I have come back to this game for at least 3 betas (US version) and I have played it on the Russian version previously. I have logged more than an hour in the game, but I do share your impressions and feelings of the game.

I really want to like this game, because it does offer some great game play concepts..... and there in lies the problem.... they are great concepts. The game itself has a "been there, done that" feel and just makes it really hard to get past the first 30 levels in hopes of something more exciting and fun after.

The feel of the UI is something out of 2004, early EQ days and leaves little flexibility for people like me who want to tweak it to my play style (I do see an addon file so maybe modders will fix this). The combat is laggy and unresponsive at times. After I switched to a private gaming server it got better, but Trion/XLgames has not put much into latency response into their servers.

Like I said I really want to like this game, but so far it is not a top pick.

So, let me get this straight...

The weakest part of the game is the questing.  That's been the universal opinion of everyone who has played it.  Even the people who liked the game.  

So, as a developer, you decide to make the weakest part of your game mandatory for the first 30 levels in order to learn the core gameplay features?  

Worst game design ever.  That would be like Turbine saying, "You know, our PvP really sucks, but we're going to force players to do it for the first 30 levels in order to learn about the combat needed for PvE while questing."

Never said it was good design or wasnt.What I am saying is that the real game opens at about level 30.Whether you want to get there or not is up to you.Those who are determined to try the high level content should take these peoples negative reviews after playing a couple hours of beta with the smallest grain of salt.

You can rant and yell about how good the game gets after 30, but if most can't make it to 30 because of how bad the game is until then it won't be worth it. People will not endure punishment for 30 levels in hopes it gets better!

This ... you would think that people would see for what it is.... a money grab on the hype train. How is an already released game in multiple countries still in beta for a port to the west????? It should never take this long for a competent development company to translate and port an already working MMO to the west!!

This is a horrible trend that greedy companies are exploiting to cash in on a hyped game. It will get worse as the greed grows and the worst part of it all is that the game quality isn't getting better.

We have the ability to play these games differently, yet we chose not to and complain that they aren't different. I would love to see a change in mentality that would actually allow for different types of MMOs to exist. I would love to see more sandboxy games that don't rely heavily on quests or pvp. I'm not huge on crafting, but it would also be nice to see more interesting crafting systems in these games. Though again, if it's too intricate, people don't seem to bother using them.

- Though, I will also say that I've met a lot of really great people through these games. So it really has been a mixed bag. I just wish the status quo was a bit different. Maybe in a few years.

Seeing you brought up FFXI... let's continue along that road. I miss what FFXI offered when it came to community and communication. People took the time to talk to one another, not troll the chat-ways. Modern MMO games and players have created a toxic community of griefers and trolls that do not even try to fit into a game world nor be a part of the game world.

Skill chains in FFXI were nice... LOTRO also had a similar system.

Gliders I accept and understand in the world .... it fits. Skateboards and cars do not! 

Either way I have tested this game and just find nothing that pulls me in and keeps me there. It all has the been there done that feel. Now with Skateboards and cars it just breaks any feeling of immersion I could have had.

There are so many things that break the ES feeling but for the sake of brevity let us choose the worst offender. The real ES has a true classes system and does not force you to spend points in a tree to let one use the good skills. This for me was the biggest game breaker. The freedom is gone. I am not sure if they changed this but if they did then I might consider trying it again.

Skyrim had talent perks... you had to point in one talent to progress into something you maybe liked better. Oblivion had similar... your point is not valid. Skyrim had perks and Oblivion had favored attributes... needless to say it was a good job at allowing over all freedom of choice.

This is an MMO with PvP.... there had to be some restrictions to attempt some form of balancing... the variables for open choice of whatever would be mind-numbing! If this ruins it for you as en Elder Scrolls game then you can always keep playing the latter, but I would be shocked to see a system like that in ESO, nor did I expect it in the first place.... this does not ruin the Elder Scrolls experience I have in ESO one bit.

I have no idea what you are talking about here. I have been playing on and off since beta. Early on the game was very buggy. Since the last 2 patches the game has run fantastic.. The video you linked has little to no relevance to the state of the game. The Dye system is up and in game... many loving it! The Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood was introduced..... along with the justice system!

Game engine and phasing issues have been addressed continually and the game plays and performs very smooth.

I am and have enjoyed myself in ESO more than any other MMO.

I have had many people say this almost verbatim and it does not help. No it does not feel like Skyrim nor does it feel like Daggerfall or Morrowind or Oblivion. It failed to capture the essence of what ES is in general. IMO it is not that it is an online game vs an offline game lost in translation issue. I got the feeling when playing the game that the person that made the game had never even played Elder Scrolls. All they did was copy their neighbors term paper (the lore) and slapped an Elder Scrolls sticker on and said, "Look it is an Elder Scrolls Game because the name is in the title!" Would, coulda Shoulda, Bethesda alone should have made this title and it would be on the top of the charts. This I am 100% sure of. You cannot sell genius.

Zenimax company is Bethesda. This was not contracted outside of the company. Zenimax owns Bethesda and has been involved with Elder Scrolls since the beginning. 

I see many say it failed to capture what Elder Scrolls is..... please tell me your concept of what the essence of Elder Scrolls is?

But for anyone that had a realistic understanding that in an MMO some aspects of a single player game would not translate well then you went into it and appreciated all that Zenimax and Bethesda did to make it Elder Scrolls Online. The lore is there and done better than any MMO out to date (except for maybe FFXIV). The exploration is there.... I love the little events that trigger as you explore the world.... just wish there was more variety. 

