Excellet review, I still play runescape on the side and still have a members account. I recently reached my long time goal of getting combat lvl 100, and find myself wishing that modern MMOs would take a few ideas from the creative folks at Jagex.

How is fixing minor graphic bugs not cost effective, its got nothing to do with cost effectiveness its like selling a car, and the panels are all overlapping, and we are all buying that car. like idiots.

Anyone who has played an MMO before, knows that your character hair, is going to flow straight through that sweet shield you just got from said boss, and that shield, is going to clip through those nice new shoulders you got, and that sword, well you catch my drift.

Does anyone wonder why there isn't some sort of Item Clipping Department, solely dedicated to the repositioning of items on your toon so that it doesnt look silly? Ever since i started playing MMO's all those years ago, its been a persistant thorn in my side. Now i do understand that in the broad scope of MMO Gaming, not ALL items will fit perfectly together, i understand that I really do. ( i have to for my sanity) But most items only need slight repositioning, or perhaps some minor graphic tweaks, so that all items fit nicely in with eachother, and i can spend my days wondering why the next pointless problem exists. Am i missing something here? is it just me?

What class combination will you play? explain why

Vanilla week,  Repatching the game to vanilla times, with no cross server battlegrounds etc, and have us fight people that are actually on our own servers, rekindling old rivalries etc. and maybe even temporarily putting shamies and pallys back on their original respective sides.

The upcoming 2011 (with highly anticipated games like GW2, Rift, SW:TOR)  reminds me of the 2008 season (with highly anticipated games like WAR and AoC).

Question is will history repeat itself. I pray it doesnt. But even I know many of these upcoming games are not 'the answer' to the current MMO doldrums.

This is the second time you have posted this.....can you please go into detail what you believe this so called "Answer" is? I am ever so curious.

Interesting point of view, and he is right in certain aspects, however, in 2008 when we where waiting the dismal 2009 lineup, most of us where relatively content with what was out at the time. Unlike now, we are  desperate for the market to take a step forward, and go back to being ahead of its time.

I guess there are like-minded people out there :P

I hope this isn't true, I really want to enjoy the genre again. Thanks for reading =]

Feel free to discuss.

2010, Arguably the second worst year in MMO history. Though most of us haven't been knee deep in the MMO culture for very long, the majority are vigilant enough to see that 2010, was a horrible year for the MMO's.

Carrying on the trend from 2009, arguably the bottom of the trough in this "MMO recession", whether it be spill over from major economic problems, or simply a slow death to a dieing breed of games, 2010 was Plagued by failure after failure. It did however have some redemption, a silver lining had appeared in the form of a new and exciting set of next-gen MMO's. Whether or not we are blinded by desperation, is yet to be decided. I too have felt the pangs of hunger, a thirst for adventure, a need for cleansing of the old, and birth of the new, but do we ask for too much?

It seams at times, that we as MMO players, are expecting our developers to re-invent the "MMO Wheel" so to speak, and it is a fine line between what is new this year, and what was recycled from last year. What we really want is a re-invention of the foundations of what constitutes an MMO, and thus we are stuck in a rut, looking through our cookie cutter glasses, never to be satisfied.

So let us look to the future with an open mind, and pray that we find that glimmer of joy we experienced, when we first set foot, into a virtual world.

~ A casual gamer.

Were's my fighting talk?!

That had me laughing for a good 5 minutes.

I cant tell if you're being sarcastic or you really just wrote that.

The MMO fanbase is not patient, why bother us with new games not being released until a year from now?

By the time most of these games are released, we already know EVERYTHING about them, we mentally play them in our MMO addled minds until release date, only to find that its nothing like we thought it was,and proceed to drool over the next "great", "next gen", "truly unique" massive multiplayer online role playing game ( the sarcasm is tangible).

What do i suggest?

Let us know a couple months prior to release,  still plenty of time to get your extortion *eh hem* i mean preorders in and when we decide not to play your pathetic excuse for an MMO, we can at least say we only dedicated (waisted)  a couple months of our lives.

Think about it, we are stuck in an MMO- RUT, the last 5 years has seen little to no advancement in the MMO industry.

Thoughts?

I foresee this game going F2P in the next 6 months.  Its an instant gratification game, log in, customize the snot out of character, shoot some bad guys (or good) . Game over.

Its not graphics Im so much concerned about, its atmosphere, and WAR has plenty of it. The reason I no longer play is because i feel like im walking the yellow brick road, only 1 path, 1 direction, 1 motive. When i saw the maps i couldnt believe the set up!

Im not fighting the opposing side because they are up in my business, but because i can visualy see their path crossing mine at a given intersection with no real reason for battle.  It needs a more natural reason, one that makes me want to destroy the opposing force for stepping foot in my zone.

A third faction would also be another wonderful addition, Devs cant seam to grasp a 3rd faction these days, If one gets too powerful, the other two are there to band together and put them in their place, its flawless

Perhaps this is just me,
but after reading many posts by many people, there seams to be a misconception in the way people are viewing MMO's these days. Post after post all claim that the new content  found in newer MMO's is stale, borrowed, or just beaten to death. This being true to a certain extent, we fail to take into account our numbness to new content, our interest is calloused.
We all have a memory of the first time we had the pleasure of playing an MMO,  and perhaps want to experience this again as if for the first time. (myself included)
However,  if you find yourself trolling MMORPG.COM every day waiting for the next big thing, perhaps you are better off taking a breather from the MMO world and focus your efforts on something which actually IS new. (Perhaps single player RPs, FPS)
Who knows, maybe sometime in the future MMO's will evolve into something else entirely, and we will all get to relive that first moment we set foot into a virtual world. Recession? Nah, boredom.

The only problem i had with TB was that it felt so empty, i couldn't for the life of me understand why such a great game had such a small player base. It was challenging, fresh and created a great atmosphere to play in. It is sorely missed.

This game comes out of nowhere,  hits us with a ton of interesting ideas and a release date.  I like the spunk coated in ambiguity. I dont even really mind that there hasn't been a vid posted, due to the fact that i just found out this game existed, and hadn't been tracking it for months only to be disappointed by terrible gameplay vids.

Pokemon? lol
