Question bout the game population
General Discussion « Sword of the New World 4/07/08 8:37:37 PM
Originally posted by jmerriex Yeah, but the funny thing is, SOTNW has terrible, terrible lag at times. I've played several MMORPGs on overseas servers and none of them had lag like SOTNW does. I don't think it's K2 servers that are at fault, but the connections in their area. Doing a trace route there is usually a big gum up right before their servers (Savvis in LA). This was supposedly fixed a while ago, but seems to be back. |

Question bout the game population
General Discussion « Sword of the New World 4/05/08 5:26:19 AM
Originally posted by Winterfresh I think the US version has double the exp rate, for one. At least up to level 84, you can gain a level at least every other day just by playing 3-4 hours, probably closer to 4 levels every 5 days (since I think I've been playing since early January and am now 84). And based on from what I've read, there also seems to be less inflation and less cash shop pimping from the company that runs it.

Question bout the game population
General Discussion « Sword of the New World 4/04/08 4:44:28 PM
I would say it's actually pretty crowded on the server I play (Orpesia). A lot of maps are completely crowded in both channels (it really needs 3). Some of it is bots, but a lot are also players. OTOH, some of the PvP tournaments I've been to are sparsely attended - only 3 or 4 players on two occasions (out of the six I've been to).

While I'd really like to believe that, pretty much every time I got to a lower level map, it's swarming with RMT botters (at least Tetra, Jezebel Glen, Porto Bello and Theurginwald). And if you go back there hours later, they are still there (I actually guess why I rarely see them on really low level maps, they graduate pretty quickly). Go back the next day, they are either there or have moved on to a higher map. I've seen them make it all the way to Bonavista River and level 75... I realize K2 probably doesn't have a lot of resources, period, and SOTNW is not their biggest game, but it sure seems like they could do a bit better. In the 3 months I've been playing, I've never ever seen an AM in game, except at special events. I mean, really, how long could it take to clean out the bot infested maps? They aren't exactly hard to spot, even when they don't move in unison. Maybe 15-20 minutes a few times per day.
And yes, there's not much inflation on the servers, at least for some stuff, but that's probably got to do with there not being a whole lot of new (non-bot) players who stick with the game. edit: Another example of K2 not doing much about botters is the bot that's often in Rebo, spamming the area with the address of the RMT website. Yesterday he was there for at least 6 hours before finally getting zapped by an AM.
edit2: Correction, he's still there, when I checked last it must have been on a different channel. So he's been there for 24 hours at least. It's also a bad sign when people spend 20,000 vis to heckle the AM into dealing with the bots when they show up for a tournament. |

Try using numbers in your name, too.

IS THERE ANY GOOD FREE MMORPG (or with micropayments)
LFGame « General Discussion 3/23/08 8:52:11 PM
I enjoy Sword of the New World myself, but it's a little grind heavy. There are quests, but not a lot.
Perfect World is supposed to be quest heavy. I couldn't get into it because of the somewhat arcane and complex interface.

New Player Great Game so far -- few questions.
General Discussion « Sword of the New World 3/23/08 8:42:04 PM
1) Stances are learned by going to the "Master Room" in a town (they are labeled on a map) and buying a stance book. Bear in mind stances also depend on which equipment is equipped 2) No, except for autohealing if you have Scout. Just leave them unarmed (no weapon). Using the keybaord shortcuts is really a must 3) Hit the space back to put them in defense mode, where they will automatically attack. If they get knocked down though, you'll have to hit it again. |
|

Without the auto stuff, it would be impossible to play. You have 3 characters, after all, and the spawn rate in some places is faster than you can kill them (without AOE attacks). Trying to control everything and deal with all the attackers would be impossible. |
|

The sad part is, if anything, the number of botters has gone up dramatically since the patch (and X-trap was enabled). So it's just penalizing players. |

That seems quite accurate to me. And pretty much the same thing is happening in the US version (SOTNW). Like you say, high end gear is hard to get, period, made even worse because the top clans monopolize the bosses. Still, at the same time, there might be some hope. The original developer (IMC?) in Korea apparently won't let them (both Singapore and US) release certain sections of the game (Bahamar Swamp) until a certain amount of players actually have decent gear (something like 40% of the players over level 80). So they have to do something. Increase the drop rate, maybe? The Singapore version seems to want to add more recipes to the cash shop (the US version is also apparently thinking about this).

