What pay to play mmo should I start?

It's virtually impossible to "hack" a WoW account. What happens is someone (with ill intent) gets your username and password by some means.
It's usually a fairly simple thing to avoid... 1: Never, EVER type your account name. 1a: Type it once, into notepad/Wordpad. Save the document on your desktop. 1b: Copy the account name by highlighting it, right clicking it, and selecting "copy". 1c: Start WoW. 1d: Paste your username into the username box by hitting "control-v" 1e: tick the box that says "Remember my account name" down in the lower left corner. Even if you somehow get a keylogger installed, they can get your password from that, but they'll never know which of the 8+ million accounts it belongs to, unless you tell them, by typing it into the Account Name box. 2: Use a strong password. Use a mix of UPPER CASE LETTERS, lower case letters, $pec!al c@r@cters, and numb3rs. resulting in a password like 3v3Onl1ne$uck$. It *might* *someday* still be hacked by a "dictionary" attack that makes the same substitutions, but it will take a LOT longer (a standard dictionary attack might hack a simple password in a day or two. This would take a month or two) - but it has the advantage of still being memorable for you, which a TRULY secure password won't have (it'll be a random mix of Upper, Lower, Specials and Numbers...and will be loooong, too. Very secure, Very easy to forget.) Just those two simple steps will reduce the likelihood that you'll ever be "hacked" by a malicious piece of software looking for your WoW (or other game, or bank!) account information by leaps and bounds. As for thinking LOTRO sucks...erm...you play (and enjoy) WoW, right? IT'S THE SAME FREAKIN' GAME... LotRO took the tried and true WoW formula, added some nifty titles as quest rewards to the process, upped the graphics quality to a fairly modern standard, and added Monster Play as the primary PvP outlet. Other than that, the only reason I *didn't* buy LotRO is that I already had a high level character and a large group of friends in WoW...and I didn't see the point in starting all over, for exactly the same gameplay. So, in the meantime, I'm still playing WoW, and waiting on Pirates of the Burning Sea. |
