Thanks for the replies.  I'll probably throw Guild Wars out there and see if she's interested.  I also considered Hunted, but I heard that it was a little rough around the edges. 

So, my wife and I are looking for good duo games.  I'm in another country, so we have been playin games online together... 

So far we've dabbled on Dead Island, WoW, and Magicka. 

We are kinda waiting for Guild Wars, but do you guys have any input on wicked fun co-op duo games?

67-70 hours camping Stormfeather in EQ on my Ranger for the haste clickie eye patch. 

 

Everything started getting a little fuzzy and my whole body smelled like coffee. . . I forgot really at what hour I fell asleep.. All I remember is waking up in my bed.  Gogo Teenage years of EQ. 

Metallica isn't metal, it's a bunch of sell out asshats who discovered if you growl at the end of every sentence it makes you sound 'hardcore'

Metallica is metal is like comparing the Rugrats to South Park. 

They've got some pretty good sounds, but they are the softest 'metal' i've ever heard if you consider them.  I've always considered Metallica hard rock / soft metal at best.  I used to like them when I was much younger but now I cant stand listening to them. 

 

and yes, I'm an MMOer and a Metal head. 

 How about, instead of blaming the company

 

Blame the asswipes who crack these games forcing companies to take such measures.  If people didn't do all the stupid shit to bypass paying for a game, companies wouldn't have to take these ridiculous steps to make a profit. 

From a personal perspective, I don't mind the sharing/transfer of music/games online.

From a business perspective, you lose thousands of dollars.

From a logical perspective, you make more money if you try to do a DRM.

From a realistic perspective, those who cracked the game, weren't ever going to purchase the game in the first place. 

 

The only people you can blame for shitty DRMs are your fellow gamers who screw it up for the rest of us.  So deal with it. You bought a game and it's fubared, other people are having the same issue... I'm pretty sure the company is going to try and resolve the issue. 

Steam should return the money, BUT there is a thing called a "Terms and Agreement" that you clicked yes to.  Soooo in the long run, your complaining about something you already agreed to... GG for not reading.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the average age of the average gamer in the United States was 33 in 2006, and it is inching up every year. The average age of someone that bought a videogame was 39 (some studies report 40).

The notion of the average gamers being children is an old myth. Guess who bought Pong in the 70s? "Old people". Guess who bought Atari 2600s and Colecovision in the early 80s?  "Old people". Guess who bought Commodore 64's for gaming? "Old people". Guess who buys Xbox 360s and video cards and MMOs, yep... you guessed it... "Old people". The main reason that so many people seem to think it is 13 year olds playing all these games is because for so many years video game publishers only openly marketed to this very under-represented demographic.

Are there kids playing computer and video games? Yes. Are they the norm? No. And year by year they are becoming LESS the norm than ever before.

 

I think it's moreso because younger people are the loudest most obnoxious gamers, which means we notice them more. Kinda like how people think everyone online is a child molester because of the 5 news stories a year about child abduction from the internet that get blown up into insanity by scared parents.

 

The real answer is.  The people who can afford games and gaming consoles+PC's = Older people. 

There is a reason raiding doesn't start until 7-8 PM for most Guilds.  Thats when mommy and daddy are home from work and finish dinner.

It's a single player game that you happen to need 25 other players at max level to compete for an endless grind that will never actually end. 

WoW requires as much intuitive and thought as a Myspace Account. The only class in WoW that requires any thought is a Healer and most healers in WoW are made up of some pretty intelligent people. 

 

I never had any attachment to WoW past spending time with my girlfriend.  It's a great form of entertainment when her and I could play together during nights and talk about the game.  Eventually, the poor community and extremely easy gameplay got the best of me and I could not continue the grindfest.  WoW never gave me any sense of accomplishment and it eventually got to the point where I'd pass epics along because I couldn't care less about them and I only ever logged on to be with the girlfriend. 

I'd prefer her to jump in and play a little more difficult game with some competitive PvP but that never works out because she likes the relaxed and easy nature of WoW. 

So I play my game and she plays hers. 

 

What I'm trying to say is.  People play WoW because it's easy and uncompetitive. . . great for the casual and has a decent grind for the hardcore.  For people like me, who have been playing competitive games since I was 2 years old. . . it does nothing but bore me to tears.  The ever-so-popular "Don't stand in the fire" form of skill only kept me entertained for a few months and the PvP is lackluster. . . Who can do the most DPS got old fast. 

 Not trying to be mean, I know you spent time on the Guide. . .

 

but Warcraft is the easiest MMO currently available on the market.  You can not lose at Warcraft. . . It's impossible.  You can die every 5 minutes and eventually make it to max level.  

If you are incapable of looking for big golden questionmarks (?)

. . . You might consider a new hobby.  Like testing the conductivity of a toaster in water or making cardboard wings to test human flight. 

 

My suggestion? Write a raiding guide for Warcraft, it's really easy. Call it:

 

Avoiding Obvious and Dangerous S%!> That Falls or Grows From the Sky/Monster/Ground

and then only have 1 sentence in the book. 