Justice system is in, as is Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood. The dye system lets your character stand out. You can become a Vampire or Werewolf.... hmmm feels like an Elder Scrolls game to me. Oh and many of the quests give you choices of the moral kind.... I haven't researched them enough to see (if any) the impact each one may have as you progress, but it is nice to not feel like there is only one choice in finishing a story.

Trolling is more being obnoxious towards other people to get a response, that in turn is continued by the person trolling. What you ask about here is more grieving and is still not a welcomed form of behavior in gaming.

Based on this forum post and the one in the comment above, with some quick math and most people to get the same quality of life in their game play versus a subscription based game will be paying well over $100.00 a month for similar features. Good luck with that.

Amazing! SOE like many other developers and publishers are chasing the monitizing of Betas and now this hopefully is a sign that people see through the money grab of what use to be a way to get good feedback during DEVELOPMENT STAGES.

I am all for a company being able to make money and a profit. I will support any company that shows ethical ways of doing that. For me these types of attempts to garnish extra income are just wrong. Now you have other games doing it to the point that a simple localization goes into alpha, beta and "buy my founder's pack" stages.

It's not about lvl 50, it's about the mass land grab early on in the game. Who is going to win those? In fact, it's especially P2W when most players aren't yet 50.

The well organized guilds who use the CS or those who don't?

And I don't want to hear what's possible, About how there will be individual battles of well organized F2P or Patron only guilds. We all know its about big picture. And in the big picture, control of resources will be the organized guilds who spend money. That will be the rule and not the exception.

Look, I'm not "hating" on this game because I want to see it fail. I was looking forward to it, but I don't like the monetization scheme. Your Alpha experience is great because you can experience the game much closer to it's full potential. However, I'm absolutely convinced, your present experience will be vastly diminished once the CS goes live.

It will take months before things settle down - early land grab guilds will not last and will be dominated by better guilds no matter how much money they throw at the game.

In the end skill, organization, communication win.

I know MMOs are about living in a fantasy land, but you my man are taking that to an extreme... Money and power will always be the winning factor whether it be in  real world or fantasy. The way this game is setup up right now caters to those who are willing to put the time (too much time) and money into.

Time will tell for this game. I hope it does well because some of the concepts are good. I for one do not see a healthy future as the game is playing out right now and I have lost confidence in Trion with the many fail changes in Rift that only encourage more people to leave the game since F2P.

Why Blizzard has so little respect for their own product is a mystery to me, seriously, you need to add a new playable race and all you can think of is holy aliens that used to be demons (Eredar) but the lore got changed for them being first holy (Draenei) before making them demons even if they originally were demons before lore change, and also a completely different race name wise (the original Draenei) that got a huge facelift to make them look sexy because for some reason they had to use name Draenei for this completely new race too, which then landed into Azeroth in their space ships?


And that's only one thing, there's this same crap worth a book if someone wanted to write all the stupid lore decisions down.


Oh wait, I forgot, it's supposed to be cool, Cartman cool.

Blizzard ruined their own lore.... or their twisted version of a bunch of lore from Norse Mythology to Egyptian history and myth to whatever else they wanted to throw into the WoW part of the franchise. You have every mentionable character from Star Trek, Star Wars, D&D and the list goes on... in the game in some fashion. WoW has never taking it's lore very serious.

Don't get me wrong... I love the MMO and have played it over a 8+ year span (on and off), but for anyone to actually take their lore serious??? I find that funny. The movie would be better of as a complete CGI film like Final Fantasy. I may watch it when it hits the Hulu or Netflicks.

I still don't know how to feel about feels like a unicorn woke up in my living room after a hard night of clubbing and partly vomit/shit a rainbow that became a video game.

After playing the Beta this is how I felt also. It made me think of what WoW would have been if it was a Sci-Fi MMO.

As far as the complaints of it being hard...... maybe at higher levels it does (?) because I found it too easy and simplistic. The combat was boring and predictable with too many graphic tells and combat timers that made it east to avoid special abilities. At one point I let my cat mash my keys while I finished my sandwich (not really but I am sure I could have).

Game really needs influx of new players.

I know the game died in population from launch numbers, but it is still crowded in many of the cities at lower levels. I recently came back to the game after a little break, until they fixed some of the lag/hitch issues and I am loving it now that the fps doesn't tank during combat and certain zones.


I run into people all over the place.... so it doesn't feel like a wasteland at all to me. 

Enjoyed the article.... and .... YES it is worth buying and subscribing to play. I have enjoyed most of my time in the game and look forward to the constant updating Zenimax has been doing to improve the game. Can't wait for Dark Brotherhood and Thieves guild quest lines!!

One thing that I enjoy greatly is the fact when I complete a quest line in a zone I don't go back to the same bosses and enemies waiting to recycle combat with me! The world does change with each victory one!

Dude are you brain damaged? This is a free to play game with an entry fee of 150$, an endgame locked down by an ingame timer that dictate how much you can do everyday and can be expended by spending some real money in it? ....sigh

There is no entry fee - the game at launch is free to play.

1000s of beta keys were given for free


$150 is for CLOSED ALPHA access (of which you get $120 back in credit - so it's really $30)


I always find everyone's viewpoint interesting on topics of this sort. When you consider that any money you put towards an MMO nets you absolutely NOTHING in terms of ownership it puts a slightly different spin on cost and value. Don't get me wrong over the years I have  put thousands of dollars towards these types of games and enjoyed it, but value is in the "eye of the beholder" because in the long run you own nothing in most of these virtual worlds! That maxed level toon you spent months and even years to gear and develop is not owned by you!

Soooo... that said, if you have no issue putting $150.00 into an Alpha game then by all means go for it. I played the Russian released version of this game for months and lost interest after that. I find more value in a subscription model than f2p money grabs.
