. Completely opposite to what MMO should acomplish.

Only by renouncing RPG will MMO truly soar forward.

And we are begining to see emergence of this "non rpg" games.

Elite, Star Citizen, Minecraft, Survival games ...

New genre is emerging. MMO without RPG , and it was about the damn time.

Wow, just...... ummmm..... wow.

I will not take much effort to even discuss such inaccurate and foolish thinking. At this point I believe you might believe that the moon is made out of cheese and that the USA never had a lunar landing and that aliens were a part of the JFK assassination.

RPG is what gave birth to the virtual worlds that you call MMOs. Those nerdy groups that sat around tables creating characters is what spawned the birth of what would eventually blossom into MMOs.

I am glad to see this game getting some of the attention and support. I have no doubt it will be a fun game ... for some. The more I research the game the more I can see this will just be a hybrid MOBA and not what I enjoy in a MMORPG. With the gender locked classes it is just one more thing that points me elsewhere.

This poll really needed to have different choices. Especially based on how many took the generic answer route.

I choose to play male and female characters both, but definitely not because I am expecting players to treat me differently. In ArcheAge I made both a female and male Firran character and ended up deleting the male because of the animations with movement and combat. I also liked the greater details the females had. In WoW I made mostly Blood Elf females because the males we too feminine and their movement was awkward and jokes weren't funny. In FFXIV I made mostly male characters because SE did a great job with the male models and especially the Miqo'te.

It is very tough to find that so called "Perfect" MMO, but there is always a choice out there. Many listed are great options, with GW2, ESO, Darkfall, and even ArcheAge (I know I will get flack on this one) as good choices based on some of the desired features you listed. Another one you may want to check into is Life is Feudal: http://lifeisfeudal.com/. This one is still early alpha/beta and is not a complete MMO yet, but it has much of the open world, sandbox feel to it. Yet another is Origins of Malu: http://www.originsofmalu.com/. Again this one is in early beta and both are on Steam.

Even though there are a lot of doomsayers out there crying out that the MMO genre is dying, there are many great games out there and many in development.

Grouping tool is still not working. It has been broken since November and they are actively ignoring all posts on their own forum, about it.

Since patch 1.6 I have used the LFG tool many times with success. I was surprised to see it working for me because it had been broken for soo long.

True flying mounts in this game is terrible, much like many other things they've done.

Agreed.

Why would you put a true flying mount in a game with the setup they have. This could hurt more than help the game. Either way from what I have been reading in many posts it seems the game is greatly in need of players, not sure this will bring them back.

WE HIT 50+ members last night, opening our Guild Store for our Brotherhood to trade!

Each division of the guild community continues to grow our foundations in RP are forming with a core base of players joining the guild to develop the backstory.

With about 5 days in to the recruiting push we are excited to see such positive response to the guild.

About 3-4 days in now from creation and we are coming close to hitting our milestone mark of 50 players to open the guild store.

Currently each division of game play is still in its infancy and seeks experienced players in each division (PvE, PvP, and RP) to help establish a good foundation for the community.

Remember the fact that the team failed to produce and release what was promised last time during their first failed crowd funding. The ideas and concepts are interesting, but any hopes of McQuad pulling it off at this point will be interesting to say the least.

I have little confidence in the possibilities of it happening and do not see myself supporting this monetarily.

After seeing a few videos for the game I am less and less excited for the game.

Yeah i'm not excited at all for a lobby pvp based mmo that has full loot. This will only have a niche to the hardcore pvp players which is not a whole lot of players. I'm sure this game will not be so popular 3 months after release.

Really don't get the logic behind this view. Do you believe Pantheon will do any better by chance?

Very nice.... you are being optimistic that Pantheon will even make it past closed beta.

No.

I'm a powergamer. Ultimately I dont care for lore and stuff. Thats all just fluff to me.

Foremost I want to play my character optimally. And I want it to be really hard, if not impossible, what exactly "optimally" would be. I want it to be a real intellectual challenge.

Thus a game that doesnt give me the information I need to optimize my character build and playstyle is definitely not for me.

Thats one of the things I loved about Vanguard, you could think endlessly about how to play your character the best way.

Oh, so you would not just go to the wiki and find the optimal build for your character?

If you won't, you can be sure the next "Powergamer" will.

Wiki this, Google that, Youtube the other thing............

There use to be a time you actually played the game and found details IN THE GAME (shocker I know).

Sarcasm aside, I do believe having more information and numbers is not what kills the fascination of the game. If done right and designed well it only adds to the fascination of the game. At present I will point to the developers of Crowfall and the fascination they are creating with their game. I know it is early, but they are creating what I like to call "healthy buzz". Another would be Camelot Unchained.

What kills fascination for a game, for me, is toxic communities, horrible content that has little lore and story to increase the depth of the world I play in, poorly designed UIs that get in my way more than help, unoptimized game engines that ruin my immersion and etc....

Well, to be fair the point I was making is that they have a free access of nearly 2 weeks just before the financial report.  Those free access players are now classed as subscribed.

A p2p game needing f2p players to pump up "sub" numbers in a financial report to investers is kinda odd, maybe it's just me that thinks so.  Since you didn't reply about that I assume you agree.

Your premise is flawed from the outset. There is no signs whatsoever to indicate that free access players are given the subscribed status, as simply being able to play the game is a completely different matter than being subscribed to it. With your presupposition you have no grounds to make such claim. In addition SE's fiscal year ends on March 31st, 2015. How you came to the conclusion that SE can use """"subscriber numbers"""" of February 27th to March 9th to indicate subscriber numbers at the end of March is completely without reason.

