Dungeons & Dragons Online: Goes Free, Introduces Store

They added some free-to-roam areas. Someone could also go into one of the instanced outside areas and mess around if they want. And, sure, a human DM can go with it, but a programmed computer can't. My PnP sessions nowadays are somewhat "convention stye," where, yeah, we can go explore if we want, but it's not going to be nearly as interesting because that's not part of the module.
And that's how DDO seems to me. You're in the "area" of the main quest, and if you want to go off and do whatever in that area, no problem, and maybe some of those things would be side quests, but they're not the main reason you're there. In my PnP playing, we also never ran into another PnP group, so PnP feels instanced anyway. Good point that, I never remember running in to another PnP group while playing either, I only remember NPCs created by the DM. 100s of people would probably have not worked well in a PnP session, in fact they don't really work well with any PvE content of any depth in a MMO either. |

Give the DDO F2P beta a go, has twitch combat, will have first person view, and tombraider like movements jumping and grabbing ledges type things. Detailed quests rather than grinding in open areas. |

Try the DDO trial. |

Give DDO a try, very PvE focused as long as you don't dislike grouping. In fact having to work as a team might be just what you are looking for if you are tired of PvP. Always LOTRO if you want more of an explorer type game. |

No you don't, once it is out of beta it will be a free digital download (sort of already is with the trial). If you do buy the box you will however get 1 month VIP access and 500 store points to spend. That is how I understand it. |

I should point out my post was not really about DDO and whether it needs F2P, plenty of posts on that. More witnessing comments that very unfavourably stereotype people (kids, idiots, foul mouthed, that sort of thing) based purely on their inability or wish not to pay for a MMO on a subscription basis, and wondering if F2P players are generally treated like a lesser social group. |

Originally posted by Bleakmage Warforged would not be available to you so the character would be locked. The current guesswork (and it is no more than that) is unlocking Warforged would cost you in the region of $4.50 and then you can play the F2P content. |

Your only alternative is Guild Wars, although you will have to pay for the box. It is funded by something akin to a pyramid scheme where a decreasing number of new player box sales pay for an ever increasing number of players to support, so I would jump in now because that model is fundamentally unstable in the long term. |
|

Why not just play a PvE focused game or one where the PvP is very zone limited. If you want to be a hero, how about City of Heroes? |

Since DDO has announced it is going F2P, I have noticed some extreme F2P player hate, at times bordering on pure bigotry. I wanted to know what the F2P players think about this? Is it something they generally have to put up with? As a lot of these F2P game have stores and so are anything but free, are people actually paying just in a different way and still being treated like freeloaders? |

Agree, without the ability to build your own content NWN would have just been a mediocre game with a pretty tedious storyline. |

EU forums are leaving post heavy even though we are not getting the F2P option. It would appear F2P bigotry doesn't even require you to be affected, truly amazing. |

DDO if you want a group focused MMO. |

Out of interest which companies have never been accused of misleading their customers? I know from my experience NCSoft, Cryptic, Funcom, Blizzard, Adventurine, SOE and who did I miss(?) have all been accused, who exactly hasn't? Grow up guys, you are acting like someone stole your virginity. |