Don't stand in the (TV Edit) Mother Blubber Fire!

The animations are bland and uninterresting.  The combat noise poorly represents the environment.  The combat never feels involved. . . you don't get hurt.  Almost feels like a nerf war.

Not really sure what you mean by combat "text" . . . if by that you mean the combat logs, well I don't spend time reading those in a fight.  Animations are indeed kinda lacking, but I suppose I just got used to it.  I only play a shadow warrior and a squig herder, so all I ever see are them placing imaginary arrows on their bows and firing them off--pretty simple.

 

I'd say goblins are the best race to play if you want noises.  I crack up all the time when I activate their sprint skill.  Heck, any noise they make sounds funny.

 

By Combat Text I mean the numbers above the head.  They really do mean something in todays games and even back in EQ days.  

EQ Style

Soandso has landed a crippling blow (1732)!. . . followed by a terrible bonesnapping noise

WoW Style

Boom! Big numbers flash on the screen! . . . Gut wrenching slash noise

DAoC Style

Heavy chop/bleed sound. . . red text.   Plus, the visual representation of a Troll with a 2hander.  You knew when he hit, it was going to hurt and if he didn't hit you heard the thud of a block. 

 

Combat is so very important to me when I play a game and if it doesn't feel like I'm getting hurt or hurting the enemy I usually lose interest in the game. 

This is one of the reasons I really dislike Warcraft, DoT's do SO much damage and your character really doesn't represent how much damage they are taking.  A Warlock can instant DoT you for 80% of your HP and your character just walks around losing hp.  Most of Warhammer is like that. . . Just tiny red numbers and a sound every now and then.  

 

The best combat system is by far DAoC.  Reactive/Positional combat, no tiny numbers, no dps fodder.  You either got whaled on or you were Ok.  There is no inbetween crap. 

 CoH has that wicked ragdoll physics.  

 

I played for hours just to kick people into buildings or slam them over things.  Ragdoll physics = WIN.

 

When a medieval/fantasy game gets released where you can shield bash someone into a wall. . . I'm stuck for life.

Now please tell me where that leaves time to actually level up?  Sure if you spent 6 weeks doing nothing but farming and selling on the AH and didn't spent a dime of it, then 2000 gold is a piece of cake.  But that's not what he said he did.  He said he spent 6 weeks leveling up to 46 and made 2000 gold in the process.  That's not quite the same thing.

 

Well assuming your saving your gold and not AH buying EQ you can farm linen and wool and low level ore while you level to about 20+ You can start on Mithril after youve trained up the mining to do it you can gather mithril by doing the 20+ quests in Stonetalon since its one of a few places to gather Mithril ore that low level. You can then start on the STV quests which leads you to ...............drumbeat, more mithril deposits, do this while getting ganked and doing the kill the stupid critter quests over there, in a few levels you can hit the Elementals in STV and kill them til your hearts content.  Then theres another mithril area in Arathi Highlands near the pirates quests. And on your way back to town,..... you kill the elementals. Also spending a few hours a day or so after leveling to farm will do wonders for your gold intake.

It takes 6 weeks if you suck.

Look, I'm not denying it can be done, what I'm saying is that someone who's brand new to the game doesn't have the knowledge to do it.  The average person just starting out barely brings in enough gold by just questing and selling stuff on the AH to cover the cost of purchasing all your skills and buying a riding mount.  They don't know what to farm or how much they should sell it for on the AH.  Without getting someone to tell you exactly how to do it, you wouldn't know.  Someone who's played the game for a while would know, but someone who's played for 6 weeks wouldn't.  Certainly they could find out how to make that much gold and do it, but typically that's not what someone does when first playing a game.  They are just learning how to play and having fun, not farming for mats.  Typically doing things like farming for mats only happens after you have a reason to need some gold.  Why would someone even need 2000 gold in the first place?

So to get back to the point, it's a little odd that someone would have 2000 gold to donate to someone else after having spent only 6 weeks playing the game.  If you disagree that's fine.  We agree to disagree.

By the way, "spending a few hours a day after leveling to farm" is also one the best possible ways to avoid having any fun in the game whatsoever.  If I would have done this I would have hated the game after 6 weeks too.  Why would anyone inflict that kind of torture on themselves?  You want 2000 gold?  Just wait till you hit max level and continue to do quests just like you did when you were leveling up.  Once you hit max level instead of getting XP you get gold instead.  In 6 weeks of questing (far more fun than farming for mats) you'll have enough gold for your Epic flying mount.

 

Unless you're expecting this guy to be retarded. . . It doesn't take much know-how to look at the Auction House and see "Small Eggs" selling for 5g a stack or Mithril selling for 30-40g a stack and then coming to the conclusion. . . "Hey, I got those at level 5 or farmed that at level 40. . . I bet I could make a killing" 

Heck, I made 18,000g in a month farming Arrakoa Feathers/Thorium/Random Drops/Reputation Drops.  It's not that hard to make money off of stuff that no one really wants to farm anymore.

