There's a few contributing factors to the dislike of WoW:

-They keep screwing over long-time players: If you've played before TBC you'll know what i mean by this, they keep taking all your hard-earned gear, which this game is centered around, and making it worthless with every expansion.

-Gear: This game is probably one of the most gear needy games that I know of. But its not just the gear, but its the fact that the best gear is acquired through hours upon hours of grinding and there is no player-made gear that is worth it.

-Crafting: The crafting is useless for the most part, aside from such things as repair bots, potions and the sorts. The best player crafted gear is Bind on Pickup. WTF. You waste like 5,000 gold on a recipe for a sword or armor, and make it ONCE, because you cant get any return from what you spent to get it. Whats worse is that then you go to a dungeon and find a sword to replace that one you made and you go "oh... well that was a waste of money".

-GRIND: Its cleverly disguised as a quest system "go bring me 20 pig intestines and I'll make you some soup". How many mother f*cking pigs do you have to kill to get there intestines???!! I've killed thousands of pigs and they're missing there entrails. There's something seriously wrong with this!! Bats without wings... pigs without guts... bandits without mask that clearly have mask... IT GETS OLD! But it doesn't stop there, no. Then you have the "gold grind". In NO other game have I come across a worse need for money. The repair bills are horrible for purple gear, and blacksmiths cant even fix it for a cheaper price to help them make some cash. Not only this but the crafting in the game doesn't let you make money. Hell, i have never played a game that the crafting is so horrible that you LOSE money selling things. You make more money selling the ingredients then the actual product. Something is very wrong with this system and Blizzard wonders why there are these gold farming companies making MINTS off of their game.

-Balance: So many people keep bitching about the balance between classes. MMO's are social games. Get this through your heads. You NEED other classes to complete objectives. No, I don't think you should ALWAYS need someone else to help you complete objectives, but yes for many things you should. If a warrior is out dps-ing a rogue, there's a problem. If a druid is out-healing a priest, there's a problem.

-PvP: As mentioned with the balance complaint, you're not meant to be the solution to all problems, but in WoW people play like that. As a warlock you shouldn't be able to go toe to toe with a warrior, but I've seen it done. There's something wrong with this... that and that gear is the ONLY influence over whos the better man in PvP.

Now aside from all these faulty game mechanics there is the problem of the awful community. I cant stand trade chat. I turn it off its just that awful. The forums are even worse.

The game itself has set the progression of MMO's back quite a few years as there is no thought, strategy or skills to create a good character. There is nothing innovative about the game at all.

Lastly a major obstacle that needs to be overcome by other developers is that they all want the numbers that WoW has. Its not going to happen and the financial backers of other developers want this. Because of this you need to find someone with faith in your development abilities and deep, deep pockets. WoW is a freak of nature and its success probably wont be recreated again. If any other game gets a million active subscribers then that will be a good day for games.

Overall WoW just shunts the growth of the genre as long as it remains as popular as it has. Because of this, other potential games that could have a lot to offer rarely make it out of the starting gate, and many people who started with WoW are now looking for the next thing, thats a little more advanced and has a little more depth then what WoW has to offer... and it wont happen for a while.

This post is spot on! For those who joined WoW late or are a more casual gamer, you will just never understand how Blizzard screwed many players over starting with TBC.  That is OK, but please don't make up reasons why people don't like WoW when the above post nails 90% of the reason.

You need look no further than all the people bashing vnguard, AOC, etc. to see the negaitve effect of WoW neophytes n the genre.

On the flipside, as these gamers mature and realize that WoW wasn't the only MMO ever made, things are only going to improve for all MMO's. WoW is a well made game and extremely popular, but one needs to realize as more and more people get wired and internet savvy, that the MMORPG market was/is headed for heavy expansion anyways.

wow. so much speculation by people who don't even play the game..

yes there have been some minor changes and a few NPC's have more clothing, but all in all the quest content is still very mature. I like many folks who play the game wish there was a lot more nudity etc..