IMHO, it's sort of like a John Woo movie (or HK action movies in general). You have a huge amount of easily killed enemies, but then some tougher guys. Usually one boss type per map (which can be really tough but always drop something), plus occasional elite regular monster which seem to have about 4-5 times as many hit points
Honestly, the crazy spawn rate is why I like the game. I was getting tired of high level play with guild wars, where it takes you forever to fight a mob of 24-28th level critters (since you and your group are only 20th). |

Sword Of the New world..Learning..
General Discussion « Sword of the New World 3/08/08 9:43:14 PM
I dunno, I've dealth with customer service twice and got a response right away. They have two people talking to players on the official message boards. That's pretty good communication. Their main web site stinks, though.
I would agree with the bots. I would guess it's a matter of not having very many employees. It seems like a small company with limited manpower. But even so it can take a week for bots to be removed. And apparently players can bot with limited penalties. |

Sword Of the New world..Learning..
General Discussion « Sword of the New World 3/07/08 7:48:57 PM
While I haven't tried every MMORPG on the market, I have tried most of the free ones, and IMHO, it's by far the easiest to get into (which is why I play it, actually, couldn't get into most of the other ones). Combat is simple - characters basically attack on their own. You just the space bar to put them in auto defend mode. You click on an icon or hit a key (they are labeled on screen) to use a skill or item. The quest log could be better; stances are a little confusing at first, but it's a pretty simple game to play.

Good points: Easy to get into (or so I thought), great graphics, unique gameplay (you control 3 characters and have up to 45 in your stable - sort of a Pokemon aspect); unique setting, pretty much free (you can buy most cash shop items from other players in the game) Bad points: Grind heavy, not many quests, limited character customization (and even for the limited stuff you need to spend real money for the most part), kind of laggy
It's free to download, but also in stores for $10 (you get a DVD plus a special character plus 1000 gold for cash shop items plus 100,000 vis for in game items). They stop counting levels numerically at 100, but you can advance beyond that to Veteran (100-110) and Expert (110-120) and presumably eventually beyond that. There are 3-5 skills per stance for each character. Stances are basically ways a character fights with each sort of equipment. Some character like Fighters have well over a dozen stances, while UPCs, basically playable NPCs, only have a few. There's not really much in the way in crafting in the game.

How do I use flashget to download this game...
General Discussion « Sword of the New World 2/08/08 12:23:46 AM
I actually think that was a flash ad. The way they recommend is "Pando", which is sort of a like a torrent program, but not actually torrents. Sort of a pain to use, you have to download Pando and then the Pando-torrent for the file, but it's what I did. |

I wish games let you use the arrow keys instead. I use a mouse left handed, so I can't really use WASD to move |

K2 originally thought they would have to have pay (real money) to increase the quarter slots past 15, but then they discovered that it would be 35 before having to pay. And you still start off with 15.
And the vet scrolls are apparently now tradeable. So you can possibly buy them in game from another player. (The Expert scrolls probably won't be though, at least until ). I actually think it costs $20 to get 3 of them from the cash shop. They changed prices a bit. It would kind of be expensive to have 45 vet characters, but most people aren't that compulsive, I think. I think they make their real money off of the UPCs (basically unique characters). Some of them can only be acquired through the use of cash shop items. And from costumes. They sell boxes of constumes. |

Originally posted by Pyrostasis While you're no doubt correct on those things, I think you're being somewhat too harsh and a bit conspiracy minded. K2 pretty clearly botched the launch of the game (like the horrible, horrible translation), had too few subscribers to keep it going, and had to go free to play. I'm sure they didn't want to. And to stuff like fixing bugs and bots, clearly K2 doesn't have a lot of manpower. They really can't do anything to the game themselves, they have to get the company that makes the original to make the changes for them. And because they used an altered version of the game (with the auto defend lock), they couldn't use the patched versions from other regions. I think finally they gave up and simply went in line with the other regions (and have only half implemented that). So I guess my point is, K2's problems is mostly a lack of competence (and resources) than anything else, rather than something sinister.

Well, basically they are just hosted in different countries and by different companies. The US version used to be a bit different than other versions, you could play without having to be at your comptuer (your people would continue to attack and heal on their own by themselves all the time) and you could pick a costume for your characters when yous tarted. But with the recent update, it's like all the rest. The US version is a bit behind the other ones, though. I think the Korean one is on 2.6, while the US version hasn't completely implemented 2.4 yet There are also some differences in cash shop prices. I think the US is more expensive. But then some stuff is cheaper, and I think you get more starting character slots in the US version (15).

Warning to those that play sword of the new world.
General Discussion « Sword of the New World 1/30/08 12:46:44 AM
Auto attack and auto heal still work, sort of, you just need to press the space bar after you get knocked down. Yes, taking it out makes it hard to play it while away from your keyboard, but then you weren't really playing it that way. Anyway, I don't think they had much of a choice. K2 licenses the game from some other company. They had to have the auto attack/heal coded especially for them, but that caused them to lag behind the game in Korea (and other regions) in terms of additional content. So basically it was keeping the auto attack/heal all the time (and the picking costumes at character creation) or get new content. They went with the latter.
As to cash shop stuff, it is tempting to buy it, but mostly the stuff in the Sword shop is pretty minor. I think they make most of their money off of costume boxes, not power-up items.