I didn't reply to your premise because it is complete nonsense. You have absolutely no argument that there actually exists a causal relationship between a free week following a well-received patch and investor meeting a month later. All you have is the knowledge that these two events happen within a month of each other. From this information you came to the conclusions that a) free access players are now somehow classified as subscribers and b) the free week is done for the investor meeting and nothing more, even when we are approaching a major expansion release that is an extremely important time for any MMORPG (a detail that you conveniently chose to ignore in your initial post as well as the one I am replying to. How surprising).

To end this farce of yours investors care about annual revenue numbers, not a non-figure like subscribtion numbers within a two-week-period. It is simply not relevant to the degree you make it out to be unless the sub numbers in itself has value. Which is true for the WoW players feeling threatened by FFXIV and clinging to the only reliable strawman they can use in their defense, but not so much for financial investors.

Maybe this is all an Illuminati conspiracy? Let me go get my tinfoil hat just in case...

Well of course they are, the game isn't free to play so they have to be given subscriber access to be able to play, unless you're saying all subscribers are not paying for this 10 days?.  This is pretty basic logic XD

They are also doing all this in March jsut before the financial report, the free to play weekend is nearly 2 weeks.  They have never done one this long before.

1 +1 = 2 You don't have to say tinfoil when it's this obvious.

You are aware that the latest 4 million registered user number (an increase of about 2 million from previous numbers) is NOT including trial/free player accounts? Even with the trial players included an increase of almost 2 million or more over previous numbers is impressive. Sure about 3-5 % of that number will end up in subscriptions, but it is that many more people checking the game out and taking the time to play and more than likely talk about it to others.

This sounds great and appeals to many of us as long time MMO gamers....... wait for it......

BUT

We are dealing with an MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online). How are these troops going to communicate with each other and organize? The traditional fail text chat way or will there be innovative voice chat options to rally all together or a new game feature that pulls it together? Much of my experience with open world type pvp is the massiveness of it requires people to listen to a few and organize... in most cases there is no organize, just groups running around doing their thing. Sometimes it works and most times it turns into a rage fest of why no one would listen.

Maybe this company will, with those brilliant minds figure out a better way to organize massive amounts of players to do world team events(?). tic toc.......

<3 FFXIV - just wish I had the time for a P2P MMO, I just wouldn't get my $15 worth.

With more and more MMOs coming to XB1, I'm still hopefully eventually they'll make a deal and we'll get FFXIV on XB1.

Maybe with the new Windows 10 + XB1 integration stuff they won't have a reason not to anymore.

About the only reason, as i understand things, that FFXIV;ARR isn't on XB1, is because Microsoft won't allow it, its worth bearing in mind that even on the PS3/4 FFXIV;ARR doesn't require PS+ (unless thats changed again recently!). Personally i think it would do wonders for the console community as a whole to have less segregation in games, take out the whole PS4 vs XB1 argument, and give console players a chance to play together without any antagonism, if FFXIV;ARR can be run on a  PS3 then there is no good reason it can't work on both the XBOX360 and XB1. Windows 10 is largely irrelevant in this particular argument tbh, its really about Microsoft in general.

Keep in mind that Final Fantasy 11 and 14 both have cross platform play also. So your PC and console players are all on the same servers. I wish more companies would realize this is a huge factor for many. I have many friends and family that are console players and I am a PC gamer (always have been). It is nice to be able to play together.

Isn't this the game that has already failed to meet a few of it's goals and dates for release to it's supporters already?

Don't get me wrong I love what McQuad tried to do with Vanguard, but it just seems like this company has failed to meet expectations one too many times already for many to place trust in them accomplishing much until they put some solid proof of product out.

What exactly does wow do better than ffx1v?

PVP. -  FF MMOs have never focused on PvP. Most do not play the game for that purpose.

Combat. - Combat is what you prefer... both MMOs have a solid combat system.

Raids.  - This is about 3% of the total player population in WoW or most MMOs

Community. -  FFXIV has WoW beat for it's community, much smaller than WoW but 100 times better.

Balance. -  FFXIV has very nice balance in their game. Classes play well and compliment each other. WoW keeps simplifying and removing options from their balance... oh wait they have never balanced their classes.

Game Engine. -  FFXIV since the revamp has one of the most solid game engines in any MMO! PERIOD.

Number of players. - LOL.... I hope this wasn't meant to be serious. I know many MMOs with small number players that are solid games. Besides isn't an actual "thing that Blizzard or SE does.

Loot progression. - Not everyone cares about the loot rat race. Most of the gear in FFXIV is gathered through crafting.

Leveling quests. - Are you including two ideas here? The quests in both games are good. Neither game does questing much different. The story in FFXIV is more important and maintained throughout your leveling experience.

I could go on.

FFXIV since Yoshi's revamp is one of the best overall performing MMOs on the market. You may not prefer the combat style or something else about it, but the fact remains that the game engine and coding used for the revamp has made the game performance solid. I played for a long time after the relaunch and during the early days. Since relaunch there is little performance, game engine and user interface wise I would ever complain about in this game.

The gamepad performance and programing alone is miles ahead of any other MMO on the market.... oh .... wait you can't play most MMOs with a gamepad can you?