I have seen bastard, whore, and gay references while questing last night.  This game will not be getting a Teen rating.

Also - there are some very good full nudity mods on the net.. for those that like a little more 'realism'.

I am sure this post will be ignored and buried under a landslide of theories by people that maybe played the game for a week.

I'm really interested in what changed you over from your last opinion...

Wow! First stock market analysis and now accurate polling data. Are you serious?

This is like standing outside the courthouse entrance line and asking people if they are happy with the governemnt.

SKEWED DATA FTW!

Skewed voting population aside, the last two options create a push-poll and distort the data by ~%30

Of course it could very well be purely coincidental. Or maybe not. Time will tell...
I guess now that the first free month is over, we'll have more accurate results...

Seriously Battlekruse.. your naivete is overwhelming!!

So by your logic the 23% increase in stock value is because they released another miracle patch today??

Will you guys just stop with the ignorant AOC hate posts please??????????

You can actually build a very nice gaming rig for ~$700 if you know what you are looking for, read lots of reviews, and do some competitive shopping... no need for over kill.

I also don't know why everyone is still hung up on the 8800 series cards.. for instance a 9600gt will run AOC just fine, scales better with SLI, and runs alot cooler. But I am a noise enthusiast, my computer doesn't need to sound like a race track.

This forum is probably one of the worst places to get a truly honest answer.  So much depends on your personal gaming style, I for one think it has a lot going for it - especially if you are one of the folks that for whatever reason has shut the door on WoW.

They have been updating and adding contect... everyone would like to see it faster. I think one of the biggest patches needed is the PVP rank/consequences.  This will really impact the game and may help your choice.  My guess - this is about 2 weeks away - just a guess.

There is definitely enough content to not feel like you are just grinding in an empty  zone (but you can do this) - I swear some people just miss content or shortcut quests as much as possible and wonder why they are hitting a wall.

I personally think this is the biggest downfall of LOTRO as well.  I am a huge JRR fan/scholar (whatever you want to call it) and I really was turned off on this game right at the character creation screen.  I really wanted to like it, but the classes just weren't there for me.

I rather like elves and orcs and the whole high fantasy thing, but I do think AoC did a good job with a low-fantasy humanoid only template.. at first I was annoyed, but I now rather like that only the stygians can be mages.

Alot of the doom-gloom AoC bashers severely under-estimate how effective eye candy is to the casual gamer. ..  probably the same thought mechanic that thinks because a male is playing a female avatar he must be gay...

BTW just to add that the reason the price of stock went down is because as I said, Funcom has been investing in their own business so they have been a growth stock..as you can see the value has been continuing to rise..well right now it cant grow anymore because they dont have the finances. Thats when the stock reaches its peak in that period and people start selling and the price drops...it doesnt mean the company is doing badly thats just the way the stock market works. The previous investors just wanted a quick return on their money and now the people buying it are going to be in it for the long term. Thats why I say it would be harder to buy it now because its a little late for the original investors to max out their profits. That graph you linked to is typical for any company that has invested all its wealth long term and has reached a new phase. In no way does it indicated failure.

And PS that is a really idiotic way to attempt to bash a game.

While I don't 100% agree with your posts on this thread (retail chains are sooo fickle), it is damn nice to see someone who actually understands stock market/company cycles!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR POST

I've been gone a couple of days, glad to see this post evolved into something, and gave a sample (however skewed) of re-ups.

I for one am glad they did release the game when they did - even if it feels unfinished - even if you question how quickly they are improving (or destroying ) - rather than having nothing at all new to look forward to over the summer. The fall release line up is getting so crowded, it would have been financial suicide to push it back farther..

I wouldnt give those thiefs at Funcom a second more of my life. They is being punished now for there greed which serves them just right.

