I'm actually ASKING for opinions...

Since australia has adopted a communist-nazi internet style like you describe....my suggestion would be to pick a game, download it, and learn to like it for what it is. What representative government would nerf the people internet? WHo would vote for such a retarded idea? You aussies are bat shit crazy to let something like that fly.

Are these people on crack, or are they actually good?

I found eve's gameplay to be horribly boring, i like sandboxes. Also the self-richeous community, you know the game where everyone is a self proclaimed genious simply for taking the time to learn evers ins and outs, didnt help much. But to each their own, some people dont play mmorpgs for the same reasons you do. Also EvE seems to still be somewhat thriving, so whatever, it works. Oh and i thought G4 appealed to the 12-18 year old boy techie crowd, which explains their goofyness. Again to each their own, if it works, grats to them. |

F2P is infact gaming communism. The few rich players playing support all the free loaders. and the government, in this case the development company, has not real motive to design great expansions and really develop the game, untill there is in game "riots" over it. |

Anyone ever think the two payment models though?
People praise the f2p model....it allows the lesser off the ability to play, but only allows the really wealthy to succeed. The p2p model, creates a barrier of entry to those too poor, those without a means to pay but have the money (say some dude in iran) or those who are too young to get a cc (18+ anyway right?) and without their parents blessings. But when you play, every single person is on the same level playing field.
The obvious quality diffrence aside that is. |

Heres my take on this issue, and the mindset behind it. You dont want to do something over and over and over again...right? The problem is, that instead of playing the game (dare i say this) as intended, you probably wouldnt be. The OP made it sound like the developers were holding a gun to his head, saying "you must grind this raid or these mobs because you must obtain this level or item"..... Reality is, you dont NEED that item, time an time again i see people under equipped and playing like they are overpowerd. Nobody is holding a gun to your head saying you must be the single greatest player in terms of equipment, yes even if your one of those self proclaimed "im the best at everything i do it just comes naturally" type of narcissist. See the frame of mind, is that this is a job, just because you CAN make it a job. Play the damn game to enjoy it, when you get bored, move on. You can always pick up where you left off right? When did it become fact that a game must keep you entertained for 5-10 years? There are plenty of games that change what you must repeate to advance, many mentioned in this thread somewhere. Now if this is a WoW related thread, thats a bit diffrent, that game has its own unique set of issues that only arise in a game that is extremely old AND has retained a huge portion of its population over that time. There you might actually need the best gear, seeing as a huge % of your server is on that level. However in my short stint in wow, i was both doing "WTF damage" and "WTF are you doing noob, thats not how you play a mage, get back and spam blizzard" and i was less that well equipped. That game has your destiny preplanned, due to years and years of parsed fights.
All im trying to do is, just slightly, open the eyes of the mmorpg sheep (no offense). You dont HAVE to powerlevel to endgame, then equipment grind, in the shortest amount of time (not really being able to enjoy any the trip there) then quit after 1 year, bitching how there is nothing to do it that it is boring. Most (emphasis on most not all) mmorpgs are designed to be both a book with a story you can control slightly, an explorable world, a social enviroment, and an action game. People want to play as an action game only, and miss the point. I feel that a lot of people are so obsessed with being known in game as a great pvp'er that they completely miss the point of why they are playing (to have fun). If you can only have fun dominating the pvp scene, then i hate to break it to you, your not going to enjoy most mmorpgs. So quit the job of competative gaming for a while and start up some gaming for enjoyment. Funny thing about it, is that those who just play to enjoy the experience, usually play longer (they dont burn though 2 years of content in 4 weeks) and are the better (non cheating) pvpers in the end, it just takes longer than most want to spend (as intended) ...back to your flame war why everyone is wrong but you |

How to get the RP back into MMORPG
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/13/10 4:52:43 PM
Its not about the game its about the people you are with. Use your damn imagination. You think overweight middle aged computer nerds sat around blaming their pen and paper D&D book because no one there actually looked like a warrior hero? "How to get the RP back into mmorpg"......use your imagination...literally

Lost in a world with nothing to do an no one to talk to
General Discussion « Mortal Online 9/12/10 12:03:37 PM
So two things now.
I have blunt weapons skill 57 and handle and pol 22. How do i make use of them, what is the process to start making clubs ect.
Since i have spent a majority of my time chopping trees for stats, i obviously have a lot of points in gathering, as well as the 3 books ive read towards making a weapon. This means i will not be a very good fighter right? If so, is there a way to trade with other characters on my account. Will i be a crafter that cannot fight and cannot easily feed any other characters on my account?

General Discussion « Mortal Online 9/12/10 8:32:17 AM
Alright, after day #1
I have aleady maxed out str, from endless chopping of wood, and selling it. I have read a crafting book, how to make weapons, although i cant make weapons yet, so im reading about blunt weapons. Im not sure how to approach crafting, to be honest. All i can suggest for a new player, is to start in halfbreed land, first step is not to dual weild the weapon(sword) and havest tool (pickaxe). Your first goal should be finding a tree to chop with your armed pickaxe (hit L for skills). Camp there untill you use you axe, sell wood, but more axe's repeat. Do this for a while, youll gain lots of base stats, and some cash. THen follow the path and start killing mobs.
So my str is maxed, my cont is close, if not maxed, and my dex is behind, psy and int are locked.
At this point, i really want to either start crafting weapons (not sure how far away this is) or farming better equipment (are there any mobs that drop equipment? or is it 100% crafted?) For crafting will i need to read a bood on handles, heads, basic skill category, and basic weapon category? Or is there a way to start crafting with out having to read several 9 hour books? *************************************************************************************************************************************8 I also seem to be having an issue with some of the trade npc, where i buy 3 pickaxe, i end up with 1 but having paid for all 3 (i can see in the trade window 3 pickaxe, and the price for them, i then add the silver to balance out correctly, both price and pay will match exactly, i accecpt, recieve one axe but have paid for all 3) THis a known issue? It is not me accidentially not matching price paid and goods recieved.
About this issue... pickaxe is suppose to be priced at 100C or 200C? I think theres an error in the price of the pickaxe causing this problem, just happend again, bought 1 pick for 100c, balanced out 400C to match my 500c stack, price paid matches vlaue of goods recieved, i recieve axe and 1s not 4 like it origonally showed. Either way theres an issue. |

