Just curious if anyone has given this a shot in beta or otherwise and has any thoughts on the game?  I don't want to waste my time if it's garbage.

The one thing I really wanted was a lush game to explore without a bunch of loading zones.  Each world feels like it's about the size of a large field (some larger than others), but not a large explorable world.  Don't get me wrong, I'm still playing and enjoying the game, but I feel kind of disappointed in this department.  Why is it so difficult to make a game that has more exploration.  When I played WAR at launch, that even felt like it had more explorable areas than this does and the loading zones in that game were obnoxious.

I'm just not really sure why BioWare made the decision to chop the game into pieces with buildings that use elevators (one loading zone point) and smaller worlds that don't seem that big.  I haven't played WoW in forever, but I was hoping we'd see something on the scale of that game where each zone was explorable without having to load to the next.  Why is that so difficult to pull off in a game like this?  I'm sure it was a conscious decision by the dev team, but still a poor choice to use load zones.

Just disappointed in the exploration part of this game.  Was really looking forward to exploring the Star Wars universe a bit more freely.  /rant

I am interested in getting the soundtrack, but I really could care less about most of the stuff in the CE pre-purchase crap.  Does anyone know if they plan on releasing the soundtrack by itself?

We've all seen the really cool trailers that many felt were much more exciting than the Lucas disasters known as the prequel trilogy.  I've read countless comments across many boards about people wishing they would make a full length movie (or series of films) based on the Old Republic storyline.  Well, here is my attempt at rationalizing why it would make sense to do so - please feel free to add to, or bash or whatever floats your boat:

  1. A movie helps with advertising - Whether you're a fan or not of Star Wars, or you are looking forward to the game, nobody can argue with the raw numbers that the movies themselves brought in when they were originally released.  Many thought the movies could have been so much more (see Star Wars Review for a little more insight into this).  But, regardless of how good or bad they were, people still showed up and bought tickets.  To promote a storyline based on a game with a movie that will certainly draw people's attention just makes sense.  Even if it's not a game most people will play, or have even heard of, a movie is certainly going to get their attention and draw interest where they want it.  Now, I should caveat this obviously by stating if the movie stinks (i.e. directed by George Lucas), then it may very well have a negative effect on the state of the game.
  2. Bioware wants this game to have legs - Simply put, they plan on this game being around for awhile.  With the recent statement that they plan to have upwards of 500 planets by 2025 (nevermind the fact that they plan on still having the game still active and growing in 14 years), Bioware needs to have a means by which to keep the interest going past the initial launch.  A movie (especially series of movies tied in to the game) would be an excellent way to do this.
  3. More revenue for Lucas and Bioware - We all know that Star Wars is cash cow.  It's the elephant in the room when it comes to sci-fi stories.  Lucas has made a fortune on everything from movies to pez dispensers.  You can bet the farm that he's going to make a hefty sum on SWTOR regardless of how well it does, but the better it does, the more he'll make.  He's stated in the past that he's not interested in making more Star Wars moves (thank goodness), and judging from the small trailers, who needs him?  Mind you, the trailers are simply small potatoes when it comes to making movies, but if Lucas sat back and let someone else direct a series of movies based on TOR, he could stand to rake in another hefty chunk of change without having to involve himself.
  4. It would be a great way to further the story - Since the game is voice acted and truly about the story, then it would make sense to promote that story and further it by any means.  Making a movie is an excellent way to do that.  Trion is teaming with the Syfy Channel to do just this very thing, integrating the game and a show.  We don't know what the results will be - perhaps a major flop, but the idea is intriguing enough and if the show is done well enough, then people will want to get involved.
  5. Fans want it (for the most part) - This one is simple, there is a desire for it.  Think of it in business terms; if you knew people wanted to buy lemonade and would pay big bucks for a single glass because of demand, would you sell them one or just take a pass?  The demand is there, and I have faith that Bioware could demand the quality it deserves to fill that demand properly, but will it happen?  Time will tell, but I think there's a strong case for it.

I was hoping there would be some sort of announcement at Blizzcon 2009 but didn't see anything about it.  I've read that Blizzard is actively making a new MMO and it's an entirely new IP (not WoW related at all).  Anyone know anything else?  Here's a link to some info. I've read:

www.massively.com/2009/05/13/first-official-confirmation-that-new-blizzard-mmo-is-original-ip/

One thing I could never understand is why Conan - in all the game artwork - looks like he has fetal alcohol syndrome???

I actually see this as a good thing.  One thing I really liked about WAR was the open part system and the way that they handled forming groups/warbands.  I wouldn't mind them helping TOR incorporate some of those ideas.  Then again - I really hope they stay away from some of the more boring ideas of WAR.  There are things that can be learned here though.

I don't know how some people can disagree with most of the OP's points.  Sure, he went a little overboard in dramatizing them - but they are valid.

There are bugs (not nearly as many as he would like us to think though) and the end game is BORING.

If you don't think there is unbalance to classes then try playing a Shadow Warrior.  Even Mythic says they aren't powerful enough.

The PVE is basically the same as every other MMO (run here, kill 10 of these, run back and report).