It is these kind of posts I just don't get, obviously the poster has no real clue how businesses operate. Punished? They are probably pretty happy with sales so far, and a 50% re-sub rate is nothing to scoff at. (yes -that is an educated estimate.) Look at the game dynasties they are ranking along side in sales and play time.  What I wonder - did they somehow leech the soul of your first born for playing the game?? I noticed several similar posts earlier on , but none were worth responding to, just so happens this one was last.

I am curious to hear what would make those on the fence and waiting to renew - do it? What will it take to nail down a committed player base as WAR, Aion, TCOS, and WoTlK all come down the pipe... THAT IS A LOT OF COMPETITION!

Glad I can just sit back and enjoy AoC for awhile... hopefully my first born will be safe!

Great post, it's a shame though that the "I levelled to 80 in no time & now I'm bored" brigade seem to make people feel defensive for actually liking the game.

I have also renewed my subscription & so far I am enjoying the game immensely. My main character is not even level 30 yet so there is still lots for me to do. At the rate Funcom are patching bugs & adding new content, that will probably be the case for a long while.

A lot of the people complaining seem to be so obsessed with getting to 'End Game' that they fail to appreciate the rest, I doubt any new game would satisfy them.  I see endless comments about 'The Good Old Days' of hardcore MMOs, but those days are gone & nostalgia often clouds people's judgments, so they would probably hate even those games if they were released for the first time now.

I agree with you completely.. but then everyone plays games there own ways... like posting on mmorpg.com is an EXCITING and STRATEGIC game.

Take RoJo for instance.. he waited OVER 2 YEARS to make his first move... "likewise".

Wow! - brilliant I tell you - BRILLIANT!  The AOC doomsayer crowd is a savvy bunch indeed!

Just felt like I need to post a new positive thread here.. to counter-balance the 20 or so people that must spent 3 hours a day posting doom and gloom about this game...

no I won't tell you what build I have... so I don't have to hear you flame me about how I unbalanced they are..

no I won't tell you what level I am - so I don't have to hear you tell me about all the lacking content. just around the corner..

no I won't tell you my computer specs - you do not need to be my IT guy.. thanks though.

THE GAME IS FAR FROM PERFECT, BUT IT IS FUN AND IT IS BEAUTIFUL !!

I feel very sad for anyone who after playing AOC, has such a WoW addiction that they have to go back and stare at that game anymore... but addictions are merciless, and make people say some crazy things...

So go ahead.. please tell me what a stooge I am.. k thx

That video is a good display showing some of the lighting that's slowly started to be added to the game :)

Enjoy!

Seriously... people outside the professional design world have no idea how important lighting is to a finished product.  It would be like moving into a new house with unpainted drywall and no carpets... the house is sound but ummm....

It is also one of the easier universal aspects of the game to mass implement.

I have to say the newest screenshots where lighting has been added (not sure if it is experimental or not) really are surpassing my expectations.. so hang in there!

And I guess with the constructable fortresses in WotlK with the added siege engine systems...these are just a next step in further evolution to even more choices of play (and crafting :)) .

I agree with most of what you all said BTW.

As for stealth: well my paladin crafted a tool I can do stealth with :)) and indeed I can craft a rocket launcher doing BIG distance damage. (just teasing but I can ...)

But have a nice day in that universal unexsistent universe called sandbox.

Bravo Zorndorf! You have just won the thread hi-jack award for June 2008. Well done my friend... WELL DONE!!!

Can you believe these folks are actually trying to defend their pitiful definitions of sandbox?? You really have them going!!

Boy do these posts get old...

While I will not call you a troll, it would be nice if you could post something without the heatshielding in place from the get-go.

STOP WITH THE "BECAUSE IT IS INSTANCED IT IS NOT A REAL MMO" BULLSHIT PLEASE. With one breath you can bash this game style dynamic, and in the next be crying over how all games are identical..

And quit holding up everything against WoW as your holy grail.... I am sooooooooooooo ooooooooo oooooooooo tired of the "WoW has 10mil supcriptions blah blah blah.. I am so validated by the number 10 million!!!"

