so, what were you doing searching the DF forums?

why do i get this feeling the whole mortal online story  is a hoax?

Aren't community managers supposed to check out content BEFORE they are published ?

At best this is failed Quality Assurance, at worst a PR campaign gone horrible wrong.

Anyways, using one game editorial to talk about another game isn't making sense to me.

Unless someone is scared their stock swill not be worth much in august...

Well, he apologized here http://forums.ageofconan.com/showpost.php?p=1627114&postcount=103

Of course this was sanctioned by Funcom, who are you trying to fool? They even had the editorial up for a short time on the Age of Conan main website. Then they for some reason removed it.=)

 http://www.warcry.com/articles/view/editorials/mitrasmethod/3542-Age-of-Conan-Editorial-Piercing-the-Darkness

This editorial is pure fear. And a very low self-esteem in your own product.

TBH the Editorial is not controlled by Funcom and the Community Manager of AoC forums explained that he removed it from the main site page once he became aware of its content.

In short, the Warcry stuff is not official Funcom material and opinions

Dark and Light had,

A huge amount of features, among them was, cities build by players, politics with nobility and kings and stuff player made, sandbox, complete freedom bla bla bla... looks a lot like Darkfall

The beta from DnL was delayed time after time, like DF

They made the game in a small company in Reunion Island, DF isnt in an island but the similarities are not far fetched

DnL had a huge amount of rabid fanboys that would defend it at any cost, DF mmm no comment, people just need to check some posts in here

DnL had a total lack of information coming from the devs, DF has the same problem

DnL never got to a game convention... DF probably wont go either (and hasnt been)

DnL development circle took 4 years +, DF already beat that and is going on and on...

Should i continue or do you think there is enough similarities?

Didn't D&L actually make it to release? Crappy release for sure, but it made it. So not vaporware, just flop

All those companies you have named, bar Adventurine have released games before, including mmorpg's.

Adventurine with 26 people on the team or whatever, without much prior experience who say they can do all the things they say and people still wait years on and on, what do you do at that point?

Game-development is not rocket-science to require vast amounts of resources and facilities; As far as creativity and ideas are concerned, a small team will probably be more effective than a large team, simply due to the fact that communication is more direct between the developers. You can see previous examples of unknown companies that made a name for themselves by publishing very successful games - Piranha Bytes with the Gothic series is a good example.

What a small developing company will suffer from, however, is the required speed to implement their ideas. In implementation phase, which is the transition from the "drawing board" to the coding, large teams are more effective obviously.

In one darkfall  Developer Journal Tasos said that there are gaming companies in the market that have Screenshot departments the size of Aventurine. One can clearly see that when it comes to speed of implementation, Aventurine is falling back due to resource constraints.

The delays however don't mean that they are unable to deliver what they claim; they are simply unable to deliver in a timely fashion.

For large companies like Funcom , whatever speed is gained by the large team and availability of resources is partly offset by the delay caused as a result of mis-communication between the developing  departments. You can clearly see the results of this in the numerous launch date push-backs AoC has been forced to announce - and WAR probably too...

1)  These discussions could be put to rest if the developers simply allowed established gaming magazines and websites the chance to preview and play the game.

Instead they allow someone out of nowhere to play their game and expect his posts to carry any kind of weight?   Or is Asp an established reviewer of video games who works for a well-known site or magazine?

2)  Investment capital.  This can amount to millions and in the past, fake products have been used to steal people blind.    Perhaps you heard about the Dot.Com boom?

Now I am NOT saying this is what is happening here, I think Darkfall could very well be a game that is suffering from ridiculous delays and developers who don't know what they're doing as far as marketing.   But until they start to produce *tangible* evidence supported by established magazines/website/reviewers they have to expect potshots and rumors to surround their game.

Well, they didn't show it to any reputable reporter. But still that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

And they wont show it to anyone before it is really ready and good to launch; the recent flood of negative comments from beta leaks of AoC is the best example that beta process needs a game as polished as possible, in fact it needs the final product for stress-testing and minor bug fixing.

I don't think the vaporware label means that people think that Adventurine is BSing, or whatever. Most people just label it in the same category as Duke Nukem Forever. A game that may never see the light of day.

I agree 100% there; any game is a candidate for the vaporware label until it makes it to launch. Even AoC and WAR. With varying possibility ofc...