As long as people will be willing to pay top dollar for top quality games that dont "create the itch and then sell you the scratch", there will always be a market for p2p games. I dont want to pay for inventory expansions because you didnt give me a reasonable amount to begin with, then mailed me tons of item mall freebies to clogg it all up, since they become very valuable later on in the game. I dont want to pay extra for an XP boost to overcome your designed leveling wall, where you condition me for 40 levels with fast and fun leveling, then take it away drastically for the remainder of the game. I dont want to have to pay $30 for a damn mount, or even worse rent one. I shouldnt have to worry about breaking equipment when upgrading or crafting, just so you can sell me a protection scroll that isnt even guanteed to work. These are all issues and problems created for the sole purpose of creating the situation where you always need to be spending, and it always adds up to way more than a p2p costs per month.
These f2p "movement" threads are cute however. Especially when they cite lotro, war, or any other p2p game with a free trial on restricted content. They are not f2p games, no matter how much you want them to be. |

Its an absolutly beautiful starting area, its populated, however i havent run into a single ganker. Mobs to fight are literally down the path a decent ways. Trees and rocks to mine right outside the town walls. I suggest doing that untill your pick axe breaks for the stats. All the other starting towns ive choses over the various races were dead, and there seemed very difficult to find anything to kill.
Also rolling a halfbreed is less confusing, 2 of your parents are set, the other two you choose between like 4 or 5 obvious classes. |

General Discussion « Mortal Online 9/11/10 5:59:56 PM
Well so far, ive camped a tree, farmed it a while. It made my movement much faster. Not a huge fan of the trade exchange system, but its not horrid. So now im farming bush pigs, with a few spare swords.
Im curious, will i be fighting mobs that drop equipment any time soon, or is it more or less "prey" mobs for the time being. Id like to eventually get a club, since i chose ruffian i believe (any way to check?) Possible some armor.
I also have some questions about skills and stats. I see a +,- and lock icon. How do they work exactly, it seems like the have no effect. Will i have to manage the set maximun of attribute points? For instance, i was camping a tree for a while, my woodcutting skill and gathering skill have raised, is there any way to lower (i assume the minus sign icon, however it doesnt seem to do anything)
Still the lack of any form of communication with the community is making this one lonely game. |

Originally posted by Realbigdeal I understand exploration is important, but a frame of referance is nice, any. I dont even know what the name of the town im near is, nor can i really ask in game. This is why im resting and asking stuff i would normally ask in game, here. Luckily there are people responding. I understand this game will have a learning curve, and i am not close to rage uninstalling or flipping out about this game sucks.
You suggest starting as a lumberjack, mind you ive rerolled about 12 times in a "sandbox" i think i chose ruffian this time and a fighter race and stat build, i would like to stick with it this time. I would not be against making a new character with a new focus and keep lumberjacking in mind however.
So what i am assuming to be the usual woodland "prey" mobs are what are the starter "mobs", as such i will grind on those for a bit. I wasnt sure what to expect in terms of starter mobs, as i had absolutly no frame of reference.
* oh and i killed one of those "players" that had to be a bot, i got a murdercount, is this bad? The bot in question didnt respond or fight back and had nothing to loot on it or anything i could try to loot. |

Lost in a world with nothing to do an no one to talk to
General Discussion « Mortal Online 9/11/10 1:45:37 PM
This is summing up my experience starting out MO.
The in game user guide only goes so far. There is no frame of reference as to where i am and where i am going.
I have rerolled mabey 12 times. During my exploration of the vast empty world, over several starter towns, i have managed to kill myself by falling, drowning, attempting to attack a wolf and a mountain spider. The mobs killed me in 2 hits, without me doing much, if any damage in return. All times i have died, i have found it quicker and less "pain in the ass" to just reroll, rather than find a priest. The few times i have tried to find the priest, i end up in water, and moving at a snails pace to my destination, only to be stuck in the water, figuing it would be faster to reroll rather than slowly and somewhat blind patrol the shore line looking for a spot that will allow me to exit the body of water.
So here i am not, a halfbreed, in the town that starts with an F (i have no way of checking where i acutally am, such as a map of any type. I am currently at half life, chasing rabbits and trying to engage combat. Not sure how to rest up, only other people have to be farming bots, they all look exactly the same (deafault characters) and never respond to anything i may say, however no one does.
So, for someone who is interested, how long should i expect to be wandering around what seems to be a vast and empty world. Are there mobs anywhere i can actually engage in combat without a 3 shot death? What do people do exactly in this game, i mean theres not even a way to really communicate with other players.

What are the likenesses of a WoW Clone to WoW?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/11/10 8:41:04 AM
Yes but lets not overlook the EQ clones, seeing as WoW is EQ with Warhammer lore, does that make all these "wow clones" both wow clones and EQ clones? Is every burger joint a mcdonalds clone? Despite burgers had been served long before mcdonalds? Is every car a ford model-T clone? Despite the automobile had existed beforehand? Is every football game a Techmo-Superbowl clone? Despite football games existed before hand?
People are forgetting what makes a game a mmorpg a mmorpg, and are calling games that use fantasy lore (as we know it) and mmorpg game mechanics a wow clone. However they do say ignorance is bliss. |