As for the exploits - I have only seen 1 since launch and that is somehow the Order killed the keep Lord through the keep floor without even stepping foot in the room at the top of the ramp.  It was interesting - I'm still not sure how the hell they did it.

Crafting sucks - there's no denying this.

Lag has gotten better, but it still rears it's ugly head sometimes.

Overall I am totally bored with the game.  Reached 40, raided keep after keep after keep and got completely bored.  Basically if any other WB shows up to defend the keep, most people just leave.  It's not even a battle back and forth - it's either snag it quick or abandon ship.  That makes it even less exciting.  I just can't get into doing the same damn thing and maybe - MAYBE trying to push past the fortresses into the city.

I know that resting in war camps and in the cities are supposed to boost your rest XP faster, but I have also noticed that the rest XP levels jump all over the place.  I have no idea what the hell to think about the rest XP because one minute I have hardly any left and the next I have a ton.  Can't figure it out.

I play a BO on Magnus and you're right - you guys are a bunch of retards.

OK, I have been testing this theory and so far I've been getting gold loot bags for T4 keeps about 75% of the time.  Not sure if this will change with the patch tomorrow, but I thought I'd throw this out there anyways.  So, I have a BO and when we bust through the 2nd keep door I IMMEDIATELY run up to the Hero and am the first or second to hit him.  If I can be the first or second to hit him then I have always been #1 or #2 to this point in immediately contribution regardless of when I actually entered the battle of the keep.  The only times I have not been able to land a bag is when I get nerfed on the roll afterwards, but I always start at #1 or #2 position depending on when I hit the Hero.  I can even hit him once or twice and step back and let everyone else do the rest, but if I'm first - gold loot bag here I come.  Just thought I'd share my working theory.  Not 100% sure of it yet, but it's been working for me for several days now steady.

Keep raids are a joke atm.  They need to revamp that entirely.  Here's some ideas:

  1. Add siege ladders and/or siege towers.  There needs to be more ways to defeat a keep other than the bottleneck of the keep doors and the stairs.
  2. If you're raiding a keep and meeting some resistance and you're at the 2nd door for a keep and the first door resets - you should have a simple way to reopen that door from the INSIDE if you're still inside.  Right now, if you're fighting for keep door #2 and it closes, everyone that dies and can't be resurrected is stuck on the outside.  Not a good idea - you should be able to reopen the door if you're on the inside still.  Keep the fight going.
  3. Destructable walls.
  4. Siege weapons that actually damage the keep instead of just other players.
  5. Remove the pad for mounting the ram by the keep door.  It gets destroyed too easily and quickly making the keep door yet even more annoying to take.

Additionally - T4 needs to be more fluid.  People squat on the SCs so that a zone won't lock and it can get really lonely and boring in T4 as a result.  Take the SCs out of the zone locking equation all together.

Also - it's insulting when a loot bag is finally won after taking a keep and for an option you are given roughly 25 silver.  WTF?  That's not even enough to cover the cost of one flight somewhere in T4.  That's probably the crappiest loot reward in any game I've played.

So can anyone confirm this rumor about the Slayers being released?  I hear the buzz, but the evidence is weak.  Would be awesome though...

I can't believe people still think this is random when Mythic has ADMITTED that they accidentally left some beta code in the final release.  They haven't fixed it in a patch yet.  The contribution system is broken as they have said and will remain such until they patch it.  Once that happens, then hopefully we can get a real contribution system in place.

The problem with this statement is that WoW wasn't perfect at launch. I seem to remember them completely scrapping Ironforge and having lag issues and CTDs just like every other MMO that I've played. Fanboys always think WoW is perfect, and right now it is VERY polished, but it's had a helluva long time to get to that point and countless patches and updates. WoW was NOT perfect at launch, sorry to break that news to you.

And the problem with this is that even though it wasn't perfect on release, Wow was different and genre changing enough that MOST people who bought it stuck with it. It had low specs to run, simple to follow questlines, easy interface, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. We do know very few games are released perfect at launch but WoW didn't make people run for the hills because of this.

Haha - actually WoW did have a large group of people who didn't take to the game right off the bat.  There is attrition in every game.  People aren't running for the hills in WAR necessarily.  I understand that you probably are busy playing WoW at this time and could never possibly fathom that your game had problems at launch as well, but once mommy lets you back on the computer you should look it up.  WAR is not dead (EU has problems due to GOA, but not because of the game) and WoW had problems at launch also.  Nobody is running for the hills.  That's funny.

This mentality has been the root problem of PC gaming for far to long, specifically mmos.

Paying money to a company for a half finished, untested poorly designed game doesn't do the market any good.  It doesn't send a positive message and somehow inspire other companies to raise the bar.  What it does is tell companies they can serve whatever plate of cold turds they can push out with their given budget and people will not only buy it, but empower themselves to defend it for the greater good.

PC gaming only deserves to live if the game makers can get their act together and make better games.  I'm sorry, but it doesn't make sense to pay money for a sub par product.  That is the exact reason one game came in and not only stole nearly the entire market, but also brought in more players than just about everyone else combined (including people who had given up on the market).

So what's the scoop?  I want to try this if it's free, but I'm reluctant to put too much time into something that's just shutting down in a couple of months anyways.  Anyone know if there is any chance they'll keep this going now that it's free?