Other than Asp.... There is NO one known to have ever played a working build of Darkfall. So, your prior statement was fabricated.

No one played Darkfall at any convention. that's just not true. They were at a convention in 2006 but didn't display a working demo of Darkfall, period.

So, the "plenty" of people still after ALL this time and many years, boils down simply to.....

Drum roll please.....................

Asp !!!!

What a surprise!

Tell you what. Where is Asp? Let him come post and clear this all up. Let's hear the facts about exactly where Darkfall stands today. Maybe he knows. He's apparantly the only credible source any of you guys have to support your cause.

Makes a lot of sense too. Let's see.... Hmmmm... You and I have a company developing a huge, feature laden game where we stand to make possibly millions of dollars. Let me think now.... Who can we get to give our game a try? Hmmmm.... IGN? Nah... Gamespot? Nah.... Mmorpg.com? Nah...

I know! Asp!

Perfect!

Tell me

1)How do you know Darkfall wasn't displayed at E3 2006 as a demo for potential publishers? Were you there? Or is non-existence of evidence, evidence of non-existence? What sort of faulty logic is this?

2)Again the vaporware rumors. What is Aventurine gaining or expecting to gain by advertising a "fake" game? Pre-sales? Nope. What then?

I have nothing to gain from waiting for Darkfall, except perhaps a very good MMO once it comes out. Likewise, I have nothing to lose. I just don't go all paranoid over vaporware claims that make no sense.

Ok, let me give that a read. Seems like a step in the right direction =D

They don't keep archives online. It is probably one of the worst magazine sites I've come across. Plus i can't make anything of the language.

I sent the link to get their contact details.

I'm trying to be objective with my posts regarding Darkfall now. Reason being is that the fans can be defensive, and I do understand why with all the constant flaming. So let me preface this post by saying it is in no way a senseless flame, and I am not a darkfall hater.

That said, I'll say this. Asp is not a credible source. He is some random dude from a guild. In being said random dude, he is not immune to being bribed. I'm not saying that is what happened, but the fact remains that since he is not a credible part of the media it makes things a bit muddy. What i'd be interested in learning is the names of the individuals from the gaming magazine world who played it, and the names of the actual magazines they work for. If we knew that, and could read their write ups it'd give the fans a huge boost of confidence.

There was an article in January's PC Gameplay #141 magazine.

http://www.pcgameplay.com/index.html

I don't know if it was them they spoke to, however. Still you can find their contact details from the link above and ask them.

Name them.

Who are these individuals you are referring to? You use the word "plenty", which means a lot of people. Ok, so who?

Let us all gain the benefit of reading about their experience playing a working build of Darkfall.

If we can extablish that a working build of Darkfall really exists, we can all move on and these discussions would go away in their present form. Then, we could discuss the game on it's merits. But you can't discuss Darkfall on it's merits. Know why? Because to YOUR or MY knowledge, a working build does not exist. If it does... Where is it?

That's been the point of many here all along. You choose to see it as bashing. I am NOT bashing. I too would welcome the title. My point, over and over again is simply, where is this game you keep referring to?

So... you stated quite clearly above that "many" have played it.

I'm waiting to read the list of names you have.

Try Asp's from the Lord of Death review...this is the most recent

http://www.lordsofdeath.com/www/?p=12

Then there was a demo displayed a few years back at a E3 convention iirc.

Before Xmas last year they showed the game to a group of individuals working in the gaming magazine business.

You want names? I don't have any, except for the username of Asp.

And i also have solid evidence that Aventurine exists and is funded, amongst other sources, from the Greek state as well.

What else is required to make an unbiased individual believe that the game is in development and the developers are striving to release it?

Does intention guarantee success? No.  A million things can happen to actually prevent Aventurine from launching DF - force majeure coming in mind.

But since Aventurine are not asking for anything in return when claiming that the game is in development, and they have produced evidence the game's existence, why not believe that this is the actual truth?

And what exactly does Darkfall have that's so much better?

Have you actually played Darkfall?

I'm waiting....

Didn't think so.

Yet you just pound and pound a game that's actually releasing, because it's NOT AS GOOD as Darkfall. And a game you HAVEN'T even played, LOL! Are you serious?

There is NO Darkfall.

Until at least a semi-working alpha build is proved to exist and someone plays it, there is NO actual game. Not just ideas, cool features and "some" code strewn together with basic graphics, but a working (even buggy would be a plus at this point) alpha build.