And you ARE subtly saying you would rather be playing F2P over AoC, so either defend your orignal post or STFU.

Some of us actually like AoC... it is not perfect - but it sure as hell is a MMORPG.

Listen Guys and Gals, I am telling you you don't need to break immersion of a MMOG by adding dungeon instances to resolve mob camping. This is stupid backwards lazy developer thinking that you all have bought into.

Any developer that assigns a specific desirable loot item to a single boss mob is a retard! This is obviously a recipe for player conflict, squabbling and mob camping. Boss mobs should drop non tradeable quest items only, no coin, no loot items, and they should give zero experience for the kill. Make the questgiver the person who hands out the tradeable loot reward item. Code the quest to only be available once per character with specific level/skill/faction minimum requirements, and the quest item only drop for those who meet those minimums.

Now you have a situation where players still want to accomplish the content, but are not motivated to kill the boss mob more than once, except to help others complete the quest. This way you not only eliminate the camping and squabbling, but you have created a situation where players help each other to accomplish a goal and interact in a positive way.

You still can have dropped quality loot, but make most of those items a rare drop, from a multitude of mobs of the same difficulty level, spread out geographically, so there is no cock blocking other players. Of course any quality MMOG should utilize the anti-killstealing mechanism of coding whichever group strikes the mob first, gets the loot regardless of attempts from others to do more damage. Again, using this system, there is not motivation or possibility to killsteal, only to help others achieve a goal. No instancing is required to solve this problem.

Add a dash of unique loot items which drop from specific rare outdoor spawns, like the ones in classic EQ1 which you might only encounter once during a whole year of playing, because their spawn timers were so long and variable and they could randomly spawn anywhere in the zone, that even if you spent every day in that  zone, your chances would only increase slightly. Now you have also created a reason for players to continue visiting zones they may have already outleveled and made it more desirable to utilize realistic travel to increase their chances of a random rare spawn encounter, rather than instaporting all over the place. This results in more encounters with other players and more team work hunting down rare spawns.

Throw in a healthy, difficult to master crafting system, which produces quality tradeable items and you now have the makings of a real MMOG without stupid, immersion killing, isolationist instancing.

Your credibility has entirely gone out the window here... and the fact that you no longer play MMO's is showing through.

Why would a developer put TONS of time into making fun, creative, unique dungeon encounters only to have the players run through it ONCE?

You have some valid concerns, I think this is why WAR is making alot of the dungeons open world, while only leaving small parts instanced.. so that people still get that LOWER GUK feeling. For me that was the magical MMO time that no other game (WOW included) will ever touch.)  I really hope there is a sense of danger in these open world dungeons... but I am getting off point.

Also - It sounds like you prefer a CRAFTING game.  WAR is not ever going to be for you.

And EQ had zoning! It was not a seemless world either...

I think a couple of classic servers would be a stellar move by blizzard... but the question is... how classic?

would they still have super inflated questing XP?

what instances would be included... through Naxx?

BG'S? old style AV? or none at all?

I for one would like to see no limit on instances again...BRD 10 man's and such.. and old old original Strat... sigh...

I like the idea, haven't seen much of a clamour for it though, and it doesn't seem to sit with the Blizzard philosophy at this point in time.

So other company see WOW so successful then they will make some similar game.. isn't there alot of industry do the same thing? There is vast of consumer out there..

There were 2 particular things that came together for WoW - kind of a perfect storm scenario...

1. HUGE following from RTS: diablo, warcraft, and starcraft will always be considered flagship games for their time.

2. The advent of high speed internet... people completely miss this one... when UO and even EQ were first out, everyone was on dialup... THE WEB has exploded, so of course there are more online gamers.

Yes WoW is a good game, though definitely not the quality game it once was.  It is very casual friendly, but don't under-estimate the exponential boost points 1 & 2 gave this game.   EQ2 absolutely shot themselves in the foot as competition.. WoW won by default.