WoW didn't do anything but polish what was currently available.  They released an MMO at the perfect peak of the internet and they had StarCraft and WarCraft to back it up.

EverQuest nearly crashed the internet in the City it was released and it was taken out by more polished games, as such will happen to World of Warcraft.

One game will release with polished characteristics of AoC/WoW/DAoC/EQ/GW/Lineage/Lotro/Warhammer and crush the market.

 

The WoW Equation is as follows.

Low Hardware Requirements + Finished Product + Easy Gameplay + Never Ending Grind + Sequel = Success

I'd also blame initial popularity for WoW's success.  Kinda works like a YouTube video.  First, 1,000,000 people see the video. (the hardcore fans) and then a bunch of people tag along because if 1,000,000 people saw the video ... I've gotta see the video!

Honestly, if Funcom designed their game for lower end systems, polished the animations and combat system, reduced the game to 40 levels, and changed the name of the product to something more appealing to a larger crowd. They could have ran with that 700,000+ subscriber base and turned that game into the next Warcraft. Thats what happens when you don't finish your product and design it for people with 1,000 dollar computers.

I checked out the gameplay video and it's . . . well, I dislike the oriental graphics, but . . . I was pretty shocked.

 

Combat almost looks like Street Fighter/Virtual Fighter/Soul Cal, looks like a ragdoll physics engine, and characters actually move their enemies rather than just strike them.

This won't be good news for you, but that's actually a representation of their clusters and poor programming on mythics part. 

This means 508 players on the cluster that includes (Nimue, Bors, Guinevere, Merlin, Palomides, Percival, Gawaine)  This means that only 2,512 Players Worldwide.  They probably have not fixed this due to how it may look world wide.

 

Thidranki = 50-100 Players a night, Molvik = 50-100 players a night, NF = 100-500 players a night.  This would be the most populated servers average. (From me doing a /who)

I would blame these numbers on Mythic's inability to provide advertising and support for this game.  They recently introduced Warhammer on Steam to pull from Steam's population, but they did not release DAoC on Steam.  Mythic's attention to DAoC has significantly reduced and it is my impression they are hoping all DAoC players will go to Warhammer so they can close the gates on DAoC. They never addressed buffbots on Regular servers because of the double revenue they bring in.  The results of this are sickening on these servers.  My estimates above (50-100 players in Molvik) include about 30-40% buffbots.  Some people even have 2 buffbots to ensure they have every buff possible in the game. Mythic has not addressed balancing issues in months and continue to drag the idea of Origins through the mud. 

 

Mythic could easily pump new life into this game, but it almost feels as if developers have given up.

 

 

 

 

 

To me, Warcraft is the "Myspace" of the MMO genre. . . It's hard to explain the connection but if you look at the two of them. . . It's pretty similar.

My question is:

When are we going to get the "Facebook" of MMOs? (It is suppose to be a multi-player game eh?)

 

Most people I know view Myspace as a kid/pedophile playground with glittery pages and . . . well, you see where I'm going.  Those people also view Facebook as the more community based website, where you are encouraged to meet and communicate with friends and family. Not as gliterry, but detailed and welcoming.

 

I think all things come in pairs.  I can make tons of comparisons for MMOs.  Warcraft is kinda like Walmart, while LotrO is like Trader Joe's.  One offers a little bit of everything, one offers a selection of products with a more select crowd.  

EverQuest is like that old pub in town that everyone is used to, and Guild Wars is kinda like Fridays.  You might stop by Fridays every now and then, but you've always loved the pub.

 

So, instead of making another Myspace MMO, wheres the community MMO?

 Face it, the game is either good or bad. . . and yet people flee like the plague once they hear a game loses subscription numbers.  The failure of a game becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Who cares if a game has 10,000 players or 10,000,000 players? The only thing that matters about an MMO is if you enjoy playing it.  Warcraft is popular because Warcraft is popular, doesn't mean it's a good game. . . it's popular.  Same thing goes with actors, they might not be the best actors but they draw a crowd because they are popular.  No one can seriously say N'Sync was a good band, but they sold MILLIONS of records. . . Runescape and Warcraft have tons of subscribers - mainly because you can play both of them on a calculator. . . but who really cares?

 

Do you honestly put any thought into playing a game based on how many subscribers it has? The servers are all split up and most MMO's have roughly 1-3,000 players per server, so the amount of players won't ever really alter that much.  Maybe it's because you want to be part of something larger than yourself and you feel the need to play the most popular MMO. . . who knows.

 

All i'm really saying to say is. . . Who freaking cares if a game has 10k subscribers or 10 million subscribers? Stop posting doomsday theories and crap about subscription numbers... it's like talking about the color of fruit.  An MMO's quality doesn't represent the amount of players playing, otherwise you could suggest Runescape is the second best MMO out there.  

 

So.. to make a long post short.  Stop caring about stupid numbers, it makes everyone look like a little fanboi.