Then people would take it seriously.

This is exactly the type of comment that transcends logic and goes into the sphere of emotion. There have been plenty of instances where Darkfall has been either play-tested or demonstrated to a select few individuals.

The only valid argument you could have is that Darkfall has not yet been released. But that it doesn't exist, even as a work in progress, is laughing-stock...

More like, the Other (AOC) is saying talk is cheap.  And as far as AoC PvP videos looking horrible, compare them to the DF beta PvP videos.  Oh wait... There aren't any.  Whoops!   That's gotta suck...

There is a PvP video. It's Alpha though...

EDIT: make that two, there is also an earlier gameplay video at IGN

And I am just saying that some people point out the obvious "strange" parts of DF. The DF community counters with saying that it's to be expected.

Both are right. And sometimes (not very often sadly) both sides agree actually and just let each other hope for the best for their games.

Well, both are not right. The vaporware claims have long been refuted, although most opponents of DF selectively choose to forget all the evidence produced to support the opposite.

i.e. this link http://www.ypan.gr/c_announce/45_1843_cms.htm has existed for some time, proving that Aventurine is a solid company working under EU subsidization by the Greek Ministry of Development. Yet not even this can convince them that Aventurine exists and is getting money to make Darkfall...

I am not talking about criticism. I am talking about bashing. And even the criticism is still based on rumors (yes, rumors, because all people have to go on, are unconfirmed reports of contract-breakers. Believe them, or believe the Developers...that is your choice, but it doesn't make the statement less true).

I am talking about certain people (I won't say names but you can find them easily), calling the game craptastic. Calling it bullsh*t, calling it any kinds of names. That is not criticism, that is outright hatred and attacks on the game without further comments or anything. And this goes from DF to AoC, from AoC to WAR, from WAR to AoC and so on and so forth.

That's what amuses me most. Because, as i stated in my first post, no community of any game is immune to people in their ranks who give the community a bad name. Not DF, not WAR and not AoC. Don't act as though the DF community is a sainthood...because it is not.

Well, unfounded judgment ,comments and bashing on a game, wherever they may be coming from, are not to be taken seriously. It is emotion speaking rather than reason and I'll agree with you that it is amusing.

I was referring to posts from the so-called "vaporware trolls" that try to prove all DF info we have gotten does not exist and has been faked. That , too, is amusing.

Come on...that is a very naive sentiment. We all know that threads recently posted in are displayed on the main site. I personally only look there to see what's going on and if a topic catches my interest I read it. It's not like the DF people stay on their own Fan-Pages.

Face it, this is a site for -all- MMO's. You can't expect people not to read what you post here...and expect them not to get angry...like you do...when you trash talk their game.

I personally don't like all the trash-talking. I try to stay civilized and I try to keep an open mind (even though I -AM- going to play AoC), but that doesn't mean I don't see all the back and forth in bashings that's going on here.

Well, DF main criticism on AoC is that it is  pathed, not-really-PvP, etc....the same things that AoC beta-testers are whining about really.

AoC criticism on DF is that every single bit of information displayed thus far has been faked. Which doesn't make sense .

So...let me get this straight. It's OK for people to talk crap about AoC, to bash it, to call it a crappy product based on unconfirmed information and second-hand opinions at best....but it is -NOT- OK for people to voice their opinion that DF won't be published because we haven't seen much beyond a few screenshots and short vids of the game......?

Seriously. Think before you post people. The DF crowd is no better (or worse) than any other fanbase of any other game. They, like the others, have idiots among them who just attack without any basis of information. Don#t talk high and mighty. Your game's fanbase is no different from any others.

only difference being, DF fans trash-talk AoC within their own forums...AoC fans seem to want to aggressively display their hatred for DF by storming  others' forums...

All the opponents of Darkfall please answer me this one question:

Since Aventurine is not taking any pre-orders (to justify a large-scale scam on their part by promising an undeliverable product, cashing in on hype and then vanishing), WHAT REASON do they have to claim they are developing a game if they are not?

We know for sure that Aventurine and Darkfall is being partly funded by the EU (software development is subsidized in Greece - check http://www.ypan.gr/c_announce/45_1843_cms.htm  and click to open the Word file. It is in Greek, but if you scroll down at #10 you'll see Aventurine got 265.236 Euro for development) and they need to deliver. There is no possibility on earth DF is a scam and not coming out...
